    Gotta love how elves are generally praised for their benevolence, beauty, strength, and prowess...yet hardly anyone talks about how they were utter douchebags in the early hundreds of years of Middle Earth. The actions of Feanor, the Kinslayings, the vows of the Sons of Feanor, Eöl and Maeglin, Thingol's over-the-top-protective daddy syndrome...

    • @marcobongiorni657
      @marcobongiorni657 6 месяцев назад +9

      I think that, when you have a maiar wife, the most beautiful and priceless jewel that combine the best of the two most skilled races in jewel making and the most beautiful daughter ever existed or that probably will exist, "over-the-top-protective daddy sindrome" is the least that can happen to you...mandatory i would say

    • @cormacmacsuibhne2867
      @cormacmacsuibhne2867 6 месяцев назад +9

      @@marcobongiorni657mandatory indeed. A daughter is one of if not the most precious things a man can have in life. And if someone wants to marry her, he would have to indeed be worthy (Hence the quest for the Silmaril).
      Let's not forget that Elrond did the same thing to Aragorn saying only a king would be worthy of Arwens hand.

    • @johnisaacfelipe6357

      Thingol I think was alright. He was a really over protective dad, but that's not so bad in those days. Otherwise he didnt some extreme bro-tier stuff with Turin and whatnot. Only really dickish move was hurling racial insults at the dwarves during their argument... which got him killed

  • @thibaud1832
    @thibaud1832 6 месяцев назад +35

    I like the moment in Fellowship (book) where Strider is camping with the hobbits and they essentially ask him to tell them a bedtime story and he complies, prefacing it with "it’s a sad story, like every story in Middle Earth".
    The matter-of-factly dark tone and/or undertone in almost every Tolkien’s story is really remarkable, again and again he emphasizes that everything sucks and everything will go on sucking more, just barely hanging to hope in final victory, with tiny glimpses of light here and there.
    This of course came from the unique combination of his temperament, life experiences and faith.

    • @valentinkambushev4968

      The message isnt that everything sucks. There is still good in this world, mister Frodo, and its worth fighting for. I agree with the comment above me, its more an acceptance of the struggles than it is nihilism.

      @thibaud1832 6 месяцев назад +8

      @@TheSuperappelflap of course. I never said it was nihilism. “Actually I am a Christian,” Tolkien wrote of himself, “and indeed a Roman Catholic, so that I do not expect ‘history’ to be anything but a ‘long defeat’- though it contains (and in legend may contain more clearly and movingly) some samples or glimpses of final victory” (Letters 255).

    I always thought of Thingol as a sort of Maiar-en elf. He is alone in having seen the Trees among his kin, so he is as wise and powerful as the Noldor. Thingol is the only elf to marry a member of the Ainur, a fact made more impressive by the power of Melian to repel Morgoth. Thingol is the ancestor of a long, powerful bloodline that would eventually contain the likes of Elrond, the Kings of Gondor, and the Numenoreans. He is surely an underappreciated elf in the Tolkien Universe, as some of the most important figures in the Third Age are descendants of Thingol.

    My favorite Tolkien's character. He has his ups and downs, but he probably influenced most on the history of Middle Earth. Many of the greatests stories and heroes connected to him - Beren, Luthien, Turin, and many others. Arwen and Aragorn are his descendants. Galadriel was Melian's handmaiden and learned a lot from the Queen. Also thanks to Thingol, who have managed to marry a Maia (Melian), elvish and human kings received angelic blood wich later gave them power to counter Sauron (all magical abilities of Luthien and Aragorn are inherited from Melian).

    Thingol is one of my favorite characters from the first age. I find him very fascinating in character in how he portrays Sindar Elves and how his character relates to the Noldor in personality. So, when Thingol re-emerged from the forest with Melian, he was actually taller than he had been before? I hadn't heard that before.
    I always thought Thingol's granting of certain lands to the Noldor was rather convenient, seeing as the Noldor were already living in those lands (or at least some of them) and Thingol had no way of evicting or controlling the Noldor anyway.
    Unfortunately, despite all that he did do, he is best known for the huge mistakes he made that ultimately led to Doriath's ruin.

