You're really awesome for making this channel! I watched something by the tolkien professor the other day and that was so interesting. So I bought the Silmarillion... then I stumbled upon your 4k review. Now I am watching this and it's amazing! I just wanted to stop by and say thank you so much for making this awesome and fairly niche content. I have subscribed and I hope to see this channel grow super big!
Just for curiosity: Can you let us know how long it takes for you to make a video like this? I just want to appreciate the angle of a content creator making something like this.
I‘ve been subscribed to your channel for quite some time now and I am amazed by the constant quality of your content. I do consider myself a „nerd of the rings“ as well, so it doesn’t happen often that I’m learning something new when watching your videos; but you‘re always putting together a very interesting mini documentary that is concise, informative, beautiful to watch *and* listen to. I love the visuals, I enjoy your readings.

That part about Aragorn and Eomer leading their armies to war against Rhun sounded so dope. That’s an unbeatable squad right there.
I like to think that they were joined/aided by the Easterlings that sued for peace and the eastern Dwarf clans.
John Mooney the easterlings realized without Mordor they had no chance against Gondor, Rohan and the dwarves of the Eastern mountains.

Aragorn's farewell to Arwen is one of the most powerful moments in all of Tolkien's writings. The Lord of the Rings, all of His works, are more than just fantasy; the elves and ork, and battles and magic. They are an epic of mankind's travel through life, and joy and sorrow, struggle, defeat and triumph. And in the end, inevitable death. The final lesson Tolkien teaches us is not to fear death, for death is not the end of it all. Fear of death and the senseless pursuit of immortality are what doomed Numenor, the greatest weapons in the hands of Evil to twist our minds, our actions. In his final days, during his hardest trial, Aragorn shows as much wisdom as he's ever shown valor and courage in his life, accepting at last the gift of Eru to his secondborn sons, men. The Halls of Mandos await for all of us, one day, and then... on.
to be exact I think Men don't even go to Mandos, it's an unknown even to the Valar! Beautiful words though
@@TheRuddster95 they do stop at mandos but they soon after that leave to whatever place Eru has for them

So beautiful. I have always loved his story. Not too proud to say this brought a tear. Excellent telling. Thank you.
Thank you for the visuals esp the MAP! It helps so much. I've been a fan of Tolkien's work since I was a kid, so glad there's channels like this.
My hope is that someone will make a sequel covering the lives post ring with equal fortitude as you have so masterfully presented them. I was moved. To me, there is no story better told than one of a life well lived.
Oh no. Just please use your own imagination
4:17 I’m sorry but that illustration is so freaking epic !!!!
Honestly, the story of Éomer and Aragorn leading their forces into the East and South to route out the last of Sauron's forces among the Easterlings and Haradrim, with the actors from the trilogy coming back, would make a sequel or two, maybe a two part film, I'd be totally down for. Seeing the last grasps of evil being defeated, and seeing the East and South of Middle Earth in full glory would be fantastic if done well. Maybe if War of the Rohirrim is good and a success we could get another animated film about that. That, or the Battle of Dale during the War of the Ring, both would be great to see in either animation or live action. If, that is, it's done well.
I have loved Tolkien for more than 35 years. You do a fine job of presenting his work. Keep up the good work.
The scepter of annuminas wasn't the scepter of the kings of numenor but the scepter of the lords of Andunie, the line from which Elendil and his sons were descended.
Although not the scepter of the kings, the Lord of Adunnie was always a member of the royal house and thus his scepter was also a royal heirloom

A few years back I recieved a deluxe edition of LOTR from the 80's from my father. He had written "Lord of the Rings, translated by the Red Book" inside the shelter cover. I have never asked him about what he meant by it nor understood it til 5:58. A true nerd of the Rings! :D
Such an awesome story. According to Seth speaks book. A teacher from the spirit realm. We are in the 6th age. He says whatever we imagine has to exist at some point in time otherwise we could not see it in our minds. I'm so amazed when I hear old English. How poetic and graceful our language once was.
English was never yours to start with. The English were Angle and Saxon Tribes that invaded England and they could never read a book, the Scots and Irish taught them that skill and in the end, these Angle and Saxon Barbarians Stabbed the Scots and Irish in the back. Yup, graceful and poetic indeed.
dam, did not expect this to hit me so hard
Ok I just had a thought but imagine if Robin Williams read Tolkien's works as Mrs Doubtfire
Forgive me, but I feel that I must point out that Aragorn also appoints the Master of Buckland as one of the councillors of the North Kingdom. Though Buckland is more technically a colony of the Shire, it is still generally recognised as a part of it among most hobbits. Merry is at the time the Master of Buckland. Other than that, great video!
I just can't stop listening and watching this Tolkien lore and mythos. I can feel the Christian metaphors and spirituality flow from these tales and books.

