The Best Bang Per Buck Automatic Dress Watch Ever? - The Orient Star Classic Review EL05004W

- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- Today I review the highly appropriately named Orient Star Classic that was very kindly sent for my consideration by Long Island Watches. This being my third Orient, I was some what curious to find out just how much better the more premium Orient Star range was over their entry level pieces I had previously experienced. I was blown away by the luxury standard of quality, its in house movement and elegant sophisticated retro look making this one of the most bang per buck watches of all time. Now the bad news, my dilemma on if I should buy this amazing piece or send it back and miss out on this great deal from LIW?
The watch is currently on sale and can be purchased directly here:
www.longislandwatch.com/Orient...
The strap I wore in this video can be purchased directly here:

It's Thursday, 11:50 in the evening. I'm just scrolling through YT searching for a review of another Orient Star. By coincidence I found this video.
And now guess what I did while watching: I jumped off the sofa, put my Orient Star Classic on my wrist and now I'm smiling like an idiot! :D
Thanks TGV for this sweet review :)
I wish I had not found this channel, due to the fact I keep buying watches based on your reviews. keep up the good work. Jason
Jason Wilson haha ;-)
Prepare to spend more money!
Thank you Jason, very kind.
Best regards,
TGV
Jason Wilson:
I found myself in the same situation. I already bought a Seiko Presage cocktail time from watching the review here.
Good video as always. I agree and RUclips is the worst thing that ever happened for compulsive watch buyers! Which one would you say is best - this or the cocktail time? The straps are terrible on the cocktail time, straight nasty, but the dials look great. From the video this looks like a better all rounder?
@@81tnguyen wearing one right now and you can't go wrong with the Presage in terms of looks, quality, and value.
Thank you for the video. It's wonderful to get useful, informative, and passionate information from the same source, with the added entertainment of hearing you battling aloud the struggle so many of us have experienced! Keep up the good work. Incidentally, because of this video I've pulled the trigger on the Orient Star AF02005S. I won't go on about it, but I appreciate the informed nudge!
Keep it up.
That is a beautiful and very elegant timepiece. I love the way you explain the design in such great detail. So glad that I discovered your channel this year. All the Best. ~ Dave.
Geekanoids That means a hell of a lot to hear that, will not be forgotten, thank you Dave!
Best regards as always,
TGV
Really love your review on this exquisite dress watch. I have three dress watches at the moment, two Rotary watches and a Citizen Eco Drive and all quartz movement. Have been looking for a mechanical dress watch for a while and this really does look good. Many thanks TGV for your reviews which I find very informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work.
Background Music: Bach's Concerto for Oboe and Violin in C minor BWV 1060R. Nice!
TSV applauds
Thanks - great review. Your enthusiasm is so infectious. So good to see so many close-ups with sharp, focussed camera work and also such an in depth review. "Even the watch snobs will have a hard time saying anything negative about this" - well said! I really want one now too! I love the blue dial orient star classic but that only seems to be a JDM.
EDIT: I bought the black dial version 2 years ago. I where it the most often out of all my collection - fantastic watch!
Love the channel, TGV, and I've learned so much from you sharing your love of life and watches! Keep up the great work! Found (and purchased) this Orient Star Classic a few weeks ago at Creation for $278-wow. All best regards, Eric
Great review! I just came across your channel and really appreciate you insight on the watches you review. I never thought of adding an Orient to my collection but after watching this video you've made me a believer. Thanks
Loved watching you talking yourself into keeping that beauty. It was definitely love at first sight...
Just discovered this channel few days ago and I enjoyed a lot. Great reviews and I certainly a regular viewer from now on. Fall in love with the Orient black Ray raven and Bombino. Will get them as soon as possible. Well done and continue the efforts! :-)
Great review........fantastic to hear passionate watch reviews. For the enthusiast like myself, your true admiration for the pieces you review would strike a chord with the internal dialogue that all watch collectors go through in their heads when a piece arrives in the mail regardless of price point. I nominate Zodiac Sea Wolf.......at 39mm I think you'll enjoy it. Keep it up.
I have ordered one as I have a Mako which has been hammered over the last two years with no issues. Looks great with the strap.
