I'm currently playing a pacifist goblin warmage 1/ trickery cleric 1! Looking forward for all the builds!! Specially the way the different dips change the wizard spell selections!
Uuuhh ( clapping my hands in delight) I so look forward to this! Love your videos! Oh my poor DM (husbond)...now I need at least one more longterm campaign and a series of one-shots 😀❤️
Over and over again i come back to the hobgoblin abjurer agathys build or svirfneblin. I think it is phenomenally tanky. Going hexblade makes a lot of sense to avoid doing something like taking the medium armor feat. I was looking at hex (1d6), hexblades curse (prof bonus) and the kensei sharpen the blade feature, and hexblades curse is absolutely the best among them once you reach mid tier for damage alone, before its other benefits. I am a big fan of hex for noncombat situations though.
I have a transmuter forest gnome with a single level dip of knowledge cleric. And he's no pacifist! He's more of a wily and nimble (fade away feat) cc/debuffing wizard with sleet storms, slows and animated objects.
After watching the video: would you consider, at some point in the future, doing a build for a human wizard with the Mark of Making (from the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron)? I think Mark of Making grants additional utility by giving additional cantrip, allowing for swapping one cantrip each long rest and granting the ability to make armor or weapon magical.
@@TreantmonksTemple okay, I'll be looking forward to it. To be honest, most Dragon Marks in WGE are not that great for wizards. But that one in particular definitely has some merits.
What a great selection, I can't wait to enjoy each of them. I am especially excited for Transmutation Halfling, but also for Kobold Necromancer. That is some great synergy that I had never considered! I just considered that it would be an interesting case of going 5 Warlock and 15 Wizard for the Kobold. It would give you access to flight via that strangeness of an Imp carrying a Kobold (another loophole I'd say) and 3rd level slots on short rest for the ultimate army. Too long to come 'online' I'd say-but I'd give that a go if I ever played a game that started at level 10+.
At some point can you do a guide on magic items for other classes like a druid? Most DMs I've found have a very difficult time finding magic items for a druid that aren't Staff of the Woodlands.
I pretty much did this with my current character. Started as a Diviner then remade into an Illusionist before the campaign even began. After the first couple of weeks I changed to an Enchanter then about a month later respecced into an Abjurer. Thankfully my DM is pretty lenient at the start of campaigns at letting players get their characters 'right'. The necro, the peace, the tank. So damn interesting and i never new multiclassing could be so helpful. An experienced player 20+ years in our group was dismissive of it and said it just dilutes the power of the base class so i had deferred to his wisdom and not looked into it. Now you have shown me a secret door!! I eagerly await to see how it is all done. Do u have an affiliate link for dnd beyond that i can use to give something back to you for all the passion you share?
About the warlock armor of shadows trick. The same can be accomplished by a deep gnome or a high level wizard. So probably legit. Also, it is not that many hitpoints , especially if you multiclass. As a DM I would allow it because it is not game changing, in combat you cannot use this trick so it would be useful for maybe one or two extra fights. With 20 levels of wizard it would be 45 hp in 2-3 fights not a big deal so 90 to 135 hp.
Please do a hobgoblin war wizard! I have my own build for the concept, but I'm really interested in what you would do with it. EDIT: hmm... abjurer. Iiiinteresting. I'll be looking forward to your war and abjurer videos to see how that all works out.
I'm hyped for this! Interesting concept and presumably with your high standard! :) I'm looking forward to contrast the various wizards. I liked how you took some race-typical choices like gnome illutionists and high elf blade singer, but I wonder if the hobgoblin would have been thematically truer as an evocation wizard? As Volo's guide to monster describes hobgoblin Devastators on page 161 (and 47) . (Also, I bet the hobgoblin will take the medium armor feat. I expect no prize if I'm right).
My wizard just got permakilled in a recent campaign (Level 3). So unfortunately, I don't get to keep going as a Gnome Conjurer. But, I may keep him going in some solo campaigns to playtest. ;)
Lookin forward to the Enchanter. Also woot, Pathfinder 2E! Looking forward to any videos you got about it. Got any initial thoughts or first impressions if you've read through some of the rulebook?
