  • Do you like Race cars?
Jim Hall is the "Father of Aerodynamics" when it comes to race-cars.
Come along for the ride with me as we check out Jim Hall's Chaparrals at the Petroleum Museum in Midland, TX.
Keith Douset - the Petroleum Museum's resident Chaparral expert - takes us through all the cars.
    Starting with the 1964 Corvette GS-II B.
You'll get to see it completely naked - with no body panels.
And you'll get to see THE torque-converter.
That's right - THE Torque Converter.
    That's the Super-Secret-Skunk-Werks-Stuff baby!!
Keith takes us through all the cars up to the 1980 Indy 500 winning Chaparral 2K Indy Car.
I think it's a fascinating history of the Father of Aerodynamics and how the series that that was built on "no-rules" killed itself with rules...
After all the race-cars, we're allowed to stop by Chaparral headquarters & Rattlesnake Raceway.

The single greatest auto video I’ve ever seen! 46 minutes seemed like 15. The amount of knowledge shared is extraordinary and the enthusiasm is present throughout the video. Superior presentation, with all the credit to Jim Hall’s mechanic for providing new information, enjoyable commentary, and a look at a legendary race car creator! Thank you!

Your best video yet; I loved the details the man who gave you your tour provided. My only criticism of the video is that you DID NOT introduce the man who gave you the tour - when you should have introduced HIm and his credentials, (and probably should have PAID him too! ).. :) (Makes my own note to visit Midland and this museum)...

Thanks so much Gary!! Maybe you missed it - I put Keith's name & title on a scroll at the bottom of the screen. He's Keith Douset - the Chaparral curator at the Petroleum Museum. And... How do you know I didn't pay him??? Thanks again for watching!!

As someone who shows mad appreciation for Jim Hall and his Chaparrals, it's hard to argue that his most famous and legendary creation was the 2J fan car. It might've not looked the nicest but it left an impression on the car world so much so that it gets mentioned in topics more that 50 years later. It's quite fascinating to learn about his other designs as well.

@@jeffthisted The Brabham BT46B was the 2nd fan car but it was built 8 years after the 2J. Plus it was an F1 car whereas the Chaparral is obviously a Can-Am car.

I had the Cox 2D 1/24th here in Australia in about 1968. It was my most prized possession, with its cast magnesium chassis, wire look cast rims and detailed bodywork. A real gem that I lost along the way.

I watched the 2F win the 1967 Brands Hatch race. The first race I ever went to. I had been following the CanAm series and had a Cox Chaparral slot car. Apart from the wing, it was the sound of the 2F which was most distinctive amongst the rest of the entries. That big block just boomed, whereas the Ferrari P4 - surely the most beautiful race car ever built- just screamed and the Porsches barked. You could see the wing inclination change as the car exited Clearways onto the top straight. Also, apart from Jim Clark, just about every top driver was taking part. Sid Taylor had entered a Lola 3 coupe in the race and, many years later, a colleague bought and raced that very car.