Keep well sir from Noel in the UK
I just purchased one. Love the retro look and smaller size. I wish the Bambino was also 38.5mm.
Dude, this is the best i have ever seen in my life...
nice wathc with a fantastic strap... together you made it Perfetc. congrtl.
Thank you for this excellent review. I just ordered my star classic and can't wait to get it. Your review helped me choose it. I feel I got a good deal at $390.00.
Love all your reviews. Excellent picture/video quality. The use of gloves and the wooden "pick" to highlight the details is really nice.
Thank you so much Stuart, very kind.
Best regards,
TGV
My Orient Mako gets more time on my wrist than anything else. I can't stop admiring it. The craftsmanship rivals my SMP 007, almost. I could only imagine how nice the Star is. You've got me wanting this one. My vote, keep it.
Quite the entertaining channel you've got there!
Thank you for getting back to me. I ordered the sarb last week and love it. However the more I watch this video the more the OS is appealing. Like you I may end up with both!!!
Andrew Wallace haha I dont blame you. I wore my Sarb today in fact, you will spot it in the video towards the very end ;-) I have it on a Hirsch Blue strap, simply love it.
Let me know how it goes,
Thanks for sharing,
Best regards,
TGV
Way to go, TGV. A realist review of a realistically priced, dare I say it, time piece?
Dear TGV,
Because of your videos I've bought an skx, a vintage 32mm dress watch by Garrone (a vintage Swiss brand) and a g shock. All I have to say is thank you for getting me into this amazing hobby.
Regards, AP
Yep bought it - to replace my only dress watch (gold tissot) which I gave to my son. Lovely deal. Lovely piece. First watch buy after gifting my brother an SK5. All thanks to TGV ! Thank you.
100% agree with you. The same quality Swiss watch will cost about $1.500. The only anther watch to compare is super SEIKO Automatic SARB065 Cocktail Time for range $330 - $360. I just love.
Cheers.
Wal Ada I have the black OS classic and the blue cocktail time. Feel very spoilt. I think I love the OS the most though. There is just something about it
It is a nice traditional well made watch and what most people should be wearing but I would not say it is as good as a $1500 Swiss but it is not that far off.
The sarb065 and the like are nice. I wish for the power reserve ones they didn’t write out “power reserve” it cheapens the watch...
I bought the same watch but with the blue hands and with the bracelet it is absolutely Beautiful. Thank you for making it easy for me to order it. It gets here on Monday, I just can't wait to for it to get here.
I like the version with blue hands better. I paired it with a hirsch blue leather strap and I love it.
Your review of the SARB033 convinced me to order one from a Japanese vendor for $277. Great watch. This review of the Orient Star Classic made me open my wallet again. Ordered from the same vendor for $306. You are right about Long Island. I have ordered Bambinos and Defenders from them. May have to take a break from watching you or else run out of funds. Thanks again for your fine reviews.
+Dale Clark LOL, thank you Dale.
It really pleases me to read this comment.
Enjoy your fantastic choice of watches.
Best regards,
TGV
Came here from Mark's Channel, and must agree. Its very classy and timeless.
Just picked up one on eBay for $275.....it's really a superb watch and looks like it cost multiples of $275. Very classic looking evening/formal watch for men. Every man should have at least one formal watch to wear with suits. etc., and this fits the bill perfectly. Thank you TGV...really love mine!
+Chris Mani Nice! Glad to hear, highly overlooked watch. Enjoy it!
Thanks for sharing,
Best regards,
TGV
+Chris Mani Man you stole it. I paid $355 with shipping. It is awesome.
Just found this watch yesterday and was pretty impressed just bought an orient diver and like it. Got in Long Island Watch. This is on my list for next month. I love my Seiko sarb0065 too much too wear.
Thanks for this video.I'm almost 100% agree with you to keep it. I hope you still have it. A very nice watch. Orient is a realy worthy watch. And that charge hand i think is made for keeping watch snobs quiet.I love it.Cheers!!!!
The next watch for sure. Noted for Xmas wish list. Thanks, great review. Thumbs up!
I get the impression you like this one.
Very right. It's about showing your style without shelling out huge amount of money.
