Before everyone jumps on the train generalizing all Japanese men as those who prefer dumb girls, I ask you to consider the following (I don't know why Asian Boss didn't bring up this topic, because this is no secret to the Japanese): As someone who had a chance to meet with Japanese men at work, I can tell you that the video is rather misleading. I'm going to shock you guys by saying that Japanese don't want "dumb" girls and instead seem to highly prefer Japanese women who are similarly educated to them. In fact, similar education is one of the social requirements for marriage in Japan. So, where does this story of "dumb girls" come from? Well, in Japanese social culture, people are expected to go out with others that are of similar social and educational status. This goes for both men and women. Just like in the rest of the world, girls in Japan are brought up to be independent and well educated. And also just like in the rest of the world, girls are more likely to get a higher education. Thus, you tend to have a large amount of girls that are more educated than men. The chances of these more educated girls finding a man of similar social and educational status is lower, which means that girls will likely find and become interested in men who are less educated. And these men don't want to go out with someone more educated than themselves due to Japanese social culture. However, it's important to note that this culture means that girls also want to find men that are similarly educated and have a similar financial status. That's just the way it is culturally. What you end up having in Japan is a large group of educated women that are busy with their careers that can't find people of similar education/financial status for two reasons. Firstly, there tends to be more educated women than men in schools. Interestingly, this is not just true for Japan, but also for the rest of the world. (I am not saying that it's a bad thing. It just means that girls are raised being told that they must get a really good education to compete with men.) Secondly, the men are busy with their careers too. Thus, people are not meeting each other. Japan has considered holidays to boost relationships (and its population). I used to think that there was a "dumb girl" desire among Japanese men. But that turns out to be false. There is a cute culture (and you've come across that in anime if you've experienced it). There also is a lot more of misogyny in Japan compared to the rest of the developed world. However, the "dumb girl" desire doesn't exist. This issue just boils down to having a ton of educated girls compared to men combined with a social culture that expects relationships for men and women to be of similar education/financial status. Lastly, I once again want to clarify that I'm not trying to undermine misogyny. As I said, it does exist throughout Japan. But this issue is more complicated than misogyny. Not many people will read this comment sadly, as it'll be far from the top comments. But if you do come across this, I recommend that you look into this issue more if you are interested in it. Especially since we're dealing with low birthrates throughout Europe, Japan, and some communities here in America, it might be something worthwhile to look into.
i would hate to date a dumb girl...this would make my job easier. they won't have to ask me about everything like how do i do this? what should i do? how should i approach this? blah blah blah...
Come on Asian Boss, y'all pandering to the westernized white knight guys who want to "rescue" Asian girls and the Feminist Westernized Asian female crowd, who don't represent normal Asian women in Asia at all. I'm an Asian that was raised in the West like you Kai and I KNOW that you guys know the difference here, but I guess you know this will get clicks/views. Gender relations and roles are so much more stable in Asia than in the West. And the reason why you don't touch on at all. You're simplifying to pander to the feminist crowd. it's HYPERGAMY. Women idealize taller, richer, higher status, and higher educated men. All statistics show that women desire men who are in a higher status position, which is perfectly natural. Your feminist panel claims they want Japanese men to accept their "intelligence" (as if it's a given they are), yet how many of these girls are going to step up and date a guy with low earning potential/bad college? Your feminist panel chalks it up to insecurity, but that too is an oversimplification. Just like women want taller and richer men (and every woman claims they deserve this lol) because it plays into their natural assumption that men are providers, men TOO are empowered by a woman who is supportive and views him as a leader. All men desire this and it can drive/empower normal guys to be great providers/husbands, IF they feel appreciated. The reality is that feminist girls like your panel do not feel any need to empower men or meet men halfway on relationships, yet they remain hypergamous and want their man to be tall, handsome, rich, educated, a provider. This has created a large chasm in gender relations in the West (and in westernized feminists like your panel). The result is that high value guys all over the world are opting out of interacting with these women (which is exactly the story the girl on the left said when she was in the bar). They don't want to deal with these girls' shit , e.g., dealing with a woman who challenges the man on everything because "that's what a strong independent womyn does" and doesn't offer anything empowering for the man in exchange. The result of that is these bitter girls go on panels like this and complain "where have all the good men gone?" and worse yet MOCK and DISMISS men who won't validate their own special snowflake self-image (just look at their reaction during the video viewing; no effort at all to analyze WHY these men have these opinions. Just outright you-go-girl dismissal). Well, the "good guys" have found women who are supportive, empower men as leaders, and give men a purpose (because young men without a purpose are a bane on society and basically expendable). And yes, those women tend to be more conservative and traditional. On the other hand, the so-called "bad boys" or high status men, who these women complain about yet hook up with anyway (lmao), simply use these girls for sex because no self-respecting & high status man is going to commit to this type of woman. Seriously, in 13 minutes, there wasn't a SINGLE time these girls asked what women can do to empower men in general to be better husbands and boyfriends. It was just "Oh its about meeeee so why can't guy see I'm so smart?" My challenge to Asian Boss is to find some intelligent men (especially Asian-American or Western who are underrepresented) to counterpoint these women.
Guinevere Bloch haaahahahahhahahah they don't speak! hahahahah been there. And I love how we make them blush, because they are not used to hugging or kissing someone. great idea GUinevere!
back in hs, we had some foreign exchange japanese students. our school was majority Latino. it's normal to get close to be friendly with someone so when we said hi, we were close n some girls are more on the traditional side and gave them a peck on the cheek as a greeting. some of them got real red and one of them said in English "wow I like America " lolll they were pretty cool
Most of japanese man should watch this video. My mother often tells me,"Study hard so that you can live alone, even if you are a girl. " I have good parents.
Yup, agree Actually, dumb or smart girls, arguing with girls are hard for men but arguing with smart girls are better than the dumb one (We can't argue with dumb people)
@@ohdaUtube I'm not making fun or belittle/ridicule others culture by saying my opinion. I'd rather have a guy who doesn't feel inferior because of my career or intelligence. It takes a great man to deal with a woman who stands up for herself, who has strong opinions and personality. It's easier for a insecure man to deal with a submissive and dumb girl.