Treantmonk, if you have time would you mind doing a God-wizard build but using the Lore Bard class to level 20? I'm curious to see if you can get just as powerful a spellcaster but with higher HP, more skill versatility, and a more optimized use for your bonus action through inspirations and healing words. The race would obviously be a Half-Elf. Thanks!
Also, an important part of this build would be changing out spells as you go through different tiers of play. For example, you will probably want to consider changing out spells like Sleep and Polymorph once you reach a certain level.
Great video, High Optimagus Chris. Any advice for a newly crafted wizard in Curse of Strahd that rolled stats (poorly) and only had odd starting stats. Plain human is easiest and most boring choice. I did get one 15, so intelligence is covered. I was thinking about going abjurer to make up for the low constitution. Thanks for all you do.
Yeah, Abjurer is probably a good choice. I would definitely do a dip to get some decent armor and a shield. The best defence is not getting hit in the first place.
Pretty cool! I’m a little worried that a lot of these builds use monstrous races, which aren’t as commonly available as the non-monstrous races from the PHB and Volos. Would love to see “the best vanilla phb wizard” or some AL-legal (PHB+1) builds as follow ups. Wizards for ever and ever, really- can’t wait
@@TreantmonksTemple The Augur could be PHB only (at least, the way you described it in this video) depending on how much you're relying on Xanathar's spells. Definitely could be restricted to PHB+1.
Came up with this: Choose the halfling race for rerolling ones and unlocking the racial feats second chance and bountiful luck Take a level in cleric in the light domain giving you the warding flare ability (disadvantage to any melee attack to an ally within 30 ft, can be used an equal amount of times to your wisdom modifier) Cleric will also give some additional skills and a sweet AC Take the cantrips guidance and resistance. On top of this you gain access to bane and bless Continue with 19 levels of diviner wizard. Focus on spells that will bend the odds in your favour (such as synaptic static, hold monster and foresight). You'll also gain portants further solidifying the theme (save or suck spells are now better). For feats take lucky (3 rerolls a day), war caster (so you can actually use that shield proficiency), second chance (use a reaction so melee attacks against you have disadvantage) and bountiful luck (expend a reaction so anyone on the table can rerolls nat 1s) You are now the manipulater of fate and the god of dice. Get ready to annoy the DM. Any advice?
I've been playing an illusionist for awhile (Just about to break into 9th level). At my table going invisible doesn't automatically mask your square, you have to take the hide action as well. I don't know if that's RAW or not, but if so it makes me wish I had gone goblin.
The Evoker should be "Blastum 5E." Which leads to a theme for the post-wizard-builds videos: You could do a series of "Builds for Reoccurring NPCs" DMs need help at least as much as players. You could start that series with "Gutboy Barrelhouse 5E" Proceed through "Morgan Ironwolf 5E" - retain the fact that her features are so stronk (Ironwolf) that you can see them popping even through her chainmail armor (which does cover her realistically, otherwise!) Then "Black Dougal 5E" "Keak 5E" (and, of course, "Obmi 5E") "Gleed 5E" "Barjin 5E" and, of course, the infamous but rarely seen "Balto 5E" Special Note: "Aggro the Axe" was ahead of his time. Who spoke in terms of "taking aggro" in 1979? Evidently, Gygax was a diviner. But evidently 'Aggro the Axe' was one of the PCs, not an NPC, so he's not listed above.
Curious, do you see the ritual casting of Alarm as a loophole to recharge Arcane Ward or working as intended? Is it the speed at which the Warlock does this that makes it an issue for people? The only difference I see is that you would have a stronger Ward with the straight Wiz that takes an hour or so to recharge VS a weaker Ward with the Wiz-Lock which will take a few rounds to recharge? Both seem like they would need to happen out of combat anyway, no? So is this really a problem? Once the Wizard got to Level 18 they'd gain Spell Mastery and could drop the ritual casting and move over to rounds like the Wiz-Lock with the added bonus being they've had a stronger Ward and weren't behind on spell-casting levels for their whole career? IDK. I don't see it being a big deal personally.
