5 Things I Love & Hate About The Orient Bambino - Is It Still The Best Dress Watch Under $200?

- Today an old favourite of the channel returns. The Orient Bambino is an affordable entry level automatic dress watch and currently in it's fourth generation. But the question remains, is it still best automatic dress watch under $200? Today I share my 5 things I love and 5 things I hate about the watch and discuss why the 2nd generation is my favourite and the best deal out of the Bambino range.
To buy a Bambino from an authorised dealer I personally recommend, check out Long Island Watch:

I do not use the messaging system on RUclips, Facebook or Instagram, thank you. Хобби
According to the current trend in watches dimensions, I could wear a pineapple on my wrist and stick a hourglass on top of it, and that would still be considered classy! :D
LOL, thank you Luca, well lets see if we can change that ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
I wonder why whatch makers don't just release their dress watches in multiple sizes for each model, e.g. 34mm and 40mm, so that they can suite all wrist sizes. Is it that difficult or impratical?
lol luca, good post
They would have to create an entirely new production line for it.
Luca Simoncini Problem is I have a 7.25-7.5 inch wrist so guys like me can't pull of a 40mm dress watch :/ I opt for 42-43mm max for all watches.
WTF are you doing on RUclips? You should be working high end GQ articles, men's style, Hollywood technical advisor and artwork....Really Sir, you need to make it big time already and I don't know why you have not been discovered yet. Good talent, good language, outstanding style.
you are so right!!! this guy is very good at what he does and very inspiring indeed.
Whilst I understand and agree with what you mean, there is nothing high end in or about GQ!
But then what would happen to us? 😭
Lol!
There is a lot more quality in this content because he doesnt have a company with advertisers pushing for biased reviews, being true to yourself and your passions is sometimes worth more than a few dollars. By the way dont skip the ads while were on the topic of money
Dear Orient , please make a 36mm version with 18mm strap width.
37mm
and 20mm strap. :-)
36mm would be amazing- with an open heart design!
37 mm with 18mm strap and... a sapphire crystal, domed or not. A domed mineral means scratchs guaranteed, too exposed.
You can't allways get what you want.
I want a larger size but they don't make those either.
But they do make the similar "Syphony" model.
I am sure they make a smaller similar model as well.
I've had a Bambino 4 for the past 6 months and absolutely adore it. I find myself looking at it several times a day just to admire it. Yes, it is too big. It needs to go down to 38mm. Yes it is clunky sounding, I thought I broke it the first time I heard the banging around inside the case. Yes, I immediately replaced the original band with a croc strap. The crystal also scratches rather easily, so be careful. But gosh, I have a pretty good eye and mine is simply flawless in detailing and it feels substantial on the wrist. If I had paid $1000 for it, I don't think I would have been disappointed in the least. I like it so much, I am thinking about getting another to keep the first company. Great watch and great review.
That being said, if you were going for a $1000 watch, this probably wouldn’t be your first choice. Maybe not your last, either, but definitely not your first.
I think Orient is a great brand. They have many bold and original designs, and they never do anything unnecessarily expensive. Their quality is not high end, but it's good, and the value you get for the money is very good indeed. And they have one of the most sophisticated logos of all watch brands.
esa062 Clarify plz, ur reasoning
How is Orient not high end...?
My beautiful and amazing Princess they don’t compare to brands like Rolex, Patek or Audemars. Those are considered high end. Orient’s movements are not highly decorated, they aren’t COSC certified and they don’t use rare or precious stones or metals in their designs.
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess because high end is actually a thing that exists in wand orient doesnt check many of those bixes in order to maintain its pricing.
keep it up, your vids are awesome, appreciate the time and passion you put into them, and its fantastic to have someone that's for the "everyman" or rather the more attainable pieces of horology for your average human. Have learnt allot and come to love this hobby with a great passion.
The world needs more gentleman. Cheers TGV.
