Like, three movies, even. The Tale is actually quite long but since Tolkien never novelized it, there isn't much in the way of connective tissue between the events and precious little dialogue to adapt. Obviously an inflated adaptation like that runs the risk of becoming The Hobbit Movies 2.0, but I still feel like only one film wouldn't do justice to the Tale.
Angband - The most guarded and terrifying place in all of Middle Earth got infiltrated by two people and a dog. I guess when plot demands it, anything is possible.
Let's just say this is the most beautiful tail of love i have ever heard. The love Beren and Luthien held for one another no doubt is the greatest throughout all the ages of Middle Earth. On numerous occasions it brought tears to my eyes, tears of joy and some of sorrow. Thank you so much for sharing this tale of love and tragedy with us.
I just want to take a moment to appreciate the countless of amazing modern artists who have depicted nearly every scene in the Silmarillion as a beautiful painting, be it digital or traditional. They complement these videos so well. Truly, the sheer amount of art dedicated to Tolkiens mythology rivals that Christian, Norse and Greek mythology at this point.
I like to think that the Valar also sent Huan back with Beren and Lúthien. And that Dior got to grow up with the coolest parents and the greatest dog ever. Tolkien never says it didn't happen, so to me it's cannon. Who's with me?
Luthien singing to Mandos and Mandos allowing them to return to Middle-Earth is likely (I'd say most likely, but I haven't ever seen it explicitly attributed) drawn from a Middle-English adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus. In this Middle-English version, Sir/King Orfeo goes to the fairy king to reclaim his lost wife (abduction by fairies in Celtic/English folklore is very similar to death). He played for the fairy court and was granted one wish, which of course he used to take his wife back. But for some reason (it's a long poem and I haven't read it in a while) they're not allowed to go back to Orfeo's old kingdom, so instead they set up on an island in a river and may or may not still be living there. Tolkien basically gender-swapped who rescued whom (classic Respect Women Juice Tolkien) and kept the rest of the plot the same. More fun bits about that poem and Tolkien's connection to it: there were only a handful of extant manuscripts of it, but because Tolkien is the world's biggest language nerd he decided that none of them were the correct original dialect, so he took these different translations and whipped up a new one in the correct 400- to 800-year-old dead language while keeping meter, rhyme, tone, and everything else that makes it a poem. And later he decided to translate it to modern English.
It wasn't mandos who allowed them to go back. It was Eru himself who allowed them to after luthien made the choice to renounce to her immortality. Remember that for beren even the Valar can't take away the gift of death from men.
Beren biding what he believes is his last farewell while witnessing the horrific remains of the Battle of the Sudden Flame, claiming that Lúthien’s existence alone proves that there is good in the world despite everything Morgoth did, makes for one of the most beautiful pieces of literature I have ever read.
This remains one of my hands down favorite love stories in this world, and I could never get over how tragic and sad their story was. I am always saddened even further every time I hear the story again and again that fate would not let them be together. There's something so beautiful and so tragic in Luthien getting extra human years to spend them with Beren.
I don’t see it as sad. When they passed, they passed together, and together they left the Circle of this World, for such is the fate of Men. They got to remain with each other even after death. That is beautiful.
Thanks for a great summary of this story from the Simarillion. I'd forgotten how heroic Huan was, as well as Beren's multiple attempts to get the Simaril. Luthien was quite powerful, conquering Sauron, Morgoth's second in command. I attribute this to Melian's blood and her own strong will and love for Beren.
@@AnnaMarianne He even forgave Eomer saying that the Evenstar was fairer, so I think he will be OK if you tell him that the fairest woman has Ainur blood

Has Sauron ever won a pure melee fight? LOL He may be the master of manipulation and mind domination but he sure as hell can't hold his own in a fight without magic.

This story is absolutely brilliant. The kernel of Tolkien's entire mythology. Your video summary was outstanding! You left out a very funny part - When Morgoth fell asleep during Luthien's song/dance, he fell forward off his throne to the ground and his iron crown which he had never taken off, just rolls off his head. The image of that happening...