now i know why my japanese boyfriend's mom doesn't like me because i'm a medical student, and she said to my bf that he should find someone with lower education, not a female doctor. and it makes me sick...
@einherz What you said is so dumb. I don't think you even know what marriage is. So sex is the only thing matter in a marriage? Marriage is so much more than that. You need someone one to be able to share you worries, offer you advices, stay together with you through tough times, know how to manage the family's finance, know how to educate the children, know how to solve problems, etc. Marrying a dumb girl and you will end up with dumb children too since you will be busy working and she is too dumb to teach the children anything. Also imagine you have a bad situation at work, you told her about that and all she do is asking if she is pretty or talking about some pretty dress she saw. Yeah, that much be great.
Yeah, i like a smart women.. My wife is smart women to... But, honestly I don't like when women are smarter than me.. Women who are too smart have looked down on men.. So i prefer girl who has educated pretty much same as me... That would be more balanced relationship...
I'm Japanese. This is really interesting video. My family always told me, try to act 'dumb' girl when you are talking with man. Because man don't get marry smarter girl. I really sad. But this is true even now.
That's soo sad man am just like wtf the way that people think it's so different i think Japanese people have so many issues that should be solved but as a woman u should be brave and smart don't change your self r some1
Act the way you are. I find a smarter woman fun to learn from and maybe sometimes I can teach somethings she does not know. It’s how real relationships work, and marriage.
Thats good. But also u must be aware "if my gf is smarter and have higher salary than me.I need to work as hard as her to prove im still capable of taking care of her and dont let her work hard alone with me just live easily" u must have that mindset if u understamd
I live in Tokyo and its really freaking hard to find a japanese girl who doesn't act clueless all the time. I'd much rather have a woman smarter than me.
Nver married or in relationship with dumb girl especially if her so fuckin lazy, gold digger, act like a boss that tell us what to do,bad attitude n even couldnt cook a fuckin water.
People are attracted to those who have similar intelligence. Anyone who wants someone who is "dumber" than them, demonstrates their need to be controlling I think.
No not really. They just want someone they can feel comfortable around. Being around sharp people 24/7 is mentally exhausting. Trust me, I work with some of the sharpest minds (intellectually and socially sharp people) and it feels like you're 3 years old again standing in front of your parents wringing your hands.
Being sharp is not the problem. The problem arises when a smart person gets stuck in "high-intelligence mode" 24/7 and is unwilling to participate in activities that are not all about intelligence.
It's probably because having a relationship with smart women or men is like having a relationship with a nerd. People need to be in a relationship with someone that they can relate with. If someone need to be controlling then their obviously insecure with their partner.
Maybe if they are looking for Japanese men. I know a lot of Canadians who would be forming a line to date them, lol. And, lots of Canadians like cats :)
Why should they adapt to a bad society? they should affirm themselves in order to make this society better instead of acting like a coward or a loser. With this kind of behavioir a bad society would never change, and next they will dare to complain about sexual inequalities... People who act to be dumb are dumb.
wouldn't make more sense to just keep educating yourself to skyrocket your confidence enough so you don't feel "threatened" by other girl's brains, instead of aiming for dumbifying all the women?
that's another thing I can't quite understand. why would someone want an "obedient" girl? Personally, I like an obedient dog so it won't crap in my carpet. But a women's supposed to be smart and interesting enough so that we don't have to worry about obedience, resting assured they'll do the right thing for both of us :)
Geraldo Figueras I'm the same way. The thing I looks for more than anything is intelligence and independence. I have never been able to connect with the mindset of someone who looks for obedience in a partner.
I agree. I'm not even defending the concept. Just refer to my original post. I think it's more like the guy accepting that he is under-qualified to be the girl's boyfriend because she is more determined than him.
The funny, yet sad thing I thought about during this video: "Well, at least Japanese men acknowledge that the woman is smart, when they see one. In Russia a lot of men think they are apriori smarter even if the woman has PhD and he;s barely managed through high school."
Though I have to mention grades and PhD etcetera only requires dedication and not intelligence, your men are quite u intelligent for not appreciating smart personas.
I prefer a woman who knows equally as me. I hate "dumb" people cause they are so hard to talk to most of the time cause they don't understand what you are trying to say so you have to adjust for them. I think people that are more smarter then i am feel the same.
Men have different preferences, some people might like dumb girls, others smart like you and generalizing people like this isn't proving a point and this whole video didn't prove anything
@@dh-qp2tw i don't think nowadays most people do tbh, I'd hate to feel inferior to my partner. If you ask me most people in the west want to be with someone similarly smart, maybe a little more or a little less depending on how dominant they like to be in a relationship
Here's a fact:- Japanese people are too honest to sugar coat what most people all over the world think regarding men's masculinity and women's femininity
She may have misheard her because of her accent, who knows? I didn’t like how they acted condescending towards someone who doesn’t know who the f Donald Trump is
Don't worry! The stupid people of the world are only trying to make you feel bad. Be as smart and free as you could possibly be and have a waaaay better life than any of these so called "men"!
I think it's a blessing in a way. Because if you are going to push through all the insecure men and at the end meet a japanese man who appreciates you the way you are even if you are SMART (oh ma gah!) then you have a golden man on your hands! One of a kind almost.
Ladies of whatever ethinicity do not ever tone yoself down for another person who seeks nothing but superiority and doesn't appreciate you . As its been said not getting married will never kill you.ever.
Amen that's exactly what I tell people from my entourage but they are dumb in the Arab world a lot of women are not happy In thier marriages and they keep complaining all day and when you tell them to get a divorce and move on with their lifes their like no for them been married and not happy is better than divorce it's just so disgusting some woman are so stupid instead of focusing on their happiness and future they just want that marriage label
That may be true, but so many J-girls can't hold a decent grown-up level conversation very well and are emotionally on par with middle schooler. I guess for those that just love j-girls that much that they'll put up with anything or those who constantly need their egos stroked to feel like a man, then it's fairly easy pickings.
So I did some research on this trend and figured japanese guys like women to be not only dumb but to give full control to japanese men. Meaning they like dumb and submissive, a person who just dont think much and follow what men do over a when who is smart and professional and argue with mens decision. I guess it make sense lol.
Paul Lee Given how matriarchal Asian households are it makes sense that we look for wives that will hopefully control us less. But most of the time it's and act and thier devil side only opens up after marriage lol
Men feeling insecure about smart women...Sooo...what's new? Seriously, there is not a single culture in the world where this perception is not popular.
I agree that this might be common, unfortunately. But in Japan this feeling of male insecurity is way stronger than in other countries. Take my native country, for instance, Italy. It is true that many men here, generally speaking, like to feel smarter, stronger and more powerful than their counterparts. But they do not enjoy at all being with a dumb girl. They want to have profound conversations, they want to be challenged, they like to argue. Most Italian men would find this kind of women empty, boring and useless. So Italian women do not act this way. There is a big difference, after all. With my boyfriend I argue all the time. We both enjoy it. And we are not an exception.