Thank you so much Shae, very kind of you to say :D
Best regards,
TGV
Love the channel, honest reviews, no paid hack ads. You're the reason I bought two Orients. Thanks Gent!
TGV, I never really paid too much attention to watches until I started watching your channel. Thanks for opening my eyes to such a cool and interesting hobby.
Hi TGV,
The Bambino is still my first recommendation for an affordable and dressier automatic watch. As you said, a 38 mm with 20 mm lugs would be a great move to make it an immortal icon of entry level mechanical watches.
Best regards,
Claus
Your videos are amongst the best out of all the watch channels. Plus you do it with style. I always enjoy your jazz musics and pictures of famous art pieces. Keep up the great work
Firstly TGV, loving your videos and it is refreshing to see a true gentleman online who consistently presents relevant useful information in a respectful and balanced manner. After some research I have settled on an Orient Symphony v.2... the 22mm lugs and flat sapphire crystal at a lower price than the Bambino sold it. I do not wear a dress watch every day or week for that matter. It was not an easy decision by any means because I had to give up the hand winding and hacking.
First time heard about Bambino from your channel last week. A proud owner of Bambino v2 today. Thanks TGV!!
Another review that hits my sweet spot. I adore the Bambino, I think you hit the nail when you use the word charm, it really is almost undefinable.
I'd love to see an Orient Star review!
I just bought a 2nd gen. Bambino. Brand new with the gold case and minute markers. It's on it's way via U.S. Mail. I went back and forth on which gen.to get. Finally decided on the 2nd. I'm so glad on my choice. Especially after watching your love/hate relationship with the Bambino. I always wanted one of these. Thanks for confirming my taste in the many choices of this line by orient.
Better late than never! Just got mine today, first ever automatic/mechanical watch, absolutely loving it.
The Bambino was my first automatic and it really made me fall in love with both Orient and this hobby. Such an incredible watch.
I own a Bambino v2 and reviewed it on my channel. I found mine simply charming and use it regularly. I even get comments on how it looks. Also, timekeeping is very accurate. Superb watch
I love the watch in your profile picture. What is it called if you don't mind me asking?
Just got myself a Gen. 2 Ver. 2 of the Bambino because of this video. It's a lovely piece, thanks for the great review.
Received my Gen 2 Version III last week. I love this beautiful watch. I'm a newbie to watch collecting and my first non-Casio purchase. So excited to rock this.
I've got a Bambino, 2nd generation, with the cream dial, and I love it! Everything you said is pretty much spot-on. The 40mm size is fine by me, but that's just a matter of taste. Even if you are a watch guy and have an amazing collection (my collection probably wouldn't be called "amazing", but I like it!), there are just certain situations when you don't want to wear a multi-thousand dollar watch. For active settings, especially if you might get it wet, a cheap Seiko or G-shock is good; for anything else Bambino is perfect! They're also good high school graduation presents, because they're cheap, but nice enough for any dress type situations a kid is likely to come into, in college, and they're automatic... a nice introduction to better watches, which might spark more interest in horology.
Before I bought my first watch, I've spend few months researching, reading reviews and articles about watch in general. After all this, I decided for Orient Bambino V3 (mainly thanks to your videos). I have them over a year now, and I'm most satisfied. Thanks for the tip. Keep up the great work
Edit1: One thing I "do not like"... They are quite easy to scratch, thanks to the shape and type of glass. On the other hand, I knew this before I bought them , so you can't really count that ;)
I was looking for my first automatic watch and i tend to bambino open heart. After watching some reviews in youtube realised that for the money i can aford it may be the best choice i could do. It is the firtst video of yours that i am watching and i really like it and can tel from the first minutes that you love watches and what you do. Thanks for the video!
I am still very much a beginner watch collector, having only 5 pieces in my collection, but I considering making a Bambino my first real dress watch.
I very much enjoy your videos and look forward to many more.
All the best from Denmark.