Way to go, TGV!
Jen Polonskay Thank you Jen!
Best regards,
TGV
Watching this has convinced me to pick up a black dial variant. Around USD 320+ though. Thanks, TGV!
Great review. I'm vacillating between the review model and the SS with gold indices and hands and champagne dial.
Great review.
I can never pull the trigger on dress watches, there's always another dive watch to buy!
I put my brother onto the juncken that you recommended, he got the chrono version of the piece you reviewed, he's very happy.
motboy2 haha! Great comment. Glad to hear it worked out.
Best regards,
TGV
I am trying to catch up with all the videos and is really funny to see Tristano struggle with the need of buying a watch he barely know before and funnier trying to find an excuse to keep it. Priceless
Great video and yes hands down an absolutely great value. OS makes some wonderful piece that could be compared to many swiss companies products. Only at a greater value considering in-house movement, fit & finish, customer service along with history...hard to beat.
TGV it's just cool how one can determine how much do you like a piece by counting the "pure class" phrases. This watch though look really good. Pure class! cheers!
Love it. Just purchased this over the Polaris due to the size difference. It’s a bit more understated and versatile also, I think..
Just fitted a green colarab strap to my new bambino and it looks mint, all for £100, love your reviews
perfect review ! Also your passion makes video more enjoyable !
+u erdem Thank you so much! :D
Best regards,
TGV
Hi TGV. I'm with you on this one it's a beauty. I wondered if you could produce a quick 'how to' video demonstrating how to change buckles over on straps. It would be really great to see how you do it and very helpful. Thanks for another fantastic review!
Ben Fearnhead Hi Ben,
Thank you so much. I certainly will do a "how to", excellent idea. Cheers,
Best regards,
TGV
Fantastic! I really look forward to seeing that. Thanks
beautiful watch, vintage style is timeless. thanks for the great review
New subscriber here. Found your channel and really enjoy the detail of the review. I enjoy your passion and excitement when you talk about a timepiece. I really like this model but would love it if it had some lumination.
I've got the EL05003W which is even more stunning with the sunburst blue hands. Absolutely love the peice
Wonderful review.. well done. I am very impressed by the Orient line.. this would be the one I'd want! The only drawback for me is the mineral crystal. Thanks!!
Frank from Boulder, Colorado
Another brilliant video as always TGV! Always a pleasure to view your videos! Look forward to your next viewer email and the review of your latest oris watch!
Best regards,
Ivan
Ivan Wong Hi Ivan, Thank you! Very kind of you to say. Oris review coming soon, I just put it on to wear now funnily enough. I urgently need to do a viewer emails soon too! Cheers,
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry You're very welcome! I'm a very keen follower of yours and I have immense respect for you. I corresponded with you via email a while ago and you replied me which made me over the moon! Just an update on that email I don't intend to get the longines watch anymore as I have my eye on the Tudor North Flag and I'm looking to get it within the next few months hopefully!
Kind regards,
Ivan
hi TGV, great work! I would like to put in a request for your review of one of the fine mechanical pocket watches that Orient are making, Enoch perhaps...
This is my first orient star, bday gift from my daughter after she saw me looking at it. Got the one with the blue hands...now have more than 20 orient stars as I am a one brand collector...love their designs, fit and power reserves...
20? That's crazy.
@@johnv9594 trying to sell a few...but as you may know the price is quite friendly
TVG I have to stop watching your reviews lol once again based on them I added this one to my growing collection. Keep up the great work.
Beautiful watch TGV, love the power reserve feature. Keep it as you said it is an in-house movement so it will be unique to your collection. I may have to get one myself. Just when i thought I was taking a break from watch collecting you brought me back in My poor bank account lol...
Christopher Jennings haha! Sorry Christopher, sorry to say but expect to get further into debt, the watches are just gonna keep coming! ;-)
Thank you, great comment!
Best regards,
TGV
Finally I ordered it today!!!! I am looking forward to get it. I am going to buy a the same strap too.
Congrats, sure you will love it! Enjoy.
Thank you Johny,
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry TGV that's a fantastic watch you should keep it !!!!
I am so glad with all the back to smaller sizes interest, its just so much more elegant!