I'm listening to the whole Silmarillion, one morning walk at a time, and your videos are great for helping me keep track of all the names and references, but I also enjoy reliving the story in summary after hearing it whole!
The greatest gift that Beren and Luthien received, was that they died, together... both times. One did not have to live long years, alone, remembering and longing, in world that could not see their tears. The cruelest thing that can happen to lovers is one leaves and the other must, stay. Only a man who had truly loved his wife entirely and for a whole lifetime could write such a story.
Hey Matt, The Mrs. and I recently purchased a pair of French Bull Dogs and when it was time to name them, I suggested "Beren & Luthien." She'd never heard those names, so I brought her here to see their story, as told by you. This is my 2nd viewing of this great tale. She gave me the thumbs up!👍 Beren & Luthien live again, in my home! What a beautiful story. Could you just imagine this one directed by Peter Jackson as a HBO TV series? Once again, that music at the beginning and end (with the violin) is so enchanting.
Thank you so much for telling the story in that way, the voice is majestic, the music is breathtaking and taking you to through the story lines, while the sequence of details is pitch perfect. thanks for the great efforts.

@@kyster86 Considering it has a number of GoT folk in it ehhh I can see that being a concern. Thing is GoT only went sideways in the last season or two. As long as the writers stick to the stories that are already there (and don't go too far with making up stuff of their own) they should do OK.

It makes me wonder what parallels there were with Tolkien and the love of his life (if any since the story of Beren and Luthien is so epic). Great Valentines story, thank you!
Perhaps the greatest love story ever told. A favorite of my wife and I. Perfect timing too with the holiday. Thank you for sharing and delivering it so well.
Huan the Hound is my favourite now. I hope he knows how much of a good boy he is. I can imagine the Valar etc rubbing his belly and giving him a big bone to chew on. 🐶
Imagine how powerful Luthien would be had she been born in Valinor during the Years of the Trees. She could already use her magic on the mightiest of the Valar.
This Love Story, whenever I read, I feel that Tolkien is telling everyone, "This is myself and Edith in a Nutshell. Edith is a Half Angel/Half-Elf who took on two dark lords, while I am on a quest to make sure I can marry her, by getting this Jewel." And It's so cute, Tolkien put himself and Edith in his works!!! Currently, I am single, But this is a relationship, I will love to have. And whenever I reread it, I love it. Tolkien, I feel is one of the few authors I read, who doesn't write strange *Cringe related* love stories, (or if out of nowhere) No Tolkien writes love stories based on experience, and it really has that personal touch!!!

What’s cool is Tolkien based Beren and Luthien on himself and his wife. So romantic. 🥰
And Morgoth is one of his old teachers or professors. LOL
@@morgothfromangband6082 that would be pretty awesome to know you were the real Morgoth lol
Oh so sweet
So who is Huan based off?
Epic story that for decades I've thought needs to be turmed into a film.
Tale is too long for a movie and too complicated for non middle earth audiences , it would be a mess
@@utkarshverma7 an animated movie with no threatical release would be perfect
Angband - The most guarded and terrifying place in all of Middle Earth got infiltrated by two people and a dog.
I guess when plot demands it, anything is possible.
It better never be put into a movie
Just started reading the book and this comes up, perfect timing
Huan the hound, what a legend!
This is the greatest love story ever written, and possibly the greatest story in all of Tolkien's works.
I don't know chief, many elves died in the process including one of the elven King just so that Beren can shag his elven-maia girlfriend.
Perfect for Valentine’s Day Weekend
I like to think that the Valar also sent Huan back with Beren and Lúthien. And that Dior got to grow up with the coolest parents and the greatest dog ever. Tolkien never says it didn't happen, so to me it's cannon. Who's with me?
100%
Listen to luthiens lament by eurielle. Simply beautiful
Two GREATEST LOTR channels ANYWHERE. “Men of the West” and “Nerd of the Rings”!!!!! ALWAYS AMAZING JOB!!
"Beren & Luthien" just the name itself sounds like first Love💕.
I love this love story it’s just goes to show what you’d do for your loved one 💕
yes, you would save the world for your loved one
Ahhh perfect timing!
Happy Valentine's day to everyone!
Ok I thought lady Galadriel was the most beautiful and powerful elf ever. I stand corrected. All hail lady Luthien.
Gimli might forgive you this one.
@@AnnaMarianne He even forgave Eomer saying that the Evenstar was fairer, so I think he will be OK if you tell him that the fairest woman has Ainur blood

