Hi friends!
These meat birds are growing so fast! We haven't lost one yet, they're good and healthy. In fact they're growing so fast, it's already time to move them from their chick brooder that we built, into our homemade PVC pipe chicken tractor!
The chicks are always so excited to get outside into the grass where they can eat bugs, flowers and grass which of course is their natural diet! These chicks were hatched in a hatchery, so they've never seen grass! They immediately start scratching around, chasing bugs & pecking around. They're happy lil chicks that's for sure.
Raising meat birds in a tractor makes things so much easier! Let me tell you something, in case you didn't know...meat birds POOP a lot. In order to raise them in a clean, healthy environment...you'd have to clean out their coop at least every couple of days! I'm not kidding, it's gross. A chicken tractor eliminates this altogether.
There is no cleaning involved. You simply go out every couple of days and move the tractor to a new spot! And you're fertilizing your grass while you're at it. In addition to the feed that you supply them as a supplement, your meat birds will be of the best quality for your kitchen table as they're getting an abundance of their natural diet every day with grass, flowers and bugs!
In today's video I'll show you our homemade chicken tractor that we built out of PVC pipe which makes it a very light design and super easy to move. It's nothing fancy, but boy does it get the job done right.

Do you have predator pressure where you are? And if so do you move them inside at night?
Predator pressure? Not sure what you mean. Maybe you meant predator problem? We do not really have issues with predators where we’re at. Unless they dig down under the chicken tractor, they can’t get to the chickens anyway.☺️
How much space do you have to move them around? I am considering raising meat birds in the spring but we only have 4 acres.
Hello Sharon! We only had 1 acre at the home in this video. (We’ve since moved). But only 1 acre and that 1 acre had our home on it, a shop, our regular chicken coop and a large garden and greenhouse! So 4 acres will be more than enough to raise meat birds! 😊

Hi, just to clarify. After the chicks are old enough for the tractor, they stay in that day and night till slaughter correct?
Correct. Once they’re old enough, we move them into the tractor & that’s where they live until slaughter.
Do you have dimensions and how many birds you put in there?
Hey there! This tractor was 10X10 We used 10ft PVC sections. And we always put 25-30 birds in it with no issues. They had plenty of room, especially with moving it every 2 days or so…they poop a lot so the tractor was perfect because it was constantly moved & they always had a new batch of grass/flowers etc, to eat. 😊
Do meat birds roost? Been watching a lot of videos and don’t notice any roosts in most designs
I’ve never had a meat bird try to roost. They’re so heavy that I think they’d have a hard time hopping up to roost. They just sleep on the ground together. At least that’s been our experience. 😊