@Tidder T It seems that you're implying that men don't have preferences.-> "it's just women" Which is obviously incorrect. No, it's not a fact, it's just your opinion. Learn the difference.
@@adelheid9037 Girl are hypergamous by nature, and men feel the need to provide more for his counterpart and have the dominant role. Our society was and still feels like a patriarchy, so it's easy to guess that they will feel intimidated to a rich and smart women. Men knowing that their counterpart is smart and rich makes them feel they can easily be replaced. Insecurity is almost present in every people so you shouldn't blame it. Famous statement in all over the world: Rich = girls
I'm half Thai with very light skin and mixed features so I'm considered "beautiful" in Thailand. I'm also a medical student but my patients there say that I'm too pretty to be a doctor???.....???... I was shocked; why can't "pretty" also be an educated, dedicated doctor? I'm sick of the stereotype. Btw it doesn't affect me in the UK so at least that's good.
And you need to come here to this comment section to brag about it to feel better about yourself? We got it, you're so beautiful (white?) and smart and a perfect doctor. Thx4info
My husband is a white japanologist professor and we have lots of japanese friends at the University who are considered as "strong, intellectual, opinionated and independent" kind of people. I noticed that most strong japanese women in our circle thinks in the beginning they can't find a strong japanese man to marry so they marry a white man to balance them but in the end divorcing them or living apart because they realized in time that they are still a "conservative japanese" at heart. So they end up returning to Japan. They just couldn't keep up with the "independence and strong opinions" of the western people. It's sad but I have seen these pattern so many times at the University.
Me too. It is more stressful to deal with a girl who has no idea what she is doing than a girl who is smart. From a smart girl, I can learn new things from her and how to improve myself.
It's called inspiration bro. It doesn't matter if it is man or woman. It's finding beauty in someone who studied hard or worked hard to achieve their goals. (Relatively similar feelings to great artists or scientists)
If she earned more money than me i couldn't give less fucks about it. If she is smart, have a nice personality and looks good (everybody can look good with some effort) i'd totally date her. I don't want to date a puppet. I want to date someone i can talk to about all kinds of stuff.
I dated a few American guys like this. 🤢 I fell in love with my husband because he enjoys how smart I am. He likes hearing different opinions and thoughts, and he's always open to changing his mind about something. I don't have enough patience to stroke an insecure man's ego by playing dumb. I want (and found) a relationship where we are equal partners working together to find solutions. You can accomplish a lot more that way. Oh, and we're not constantly at loggerheads. We have different areas that we're better at, and areas that we are similarly matched and have different opinions, we just have an adult conversation with the goal of understanding each other, and we come to a consensus. We have a very peaceful, happy marriage.
As a Japanese girl,my opinion is like ×Japanese men don’t like smart women ○Japanese dumb men don’t like smart women and Japanese smart men don’t like dumb women It doesn’t exist in your countries?? I’m just curious
Italian men, generally speaking, like to argue and be challenged. Even dumb Italian men do not like to be with someone who just pretends to listen, acts dumb and never shares her true opinion. They would find her boring, maybe they'd spend a night with her if she's pretty but then leave her. We talk and discuss a lot. In Italy women are better at school in average and most university degrees are earned by females. I have two degrees and my boyfriend none. He doesn't feel threatened at all. He thinks I'm smart and he's proud of me. He's not an exception. Unfortunately men usually get better jobs or better carreers because they don't take maternity leave (they are allowed to, but usually it's the mother who takes it), but here only people with psychological issues truly think that it's because women are or should be dumber.
I am German and that reminds me of an article I read about a year ago. It showed a study in which they had questioned men about their ideal partners. Nearly all men said that they would prefer smart women. Then every man was given a set of different profiles of women with a picture and all kinds of information, like age, hobbies and so on. Among that data was also the alleged IQ of these women. This information was the only thing that was changed in the different sets. The men were then asked to judge how attractive the women are. Now, despite claiming they would prefer smart women, men had actually judged the women significantly higher when their IQ dropped. The Scientists explained that men would probably prefer less intelligent women because subconsciously men want to lead. And they don't want a partner who questions their position as a leader.
Yes, that is how many societies work today (men dominating). But is it genetic for men to "lead" or have we just been socialized to think that way? I believe that the upbringing of a child can be extremely influential in creating the morals that the individual will have.
Well yes, today and the rest of history, and although dominance is somewhat a biological trait for men, with many societies as the examples, I would still believe that socialization has a large impact. We, as humans have gone past mere 'genetics' as our lifestyles. There would be more positives than negatives if both partners earned a good wage for example, compared to if one was to simply dominate.
lol I can understand you coming to that conclusion but i think this is a way more complex issue. for example when the girl in the middle was asking about his work in great detail and then men didn't enjoy that it could be less that their ego isn't being stroke and more of an issue of Overworked men really not wanting to talk about work or jobs. They went out to have a good time and take their mind off it.
Mari's also my favorite. her sultry voice and reasoned demeanor. her fashion ensemble went well with her auburn hair, styled in a way that fits her face. I wish that I could meet her.
I have to say, in China the situation is better. (I'm a woman from China by the way) At least for guys who have received high level of education, they don't always expect women to be dumb. I've actually met many guys who are attracted to women who are intelligent.
As a Japanese, i have to say the people who got high level education do respect women, same as your country. Though it is true that most of Japanese try to show themselves smarter than women.
In China there is more gender equality compared to Japan or even South Korea. Chinese parents prefer their sons to date or marry a university educated woman.
@@doozhvag as far as I m concerned, educated an d Japanese men do like intelligent women but the percentage of men is still very low in comparison to American, Chinese or European men
I definitely noticed this when I lived in Japan. I'm the type of person that is very hands on and loves to learn new things constantly. Most Japanese guys were very intimidated by that and thought that I was scary. My Japanese male friends used to call me "boss lady" 🤓 . I see that even now in my work life. When I do product training for our Japanese customers (mostly male engineers), I can see the shock on their faces when I walk in and have expertise in a field that is generally reserved for men in Japan.
I'd not date a guy who prefers a dumb acting girl because he would seem like a dumb guy to me. Intelligent people are the best, they are so appealing. Having interesting conversations and learning things from each other is just so good.
how would you measure intelligence? standardized tests? which university someone went to? IQ level? type of occupation? the reason some men like less intelligent women is because they feel like these women would be more care-free, easy going, and fun to be around. it's not always about superiority/inferiority as the media would have you believe.
That's fine, but then you can't really criticise average Japanese guys for being repelled by intelligent women when you yourself said if they're not intelligent they're unappealing.
That's in Japan, in case you missed or forgot while listening, and they mentioned near the end as well by comparing to western places or "outside of Japan".