I'm so happy that you and men of the west are releasing videos on the same weekend!!
The last time I was early, Tevildo the Cat was still relevant
So silly 😜
3 years later NoTR releases a Tevildo vid lol
Still letting the fact that a dog beat up Sauron sink in...
To be fair, Huan is the best good boy. And Sauron is Sauron.
Sauron and Morgoth exist just to be perpetually embarrassed whenever they're 'on-screen'.
They look scary but they're just saturday morning cartoon villains.
Has Sauron ever won a pure melee fight? LOL He may be the master of manipulation and mind domination but he sure as hell can't hold his own in a fight without magic.
@Jonathan Joestar If I recall correctly they still did alot of damage to him in that fight before going down. But yeah you are correct he won that fight.
@@QuestionableObject Venger would wipe the floor with Sauron.
A vid about all the horses of the tolkienverse would be sick
Slight correction 20:16 Luthien while wearing the Silmaril necklace is considered the most beautiful sight in the entire world, Valinor included.
Incredible love story. Certainly the most epic of them all. I was familiar with the story but not the full details. Wolves, hounds and 2 Vampires..! Huan is so fierce. I’m glad he plays such a major part of the story. I’ll look to see if there’s a segment on him. Thank you!
This story needs an epic serial production
This story is absolutely brilliant. The kernel of Tolkien's entire mythology. Your video summary was outstanding! You left out a very funny part - When Morgoth fell asleep during Luthien's song/dance, he fell forward off his throne to the ground and his iron crown which he had never taken off, just rolls off his head. The image of that happening...
That is funny. Although I do wonder why Beren didn’t just take the whole crown with the Silmarrils on it.
@@bobo577Since Morgoth is huge, I can imagine that a huge iron crown one his huge head would be pretty heavy.
I always love Sauron's fight with Huan, because it's like
Sauron: I'm gonna force fate to happen by turning into The Strongest Wolf That Ever Existed!
Fate: Username "Strongest-Wolf-That-Ever-Existed" is taken and cannot be used.
Sauron: Excuse me what the f-- **Gets absolutely bodied and humiliated**
Thank you for all the effort you put into research, maps, finding artworks, animating and writing a cohesive narration! So well done!
Huan’s death is so saddening it was bringing me to tears
The best and greatest love story that I have ever come across!!!
I keep imagining an 8hr cinematic mini-series, telling this lay. #EpicLove 🤞🏿
Finrod was the ripple of hope men constantly need
The way you put the music in the background, the illustrations and the map-purely enchanting!! Thank you for another awesome video, man!
I've been waiting for this up there with my favourite stories of middle earth
Great video, my friend! This is definitely one of the best love stories ever told in Middle-Earth.
I want a three part movie about Beren and Luthien story. Would be so great.
Huan is such an epic character.
If they make a movie they need to make his character the greatest thing ever!
This story would make such a beautiful movie.
Ah man, this story is so deep and so entertaining to watch. I can't even imagine how many times i've watched this video infact the greatest love story i have heard.
I love how tongue in cheek Beren’s comment about his hand was. I’d like to think that Melian got a giggle out of it while her husband just sat there trying to come up with a clever rebuttal but couldn’t.
I had a bad breakup 4 days ago, and I came back to watch this wonderful, ever-lasting love story to remind me that the true love can still exist.
Beren and Luthien forever 🤍
Glad this video could bring you comfort today. May better days be ahead! 😊
The last bit was so beautiful...
I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying... 😭😭😭
I just dont know what more to say...you manage to captivate every single thing so greatly...I hope your channel keeps growing more and more so that this amazing content keeps coming.
Thank you so much! :)
Just wanna say thank for doing this. Its been a few years since Ive read “The Hobbit”, “LOTR”, & “The Silmarillion”. Your videos help fill in some gaps.
2:30 isnt it hilarious how Sauron is Just Mean. he likes doing it, he have fun being evil, much fun. despite the better taste he has for some cultural aspects of life, he is no different from his master. also, Gorlin´s interrogation mirrors smeagol´s " shiiire. Bagiins " thing.
1000% my favorite tale from all of tolkiens creations! So much of these events lend themselves to dramatization so well, I can't believe no one has gone ahead with a been and luthien movie/series! I hope the amazon series is well done if for no other reason, it'll increase the chances of seeing it someday!
Wow- so very moving! I've heard parts of their story, but I never knew how it ended. Thanks so much for posting. ❤
I'm listening to the whole Silmarillion, one morning walk at a time, and your videos are great for helping me keep track of all the names and references, but I also enjoy reliving the story in summary after hearing it whole!
"And long ago they passed away
In the forest singing sorrowless"
One of these days I'm going to make it all the way through one of your videos without tearing up, I swear.
Hey Matt,
The Mrs. and I recently purchased a pair of French Bull Dogs and when it was time to name them, I suggested "Beren & Luthien." She'd never heard those names, so I brought her here to see their story, as told by you. This is my 2nd viewing of this great tale.
She gave me the thumbs up!👍
Beren & Luthien live again, in my home!
Thanks Matt!
Great video! I truly have fallen in love with Beren and Luthien's story!
Just finished this chapter in the silmarillion and man i was blown away. Absolutley beautiful tale!
Aragorn (in Peter Jackson's film): "She was an elf who loved a man"
Frodo: "What happened?"
"Aragorn: "She died."
Audience who read the Silmarillion: "EXCUSE ME? THAT'S ALL LUTHIEN GETS, YOU ANGST-RIDDEN LITTLE SNOT?! Respect your elders at once!!!"
That picture of Huan just mauling tf out of Saurons neck is one of my absolute favorites
Dude may well be the most well known villain in fiction and the darkest threat to the world for thousands of years, but his pretty ass is a chew toy to the best boy of Arda