Good video as usual mate!!!
PS. I reckon your sarb033 is also completely in-house, so technically this would be your second in-house piece, and as some earlier comment pointed out orient star vs sarb033 is bound to be a good video from you!
Johnson Varghese Hi JV,
Excellent comment as always, thank you. So glad you liked it.
I think a duel is going to happen, the audience and highly valued viewers such as yourself have spoken,
so it will have to happen now!
Best regards,
TGV
This model with the blue hands is absolutely stunning, would love to own one someday.
yyyy2999 hear hear! love the blue hands! Thanks for sharing.
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry I just bought the Orient Star Classic with the blue hands, it was an amazing price of $360 cad only. This video definitely influenced me a lot, thanks.
I desperately want a watch with a power reserve. Given how rare they are, I think Orient Star is the only real option.
This watch looks great.
Great review TGV.
have a look at the junkers 6060-2 ;-)
Irnbruist Thanks
One of my reasons why I only collect orient star watches...
I have to admit. Although I'm not generally a big Orient fan.....this is a very smart watch for a VERY good price. I might have to give it some thought! I do appreciate the power reserve which allows you to keep it out of the watch winder until needed and I love that it has the date. Can't seem to keep a watch that doesn't show the date.
Indeed a very nice and classy Orient TGV! Your strap fits the watch perfectly... ;-) excellent video, as usual mate. Best regards
Sharp Chronofighter Thank you SCF!
Highest regards,
TGV
I’ve gone crazy over this (just bought) but it just took me 5 years after this vid!
Six years later…I nominate the Orient Star 70th Anniversary Limited Edition moon-phase, RE(RK)-AY0006A
Extremely limited. Just got mine from the middle of nowhere in Singapore, and it’s abso-farking-lutely gorgeous!
Excellent video, excellent watch. Now I really want one.
Hi tgv,
As always, great review, and as always you are going to cost me money lol. Absolutely agree, its just unbelievable how good this orient and similar brands such as Seiko (sarb for example) are. Really does make you wonder about Swiss prices.....
Kev123G
Hi Kev, lol, thank you! Yeah, it does make one question their pricing, excellent comment, cheers mate.
Best regards,
TGV
And I must say, a few videos back, you recommended a few different RUclips channels. I have gained an unhealthy obsession with '555gear', right up my alley, so thanks for that!
motboy2 LOL, nothing wrong with that. Andrew at 555 is a proper gent, throughly decent chap and his channel is of the highest quality so I don't blame you.
Anyways, you are most welcome, just don't forget about your old mate TGV ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
Haha! Absolutely not sir, this is my favourite channel.
Good answer! ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
Beautiful watch and nice review. I might end up getting one. Also what do you use to store your watches safely? Do you lock it up?
Beautiful watch, Affordable Luxury from a high quality maker! The Japanese really excel in the art of watchmaking.
LONE WOLF Thank you LW. I agree utterly and completely.
I will ALWAYS have a Japanese watch in the collection!
Great comment,
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry Try to purchase the Seiko sdgm 001, Japanese Domestic Model. It is a stunner to behold, especially when you see it in sunlight. Great finish as well.I have one, and i adore it.
Buddy hackett
orient star is the asia rolex
Wow, buy It! I definitely will, you've sold it to me! There are blue handed versions and gold numbered versions, I'm not sure which yet but this will be my first 'proper' watch, thank you!!
You won't regret it. I have a Tudor Classic Date and an Omega Seamaster, and I bought this Orient Star for my brother's 21st birthday and I wish I'd kept it for myself! It really is, in my unbiased opinion, better quality than my Tudor.
this watch in the gold plated version, probably one of the most beautiful watches I have ever seen in my life
That leather green strap looks amazing on watch
Love how you’re almost always using Baroque music in the background!
Very pleasant enthusiasm. I enjoyed the show. Thanks ! :)
Thank you for introducing me to the brand!
merkury06 Your are most welcome. Thanks for the comment,
Best regards,
TGV
I love my Orient "Blue Mako" divers watch. I'll be looking very closely at the "Star" line of Orients for my next dress watch. Great review a always!
Bob Shore Hi Bob, Love the Blue Mako, I am sure you will not be disappointed by the star line.