Same, I would like to have a smart girl than a dumb one. One reason being that you can have some intellectual conversations than someone who just listens but doesn't understand a thing of it, etc. Other reason being that for me, personally, is related to job. I am unsure about my future etc., and it would be better to have a girl that wont mind being with me while having a well paid and guaranteed job offers.
The whole world ? more like Western part only ... because in Asia people do realize the effects of Hypergamy (women's instinct to want a better partner than her)
Greetings from Malaysia i ll be intimidated if she can make me feel what a failure as a man i am being an Asian culturally and as a humane person. Not how much she makes or how high her level of education is. but if she impose that on me then i guess its just another wham bam thank you ma'am relationship. i ll be more intimidated if she knows the triad or the streets more than i do coz i really don't!
I don't know how socially active these three ladies are in Japan, but if they were in the USA with that intelligence AND beauty, they would not have any trouble getting dates.
I personally think many anime are like a minstrel show. The scenario writer depict women as object. They treat them as something that does not worth to be treated with respect and dignity.
Azuki Island maybe they didn't really want to show it like this, but yes that's what i see/feel too (and not only in anime, some american action movies too)
While that happens a lot, in very famous anime like Eva or cowboy beebop you see very smart women being treated rightly. A smart girl is usually seen as a type of girl, like the dumb one, the aggressive one etc. But if i learned something from playing video games since i was 4 is that media doesn't make you into something different but it sure can drag you deeper into a hole, anime portray most woman as docile and dumb because the society sees it that way basically, not the other eay around.
This makes the Japanese male ego sound so fragile and delicate. Reminds me of when a Muslim friend explained why Muslim women have to cover up - she said because men have no self-control, so women have to take away any possible temptation from them. This is similar, as it’s like women have to hold back their intelligence to make men feel better about themselves. In both, it’s the women actually in control.
I am a Muslim women that wears hijab. We wear it because it's a form of worship just like Sikhs men wear their turbans. Secondly, we wear it because men objectify women. It's a form of empowerment to not allow any man to objectify you. Third, it is also considered a form of protection especially the face covering to not be identified and stalked. Back in the day when the world was much more dangerous than now, women would be followed, kidnapped and sold as slaves or raped. So when every women is covered these dangerous men didn't know who is who. Thankfully, it's much more safer now but the idea still stands. And yes, men can be dangerous and insecure. That's why we have so many metoo cases all over the world. And boyfriends killing their girlfriends isn't uncommon either.
Jo Van .......This^.....I was looking for a comment like this......how ironic that they are talking about the subject of dumb Japanese women when they spoke like a dumb person with those repetitive phrases.
When it's not your native language you can tend to use the expressions you hear the most, and not thinking like a native American does, don't you think ?
Wow, I really like the personality of the lady in the middle, Mari, she looks very smart, a person you can really enjoy chatting about lot stuff. having a good conversation
I think either way in the relationship, if the male OR female constantly acts 'too smart' (like if they are always correcting people when they speak) it's really unattractive and dislikable.
Oops! I just saw this! Finally I know why the Japanese guy I met a few days ago stop writing me, after I told him I speak 4 languages fluently and also some Japanese...
There is nothing wrong with being proud of your language skills, but actually speaking several languages doesn't prove your intelligence at all. That's not even worth discussing.
viaumagma in fact she didn`t say to be smart but just that she speak several languages...on the contrary it`s the guy who felt intimidated by this fact
johno doh exaaactly. this comment caught my attention! the other girl was somehow right with not exactly using "dumb". Most likely, men may prefer an emotionally intelligent woman and someone who can be relatable. anyway. this is a broad topic. X)
My husband is Japanese. I earn a lot more than him, I have a more leading role at my job, I am more educated when it comes to world politics or cultural issues and so on, I have strong opinions and I speak my mind. I do believe this is a national problem, not just Japanese. I think this is kind of putting Japanese men down more than it should. Just look at the latest EU parliament meeting where a polish man said women are way more dumber than men and therefore should earn less money. I think it is stretching too much to angel the video as a "Japanese men" only problem. My husband don't mind me earning more money, or that I jump-in in his conversations with friends if I have a opinion about something, and his friends are the same they respect and listen to me. My husband is proud of me and my achievements and he supports me in all my decisions. This is a worldwide issue, not just Japanese.
"polish man said women are way more dumber than men and therefore should earn less money." I’d say he’s somewhat like what Nigel Farage was for the UK on the European Parliament (a hardcore eurosceptic who took on the seat) but with much less impact on national politics. I don’t know a single person who voted for him or for his party (I think my leftist bubble could be to blame). I had a handful of peers in junior high school, though, who expressed their support but they’d all outgrown those views as they reached voting age, as far I know.
The propblem is that just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there. I agree with Jessicka, this isn't so much a "Japanese" issue but rather a global issue. There are plenty of things Japan needs to work on as a society but that goes for pretty much everywhere in the world
Jessicka Takizawa your husband being Japanese does not mean that this video is not true or whatever. I think your husband is one of the 3percentㅡcause he married with you:)
Smart, pretty, and bilingual Japanese girls? I'd say all three of these girls are rare to come across and totally marriage material. I know because I married one just like them!
Kaizoushin Rare to come across? LOL I mean, cmon... Being smart doesn't mean bilingual. I'm sure there are smart girls to come across other than bilinguals
Dude, I mean... you shouldn't categorize women for having "marriage material", not even when saying it's because she's smart. You don't even know these girls.
I would love to hear the Japanese men's perspective based off of this! I just wonder if Japanese men don't want smart babies. These women are not just intelligent, but also gorgeous.
I really love this because it's actually a meaningful and intelligent discussion with actual opinions and back stories that we can listen to and ponder about it ourselves. Really makes me think about my own situation too.
I used to live in Japan for many years, coming from a western country. This interview was interesting but also doesn't really reflect the average Japanese female's mindset not to mention a 3 person interview is a minuscule sample size to generalize from. But you need to take into account the fact that these Japanese girls being interviewed all speak decent English, this in itself is unusual because most can't, and definitely not at this fluency. Being able to speak English means they've had significant western influence, either they've lived abroad or travelled (often enough) to pick up the language and culture. When learning a language you're not just learning speaking reading writing, you're also learning a culture. The interviews on the street had a wider range of opinions but I think what could have been done better was have half of the video comprise of street interviews, include a larger age span and maybe these three girls to comment on the street opinions.
So many truths in one video... I have an annecdote to share. I'm a Brazilian woman, and during college (in Japan) I dated a Japanese man. He was (perhaps is, he's not dead or anything) very sweet, and actually liked that I was opinionated and knew different things from him. The problem in the end was: he had never learned to see his partner as a friend, to whom you can talk about deep things. Maybe he was one step forward in comparison to others, by talking about different topics, but it got repetitive, he would go through the same conversations over and over again, e never saw me as "friend", just as "girlfriend", and that makes a huge difference in how you talk to/treat someone. They simply don't learn to think like that in their society, and this is a work in progress, a very important one...
