Wow... That was a phenomenal demonstration. I've been trying to learn how to write like that and he's totally laid the groundwork for how to do it.
Watching this video, I have never regretted deciding not to bring my guitar with me more. I can't wait to try this out!
Ninja! Thanks to running across Antoine Dufour and Andy McKee I have now also found Jon Gomm. Although I primarily play electric and am a big fan of progressive, rock/metal & shred type genres, I am in love with modern acoustic players as well. I think we are blessed with players that are so gifted and have transcended beyond what I would equate to typical fingerstyle playing. What these people do is amazing from a musical standpoint and from a technical/feeling standpoint. Now I just need to get acrylics and learn how this all works lol.

How did you build the finger strength for tapping those strings?
im guessing the progression is kinda c# d# f D#, but for some reason im hearing daft punks get lucky work so well with it

Whats the benefit of using left hand above neck?
I imagine there's less strain to arch your hand, allowing the high strings to be tapped/ring out without your left hand getting in the way. It would be a lot harder to pull off the melodies with the left hand underneath

You gain more power to tap the notes with your hand above the neck. You can totally play with you hand in a more conventionnal place but you will likely find it less confortable.
I don't think your hands would be close enough to really hinder one another if you played with your hand below the neck
sir do you combine sound hole pick ups with SBT pickups ?? for ur music...i hv noticed two cables....does sbt help in percussive tap on sound board...plzzzzzzz let me knw
He actually uses 3 pickups. A Fishman rare earth blend which is a combination of a condenser mic (which picks up the percussions) and a magnetic soundhole pickup (humbucker) (they share the same endpin jack but he splits the signal with a 1/4 inch Y cable). And a Fishman matrix infinity which is a under-saddle pickup. (the other endpin jack).

Well.. Thats pretty easy to me.
Interesting: he's got a piece of styrofoam at the back of his guitar body.
He calls it his "prosthetic belly". Normally the guitar is held in place, while sitting, by your legs. When you move your right arm away from the bridge, your legs stop the body of the guitar pivoting away from you. In order to keep the guitar rigid in the set position he wants, while standing, he has done two interesting things a) the unique guitar strap, which is akin to a brass instrument strap, to hold it horizontally in the position he wants, and b) the Styrofoam to stop the guitar from moving away/towards he body as he moves his right arm away from the bridge.

It's incredible how he can make an expensive acoustic guitar sound like a low budget cajon and a badly recorded dulcimer.
I laughed but I'm sad because I like jon gomm's, I even play some of his songs, but I can't deny that most of live records does not make justice of his tone.
