My 5 year old son Matthew is obsessed with trains. This is his favourite video and he watches if every night before bed. Thank you for putting the videos up! (Our local station is Bidston so he gets very excited when it features!)
Just had a thought....Could you imagine how long it would take to travel on ALL the different Train Services in London....including all Tube lines as separate operators?
I done that just before Covid. Travelled on all the Tube lines, all the Overground lines, the trams, the Airline, the DLR, all TOCS excluding LNER, VT & EMT and the Thames clippers. Took me just over 18 hours 😅 starting with SWT in the West at around 530am😂 was better then - more selection of rolling stock!
@@Nooticus yeah it probably could have been quicker another way. Wasn’t doing full lines end to end, I was doing a minimum of 5 stops where possible make it a bit hardier than just doing one station and moving on. I’ve got it written down somewhere, I’ll share it at some point. There’s also a video on a HD. It was on here but taken down years ago for Copyright 🤔😂 still nae idea why.
I’ve also done the same in Edinburgh. I’ve done every bus route and the the trams except for the, Lothian Country and East Coast service outside the city zone. I done that last year though. Also took a looooooong time 😂
Great video. At first, when you were changing from Warrington Central to Bank Quay I thought you were trying to avoid TPE Roulette. Then I remembered they call at Newton-Le-Willows. 😅
As a person from Widnes , yes it used to be Widnes north , but tbh only a 15 min walk to the town centre . Our bigger station used to be further called ditton junction where you could go more places like London . So glad you visited my local station !
Certainly a very interesting journey travelling on six different classes of train as well as the six different TOCs There used to be a loop line serving the centre of Widnes. The current Widnes station used to be called Farnworth, and then Widnes North
Another brilliant video and well narrated. I was in Man Vic that morning and noticed the stranded trams as I travelled in from Leeds. It must have been a sudden cut in power and the passengers they must have had to walk safely back to Victoria with heavy rail trains running by must have been interesting. I’m guessing you were there in the afternoon and they still hadn’t powered it up!!
I see you Widnes a Path and took a walk on it 😂 Great video Nick, I was expecting some fancy graphic to show up for TPE Roulette (Mind you it feels like that with CrossCountry Trains at the minute) and soon LNER as there a overtime ban coming up in July
TPE roulette is so funny i won it so well travelling london kings X to scunthorpe was gonna be a 40 minute wait at doncaster but the previous TPE train was delayed just long enough to speed me up
You didn't mention that "Homeward Bound" was written on Widnes (North) railway station by Paul Simon...... er, actually, he's since admitted he STARTED it at Widnes (North) railway station - but there's still a blue plaque on the station that says he wrote it all there!
Nick continue the great work and i think that you should make so more shorts to promote your long videos like you did with the Hessel to Barton on Humber.
Excellent video. Got to say the change at Central for Bank Quay threw me from what I was expecting you to do to get 6 TOCs (my natural instint was you'd pick up a Cleethorpes-bound TPE at Warrington Central and change for TfW at Oxford Road)
just three bits of History on your journey. 1. Liverpool south parkway station is built on the site of former south Liverpool Football club which was the first ground in the country to host a floodlit match. 2. Widnes station is where Paul Simon sat and wrote 'Homeward bound' (simon & Garfunkel). 3. the Golden Gates in Warrington were initially intended for Buckingham Palace.
There’s also another way that trains could get from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Piccadilly. It’s kinda long. Services would go via the WCML from Liverpool Lime Street via Edge Hill, Mossley Hill, West Allerton, Liverpool South Parkway, Runcorn, Acton Bridge, Greenbank, Northwich, Lostock Gralam, Plumley, Knutsford, Mobberley, Ashley, Hale, Altrincham, Navigation Road, Stockport and Levenshulme. There’s a connecting track between the West Coast Main Line and the Mid-Cheshire Line in Hartford, between Acton Bridge on the West Coast Main Line’s Liverpool Branch and Greenbank on the Mid-Cheshire Line. It’s definitely the long way around though.
