This is hands down the best dyi tutorial I've seen far f30 spring install so far. Simple, straight to the point, no sidetracking, no opinions. Just tech talk.
I finally installed the H&R Sport Springs with Bilstein B8's on all 4-corners of my 335. Absolutely unequivocally brilliant result. Costs a few bucks up here in Canada but so worth the time and investment. I was a bit worried after your anti run-flat post. I put standard Pilot Sport A/S3's on the car and like I said ...
The ride is slightly stiffer than stock but not a problem at all when driving around. My wife said "very smooth" today, so I think we have a verdict. Expansion joints on one of our older bridges sharply remind me that I have a Sport suspension though. In general I think the 225/45ZR18's buffer a certain amount of road texture. Two really noticeable things are the drop in ride height and the swift immediacy of steering input. This is what a 3-series should feel like.
Just to let you know. The process works exactly the same on a F36 the only difference is that the torx on the rear axle is bigger, you need a different key
Thanks alot Kies Motorsports! Just lowered my f30 with KW springs with your DIY. But without the power tools it requires lots of strength but it worked. My f30 with 19 inch bbs lm looks much better now.
Thanks for the great instructional video. In the future, it may be nice to list the tools needed in the description. I'll be using this guide soon, thanks.
Hey quick question here, If you feel like the rear height is too high of your H&R Sport lowering springs, is it possible to put some BC coilovers weight ajuster on top of the spring to manually lower the rear by yourself with coilovers ranch?
Just completed this job today with AC Schnitzer springs. Just to help. we noticed that the drive shaft can sometimes pop out when the front strut assembly is taken out. This makes it really difficult to put the new strut assembly back in. Make sure that the drive shaft is fully engaged when strut goes back in . Also some of the bolt sizes and numbers may vary between models. I was working on 435d EU spec. Otherwise a great video. Many thanks.
Thanks again for the video; it provided a great guide for me to install H&Rs springs on my F30 this past weekend. The only trouble I ran into was the alignment of the rear control arm to the brake hub assembly. I simply could not get the pivot point perfectly aligned so a mechanic friend successfully did it for me. Do you have any videos on DPs or upgrades for the FMIC?
Your video was helpful 👍🏽 Same setup here, but with the stock shock absorbers when i hit a hole in the road the absorber hits it self from being shortened and make a big boooom ... So i ordered the Bilstein B8 for front axel today ;)
Been needing this answer back, about to order brand new struts + mounts. How’s the ride? I have m package + 19’ , would like to hear the feedback on the bilstein
I always find that last large 21mm bolt on the rear lower wishbone the most difficult to get in as the knuckle bushing never aligns straight to get the bolt through. I noticed that you jacked up the wishbone under the spring. I'll give that a try next time.
So what are the torque settings for the rear 2 bolts that connect the hub and the rear damper, The torque specs for the front collar bolt and top mount bolts. If you don't mind me asking
Hi Brian, it's very enjoyable to watch your DIY. I am working on the same project for my roommate's F30 335i. Do you know the torque specs for those bolts? I did some research showing that: everything looks OK but the three 16mm bolts which are only 28NM. The tightening specs look too low. If you know what exact torque spec, please let me know. Thanks! Strut to strut mount nut: 16mm bolt 44NM nut 32.5ft/lb Strut mount to vehicle body: 3X16mm bolts 28NM 27.7ft/lb Strut assembly to steering knuckle: 18mm bolt + 16mm nut 100NM 74 ft/lb Suspension brace: E18 bolt 56NM 41ft/lb Sway bar link to strut assembly: 16mm nut 56NM 41ft/lb
after owning an e46 and an e92 now onto a f30 all things just get more complicated. I am cursing at my screen just watching you do the front end of this haha. thanks for the videos man! ps. love your car, i have a f30 14 328i xdrive sportline and i'm doing that front lip and vinyl wrap the back of the sportline from your videos!
I want to lower my bmw but heard that its bad to mess with the x drive setup? Has anyone run lowering springs on an x drive and what’s your experience with longevity and reliability with shocks etc...
I just did this to my car, great video by the way. Exact same springs. Did you have any issues with your axles at all? How did your suspension hold up? I’m just bracing myself for all the issues that may arise lol
Hey Brian! I just finished mine. And I got a traction control light and an abs and now a check engine light. Have you heard of this problem happening. It’s a 2015 328i xdrive
Brilliant video! What would make it priceless is if you could include the torque settings for each nut/bolt. That information is very difficult to find for some.
Any suspension mods definitely needs an alignment check asap. I myself bought super sports for my F30 vs. the H&R sport springs in the video and if you’re especially doing a diy install, it’s highly recommended.
Great video. I replaced my springs on my f30 today using this video...just had some knocking on the front driver side after installing them, I'm tightening bolts tomorrow to make sure everything is good. I didn't use the BMW torque specs for any of the bolts I removed.