I have no doubt all 3 are loopholes, though I cannot say if they were loopholes the designers were aware of and OK with when the game was originally published. My instinct is that the designers intended for recharging the Arcane Ward to occur with the expenditure of spell slots on abjuration spells. As for balance, I'm inclined to agree with you that it isn't going to be a big deal, though I do think that an opportunity to take a few rounds out of combat and a short rests worth of time (which will increase every level) out of combat are not at all equivalent. I expect this difference in time would make the Alarm loophole OK at more tables than the Armor of Shadows one, though I suspect that either would be more likely OK than Deep Gnome and Nondetection. As for 18th level, I don't see that being a problem at any table. If your DM is running an 18th level campaign, spell loopholes are the least of their worries.
My least anticipated builds are front-loaded, and my most anticipated are at the end. Oh well ... had to happen to someone. I wish you would cover all the players handbook races before dipping to other books. Dragonborn and Half Orc wizards for the win!!
Fire Genasi or Feral Tiefling would up your survivability with fire resistance and either a DEX or CON bump. Obviously the +1 INT too. I don't think you're planning on using either of those yet and they're good Wizard choices.
Certainly an option, but considering how Treantmonk explained that he wasn't interested in exploiting loopholes unlikely. Though it's still a fine race without the feat.
Chris, about races, could you stick to PHB races? Most of us Adventure League players are stuck with the PHB+1 rule, which means if we go out for a VGTM race or SCAG race, we lose out on all the awesome Xanathar spells. That would be most helpful.
I don't want to make too many changes to what I've now committed to, but what I can do is provide a quick note on each video where the build isn't AL legal, what are the easiest changes that would make it AL appropriate. In most cases, the race is not integral to the build.
There's one race that I'm confused as to why you don't showcase, and that's the Warforged Envoy. In my view, the Warforged Envoy is up there with races like the winged feral tiefling for best wizard race in the game, especially if you're allowing multiclassing. A human wizard with plate and a shield can get an AC of 20, whereas a Warforged Envoy with Heavy Plating and a shield starts with 20 AC, and gets better by level 5 when proficiency scales, ending with 24 AC by level 17. They also get +1 Con, and two other +1s they can distribute as they wish (Probably to Int and Dex), and some great features as well. I'm not sure if it's because Ebberon material is unofficial, but if it's legal, I think this is one of the best races.
This comment would probably make more sence under the 9th level spell video but this is the most recent one so anyways... About true polymorph: There are some creatures like zombies, skeletons and golems that follow the commands of the one that created them, at least it says so in the description. So lets say you polymorph a stone into a zombie. Does the zombie still follow your commands after one hour because his discription says that he follows the commands of his master? If you'd play it like that wouldn't true polymorph be one of the best spells to create an army in your downtime? With this you'd get a free golem or zombie beholder per day (the zombie beholder could be very good for basebuilding too since he can carve a cave into stone with one of his lasers)? Screw wish with find greater steed, just turn your chair into a minoraurus skeleton.
'Until then, I'm gonna sit back and relax, and I'm gonna have some fun, because D&D is for everyone' has to be the lamest catchphrase ever. Still love ya though Chris.
@@TreantmonksTemple You're restricted to 75gp per level from 1-4 & 150gp from 5-10. It makes transcribing spells extremely cost-inhibitive and takes away all of the wizard's versatility. :(

This is gonna be awesome! If you had to pick one rare-rarity item for a divination wizard, what would it be?
Ring of Spell Storing of course. I give a number of ideas in my Wizard Equipment video. ruclips.net/video/zg5UjitJT8c/видео.html
I have so much excitement
The Evoker should be "Blastum 5E."
Which leads to a theme for the post-wizard-builds videos:
You could do a series of "Builds for Reoccurring NPCs"
DMs need help at least as much as players.
You could start that series with "Gutboy Barrelhouse 5E"
Proceed through "Morgan Ironwolf 5E" - retain the fact that her features are so stronk (Ironwolf) that you can see them popping even through her chainmail armor (which does cover her realistically, otherwise!)
Then "Black Dougal 5E"
"Keak 5E" (and, of course, "Obmi 5E")
"Gleed 5E"
"Barjin 5E"
and, of course, the infamous but rarely seen "Balto 5E"
Special Note: "Aggro the Axe" was ahead of his time.
@@TreantmonksTemple Totally agree with 18th level worries. Poor DMs.
Thank you.
