    Coin restoration is a captivating blend of science, artistry, and historical preservation. From ancient relics to modern mintings, coins bear witness to the passage of time, each carrying a unique tale of commerce, culture, and conquest. However, years of circulation and exposure to the elements can obscure their beauty, leaving them tarnished and worn. Enter the world of coin restoration, where skilled artisans breathe new life into these venerable artifacts, meticulously cleaning, repairing, and preserving them for future generations to admire.
    Understanding Coin Restoration:
    At its core, coin restoration is about more than just cleaning; it’s a nuanced process that requires a deep understanding of numismatics, metallurgy, and conservation. Before any restoration work begins, a thorough examination of the coin’s condition is conducted, noting areas of corrosion, dirt accumulation, scratches, and other imperfections.
    Cleaning Techniques:
    The initial step in coin restoration often involves gentle cleaning to remove surface dirt and grime. Dry brushing with soft bristle brushes or using compressed air can effectively dislodge loose debris without causing harm to the coin’s surface. For more stubborn stains or corrosion, mild soaking solutions or ultrasonic baths may be employed, carefully monitored to ensure they do not damage the coin’s patina or details.
    Repairing Damage:
    Beyond cleaning, coin restoration may involve repairing minor damage such as scratches, dents, or edge imperfections. Skilled artisans use specialized tools and techniques to meticulously reshape and smooth damaged areas, striving to maintain the coin’s original appearance while minimizing any alterations.
    Preservation Methods:
    Preserving the restored coin’s condition is paramount to its long-term integrity. Conservation treatments such as applying protective coatings or storing the coin in inert environments help safeguard against future deterioration. However, it’s essential to strike a balance between preservation and overprotection, ensuring that the coin remains accessible for study and appreciation.
    Advanced Restoration Techniques:
    In cases where coins exhibit severe corrosion or damage, advanced restoration techniques may be employed. Electrolysis, for example, uses controlled electric currents to remove corrosion from the coin’s surface, revealing its underlying metal. While effective, such methods require careful supervision to prevent unintended damage or alteration.
    Ethical Considerations:
    Ethics play a crucial role in coin restoration, guiding practitioners to respect the historical integrity of each artifact. Restorers must adhere to professional standards and guidelines, avoiding overzealous interventions that may compromise the coin’s authenticity or historical significance.
    The Rewards of Restoration:
    While coin restoration is undoubtedly labor-intensive, the rewards are immeasurable. Restorers have the privilege of uncovering hidden beauty, revealing intricate details and designs that have been obscured by time. Moreover, they play a vital role in preserving our cultural heritage, ensuring that these tangible links to the past remain intact for future generations to appreciate and study.
    Conclusion:
    Coin restoration is a labor of love, requiring a delicate balance of skill, knowledge, and reverence for history. Through careful cleaning, repair, and preservation, artisans breathe new life into coins, allowing their stories to shine once more. As custodians of these precious artifacts, we have the responsibility to treat them with care and respect, preserving their beauty and historical significance for generations to come

    I’m fascinated by “varieties” and who would pay the premium for such things. I’m missing one coin in my 1909 - 2009 Lincoln set, and I’m much more likely to upgrade a 1937d or a 16s rather than collect coins with doubling and die chips, cracks etc. I do not have the double ‘55, nor will I ever, and more than I’ll never have the 3 legged buffalo. (I’m not in that tax bracket). I can’t wait to see what happens with your coins at grading. You’re not buying the scratched and worn junk I’m buying. Best Regards, and keep the videos coming; great stuff!

      That Morgan looks like it was cleaned in the fields but it doesn’t go through the devices. Except for a very small area on the cheek. I live in NZ, so buying raw coins to send off for grading is just too expensive.
      Sending my raw 2021 D Morgan for grading, only for it to come back MS69 would be pointless. I can already sell it for a nice profit right now if I want.
      And, yes, I also have a 2021 D Morgan NGC MS70 FDI.
      I view my new hobby as collecting art in the form of coins and, as such, I do enjoy the hunt. This is on top of my basic stack.

    I have seen people use their restoration service before with a hazy proof that was straight out the packaging and then got it back as details for being cleaned so beware of that possibility. I would be absolutely furious if it happened to me especially on a cameo benji proof from the early 50s. I dont want you to be afraid to use it but I have seen it happen before and that is a rotten thing for them to do. Think they made a mistake cleaning it then docked the sender for it so please beware

      Yeah I sent this in in two separate orders. I got one back and I’m not happy at all. I’m waiting to get the rest back to make the video. PCGS has been so bad in the last several orders. Some people have said to send the coins in in the proof wraps so they know it’s out of a proof set but for me, I can’t tell how nice the coins are until they’re out. The cello makes it too hard.

      @@wisconsincrhunter5614 the 1950 Franklin grade was what I thought but they didn’t even give it cameo. And the true view pic they took was done in a way to make it look like the reverse had no cameo. It looks so much better in person. Part of me feels like they don’t want to grade them too good or it will dilute the value. I’ve taken pics of coins, my wife is a photographer, they are adjusting the pics to look worse than it really is. I knew DCAM was a long shot but it’s definitely a cameo. That one will be sent to ANACS as well. If they don’t think it’s cameo then fine, I’m wrong but man…. It’s the most cameo looking coin I have. Other than modern proofs.

    • @wisconsincrhunter5614
      @wisconsincrhunter5614 Год назад

      @@rockysramblings yeah that 52 is a STUNNER, for sure that thing is cameo, there can be no doubt. All devices are frosty as hell. And I think the same you do, they dont wish to dilute the population and lower the value of all the others. The person that graded it probably has one in their collection and said nope, not screwing up my resale price on mine. I also think they lowball other coins to do the same thing, they want fewer high grade specimens available in the market. If I was in your shoes I'd be so done with pcgs, it just seems like they're quickly becoming scammers, overpriced scammers at that. Ngc or anacs is the way to go. I've seen this guy who's youtube name is Dr. G and he had some amazing cameo proof benjis in NGC holders and he cracked em out and resubmitted to pcgs and lost the cameo on a few of them and he resubmitted them several times and hes never gotten the designation back on it, got super screwed by them

    • @rockysramblings
      @rockysramblings  Год назад

      @@wisconsincrhunter5614 that sucks! What also sucks for me is I joined PCGS over a year ago and started my registry. I really liked that idea but now with this I’m just shocked. I still have my 8 free submissions this year. I was considering letting my subscribers pick some of them and see how it goes. Other than that I have one submission I’m waiting to get back. I really think I’ll go with ANACS and see how that goes. A lot of these submissions are for fun and with my channel and all I figured I’d share. I know I’m no professional but these mistakes are just ridiculous. I can’t be paying premium and accept this. I’ll go ANACS and if I get some I want in my registry I’ll resubmit them to PCGS. Hopefully PCGS would accept them as is. But there is a line you can click that if they don’t meet a certain grade and designation then they won’t reholder them. That ‘52 benji went from “received” to “shipped” in 3 days! Another rush job. Im so pissed lol.