Did mine yesterday and experienced the same knocking sound coming from the exact same side. Retightened every bolt last night and made sure everything is where its supposed to be. Still hearing it today. Were you able to get rid of the noise?
Great video man!! I was wondering if I lower the front suspension of my F15 BMW 2014 would the rear suspension follow the front by itself since it's self leveling?
I had to replace the entire roll over strut arm (you one you removed 2 bolts from), the final bolt removed was by the subframe. I cannot realign the knuckle arm bolt which was a skipped scene here, the jack goes from being by the knuckle to under the spring. Any suggestions?
BMW F30 Rear Shock Mount Bolts = 28Nm or 20.7 lb-ft of torque BMW F30 Lower Rear Shock Bolt = 100Nm or 73.7 lb-ft of torque BMW F30 Rear Knuckle Bolt = 100Nm or 73.7 lb-ft of torque BMW F30 Front Knuckle Pinch Bolt = 44Nm or 32.5 lb-ft of torque, plus 90° BMW F30 Thrust Arm Mounting Bolt = 100Nm or 73.7 lb-ft of torque BMW F30 Control Arm Mounting Bolt = 100Nm or 73.7 lb-ft of torque BMW F30 Lug Bolts = 119Nm or 88 lb-ft of torque
cant you just leave the front shocks hanging in and undo the top bolt from there, unbolt the top of the spring and insert new spring and compress the spring by jacking up the assebmbly?
I am installing B 14 Bill Steen coil overs on anF 30 X Dr. and I want to know if it’s OK to reuse the original bump stop. In the rear. The certificate that comes with the kit says to reuse it but it seems a little bit long. What are your thoughts? Sorry I’m text speech iso the words are a little funny. The certificate that comes
Where did you get that spring compression tool you used for the front? The one you used looks very safe with the c clamps, there is no way for the spring to slip. Do you have a link? Also does X-drive, or the ability to switch suspension modes effect this job at all? Thanks.
Liked all your videos very helpful. Need help n hard to find answers F32 xdrive with adaptive m suspension can I use h&r springs or what would u recommend Any comments would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Sorry, I didn't answer the second part of your question. I think 6 hours has some buffer built into it, so I wouldn't say it's out of the question, but if they are using air tools with a lift, it should be quicker, based on how long it took me to do mine. Just curious, how much are they quoting you?
They look like "Outlaw Anarchist" replica wheels of BMW's original E46 wheels "Styling 163", because they're missing the BMW writing next to the m logo. All other numbers on the outside are perfect fakes...
So much easier if you leave the front strut attached to the tower, and just push the knuckle down. Instead of trying to pull the strut out of the knuckle.
Work smarter! I like it! I'm assuming if you have enough ground clearance to pull the springs down under. Is the removal/installation similar to a 2014 X3 xdrive35i Msport? Newb DIY'r asking? I bought a set of H&R and I'm debating to take it in to my mechanic for $600(quoted high as $1000) vs DIY.
I have a question. Rear coil springs look the same only less coils on upgraded ones so why not just cut off few coils and use stock coil springs? It would reduce load capacity but other than that should be fine and way less expensive.
It’s not e34 easy, where you can remove the sway bar end links, unbolt the strut rod, and drop the suspension so far the spring unloads and the strut pivots out for easy spring removal, but it is no hard than my e46 either.
Hey Brian I recently lowered my 2016 320i with H&R super sport springs and I've recently started noticing some clunking noises whenever I go over a bump, big or small. Double and triple checked everything and nothings loose and everything seems to be holding up. What would you think is causing the clunking noises? I've had a few people tell me it might be my top hats but that doesn't make sense to me as the car is basically new still.
I'm experiencing this too Brian and Rik. Installed the same springs on my 2013 F30 and now I hear a hollow knocking sound on the front left. Retightened all bolts and made sure everything is where they're supposed to be. I notice mine occurs when the shock drops on an uneven road surface, not upon engaging/approaching a taller bump on the road.
Hey man, can you do me a favor of measuring the outer diameter and length of the front and rear springs? My car is a really old car and there is NOTHING in the market for my car. I've measured its OD and length of front and rear springs and I found on some UK retail website that the H&R purple sport spring for bmw f30's measurements come close to the springs I'm currently using. I just want to confirm with you if that website is legit. If you decided to help me you'll be doing me a solid here. Thanks in advance man, cool channel.
Almost all houses in a middle class area in the US are like this lol. We have the advantage of a very low cost of living and lots of area compared to Europe
I have to agree with the H&R making the ride awful on an XDrive, I have them installed on my F32 XDrive and looking for another alternative. The look is amazing but any bump on the road will make you cringe! Would love to hear what anyone out there has done to rectify this issue........