Regarding the sound of self-wind mechanism, I personally love it! :)
AlexK I find it charming actually; very "old school"...
WHAT SOUND?
I HAVE A BAMBINO ON MY WRIST RIGHT NOW, CANT LISTEN ANY SOUND.
Dramatic Anticipation mine is completely silent. I feel deprived!
Me to, it sounds obviously mechanical
@@lkkjhtemmexv1838 These are the same people who complain about how "loud" computer fans are.
I bought an Orient Bambino small seconds online from Long Island Watch a couple of weeks ago. I think it's absolutely beautiful - glad I bought it!
Im a big fan of your channel and a its a great inspiration for my watch collection. Today, I bought my first Omega Seamaster 600m Chrono. So proud and exited. Thanks
Watched this yesterday and low behold, Island watches has them sale today. Just ordered the gen2 with the blue hands and cream dial. Your channel helped me with that decision. thanks
I've had the Bambino for many years, its a quality watch. Loved your review which is spot on. Finding a decent 21mm strap is a nightmare, I do have two straps but never really liked them. I'll try my 22mm Colareb on your recommendation. Great review.
You got me interested in watches when I started looking for a watch a few weeks ago. I've watched lots of you and Hugo. I'm really interested in Tissot but they are a little pricey at the moment for me. I decided to bite the bullet and purchased two Orient watches. A Bambino 2nd gen and a blue Kamasu. After buying I found this video and it looks like I've made a wise choice. I didn't know how complicated watches were until I found your channel. Hugo is a star in the making!
I love learning about all the current trends in watch style and fashion, the latest fads, etc., then ignoring all of it. The Urban Gentry channel is my sanctuary.
This was brilliant TGV. Bought one of these because of your videos. So much bang for buck. Would love to see something on the Seiko PADI Diver. Very nice.
I have this exact Bambino. When arrived, it wasn’t working properly. I had my trusty local watch smith doing him a proper cleaning and regulating. So I got a COSC piece for 5 years now. Meanwhile, I’ve put it in a shell cordovan strap. This watch is, as the movie says, something you can’t explain. The charm, the charisma. It’s outstanding and it grabs lots of complements. It’s an eye catcher !!! It has a certain vintage Omega/Longines look. It’s lovely !
Nice video TGV. As always, very detailed, lots of interesting info. Have been learning a lot about watches in this channel.
Orient probably has the best logo of any manufacturer. Something super classy about it. Great video, TGV!
I am a Bambino owner, first generation, yellow gold case with a white face. It is absolutely beautiful......a keeper......
Thanks for keeping the Orient Bambino on the radar screen.....
and let's keep their diver watches in mind, like the Ray Raven, or the MAKO's.....
I recently bought the Orient Bambino V2 2nd Generation with a cream dial. I love it so much! Even though I already own a black dial bambino V3, I couldn't help myself... these watches are spectacular!
I'm not sure what it is, but something about that grey dial with rough, almost khaki leather strap at 7:57 really jumps out to me. Really very handsome. And of course, an excellent video once again from TGV.
Cheers!
Hi TGV, Thank you for the recommendation, I purchased an Orient Bambino to add to my watch rotation and It's fantastic, cheers.
I just ordered one last night online, 2 generation Roman numerals, with the classic yellowish white with the blue hands. I’m very excited to get it . And to add since I’ve been watching your videos I seldom comment but now I’m on my 4th watch in a year ( all I wore was a G-Shock ) thanks for the reviews and keep up the good work you do. Cheers !!
Jspecwerks hey how do you like it ?
DriftCrazy 14 love it , the quality it exquisite I’m going to buy another one and give it to my wife. Worth every penny
Calm down with the shopping spree man! Enjoy your watches!
So after 2 years... how is it holding up?
Abraham Nunez my ex wife took it ( she liked it more than me )
Thanks for making this video and showing the pros and cons of the Orient Bambino. I'm saving to get one for myself.