By using the main routes you could use for all or part routes;Merseyrail,LNW,TPE,EMT, Northern,Wales and Borders and Metrolink.Advanti West Coast and XC would be detouring to much.
What is the restriction? Do you have to do it by a certain time? Do you have to ride as many trains as you can within the validity of a single ticket? 1:54: The first time I went to Liverpool, I visited South Parkway. I expected it to Liverpool's equivalent of my local big station Clapham Junction, and I was sorely disappointed.
In the absence of direct trains from Manchester Piccadilly or Victoria to Holyhead on SailRail, having a direct train from Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime St to catch the ferry or ship to Dublin as a foot passenger is the next best thing - I wish that Irish Ferries and Stena Line would consider this and even if they had the Dublin Swift Fast Ferry from Liverpool old port (not Birkenhead) to Dublin for foot passengers only, even the Ulysses or the Stena Adventurer, this would make for a very relaxing 8 hours crossing from Liverpool to Dublin
as regards permitted routes i mean its bad advice but its not like they will thoroughly check i accidently went to st pancras the other day on emr with a thameslink split ticket... oopse (i was falling alseep and missed my changeover at luton)
The "11X" precision marker indicates that the driver must stop the front of the train by the board with a certain leeway either side which is less than a regular stop marker. There could also be a "9/11X" which means the same thing. Hope this helps
Which train operator does the best service between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly & Manchester Victoria. I probably would say TransPennine Express. And London Northwestern Railway Class 350/2 Desiro are to be replaced by the Class 730 from next year. Which I think they should go to Northern.
A little detour from transport, have you enjoyed your first year? Would be interesting if you could do a video on a bit of your uni life. I'm old enough to be your uncle and have fond memories when I first entered uni back in 90s.
Travelling from Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime St, there is a station that is the nearest to Liverpool Airport but no trains to or from Manchester stop there, which is a bit odd - personally, when getting the ferry/ship to Ireland from Manchester, I’d sooner go from Liverpool old port in the City Centre on SailRail rather than Birkenhead and rather than Holyhead despite the (more relaxing) 8 hour ship crossing to Dublin - the ship companies and perhaps some coach operators definitely have a gap in the market here, especially if the Irish government bans air travel between Ireland and the U.K. - being Irish myself and having family still living in Ireland, living 22 years in Manchester, I’d love to see the historic shipping links between Liverpool and Dublin reopened
Finally Widnes! controversially probably not where "homeward bound" was written. it was more likely at the now dissused Ditton (Widnes) Station. But the ceremonial plastic is in our ticket office. Keep it up 👍🚂
What ticket did you buy? I shall be travelling from Manchester to Liverpool shortly and had initially planned just taking the TPE direct train. . but maybe something like your trip would be more fun.
You missed a trick by not showing the plaque mentioning that Paul Simon wrote Homeward Bound whilst at Widnes (Widnes would make anyone from anywhere Homesick)
commuting from lime st to Castleton in Manchester everyday i really feel the TPE roulette. every morning i wake up and ask "oh boy what time between 9 and 11 will I be getting into work today"
Widnes Station is actually in Farnworth and when opened in Aug. 1873 was named "Farnworth for Widnes". Around 1914/15 it was renamed "Farnworth for Appleton" then around 1938/9 became "Farnworth (Widnes)". It became "Widnes North" in 1959 then "WIDNES" in May 1968 when "Central" and "South" stations closed.
Probably not permissible; only way I can think to squeeze it in would be to go from Warrington Bank Quay (which is the WCML) down to Crewe, TfW service to Wilmslow then prob Northern (again) to the Airport (a limited service through Styal) and TPE from there into Piccadilly/Victoria. Avanti services to Manchester either branch off at Crewe up the Wilmslow line or have already gone via Stoke further south then Macclesfield. Liverpool ones also branch north of Crewe through Runcorn to Lime Street (not sure if they stop between Lime St and Crewe off hand, never used that route) Going north to Wigan would take the TfW option out. The service Nick uses here is the Manchester to Chester one, whilst the one through Crewe is the Swansea to Manchester route.