Thanks for the comment,
Best regards,
TGV
TVG, something you may find of interest. I have a wide assortment of watches from very fine to real beater tool watches. A few weeks ago I bought a very inexpensive Vostok Russian Amphibian divers watch. I was intrigued with its history and did not expect much. I was very pleasantly surprised at its accuracy and power reserve and its 200m depth rating. Had it in the pool daily for lap swimming the last few weeks and it runs great and its now on a nice NATO strap. A real surprise of a "fine" watch. Also has that retro industrial Soviet look from the 60's and 70's.
mine is the rose gold with sapphire crystal with metallic dark blue hands... i am so amazed with my orient star...
I don´t think you got Sapphire but Mineral.
I have one for a couple of months now and I can only agree with your high opinion of the Classic. It has quickly turned into my favourite dress and work watch. Recently I visited the KaDeWe store in Berlin where many of the great Swiss brands have their own department (fantastic to see all those well known but too expensive pieces, go there if you have the opportunity!) and I actually felt proud wearing my Orient Star with it's understated quality. Less is more...
JP Verwaard Hi JPV,
LESS IS INDEED MORE!!! Thank you for taking the time to share this comment, I could not agree with you more. I am dying to visit Berlin, so when I do I will be sure to visit the store you mention. Wear you Star with pride my friend, its PURE CLASS!
Best regards,
TGV
@JP Verwaard do you have the same color as in the video?
@@lolollolol5654 I do
@@DrSpeedNL Cool, very beautiful.
I cant decide between this one and the golden plated one. also the mineral holds me back for a second, not sure if one can find the fitting sapphire and change it. Which movement does your have, the older 40N51 or the newer F6N? How is the timekeeping after years?
The inspiration seems to be the Master line of JLC. Well done.
Very nice watch. Just beautiful lines. If I just didn't purchase a Squale from Long Island, I might be looking into this as well. Lovely watch and this will be another watch to keep in my view down the line.
Mike Nguyen Thanks Mike,
Glad to hear you got the Squale from LIW, that and a Orient Star!!! What more could you possibly need?!?!? :D
Best regards,
TGV
Yep, this will tide me over for quite a while. It'll go well with my current collection, but, I'm still looking at several Oris watches: Big Crown date, the Artelier with the silver dial and blue hands, or the Chronoris.
Take care,
Mike
100% agree about Long Island Watch ... really great to work with.
So glad to hear! Love them.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Hi buddy, love your videos. Thx for the hard work. Is there a new model for that Orient Star Classic? It seems very hard to find in Europe (France). Has it been replaced by a new model? Thanks for ur help! Im looking for my 1st mecanical watch
what do you think about the limited open heart orient star. In another video you mentioned the hollow straps as a con by some of the orient models. I personally do not like that. How did you experience this with the star version.
Keep up the reviews im defnitley gonna subscribe. Watching your unbiased reviews I feel like a watch expert already 😤
The same watch also has a sapphire glass version with Blue dial. Thinking of getting that. One question, does the dome shape at the rear affect the comfort?
Anyways, fantastic review.
I like the idea of personalizing it with a quality band and swapping the buckle. Can someone explain how to do the buckle swap? Thanks TGV, great review!
Have you ever heard of Thomas Earnshaw? This watch reminds me of the Flinders line. Thanks again for your reviews.
Have 4 Orients now. Black Flight, Beige Flight, Mako II USA, Constellation GMT. Everyone is within 0 and +5 sec a day. The fit and finish is as good as some of my higher end watches. Tutima, Sinn, Muhle Glashutte and IWC. No complaint. Amazing quality a great price. If you are not a watch snob, you will be very satisfied with Orient.
Thank you JR, I totally agree, excellent comment.
Best regards,
TGV
I just ordered the blue hands version from Jomashop, $330 on sale!
Hi TGV, Love your work.
Watching your vdos, I bought SARB033 an year back. Completely love it!
But now I want to add another Classic Dress Watch to my collection.
One that is different from SARB033 and need your help.
Orient Star, Alpinist, Hamilton Khaki Field, or any other in the same price bracket.
Thanks.