Apparently there's only two generations, but 4 versions. Gen 1 have "water resist" on the face and don't have hacking and winding, gen 2 have "water resistant" on the face and have hacking and winding.
That inexplicable quality; that’s what makes this watch so special.
I just got a Black Symphony from Mark. I am in love with It. Next will be a golden Bambino for sure! I saw the watch on Roy Scheider on Jaws and looks a lot like It. Good choice for a vídeo TGV. cheers
It's my first mechanical automatic wrist watch so I don't have any basis to establish particular affinities or disdains for it yet, but the strap is undeniably uncomfortable. I ordered a replacement from Martu Leather in Chile, in part because they can cut it to 21mm with ease. Thanks for plugging Long Island Watch. No complications whatsoever, and incredible price point. Loving the Bambino 2nd generation so far. White dial and blue hands look fantastic. Love your channel!
You have a great Channel ..now I found my self watching 2 hours of watches reviews a day! You are missing on your desk a Stuka airplane, a Luger or Mauser Broomhandle pistol ..
The black and silver version 2 will probably be my next watch, looks absolutely gorgeous!
Excellent choice.
I hope you go for it, enjoy.
Best regards,
TGV
i actually got my bf a 2nd gen bambino for christmas this past holiday 😆 he ended up changing the strap. i never realized why until you pointed it out.
Just bought my first Bambino (Gen 6) as inspired by this video! Thanks T.U.G.! 😉
You just cant stop smiling through out the video because the watch is so amazing :)
I’m a subscriber but I don’t usually watch your whole videos because I find them too long , BUT this is one of my favorite watches so I watched the whole thing 😎
The way you present is so charming. Your accent and wordings are so well put together. You should be way more than a youtuber. Respect sir! Going to pick up that Bambino but I would go for the V3 because I love the minimalistic look. Awesome review. Very informative. Unlike those fashion youtuber who just keeps pushing products that do not work. The Movement watch is one horrible example.
Great review thank you.You have now turned me firmly on to Nato & Zulu straps - cheers! Nice to see your excellent channel is now heading inexorably towards 100k subscribers.atb, snack
Just broke down and bought my first one and I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival from Long island Watch. Version 2, series 3 with the gray dial. i know I'm late to this video but have been enjoying the channel.
BradD how do you like it
Great review! I was thinking of getting one but needed to know more about it and now I do.
I'm very late to the party here but with many boxes checked in my collection I am finally giving a serious look in purchasing an Orient after admiring them for years. The Bambino V2 with the cream dial is hard to turn my eyes away.
I've had my Bambino V2 gen2 for over one week and I agree with all of your points. Absolutely love the cream dial with all of the indices and roman numerals and blue hands. I've had Seiko 5's for the longest time so I'm used to loud winding and that doesn't bother me. My Bambino gains 5 seconds a day, not too bad. People say the 40mm case wears small but it still feels big on my 6.5" wrist. I really wish it was 38mm. The strap is too big and clumsy looking and sometimes feels scratchy on my wrist. I wish it was 20mm and tapered. In the end I still love this piece for what it is and will proudly wear it.
Love you channel one of the best reviewers on youtube
Just liked and finally subbed after countless vids I’ve watched. Best watch reviewer on RUclips. Pure class and honesty. Honorable. One thing.... please post song titles in description. I enjoy the music taste but can’t find the songs.
I just bought one yesterday off of Long Island looking forward to its arrival as always fantastic video
So glad to hear, I am sure you will love it.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Most of these videos that talk about love & hate all have some bs pseduo arguments in the hate category. All yours are legitimate and insightful. Subscribed!
Marc always says it as it is, and very happy with my Bambino! The strap is pretty crap and stiff, but can change it out.
Great video TGV, the Bambino looks great.
TGU, Great presentation, as always. I don't buy a watch without checking with your channel 1st. Carry on!
Great review! I agree! The fit and finish are really outstanding!
