  • In this video, I show my struggles as an amateur machinist. I had so many problems, yet was able to fix them and learn. This is another Andrew Camarata-style take on machine maintenance.

First machine I ever ran was a Southbend 12" you got a nice one, taper attachments great to have. Fing an Aloris style tool holder you will love it. I started in 1971 retired in 2012 now I make parts in a 10" heavy.

Despite being the only lathe I have ever really run, I really do like it. I really like the "clutch" to engage the power feed rather than the on and off levers that you find most often. I personally have not cut tapers with the taper attachment yet. This particular machine came off of a navy ship and has definitely been used over the years. We are currently looking into replacing the headstock bearing as it is starting to chatter and making it hard to get a good finish. We have talked about an Aloris-style tool holder but the degradation of that headstock is keeping us from putting too much into it. Especially with the lack of work to do locally. I really appreciate the comment and the view.