Writing from 2022, it seems Orient and Orient Star watches still fly somewhat under the radar, outside of collectors. A year ago, I took a Orient Helios into a jewelry store to have the bracelet sized. The Jeweler commented to me that he wasn't familiar with Orient but that it was a beautiful watch. The watch proved too big for my wrist but I was able to sell it online for close to what I paid for it to a new collector. Anyway, Orient Star is still a steal and I have it on my list.
Very beautiful, thanks for the video. Here in Japan, where I live, I see there are two vesions of each color variation of this watch. RK-AF0002S, more expensive, and SAF02004W0. They seem to be the same watch, maybe one is JDM? I can not find it under EL05004W from yout description...
I love this one, it´s really beautiful, very very apealing, no doubt
Recently bought this watch (black dial version) mainly because of your review! In person I am amazed at the quality of finish for the price - even the bracelet it came with is so beautifully brushed and polished. However part of me wishes I should have bought the black dial Tissot Visodate instead - yes it’s more expensive, maybe not quite so exquisitely finished and also the dial is a little too reflective but I think it is a more beautiful and cooler looking watch than the OS and also I would love to have an automatic with a day complication as well as the date.
Update: regulated mine using a timegrapher and now keeping great time! Also liking it more and more each week. It’s just sensational quality. No regrets now.
D Pec Thanks - good to hear from someone that has both. Thinking of getting the visodate nevertheless. Not ‘bonding’ with my OS Classic at all (doesn’t help that it consistently runs 20s fast on the wrist which annoys after me reading so many reviews that boast of absolutely sensational accuracy)
D Pec yeah - it’s luck of the draw with non COSC- cert automatics. Think I was unlucky with my OS. Your OS accuracy is amazing!
Is this watch discontinued? I really want one! Awesome video thanks
Im down to either this or the Timex Marlin and im stumped
I like the marlin for the 34mm size, amazing dial and the classic vintage look
But this, it has an in house movement as opposed to a seagull movement, lovely display case back (which is not that neccessary), and overall build quality that is more refined. But it is 38mm which for my tiny wrist, is still significantly large for a dress watch. I dont even know anymore
Awsome review I think that a review of the blue seiko stargate 2 would be cool it looks like a squale homage maybe a comparison continue the year of the squale lol also maybe the your opinion on best watch for the gym or for the beach as a different segment
Hi TGV. I have discovered your channel a few days ago and thanks to you I have just ordered the Orient Bambino on Longislandwatch website. And I really love the green Venezia strap from Colareb. But I 'm confused. Shall I order the 20mm or 22mm strap? The Bambino has a 21mm lug... I also really love the combination black strap by Wrist Candy! Now you have a new subscriber from France.
Nice review!
Regards from Portugal.
This is my next watch, you totally confirmed what i was thinking, I'm an O.K. judge but no expert so your opinion made me feel confident. What's your opinion on the Retrograde? Oh keep it for sure, if nothing else when you have a more formal event that doesn't require a super safe place, like say a wedding in Africa, could you think of a better watch option?
Hi, great video! I was wondering what length is that strap you had on the Orient Star? They sell two lengths, 195 and 175mm. I have small wrists, so I'm thinking I should get 175mm but wanted to see what you thought since your wrist is small and you have one of the straps on hand. Thank you!
After nearly two years, I must ask, did you keep it? Because, I love the way that looks!
I'm a bit late to the party here, but he mentioned in a newer video that he sold it.
I don't think it was his. It was on loan from long island watch
Wonderful timepiece, I might actually buy one but I can't really decide which one of the five Orient Star Classics I should get. I want it on a brown leather strap and is choosing between the EL05004W and the EL05005S. Any thoughts?
Thank you for leading me to this friend!
Good review, a great watch. Regarding the crystal, this domed crystal watch is styled on vintage watches from times past and is pretty true in many ways, hence no Sapphire. I have a Sinn 356 which has a domed acrylic crystal. A sapphire domed would lack the look this has. My only criticism is that the movement isn't decorated enough for it to feature an exhibition back - a steel engraved back would be more in tune and a better option. The Handwound version WZ0011DD is worth looking at - better looking, nicer made, solid back and handwound.