Just got my rose gold V2G2 today. The quality and look are amazing!
I have one of these. (Gen 2, Version 1. The 60s-style one with the indices.) Absolutely beautiful in person. The only dislike I have is the band. I swapped it out for a Hirsch croc band, which is available in every size from 18-22, including 19 and 21! Looks great on the Hirsch.
Thanks TGV for the honest video! TBH, I was considering this watch and though all 5 positives were things that charmed me, some of the "loathes" I think would really start to bother me. Thanks always! Keep them coming!
Glad I could help, Thank you for the comment Dave, always appreciated.
Best regards,
TGV
First ever comment on your channel. I needed a dress watch and purchased the bambino gen 2 ver 1 based on your recommendation as I know very little about watches. I love the retro look and the watch just has something special about it. the 40mm is a perfect size for me since I have large wrists. I did have to get a new xlong leather band for it. thank you for your expertise and help.
looking for my first watch and your channel helped a ton
I just bought the exact watch you are demonstrating. I love the dial. I think I may have bigger wrists than you do because it doesn't look that big on me. Best thing is i got it for $125 with free shipping so if something bad happens to it I'm not going to be upset.
I love this watch !!! The one with the grey dial is absolutely gorgeous ;) Its always a pleasure seeing your videos Tristano ;)
Thank you Rafael, always glad to hear from you.
Best regards,
TGV
I always wanted one but they were always priced at $180-200 and since one of the viewers told me they were on sale , i jumped on it and got a creme dial with blue hands! Patience always pays in the end :)
Just got my Bambino Version 4 with the Rose gold plated with the Chocolate Brown dial. Absolutley beautiful watch.
I currently own a Bambino V3 with the blue dial. I didn't like the stock leather strap either so I put it on a nice matte brown alligator strap right away, which considerably improved its already stunning looks in my opinion. On top of that, now I can wear it with casual clothing as well.
I have a big wrist so the size wasn't an issue for me, although I must say I'd prefer that its rotor wasn't so loud. You not only can hear it, but also feel it move when it's on your wrist. That's maybe the only "con" I can think of, otherwise it's hard to beat this beauty at it's price range.
Nice video as always TGV, keep up the good content!
Wearing my Bambino while watching this video! :)) I have the second generation with the rose gold Roman numerals and I never tire of looking at the dial. I put a 20mm leather strap on it and thankfully the gap between the lugs doesn't show too much. The noisy rotor and the size bother me the most, but this watch has also seen me through a lot of important events. Can't let it go for now. Great video as always, TGV!
Another great video Tristano! Great to see that you appreciate Orient as much as I do, and that you appreciate so many brands and their history and legacy, you have a true passion for watches
One of my favorite Orient watches is the 70's multi year calendar, it's one of the most unique watches I know and it's also very elegant, an in house movement perpetual calendar for under $100 dollars! I suggest you to take a look at it and see if you like =)
Nice video, and I certainly feel the charm. I can't criticise the accuracy of my 5th gen Bambino, which is always under +8 seconds a day and really easy to set a minute slow each month and then just forget.
I confess I love the loud sound while it is winding.
still loving your videos! Recently joined your FB group as well.
I love the IIII on the dial. Nice touch of symmetry instead of using IV.
I have the tan dial w/ roman numerals 2nd gen and love it. One of the best compliment per dollar values out there!
Thanks. Great review, I wanted to purchase that watch for some time but after I saw how it behaves on your wrist I decided it would not fit mine at all. You are completely right that dress watches should be just a bit smaller.
If it has 38-39mm diameter, i will not think twice to purchase this classic look timepiece
Great review! I love my Bambino with the cream dial and blue hands. A few points: 1) I agree with you regarding the strap quality and odd lug width 2) Despite being 40mm, and a "vintage" dress watch, I think it still looks great on my 6 3/4" wrist 3) I get what you're saying about the rotor noise, but I don't regard that as something that cheapens the watch. I have a Breitling with a Valjoux 7750 that's pretty noisy too 4) Long Island watch is great!
