mohamed shifan right?? Im considering to go back to one of those fancy (actually usable and modern) flip phones, just because you stick out more. People are immediately like “whooaaa whats that!”
It was all of us who shift the importance of these "personality phones" for smartphones in the first place 🙄. I remember not wanting to trade my old flip and blackberry for it. But now I'm actually liking my smartphone more. After all, I like going forward. And I accomplish more things with my newest device, with more ease. And I can put unique casings to it, if I feel it's just a "soulless, boring, black box" . These personality phones are all looking the same too back then. People just put charms and stickers to make it look "different". But it's the same clones, if thousand of people all use that same pink or blue piece. If anything, you should thank the charms and phone straps for contributing to the "personality".
The Japanese company sharp and Kyocera have flip phones that runs android, and the keyboard works as a trackpad, the sharp model is 601Sh, the kyocera model is 701Kc
It's really fucking sad when keitai phones back in 2003 look better than smart phones today. Smart phones today don't even have water proofing. smh (I own a smart-phone, so no hate plox)
Well i was born 2000 and i remember in 2009 having a flip phone… i stil hav it for the vibes and i record videos of my chaser since it gives a vintage vibe …but yes i wished id be born in early 80 so i could live trough 90 and late 20s
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who had a huge obsession with Japanese flip phones in the mid 2000s. I've always wanted the Sharp Aquos 007SH which was a flip phone with a touchscreen and ran Android. I blame the J-Horror movie franchise Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call) and games like Calling for the Wii for fueling my keitai obsession
Feature Phones...I remember those. Never had one, but they were the closest to a computer before smartphones. Those phones had some pretty awesome games!
Ahhhh Japanese phones are the greatest! I personally imported a Kyocera Gratina 4G and even tho i have a Galaxy Note10+, its my favorite phone ever, its incredibly fun to use and since it actually runs Android, i can use all my apps on it! The trackpad functionality on the keypad isnt enough to replace a touchscreen but honestly thats why its incredibly fun to use, the workarounds you have to find make it a really fun phone for tinkerers like me! Also never had a phone that has gathered more attention than this thing, constant questions about what it is and what it does, its insane!
iam 17 years old and so excited to collect old phone console and other famous things before i was born haha. by the way did those phone can be operated
Back when I thought my Motorola razr was slick i watched Tokyo drift and they were slive streaming the race to each other. Was this really possible? I gotta know more about these Japanese phones.
Japanese society has historically been defined by uniformity and collective thinking. “Hammer the nail that sticks out” kind of thing. Yet, a lot of their early 2000s tech were all about individuality and personalization. Just look at these keitai phones and minidisc players from Japan. They came in so many shapes, colors, control schemes and random special features. They were loud statements of personality and uniqueness. Now look at the Western world, where individuality is valued and “standing out” is a good thing. Yet, most of the devices that come out of the US are plain, one-size-fits-all slabs. It has come to a point that people will question you if you aren’t carrying either an iPhone or a Samsung device. You’d be lucky to find a premium device that comes in more than 2 or 3 colors. The size and and shape of a screen notch is the most personality devices have, and I feel that even that will be ironed out and just about all smartphones will be indistinguishable in the hand.
Due to quarantine my phones got broken and seems it is fine to disconnect to the world, I really want to buy old phones like these flip phones, especially made in Japan. I really feel and wanted to go in Japan just to buy old flip phones and I guess that is fine text and call is still much important and I felt really inspired because of this video ♥
Their of feature phones in Japan has a unique features like mobile TV tuner(1seg), e-wallet(Osaifu-keitai, using FeliCa technology), IrDA blaster, dan waterproof(IPX5)
oh my god im rewatching this video after a while (ive gotten into final fantasy in the time being) and im just now finding out about the advent children flip phone!!! i rewatched advent children in theaters not too long ago and the phone was so cool!!!!
The blue from 6:35 is probably a Fujitsu which actually came out in 2007. And yes, it had a fingerprint sensor back then can you imagine? It is so sad these Japanese brands(most of them) are long gone! I remember back in 2007 there where 11 companies which made phones, this is insane! Even Casio had phones! 😆 Today there is only Sony, Sharp, Kyocera and Fujitsu. Sharp was bought by Foxconn back in 2016(66% of stakes). Lenovo just bought the bankrupt Fujitsu(the mobile division). So only Sony and Kyocera are 100% Japanese now. 😢
Hi! That phone at minute 4 is a Panasonic. Telling the name P900 will not help much those who do not know much about these phones. The next one is made by Sharp. Sh comes from Sharp. P comes from Panasonic. SO comes from Sony Ericsson. F comes from Fujitsu, and N comes from Nec. 🙂
Here are the models shown in the video: Nokia 7280, Sony Ericsson W580i, P900iV (Panasonic), 920sh (Sharp), V604sh (Sharp), F-01A (Fujitsu), 931sh (Sharp), 9130c (Sharp, not based off of any Japanese model), 933sh (Sharp), Aquos S2 (Sharp). 5:49 - it is not a paper thin SIM card, it is a very small flexible PCB that allows the chip to communicate between the SIM and the phone to bypass the network lock. It does not unlock additional radio bands. This was because Japanese phones were designed to be locked permanently at the time. 6:30 - The F-01A came out in 2008. 8:40 - The Sharp 9130C is not a ripoff. However, it was a unique model developed exclusively for China and came unlocked since there was a huge market for Japanese phones. Unfortunately, it is stripped down when compared to the functionalities of the Japanese models. Are the phones all sold by now? Thanks.
Yes, these are Peters Private collection that he found under a table when he was moving into the good e-reader office And yes, he knows what hypersims are All the phones are gone
I will actually buy a flip phone when my current smart phone contract runs out. I will still be getting one with Internet access for reasons but I just want to go back to the oldschool things, I really prefer those much over current smartphones, those still have personality and cool features !
Is there any way to buy that P900 FOMA iV online? Or is it only available in Japan now? The last one I found online was listed at nearly $4000 on eBay... not my price range for a phone. AND I want one that works in Japan, because I'm gonna teach English there. Any help?
Oh my goodness, I loved this video. I am still oddly addicted to collecting older phones. I LOVED the look of the final "slate" phone you showed! What is your eBay channel, I might be interested in some of the stuff you are selling on? You mentioned you would link to it but I cannot see it anywhere. Thanks!
Would hyper sims work in other countries like South Korea? I wanna get an authentic flip phone from Japan but don't know if it'll work with South Korean sims.
I just saw this video and it says for years like dang I wish I would have saw this sooner I would have definitely bought all of them some pretty cool phones
If you plan on collecting older devices proper storage is key. Remember batteries eventually swell and leak so removing them when not in use will save you plenty of headache.
Cloud’s phone is the P900iv. If anyone wants to find one your best bet is eBay and Buyee. Good luck finding it. It’s rare. Also to the person in the video by any chance is their Before crisis final fantasy vii on any of the phones?
Japanese phones before the iphone was released were way better than american phones they were faster they were more aesthetically pleasing more modern looking and way more features, i-mode was also way better than wap if you ever used wap then you'll know
Japan really lives in the future. Too bad, phones nowadays don't have those additional features. Like, damn, they said technology advanced, so it is understandable and predicated that we should have better phones than the ones in the past right? BUT NO. We had the degraded versions instead. It's so sad just thinking about how products' qualities have degraded overtime. We're wasting way too much resources than before by making products that easily breaks.
Phones with personalities. Modern smartphones all look alike like clones.