Ha! What a blast from the past. This showed up as a recommended video on youtube. Look how far Brians has come. Congrats!!!
This guy always has the best camera angles and best explanations. It’s deceiving because he makes everything look super easy 😂

Really nice to see where you started this channel. congratz on learning so much and growing your channel :)
Thank you for this video. My grandfather and I lowered my f30 on k&n sports in only 3.5 hrs. Quicker than I honestly expected
Awesome job!
Kies Motorsports one last thing, are ur m wheels 18s or 19s? Thanks!
will be DIY'ing very soon. Any chance you have a list of torque specs for each bolt? Would be very helpful. Thanks!
Tyler Hand hey man I know this comment is very old and u may not even have a bmw anymore but did u ever get those torque specs ? 😂
@@xxxae_ hey. theres a post on bimmerpost under f30 thread that has all the specs from an official bmw service manual i seen a while ago

Thanks for the tutorial.
Just did my f30 suspension today And this tutorial was on point. 😁👍🏼
I just bought a gorgeous EB 335i and your video will come in very handy once I start working on the suspension. Thank you for making the video.

Where are you putting both of your "U" jack stands? I cant tell where to put them.
how long did it take you to install those springs? how long do you think a shop will take to install it? most quoted me 6hr job
Hi, took me about 4.5 hours, but I did it 90% by myself, with only the tools shown

about $650.

Did u need a wheel alignment after this?
Can I use the stock end links with the H&R sport springs? I also have Bilstein B8s if that makes a difference.
yes you can, changing springs does not change the mounting point of the end links on the strut body, you're good to go.
Where can I find that tool for the compression fitting? Instead of using a flat head screw driver like you did.
Something like this is what you need, but I haven't personally tested this one: amzn.to/2vE7vp6
Looks good what you have done to your car so far! Subscribed! Going to try to do some of these mods on my f30 335.
Hi, thanks! I would upgrade your suspension if you're going to do them.

Hey, on this car is a adaptive suspension or normal suspension?
Can you tell a huge difference in handling??
I have a question. Rear coil springs look the same only less coils on upgraded ones so why not just cut off few coils and use stock coil springs? It would reduce load capacity but other than that should be fine and way less expensive.
the rear is easy..... the front is a nightmare
ร๏๓є๒๏๔1 it looks the front is also easy
It’s not e34 easy, where you can remove the sway bar end links, unbolt the strut rod, and drop the suspension so far the spring unloads and the strut pivots out for easy spring removal, but it is no hard than my e46 either.
gonna do this but cant find any go though sockets
Best video that I ever seen.
You should do an aftermarket exhaust video, of a few choices, great channel! Thanks.
Thanks for the suggestion!
what size on the go-through-socket to release the droplink?
Does anyone know if this is similar to doing the same on an F20 (M135i)?
Does the X drive and RWD use the same instruction?
Nice video. Just did mine last night. You get any front shock noise?
Thank! No, did you?

Do the front struts come away in the same way with the adaptive suspension models?

for which part?
where do you find the right torque specs?
