  • 09.14.2021 | 4:24 PM | NATIONAL CITY - A large tower above a commercial business center caught fire for unknown reasons. It was the elevator shaft that caught fire. A 2nd alarm was called due to the danger of the fire spreading and the height of the actual fire, making access difficult. There are no reported injuries. The Fire is under investigation. The Firefighters were waiting for an elevator contractor to come and open the elevator to see if anyone is inside. East 8th St was closed at Plaza Blvd down to Harbinson Ave while the incident was active.

That's the water being used to fight the fire from the bottom. It is also knocking burnt pieces of building loose and launching them upwards.

whoooooooooo would ever think of an elevator shaft as being flammable !!

Hydraulic fluid can be quite flammable, and with this likely being a hydraulic elevator, a possible combination of heat, electrical and hydraulic fluid must’ve reacted in the elevator shaft to generate a fire of this magnitude. This elevator was more than likely replaced after the fire and better safeguards put in place to prevent something like this from happening again

Curious to know what's burning. Those are usually concrete walled with all metal equipment.

With a 100 amp 240 volt motor with 4 belt's; I'm surprised that there's no fire sprinkler above it. I've seen the breaker trip due to heat from constant use. Maybe the breaker caught fire.
