I wish US flip phones looked even half this good! Aside from the LG Wine 2, which is pretty slick, it seems that every flip phone available in the states is chunky and hideous. I wish this one worked here!

sharps phone line goes a long way back.. before android was popular in Japan they had feature phones that could record in 4K with 3d screens and were completely sumbersible. i had one of their aquos flip phones which was good but lacking in features compared to their non-android phones.
Record in 4k, are you serious? Which phone is that? That's crazy!
And of course, this won’t work in the US, right? So annoying we can’t get decent advanced flips like this. Ugh!

I think the (Mode 1 Retro II) flip phone works in many countries besides Japan. Just make sure to check the network bands supported in your country to make sure it does work. They have all the info you need to check before buying available in their official website.
Kyocera phones are made in Japan, but, they are made for USA consumers, so, I guess this indeed is the first Japanese phone, as far as bandwidth that’s useable etc.
Bought one of these awhile ago. I live in the midwest of the US, and service has been pretty decent here with AT&T prepaid. I just wish there was a way to get root.
That’s my problem with most of these Android based dumb phones. Very few of them have root access.

What do you mean by “pretty decent?” I live in the east, but if it can send messages and receive calls with minimal issues, I’ll buy one of these.
i used to rock japanese phones back in the day. before the smartphone era. they were impressive, even if alot of japan only things didnt work
Japan has a lot of nice phones like this. I have the SH-01J which I didn't use for a while, and I changed providers during that time. Unfortunately it won't work on my new provider as they push 5g and my phone didn't have 5G. I'm now on the hunt for a 5G JP flip phone....

@@positivevibesveda Not a 5G one, but for some reason the Sharp SH-02L works on 4G when the 01J wouldn't. It's not as good a phone, though. It's much less user-friendly and the built in touchpad on the 01J is missing from the 02L.
But does this phone have 4g?

i missed the keitai era. Sharp have released a lot of Aquos SH line up. what year was this model released?

Hello Jose, I watch your videos from Turkey. Do you know European simcards work with this phone? I read some reviews that phone blocks itself after using EU or US simcard.
It gets blocked usually because it's not an unlocked phone
What about battery life? How long does it lasts after full charge? I have heard that they're popular for having insane battery backup?!

See if you can download the apk to another device and send the file via bluetooth to your sharp phone

I am beyond disillusioned with US tech corporations and twiddling my fingers hoping that companies will pull their heads out of their behinds and just make enjoyable phones. It's been years since I've been excited by a single modern mobile device that's come out; and I haven't been excited about a cell phone since I was a kid getting a patterned track phone from the boost store.
So I'm gonna pick a phone that I like the build of, and Frankenstein the hell out of it.
Does anyone have any experience with cracking these sorts of waterproof Japanese flip phones open? Looking for documentation for these types of products is always a pain. I figured I might as well attempt to research if someone else has already achieved what I'm trying to do first to save myself some unnecessary strife. But I 100% plan to to gut some phones so I can essentially recreate a flip phone to fit my needs. Any documentation on the actual tech would be greatly appreciated. I'm gonna be pissed if I accidentally get sucked down the rabbit hole and end up spending years building an OS. So hopefully the Frankensteining works out in my favor. Any useful advice appreciated 👍

It will work, but hotspot won't. If you need hotspot, the Epic is the one you need :)
Could it possibly download google voice through an APK or something similar in order to use it in the US?
Gboard works well for voice to text. Swiftkey as well.

why do japanese flip phones look better than western ones
because they market them for the general public, in the west flip phones are only sold to people who dont have another choice or for buissness where aesthetics don't matter. its abt the status a smart phone has in the west. to these companies anyone who wants a flip phone either is too broke to care or is looking for a burner. so effort isnt put into them at all, which keeps poor people in a loop of having to buy bad phones over and over, instead of a good presentable flip phone like this that would last significantly longer

@@anithebanani1946 we hate poor people so much in the west it makes me so sad, and then we make them poorer and we blame them. and then force they too live in a country were money and status are the only way to be respected. the disheveled man waiting for the bus with a 25$ phone, is not human to many who drive past.

It's a built in TV remote control. That's why it has the infrared available.

Yes, but it's not very readable. It will be on the little screen, but most of the time it will say call incoming and not the #

Access it? Yes. Usable? No. You will be able to get some very basic directions, but not full functionality.

Not really effective sadly. It may be possible, but because it runs an older version of Android it probably won’t be stable.

Very interesting phone! What is the exact model? is a SH-01J? You commented that it run android 8 right? Did you updated it? I did a bit of research and seems like they usually ship with android 5.1 and some comments pointed out that you can only update it if you are connected to a Japanese network.
I mainly worry about some apps not working because of the version, but I am mostly interested in using it as an actual phone.
It came updated apparently. But I’ll double check the version. I bought it used so that may have been a factor. Some apps won’t work if it’s down to 5.1 for sure. Make sure to get a used one and updated one.