well you could look it from a different angle. What about women who would only date men who are smarter then them. A lot of women I know won't date a man who has lower education as them. This is also very sad
it's not just Japanese men that feel this, it's all men. I understand this video is about Japan but it's not a national or ethnic issue but a biological instinct for men to provide and protect. this instinct is also why women like men who can provide and protect them, someone who is stronger, taller, more successful, the list goes on and on.
I'm biologically a man but don't have this "instinct". There are plenty of guys like me. This is a cultural construct which has its roots in the agricultural revolution.
Not me. I've walked away from plenty of "dumb" women. It might be fun to flirt for 5-10 minutes and then it's like "yea, but she's dumb, yuck" and I move on.
Same. There are also plenty of women who look for meek guys because they don't like to feel inferior in the relationship. A lot of people who go on and on about instinct or DNA don't really have any clue what they're talking about. They're the kind of people who prefer traditional gender roles and see problems whenever anyone doesn't follow them. Surely history has a lot to play in these roles, but they aren't embedded in DNA.
As someone who had a chance to meet with Japanese men at work, I can tell you that the video is rather misleading.
Rick Ace Cute culture FTW! XD BTW, I'm sure the "dumb girl" desire DOES exist, but not with all Japanese men. Then there are some who like women who are smarter than them, and others who prefer a balance. I prefer a balance, but I'm quite flexible. If things work out okay, then so be it, dumb or smart!
> Just like in the rest of the world, girls in Japan are brought up to be independent and well educated. And also just like in the rest of the world, girls are more likely to get a higher education Maybe in raw numbers if you count Women's universities and the like (where you don't really learn much and it won't really make you smarter), but I can tell you from my own experience in Japan that on average, the woman/man ratio is much worse than in the west when you consider the regular universities. If you go at the master level, the number of women drops even harder and it's also quite similar with the PhD. Unless you are in one of the few fields with a big majority of women (like nursing), women are likely to have plenty of options to choose among men.
Long story in short. I used to date a Japanese guy and he was so insecure about himself. Whenever we had an argument he used to tell me that I’m too independent. I was sick of that word and I broke up with him. After watch this video I understood that what he really meant by that word.. thanks
I really get irritated when I see the way Japanese women act in Japanese media... I didn't know it was because dumb was actually considered cute. Its quite interesting how the social expectations in romantic relationships can shape people's behavior to that extent. I think you missed a very important question Though, Asian Boss: Can Japanese woman be interested in guys "dumber" than they are? Would a woman who went to Tokyo university be interested for instance to date a guy who didn't attend university?
that's a very nice question, I want to know that too. If woman also wants a guy in their league, doesn't that means it's equal? Woman population is bigger and the chance of getting into prestigious universities is even smaller. Most people would feel they'll connect more with someone that has more similarity with them which makes the "girl with high education background" become the minority that most people can't relate to. I want to ask about the guys from their university too, do they also prefer the supposedly "dumb girls"?
anastasya vie *If women also want a guy in their league, doesn't that mean its equal* That's an interesting thought. The way I see it, that's how it is in most societies. But here the problem is that if, in general, men want women beneath their status and women want men above their status we create a system where the most effective matting strategy for women is to become dumber and dumber and for men to become smarter and smarter. But if one of the groups decide to care less about "smarts" then this strategy will break down
assalane I agree that society pressure play a big part but Imo, ideally it would make people elevated each other when they looked for a partner that fit them without give up to be "normal" or "dumb" in the context of this video. People are different and many successful business people doesn't always have a prestigious degree and so does the girl who appears to be "dumb" perhaps smart in other way. Measuring people just by their intellectual is not how people have a relationship. Some girl does better at supporting people even when they are not intellectually smart and I don't think this suppose to be an insult or measurements that "dumb" girl is preferred. I think the reason why people get along easily with someone who applauded their effort than someone who ask about their business right away is because they want to be accepted and not evaluated by a stranger. Woman will not become dumber if they pick a partner that fulfil their need, whether it is a rich and smart one or someone who help them emotionally.
P. Orenji Everyone regardless of gender wants their partner to make them feel good about themselves. It's integral to maintaining a relationship and certainly if I loved someone I'd like them to feel good about themselves.
Maybe to continue a long-lasting relationship, yes, because there's already so much at stake. Especially if you have a kid involved. But if we're at the beginning of a relationship, I'm not going to dumb myself down so you can have higher self-esteem; I'm not going to make myself less competent so that you can feel more competent.
P. Orenji It's not about being dumb. A man wants to feel like a man. A woman wants to feel like a woman. There are many ways to achieve this besides playing dumb. If a man simply said it's not my job to make my woman feel wanted and desirable, all it shows is you don't really care that much about that girl.
+P. Orenji _A woman's job is not to make a man feel better about himself._ A woman's job is to make her man stronger, to empower him with her behavior. And when a woman chooses to get into a relationship with some man who had courted her, this by default will make him feel better about himself. _Not a mother's job either, if you're a grown man._ A woman being someone's mother and that same woman acting motherly towards her man, are not the same things. And if a woman would not act motherly toward me, why would I choose her to be the mother of my children? _Same thing goes for vice versa._ You're not making any sense. _But if we're at the beginning of a relationship, I'm not going to dumb myself down so you can have higher self-esteem; I'm not going to make myself less competent so that you can feel more competent._ If you could have the choice, would you rather choose yourself a man who is equal to you or the one who is superior to you? Cheers.
+Anaximander of Apollonia To be honest, yes, women are attracted to smart men. But when it comes to relationship, intelligence tends to play a much smaller role than men usually think. As a female, I would choose the one who respects me, cherishes me (which is not the same as pampering), and is willing to act as a responsible, life-long partner in this relationship. It really does not matter if the guy is smarter than me or not. Ultimately, what we want is stability and appreciation.
The ladies on the panel don't sound like they are from Japan. This would have more credibility had you used ladies from Japan and not Japanese American chicks from California. Like totally!
Japanese girls who get educated in the West seems to be so damn confident.. very contradict to traditional women who are often timid and don't that self-expressive
This does sound like a lot of men in general need to "man up". Why do women have to act a certain way to make them feel more secure? If they are not secure in the first place, nothing is ever gonna happen, because it is not anyones job to fix your insecurities for you. Why not just be proud of a woman, who makes more money, has a nice apartment, has a great job etc. Why not acknowledge her efforts? Nope, she will feel she has to act dumb, so you gain some courage? In my opinion, this is a male problem and has nothing to do with females. And it works the other way around too. Get to know each other. If you don´t click, fine. But I do really not see why any woman whatsoever should hide her accomplishments because it will make some guy insecure. That´s his issue to fix, not hers.
