As with any language, talk to locals. In fact, Chinese is not as difficult as imagined. Learning 1000 words and several common phrases can basically be used for a lifetime. It's just that the grammar and the alphabet are different, so It will make people feel difficult.
I was in Ivory coast for four years, my first one year I find it difficult to interact with the ivorians because of language barrier. My second year I began to speak French little bit, even though my French wasn't good. By the time I was three years in country I began to speak French clearly. In life we've to interact with people. It's good to speak other languages. The video is very amazing.