Great video! I will buy it one day
My 2nd generation version 2 with the cream face and blue hands was just delivered. I am thrilled, a very classy looking watch. I know it will be a favorite. I agree with you that it really is the best value for a sub $200 dollar watch. I had resisted buying one as I love my divers and aviators but I finally had to have it. I like the look of the strap but it is a little too stiff. I’ll see how it goes before I change it.
excellent video. I own the second generation ' mad men' version, and it reminds me of the watches my father used to wear at that time. It is big, but that makes it more or less unique, and for someone looking for a dress watch it offers real value for money. The strap is a laugh, but it can be replaced easily. Very happy with my smart baby boy.
Thank you Henk for sharing that, great comment and keep enjoying it!
Best regards,
TGV
Orient Bambino is a great wee watch, I have a v1 in black which I wear on a navy blue nato strap and it looks awesome. Sometimes I put it on a red, green and black NATO to wear it casual (saw it on Worn & Wound and thought it looked great).
I returned a faulty SKX and with the money I was able to buy a Bambino AND a Blue Ray and still have about $15 left.
I really like the Orient logo, looks so classy 💛
I got the Bambino 2'nd gen from Japan thee weeks ago and it's the JDM model SAC00008W0,
I fall in love with it the first-time I saw it,
Mine runs 3 seconds slow per day but it's well within the stated accuracy.
Thanks for the reviews, Your channel is my favorite.
Thank you so much, I deeply appreciate that.
Enjoy the Bambino!!!
Best regards,
TGV
Hallo TGV ! You were very good already then - 7 years ago ! I hope you will keep on making videos the next many years because we watch byers love you ❤️
I have an Orient Sun and Moon 2 and it's incredible. I also bought a Citizen automatic for $109 from LI Watch and it makes a lot of noise winding. But I actually grown quite fond it that. My Omega is smooth, but there's something charming about the noise it makes. At the end of the day, it's an automatic and there is an distinct element of craftsmanship that is simply not found in an Apple Watch. I love hearing it
i don't know if your Clark Gable mustache gets enough shout outs, but here is one. you've really got the head and haircut for it.
thanks for the watch reviews, cheers
Since I was home from February 4th on a work injury, I had a chance to do spring cleaning. I found boxes of watches my late wife, who passed away in 08 at age 39. I found a Tag Huer, Timex Expedition indigo with a tan leather strap with the numbers 24 instead of 12. I found a gold watch , a Eversteel, a few Fossil watches and I bought a 12 place watch box I filled. Since I had time to look up RUclips videos, I guess I can call myself a watch collector . I personally bought 3 Diesel watches, a Mr Daddy 2.0 black/gold , Mega Chief, and a Rasp . I also have a Casio edifice efv-530d I bought on Amazon because I liked the way it looked and Yesterday ordered a Bambino Blue, black leather band Ver4 after watching your vlogs. I am really getting into checking out the different style of watches. I have wide wrists and big hands for a average size guy so I love the 41-50 mm sizes. I just subscribed and love your content. I am from South Carolina USA, but love the UK styles
I own the first gen Bambino. I agree with all of your points.
Looking forward to your "State of the Collection" TGV.
I just absolutely love this watch. Want!
Great vid, I bought the v4 bambino with grey dial, rose gold hands and brown suede strap with stainless steel case, it's a beautiful watch which doesn't get much wrist time as I rarely wear a suit but I think you are right about the size it's just that couple of mms too big.
I'm a happy Bambino owner, I put a Speidel Twistoflex on mine to get the 60's vibe, the Twistoflex spring adjusts so the lugs can be anywhere from 18 to 24
Got this for my wedding. Awesome dresswatch and everyday beater :)) strap could be better im thinking of getting new one. Your taste in watches resembles mine. Definetly following this channel :)) cheers