No matter what, the story of the Lord of the Rings ends bitterly, even though they won, they are mournful that they are mortal.
This made me cry, because the end for us mortals really is the end. In the long run there is not even a memory of zs left, because the Earth will be burned to ashes and glassed over indide the outer layers of our sun, that by then will be a red giant star. Of course the human species will be already dead by then for hundreds of millions of years.

As long as Gimli doesn't ask the King of Gondor to toss him he'll be able to keep his beard!
Makes you wonder who ended the generations at 100, and why.
Exactly, counts as one dynasty
@@OneTwoMark Well it could mean that the dynasty changes, which often happens if the only heir is a daughter, thus taking the name of the husband.
Or it could mean that in 100 generations, Aragorn and the war of the ring have passed into legend. This is already the case for many medieval Kings, think of Charlemagne and the Crusaders, who are more myths now than Kings of old.
Or if you're a real sadist, that the realms came to an end, and all fell into ruin, thus setting up the world for our times.

I always heard that Arwen had lived the rest of her days in deep pain after the loss of Aragon. But with how you described it, it seemed to be a few months of reflection and morning. It wasn't necessarily easy. But it was rather a time for Arwen to find peace so that she may leave the world in a state of tranquility rather than in a deep pain. For the gift of man to be barrable to a person who had only known Immortality. I find that quite beautiful to be honest.
Arwen's father told her that Aragorn would die and she would be left alone and have a deep sadness.
This was when Arwen's father was trying to get her to leave with the others to board the boat that would take her far away. Safe from all harm.

I like to imagine the valar, being so moved by the tale of love between Aragorn and Arwen, as well as all the good that had come from their union, allowed them to be reunited in their afterlife, maybe even allowed in the afterlife to see their friends again and then in the new Arda they were together once more, free of the bitterness of death.
Arwen chose the Gift of Men and I guess she will part ways and go to the mysterious place where the souls of humans go after death and reunite with Aragorn there.
Valar don't have the power to decide where men go when they die. There's a reason manwe allows elves in his kingdom but not men who have been destined for a place much fairer than the Undying Lands