if your honor is based on being superior instead of being respectful and trustworthy you need to have a talk with yourself about what your so called "honor" really is. Cause that is not it.
but what's dishonourable about a partner earning more than you? statistically one will always earn more than the other... i don't get what you're saying
+LauryUchiha Somehow you think grabbing a bunch of Japanese guys to make a heavily edited 4 min video is a fair representation for "a lot of men in general".
that's precisely the case , it's always about men 'have' to man up , honestly we don't know how japanese men are brought up , as boys growing to adulthood , what they have to deal with to develop this little complex (some) my solution is for women stop expecting anything from men , take initiative , do tell what you want , normal guys are so simple , so so easy no man or woman 's obliged to do anything for another from my perspective
I found all three of them intelligent. Sometimes I was under the impression that Yuka wanted to show off her red nails. The other girls seemed to be more humble but maybe it was just my interpretation.
For me, I find women that are smart attractive as well. Now I'm not fixated only on smart women. In fact, I do find women that aren't as sharp, or maybe "innocent" if you will, attractive too. Just depends actually. But all I'm saying is, having a smart woman can be a plus too. I don't really care if she's smarter than me or "dumber" than me. If we have a relationship that works, then that's all that matters to me. That's just my personal opinion. But I get why the Japanese culture like women that are more inferior to males.
I'm on the same page as you. I, too, don't mind if a girl is smarter than me in a relationship. In fact, it can help me grow as a person because in some ways, I'm someone who starves for knowledge and wants to learn more. Not saying I want to compete to match up with the smart girl, though I strive to make myself better everyday intellectually, physically, and emotionally. Having a smart girlfriend can help me with that.
I think the girl in the red top, got me feeling sad. That she was having conversations that was interesting. But I think I get what the guy was saying to her. They wanted to just relax and have a conversation that is not related to work. As they work long hours.
as a foreigner living and studying in Japan I feel this video is very helpful. I sometimes work as teams work with Japanese and when I go deep in the conversation they will never talk with me more. This is really a big problem to me until now :((
As a foreigner living and studying in Japan now, I'd like to suggest to you, first, don't tell them your real feeling all the time, they will feel unsafe; secondly, if you want to make friends with them, you have to master your Japanese language skills and get to know their culture「空気を読めます」. And it's easier for white people to make real friends because most Japanese don't have very good impression to Asian countries and African countries except European countries and America.
I am Russian. In Russia we have our own social problems, but I have to say that the girls in the studio are stunning!! And the Japanese guys seem to be unsecured. And that is really sad. ((
Their perceptions of guys is one-sided. Once they get rejected by a guy at a bar, they think it's because they go to a good uni or have a higher salary. That could be the case, but surely it isn't. However, let's be real here, these girls probably wouldn't even want to marry a guy who has a lower education or salary. Make a video where you ask women whether they prefer making more money in a relationship or whether the guy should, and i guarantee most would prefer the guy to make more (Of course there will be some girls who wouldn't mind). Taking that into consideration, some guys would feel like they can't provide so they reject these girls before they get dumped. +If you want a man to treat you with respect, don't go for an insecure guy who likes dumb girls. Acting dumb is just pathetic and annoying. Being genuinely clueless (unaware of things) can be cute.
Thanks , that's a very good point of view. I think there's so many factor why someone doesn't like talking to you. What if someone feel uncomfortable talking serious in the 1st meeting, what if you ask too much? I don't think it always about an educational background but who you are meeting. What about the guys from the same universities as them?
Well, my question is, why do they extrapolate their experiences of some guy at a bar as "Japanese men are like that"? I think these ladies haven't realized that they aren't average, that they in fact have more skill, education, and experiences than the majority of the population, and therefore will not get along with most people simply because their experiences of life as a whole differ a lot. And NOT because they are women. "Acting dumb is just pathetic and annoying." - You seem to be projecting your preferences as fact. It is not so. Many men like it. "Being genuinely clueless (unaware of things) can be cute." - yes, cuteness is being clueless. Same as acting dumb. The distinction comes from assessment done by the person on the receiving end of clueless behavior, and depending on one's preference, deciding that it is appropriately clueless, and therefore cute, and therefore attractive, OR that it is too clueless, and therefore dumb, and therefore unattractive.
I think you have a point. Possibly one of the reasons many guys are so hesitant is because many women with a higher education tend to raise their standards, which means limited options. And even if this weren't the case, the media perpetuates these stereotypes. I don't think women should be judged so quickly based on what university they attend, but you can't entirely blame the men for this perspective. If I were a man, which I think about often, I wonder how easy it would be for me to date any of these women. I can imagine it would be more challenging. Men have the right to choose who they want, just like women do, but if we want to make the gender divide easily we have to understand the opposite sex and eliminate the double standards.
Mr Robot I think the girls made it obvious were open to dating the guys with the lower salary and what not, but the guys backed out once they found out the woman made more/was more educated. Comment above did strike my curiosity, how do guys at their level react to them?
(._.) now I know why sana and momo from twice always making puppy eyes and looked like they're clueless (not hating) and that's the reason why they look cuter than the rest of the member
@@pyreworks5210 I reckon Sana's wicked smart, on that same Happy Together episode mentioned by +funkystyle , she definitely knew how to hold the conversation which is usually a sign of intelligence. She's definitely not lacking in charisma. She also apparently picked up Korean one of the fastest among JYP's trainees.
I lived in Japan for the better part of a decade. This video is very interesting and there is no doubt that this interview shows off a major trend, but I also feel that it doesn't tell the whole story. Also, these women are highly Westernized (including a Westernized mindset that is often at odds with the Japanese mindset), so I would also be interested in hearing from Japanese women who don't/can't speak English. In fact, I would say that the street interview video of women and men in Japanese yields similar (though not so overwhelming) results, but somehow has a different overall tone. It's almost like in a Japanese context, they say how things are without overtly judging the facts as much. On the other hand, in the Western context, the main point is judging the facts over the facts themselves. You may not agree with the Japanese "acceptance" of these cultural trends, but on the other hand, that attitude is what keeps Japanese society from fraying due to hatred of people with different opinions, as happens in the West these days. When in Japan, I felt that the country was culturally (at least in some respects) similar to America in the early 1950s, in most of its good and bad ways. Yet in some ways, even when you can see the many downsides, the early 1950s is refreshing due to a certain innocence, national identity, and general lack of internecine left-right cultural warfare. Still, this was a good interview and does uncover some interesting aspects of Japanese culture, although of course, we should also remember that not every Japanese person is like the generalization referred to here.