    Wow. That was a pure work of art. The way you so seamlessly had interwoven the story of Anglachel, Beren and luthien, then back to Turin and Anglachel again was genius. My question though is when did Anglachel have its name changed to Gurthang? Was that after Turin died by it? Anyway great job again, 1 million subs definitely deserved 🎉

    Such a long and apparently honorable life just to fatally stumble on greed and pride after being alone with a Silmaril. Did Tolkien ever address whether the light of Valinor could ever be kept outside its lands? What future did Feanor imagine if he had successfully reclaimed them? Did the Silmarils serve Morgoth any purpose except to draw Elves into fruitless battles? Did Earendil's journey and plea only succeed because he surrendered the Silmaril?

    • @cormacmacsuibhne2867
      @cormacmacsuibhne2867 6 месяцев назад +2

      Any Elf who saw the Light of Valinor brought it with them in their hearts. Before the Return of the Noldor, Thingol was the only Elf in Middle Earth who saw them everyone could tell.
      I imagine Fëanor would have stayed in Middle Earth and ruled a kingdom as that was the intention of many Noldor like other members of the House of Finwë.
      Morgoth took the Silmarils pretty much as trophies because now the Light of the Two Trees could only be seen if you look at his face.
      I don't think he surrendered the Silmaril. He used it to guide his ship to Valinor and plead to Valar to save Middle Earth.

    Thingol is one of the best examples of those tragic characters in folklore who bring about their own destruction...and yet Tolkien manages to give that plot element even more complexity. By forcing his daughter and her boyfriend to steal that Silmaril, Thingol directly caused not only the deaths of all the Elves who were killed by Carcharoth in Doriath, but also his own death at the Dwarves' hands. Yet also, it is because of him that that very Silmaril was taken from Morgoth and ended up on the brow of his great-granddaughter's husband, shining as a star of hope for the rest of eternity, and giving off a light that, through Galadriel's Phial, saved Frodo and Sam and thus saved all of Middle-earth from Sauron.

    @trevorn2351 6 месяцев назад

    Hi NotR, fantastic video as always. I had a great idea for a video for you to make, and I'd be stoked if you wanted to use it. I think a video about possible locations and lore that a video game could use would be really cool, and it goes pretty well with you playing Return to Moria lately. The Middle Earth games showed that most fans are okay with a little stretching or even inventing non-canon stuff, and even enjoy it, so exploring some potential for that seems like a good idea for a video. The idea came to me when I was reading about Ered Gorgoroth, the Mountains of Terror, most of which were destroyed with the rest of Beleriand in the War of Wrath, but there's an isle called Tol Fuin which was the highest part of the mountains that's still above water. Ungoliant dwelled in the Mountains of Terror, and Beren was said to be the only one to ever journey through them, and there are untold horrors there, and it could be an extremely cool idea for a game to explore Tol Fuin, the last remnants of an ancient horror. And that's just one idea, I think it would be a cool way to explore some smaller or more niche parts of the world and lore in a video, and a video game.

    An amazing character indeed, but this story just shows the Beren, among elves or mortals is the most badass of all Tokien's tales. A mortal man just goes to Morgoth to take the most craven artifact ever. Perhaps the only character braver than him waa Fingolfin. Tokien is such a master storyteller. ❤

    Melian's influence on Elwë must be interpreted in a metaphysical dimension. What kind of change did it cause in his soul that gave him this Maia-like difference? What is the basic doctrine on which this change in spiritual structure is based? This is a phenomenon that needs to be examined in depth.

    I think he called himself the 'Lord of Beleriand' one too many times. That's the kind of title that gets you killed, he's the lord of a decent portion because his wife could hide it well sure, but Morgoth is the lord of Beleriand in those days and before him, it was Fingolfin. Thingol was more like a duke of Beleriand and he kinda forgot that

    I don't know how the Dwarves could kill Thingol in the Cristopher Tolkien's version. We know Thingol was the tallest Elf being, and we know that Maedhros was 8 feet tall (almost 245 cm), so Thingol may be a monster very close to the trolls.