This is my favorite love story ever written! Very well done on this video! This channel is quickly growing to be one of my favorites! Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks so much! Glad you are along for the ride! :)
It makes me sad knowing the Amazong series won't be able to film this as they only have the rights to events taking place within ME's second age. This would make an amazing movie or series.
The second age is pretty awesome though, I'm just worried they turn it into a got show
@@kyster86 Considering it has a number of GoT folk in it ehhh I can see that being a concern. Thing is GoT only went sideways in the last season or two. As long as the writers stick to the stories that are already there (and don't go too far with making up stuff of their own) they should do OK.
They have the rights to the events in The Lord of the Rings and The Appendices, Lotr is in the third age btw
it's gonna suck, probably
This is better as a standalone 3 hour movie, hopefully amazon or someone who can get the rights adapts it, its a perfect story with a clear narrative unlike other tolkien stories
Since I had laser eye surgery done recently I went ahead and listened to the silmarilion audio book since I wasn’t able to do anything else, all of the stories in the book are amazing looking forward to reading it as well!
Huan, the most loyal, and goodest of good boys. The real MVP.
JRR Tolkien--such a good writer, he can make a self-insert story awesome

"Luthien did not permit Curufin to be killed."
Oh, if Luthien knew what Celegorm and Curufin will do to Doriath and her son in the future.
This was a truly exciting, beautiful and touching story. I'd only heard snippets of it before and had no idea of the depth and breadth of what happened in Beren's and Luthien's lives. It makes me wonder what parallels there were with Tolkien and the love of his life (if any since the story of Beren and Luthien is so epic). Great Valentines story, thank you!
This is beautiful and so dramatic

Huan the Hound is my favourite now. I hope he knows how much of a good boy he is. I can imagine the Valar etc rubbing his belly and giving him a big bone to chew on. 🐶
The way Tolkien describes Luthien…just magical.
Huan the Hound of Valinor, the best boy in ANY world, and not only man's best friend, but also elves!
RIP you absolute beautiful unit
This is an incredible story. I would love to see a movie set to this.
Imagine how powerful Luthien would be had she been born in Valinor during the Years of the Trees. She could already use her magic on the mightiest of the Valar.
6:29 It is so amazing, task itself was near impossible but the ultimate prize is just a glowing rock. Beren gave the most badass answer.
Honestly, as a 28 year old man. This is the kind of romantic tale that resonates with me.
Nice work on making this so easy to digest, Tolkien's works were was always hard for me to interpret till you came along.