Before everyone jumps on the train generalizing all Japanese men as those who prefer dumb girls, I ask you to consider the following (I don't know why Asian Boss didn't bring up this topic, because this is no secret to the Japanese):
As someone who had a chance to meet with Japanese men at work, I can tell you that the video is rather misleading. I'm going to shock you guys by saying that Japanese don't want "dumb" girls and instead seem to highly prefer Japanese women who are similarly educated to them. i would hate to date a dumb girl...this would make my job easier. they won't have to ask me about everything like how do i do this? what should i do? how should i approach this? blah blah blah...
It was just "Oh its about meeeee so why can't guy see I'm so smart?"
My challenge to Asian Boss is to find some intelligent men (especially Asian-American or Western who are underrepresented) to counterpoint these women.

Sounds like insecurity to me.
It's probably because having a relationship with smart women or men is like having a relationship with a nerd. People need to be in a relationship with someone that they can relate with. If someone need to be controlling then their obviously insecure with their partner.

So true..
@Tidder T Why are you posting this under every comment no matter the context? Repeating yourself doesn't make it valid but the opposite.
@Tidder T It seems that you're implying that men don't have preferences.-> "it's just women" Which is obviously incorrect.

It's sad but I have seen these pattern so many times at the University.

so if a woman earn much more money than u and got double Phd, u r very attracted by her?
the more money she have, the more desire u do?
It's called inspiration bro. It doesn't matter if it is man or woman. It's finding beauty in someone who studied hard or worked hard to achieve their goals.
(Relatively similar feelings to great artists or scientists)
If she earned more money than me i couldn't give less fucks about it. If she is smart, have a nice personality and looks good (everybody can look good with some effort) i'd totally date her. I don't want to date a puppet. I want to date someone i can talk to about all kinds of stuff.
I dated a few American guys like this. 🤢
I fell in love with my husband because he enjoys how smart I am.
As a Japanese girl,my opinion is like
×Japanese men don’t like smart women
○Japanese dumb men don’t like smart women and Japanese smart men don’t like dumb women
It doesn’t exist in your countries??
I’m just curious
You are correct. Dumb men don't like smart women. 頭悪い奴らに振り回されないで! 自由に好きなだけ頭良くなっちゃってください!
From America.
The potato nah, even men from good university don’t want their girlfriend to be in a better one.
Germany is just the same.
Well its's true in Vietnam too
I am German and that reminds me of an article I read about a year ago.
"today"? Can you name me a single society in the history of mankind in which men did not lead?
Well yes, today and the rest of history, and although dominance is somewhat a biological trait for men, with many societies as the examples, I would still believe that socialization has a large impact. We, as humans have gone past mere 'genetics' as our lifestyles. There would be more positives than negatives if both partners earned a good wage for example, compared to if one was to simply dominate.
I would like to ask you something and please be honest. Would you want a passive man?
Sorry, what do you mean by 'passive man'?
these men's egos are more fragile than my grandma's 100 year old porcelain doll lol how sad.
Lisa J hahaha
Lisa J I like you 😂👍
lol I can understand you coming to that conclusion but i think this is a way more complex issue. for example when the girl in the middle was asking about his work in great detail and then men didn't enjoy that it could be less that their ego isn't being stroke and more of an issue of Overworked men really not wanting to talk about work or jobs. They went out to have a good time and take their mind off it.
I personally don't disagree, but I don't think it's ok to judge their preference, regardless if they are male of female. Opinions are subjective.

how would you measure intelligence? standardized tests? which university someone went to? IQ level? type of occupation? the reason some men like less intelligent women is because they feel like these women would be more care-free, easy going, and fun to be around. it's not always about superiority/inferiority as the media would have you believe.
That's fine, but then you can't really criticise average Japanese guys for being repelled by intelligent women when you yourself said if they're not intelligent they're unappealing.