My siblings and I were watching The Fellowship of the Ring one time, when my dad (who hates fantasy and fictional movies) comes downstairs and watches the movie with us for a while. I believe he started watching during the scenes in Bree and he watched for about 20-30 minutes. As he stood up to leave he said, "That guy is a badass"
I find it very cool that Aragorn was depicted so well in the movies that even a guy who knows absolutely nothing about the story, instantly understands that Aragorn is in deed a badass.
I think it's quite sad Aragorn and Frodo don't see each other again, Aragon doesn't visit the Shire until after Frodo had left. Same for Bilbo, the last time he saw Aragorn was in Rivendell in the fellowship of the ring.
Yeah indeed, I would like to see a list of our heroes and when they all last saw one another. It's so sad to think about. I hate goodbyes
@@ds4629The Fellowship’s parting at Isengard was officially the last time Frodo and Gandalf ever saw Aragorn. The Grey Havens was the last time they saw Merry and Pippin. Years later, they reunited with Sam in the West, and possibly Legolas and Gimli too since they also sailed. We don’t know if Frodo and Sam were still alive when the Elf and Dwarf arrived, but they might’ve been.
Sam’s last confirmed meeting with Aragorn was in Gondor with Rosie and Elanor, but perhaps they met halfway and got to say a last goodbye when Sam set out for the Grey Havens, which was also Sam’s last parting from Merry and Pippin.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were all either residents of Gondor or frequent visitors when Merry and Pippin retired there, so they probably all saw each other a lot. And Legolas and Gimli stuck around until Aragorn died.
I see lots of awful stuff in my line of work, and in the world. This, Tolkien's world, and the love of the people who care for it... this makes it bearable.
Damn when Arwen said she understood why the numenoreans fell... That hit
Can you please elaborate?
@@pratiksrma3728 Númenor fell when they rebelled against the immortal world. Númenor sank into the ground and only a handful of Númenorean men managed to escape or were already in middle earth. Aragorn was one of their descendants.
@@pratiksrma3728 Part of Numenors rebellion was bitterness at the fact that they are Men that must die, while the Elves and the Valar are immortal and tied to the Earth. The Kings of Numenor (under Sauron's influence) viewed Death as some kind of unfair curse - being forced to grow old and leave the world and go somewhere mysterious and unknown, so they rebelled by trying to invade Valinor to become immortal themselves. The Elves kept trying to tell them "It's not a curse, it's just how God made you, and I'm sure it's for a good reason." They weren't convinced, and it all went bad. Arwen finally understands the bitterness of the natural death of a loved one for the first time. So she has some kind of an emotional window into the desperate weakness of Numenor.
@@peteg475 Death and mortality was the gift offered to men. Not easy to understand, but death is natural and we will be with our maker soon. Elves was not this lucky and was seperated from God and instead took to nature for guidance. Elves took the moral high ground in life, Men got the high ground in death, forever.
Also Boromir understood this, he tells Frodo to not carry the burden of the dead. When Boromir died he became one with the gods, forever at peace.

it pisses me off how something can be that perfect, leaving me with tears and a torrent of emotions every time I hear or watch something related to it. We owe Tolkien so much.
Its crazy to think that a lot of the initial writings for LOTR where when Tolkien was sick from the trenches of WWI and that sickness was the only reason he survived while almost all his childhood friends died in the war. He fought at the front lines of the Battle of the Somme for 5 days and many say that the desolate, crater pocked land of Mordor is based on the scenes of that battle in WWI. I believe the Dead Marshes were also inspired by all the bodies that were strewn about at the Somme and many were never recovered (Including his best friend, Ralph Stuart "the Baby" Payton
). The Ring Wraiths and the lasting horror of encountering them almost make them like the personification of the true horror of war and the lasting psychological damage. Its somber to think the horror and sorrow Tokein went through and how that helped shape his books and how real the emotions are when you read them.
In the end, outside of any prying eyes, they met beyond the borders of Arda.
Such was the gift of Illuvatar that most do not understand until this very day. And so in this, the music of Ainur was enriched by beauty and sorrow unimaginable, so that even the most distant stars and the very Void itself were moved.
I freaking love Aragorn. He is my favorite character.

Great episode! Brought me to tears!
It's such a moving story of when Aragorn lays down his life. It's amazing the quality of things you can find in the appendices!
What I find amazing is how Tolkien came up with the names which are elegant such as Elessar, Mindolluin, Mithrandir contrasted with rough sounding names like Ugluk, Shagrat, etc.
He was a linguist who not only spoke many languages (including several archaic languages), but also studied them and was constantly nit-picking about what made them unique...
In addition to that, one of the main reasons he didn't fully flesh out his canonical languages was because they were constructed only to *sound* good and not to be functional languages.
What about his tax policy?
Haha! Didn't some guy who used to write books ask that question?
@@NerdoftheRings yes, he retired a few decades ago.

In sorrow we must go but not in despair ♥️💔😢
I keep coming back for that last part of Aragorn saying his last goodbye to Arwen 💔
I cannot remember now where I read this but there was an "unofficial" version of Eldarions reign that Tolkien had apparently spoken to somebody about, that he would reign with the dignity and splendour of his father, with the wisdom and grace of his mother but not confined by the evil that defined their lives. Essentially that he'd rule as a great ruler, much like his father, but with light behind him, not shadow. I find that very comforting for some reason, that even though Aragon would rule in the likeness of the Greatest Numenorean Kings he still witnessed that Evil and had to defeat it, somewhat a bitter sweet life and rule, something that his descendants wouldn't have bearing down on them.
Tolkien thought of writing a sequel called the New Shadow but cancelled it.
