I find it interesting that the locomotives are four (4) axle rather than the six (6) axle common on freight trains. Of course, thsi video is twelve (12) years old, so they are not using the same locomotives today in 2024.
Just as in aviation, a two-engined jet will always be more fuel efficient than a four-engined jet. So, two locos will always be more efficient than four locos. Four locos means more maintenance costs to keep the extra engine serviceable. The Auto Train is just fine being pulled by two engines, and FYI, Amtrak does use a third engine from time to time. Plenty of videos on here which show this.
I don't know what passenger train is the longest in the world but I think maybe The Ghan in Australia may be close at 44 and maybe recently with 52 carriages. See: www.traveller.com.au/the-ghan-set-to-become-australias-longest-passenger-train-gp42y5 for more info. For frieght/goods trains, there was a record set for the longest train in th Pilbara region of Western Australia. The freight train's length was about 7.3 Kms. Back to the Ghan I think it got up to about 52 carriages in the last year or two. We have ridden it twice and it's a good exercise to walk from one end to the other.
most of those passenger cars don't weigh anywhere near what a fully loaded freight car does... The train only makes one stop between its full trip. If it made multiple stops and was stop and go, it'd be ideal for more locomotives
chaosdemonwolf1 If course it is, in fact you can't ride unless one of the people on your group puts their car in the train. Otherwise you have to take the Silver Meteor or Silver Star.
not true. I have taken it without a car. It just doesn't make sense to take it unless you have a car to bring because you have the silver meteor and silver star as you stated that run the same route with a slight drift in direction when you get around Virginia. I took it because it was more direct to the area in Virginia I was going and the superliners had better coach seats than the amfleet cars did. This was in 2013 when they still had a smoking car too. I had a cigar on the trip up.
GeminiJeter1027 Yep.. load up your car for vacation, drive to the station, load your car on the train, ride it to florida, then get in your car and drive to your hotel.
@@bobbydale1938 They detach the car hoppers in sections, because each hopper has in-ramps, and they unite like tiny bridges in them, and then they unload the cars.
I'd hate to be late for work, stuck at a railroad crossing, and waiting for this to go by.
Ah wow, listen to those P40's work.
I love this long train too!

I could steer any locomotive like northfolk n southern railroad,...I was born that way, more than a railroad fan pal"🎄🆗🆗✈️☃️☃️
You might say, the U.S. longest Train, as well as The longest Train in FL.. or longest Combo...
Since no more Circus Psgr / Cargo Combi Train's....
Longest passenger train in the US
yep only two engines. it was an fun catch. thanks for the veiw !!!
did not know that Amtrak transported cars
Actually they don't, But* they transport cars booked by their owners on this train only.
Cool.
Nyeouch that was slow.... When trains go fast in the USA, snails laugh.
This comment was made by the British Rail Squad
That was amazing. every person in those Amtrak passenger cars had his very own private Amtrak auto transport rail car.🤪😂🤣
This train is dispatched by CSX in Jacksonville. It competes for a slot on the former RF&P mainline with VRE trains and CSX freight.
There's nothing newer then ten year old videos??
Yes there is
The only Superliner on the East Coast.
No the Capital limited also has superliner equipment. Trains 29 & 30.

what an excellent way to travel
Only 2 engines for the whole thing?!?!?

They should call it the Amfreight train🚆
Probably the passengers taking their cars with them

Dammm than how long is the station than?🤔🤔🤔 and with only two engines🤔🤔🤔
They break it up...two platforms for passenger loading and 5 or 6 for car loading. Once cars/passengers are loaded, they put the train together.
Both of the P40’s were rebuilt to P42 spec. they took the ones in best shape for the retrofit.
How many cars
Usually about 15 passenger cars and up to 33 auto racks
Wait amtrak transports cars???
Sigh. To live in blissful ignorance lol.
GeminiJeter1027 Yep.. load up your car for vacation, drive to the station, load your car on the train, ride it to florida, then get in your car and drive to your hotel.
Ou ok thanks
Do they unload the cars without decoupling each car ?

Haha so fake it's just it's just putting like 5 trains together on photo shop or something
No. It is a real train. Been on it several times. Used to work across the street from it's Lorton, VA station.
It's real I ride it quite a bit.
😱Wow that is long, it now qualify as a freightliner/train👀🚅