I don't know what animes you see, but I have not seen anything like that

This makes the Japanese male ego sound so fragile and delicate. Reminds me of when a Muslim friend explained why Muslim women have to cover up - she said because men have no self-control, so women have to take away any possible temptation from them. This is similar, as it’s like women have to hold back their intelligence to make men feel better about themselves. In both, it’s the women actually in control.
it's just Hypergamy in action bro
Well you know these 3 ladies are marrying foreigners... if they aren't already😅

johno doh exaaactly. this comment caught my attention! the other girl was somehow right with not exactly using "dumb".
"polish man said women are way more dumber than men and therefore should earn less money."
I’d say he’s somewhat like what Nigel Farage was for the UK on the European Parliament (a hardcore eurosceptic who took on the seat) but with much less impact on national politics.
I think your husband is humble and great then and not one of the 95% who need a women to compliment and entertain them after their work stress.
If he makes more than me, takes no shit and is satisfying me sexually, I agree! I will do whatever he wants in a heartbeat lol
Smart, pretty, and bilingual Japanese girls? I'd say all three of these girls are rare to come across and totally marriage material. I know because I married one just like them!
teach me your ways sensei... lol
Kaizoushin Rare to come across? LOL I mean, cmon... Being smart doesn't mean bilingual. I'm sure there are smart girls to come across other than bilinguals
BooyaBoo I get the feeling you missed the point.
he said it separately, they are bilingual and smart
Dude, I mean... you shouldn't categorize women for having "marriage material", not even when saying it's because she's smart. You don't even know these girls.
I would love to hear the Japanese men's perspective based off of this! I just wonder if Japanese men don't want smart babies. These women are not just intelligent, but also gorgeous.

In my opinion a smart woman is a plus (:
As a woman, this is so sad;;;
well you could look it from a different angle. What about women who would only date men who are smarter then them. A lot of women I know won't date a man who has lower education as them. This is also very sad

Smart or dumb I don't care. I just want a relationship with someone that I can share my insecurities with.
Aww
😂 me too
be prepared for a hard life if you tell women your insecurities because women lose respect for weak men
it's not just Japanese men that feel this, it's all men. I understand this video is about Japan but it's not a national or ethnic issue but a biological instinct for men to provide and protect. this instinct is also why women like men who can provide and protect them, someone who is stronger, taller, more successful, the list goes on and on.
ya you are right but i feel i also like to meet a woman who can provide me too...
No it's not
I actually want a girlfriend that is the same knowledge level as me, it's easier to relate to them and communicate
As someone who had a chance to meet with Japanese men at work, I can tell you that the video is rather misleading. I'm going to shock you guys by saying that Japanese don't want "dumb" girls and instead seem to highly prefer Japanese women who are similarly educated to them.
Rick Ace
Cute culture FTW! XD
BTW, I'm sure the "dumb girl" desire DOES exist, but not with all Japanese men. Then there are some who like women who are smarter than them, and others who prefer a balance.
I prefer a balance, but I'm quite flexible. If things work out okay, then so be it, dumb or smart!
> Just like in the rest of the world, girls in Japan are brought up to be independent and well educated. And also just like in the rest of the world, girls are more likely to get a higher education
Maybe in raw numbers if you count Women's universities and the like (where you don't really learn much and it won't really make you smarter), but I can tell you from my own experience in Japan that on average, the woman/man ratio is much worse than in the west when you consider the regular universities.
After watch this video I understood that what he really meant by that word.. thanks
Yikes! Props to u for leaving him! You deserve better

*If women also want a guy in their league, doesn't that mean its equal*
That's an interesting thought.
A woman's job is not to make a man feel better about himself. Not a mother's job either, if you're a grown man. Same thing goes for vice versa.
+P. Orenji
_A woman's job is not to make a man feel better about himself._
A woman's job is to make her man stronger, to empower him with her behavior. And when a woman chooses to get into a relationship with some man who had courted her, this by default will make him feel better about himself.
_Not a mother's job either, if you're a grown man._
A woman being someone's mother and that same woman acting motherly towards her man, are not the same things. And if a woman would not act motherly toward me, why would I choose her to be the mother of my children?
_Same thing goes for vice versa._
You're not making any sense.
_But if we're at the beginning of a relationship, I'm not going to dumb myself down so you can have higher self-esteem; I'm not going to make myself less competent so that you can feel more competent._
If you could have the choice, would you rather choose yourself a man who is equal to you or the one who is superior to you?
Cheers.
+Anaximander of Apollonia
To be honest, yes, women are attracted to smart men.
+LauryUchiha no man would date a woman with more money than him it's about his honor
if your honor is based on being superior instead of being respectful and trustworthy you need to have a talk with yourself about what your so called "honor" really is. Cause that is not it.
but what's dishonourable about a partner earning more than you? statistically one will always earn more than the other... i don't get what you're saying
+LauryUchiha Somehow you think grabbing a bunch of Japanese guys to make a heavily edited 4 min video is a fair representation for "a lot of men in general".
that's precisely the case , it's always about men 'have' to man up , honestly we don't know how japanese men are brought up , as boys growing to adulthood , what they have to deal with to develop this little complex (some)
my solution is for women stop expecting anything from men , take initiative , do tell what you want , normal guys are so simple , so so easy
no man or woman 's obliged to do anything for another from my perspective
Yuka is so beautiful and smart too, man who will marry her is truly lucky and blessed. :) hope all the best for her and 3 of them of course :)

Having a smart girlfriend can help me with that.

as a foreigner living and studying in Japan I feel this video is very helpful.
The distinction comes from assessment done by the person on the receiving end of clueless behavior, and depending on one's preference, deciding that it is appropriately clueless, and therefore cute, and therefore attractive, OR that it is too clueless, and therefore dumb, and therefore unattractive.
word
Mr Robot
I think the girls made it obvious were open to dating the guys with the lower salary and what not, but the guys backed out once they found out the woman made more/was more educated.

I agree. You are very rational and logical. It's always good to see the other side/other sides of an issue.