My least anticipated builds are front-loaded, and my most anticipated are at the end. Oh well ... had to happen to someone. I wish you would cover all the players handbook races before dipping to other books. Dragonborn and Half Orc wizards for the win!!
Please do the chronurgy build 🧙🏾♂️✌🏾✨
What does Hobgoblin offer the Abjurer build if you're getting Medium Armor and Shield proficiency from a multiclass?
Hmmm...my original version of the build was not multiclass at all. Adding Hexblade does create some redundancy. I'll have to think about it. Thanks.
Fire Genasi or Feral Tiefling would up your survivability with fire resistance and either a DEX or CON bump. Obviously the +1 INT too. I don't think you're planning on using either of those yet and they're good Wizard choices.
Deep gnome!
Certainly an option, but considering how Treantmonk explained that he wasn't interested in exploiting loopholes unlikely.
Though it's still a fine race without the feat.
Pathfinder 2e is really fun. That is what my main group plays.
wizard theurgy will you be doing each domain or just a handful of the most fun domains?
Not doing any unofficial material
Chris, about races, could you stick to PHB races? Most of us Adventure League players are stuck with the PHB+1 rule, which means if we go out for a VGTM race or SCAG race, we lose out on all the awesome Xanathar spells. That would be most helpful.
Please don't stick to just phb races. So many channels do that. Quite a lot of people play games that aren't Adventurers League.
I don't want to make too many changes to what I've now committed to, but what I can do is provide a quick note on each video where the build isn't AL legal, what are the easiest changes that would make it AL appropriate. In most cases, the race is not integral to the build.
Is there any chance for UA archetype such as inventor and theurgy after the official archetypes are covered?
Gaah, a teaser? I was hoping for the Bladesinger , but ok, will see you next week then
The Beguilder? 😋
Tease. I was expecting a build today...
> For everyone
What about trickster rabbits? Not one Bugs Bunny based build in all of this!
Bugs is a Bard/Rogue
@@TreantmonksTemple Lepus-raced Bard/Rogue builds when?
@@Porphyrogenitus1 I think BB requires epic level rules.
@@TreantmonksTemple You're not wrong. Or something like the Mythic ruurs from PF.
Totally broken character, but lovable.
I don't have Eberron, so I haven't used any Eberron content. Once the official version comes out (which is coming soon), I'll grab it.
Week 5 and 6 baby!
A kobold necromancer? I never knew I needed something so bad in my life until this very moment. Now you are the minions bigger races, muhahaha! 😈
Can't wait until illusionist.
Can we have the Hobgoblin Abjurer first?
Afraid I am now committed to the schedule I posted.
@@TreantmonksTemple I do hope to get to see it before the new Adventure League Season :)
> illusionist
> not a gnome
What is this heresy?
Multiclassing is for chumps. But I bow to your knowledge and love of the game and helping new players.
Unearthed Arcana's Lore Master op god wizard build?
I only have access to the PHB so a lot of these I cannot do because I don't have the races.
SIgh....
Oh yeah!
This comment would probably make more sence under the 9th level spell video but this is the most recent one so anyways...
About true polymorph:
There are some creatures like zombies, skeletons and golems that follow the commands of the one that created them, at least it says so in the description.
KOBOLD Warlock WIZARD! :P Rip, missed opportunity. Although at least you picked a kobold! :)
Fire genasi
'Until then, I'm gonna sit back and relax, and I'm gonna have some fun, because D&D is for everyone' has to be the lamest catchphrase ever. Still love ya though Chris.
Nice the auger is early
Im playing a halfling divination wizard with Bountiful luck feat my group loves me but the dm is waiting for me to die lol
I love this series, but I play in AL and right now wizard's pretty much unplayable because of the way they handle gold. :(
I am unfamiliar with the restriction, what is it?
@@TreantmonksTemple You're restricted to 75gp per level from 1-4 & 150gp from 5-10. It makes transcribing spells extremely cost-inhibitive and takes away all of the wizard's versatility. :(
@@vaevictusasmadi84 Well, as I mentioned in this video, I will be doing "worst case scenario" for all builds, as in, no extra spells. Wizard still has more spell versatility than other arcane casters.
"The Beguilder" lol
