    Unless it's cracked loose or you feel vibration all you gotta do is put in a starter shim

    Just fixed this issue on my 1977 vette… I thought maybe the flex plate was cracked so I turned it by hand and inspected it carefully. No cracks visible so I ordered a shim kit online that gives it clearance so it doesn’t touch anymore. Noise completely gone and no issues! My starter was made by proform and shims are available

    • @georgealmeida7382
      @georgealmeida7382 2 года назад +1

      Because when you put it in reverse the gear on the starter slides away from the flex plate because of the little jerk.then when you put in forward gear it jerks the gear out ..your problem is a bad spring I the starter and it's not retracting the starter gear back away from the flex plate what everybody here forgets is the gear is. It supposed to even be out where it can rub the flex plate after you let go of the ignition key..it will usually rub if your going uphill like a steep driveway or over railroad tracks but not when going down hill because downhill the gravity helps retract the gear.

    Hi. I've got a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, 164,000 miles, 3.3L V6, 5 speed automatic transmission. When it's first started it knocks or rattles for 3 seconds. Then it stops. Once warm it will only do the startup rattle about 50% of the time. Exact same noise returns from about 1,800 to 3,200 RPM and then stops. If I'm going up a hill it won't do it 50% of the time unless I press the gas pedal and cause RPMs to sharply raise.
    The noise increases with RPMs increasing.
    The main bearings and rod bearings were changed. Looked good. No rod or crank shaft slop was noted.
    Oil/filter is new and full. Same with transmission fluid.
    I've narrowed it down to 4 things based on its part time occurrence:
    1. Flex plate?
    2. Timing belt tensioner failing (unknown when last changed)?
    3. Torque converter?
    4. Hydraulic lifters?
    I have two short videos I recorded it and can share. Thanks!

      Have you checked the motor mounts or transmission mount? My truck used to do the same thing and I found out it was a worn motor mount & trans mount that caused the noise.

      @@thesetruths1404 Hm by your description it doesn't sound like either. I've had a rod knock before and its a consistent loud clucking sound that speeds up when your accelerating and you can hear it on idle quietly too. It doesn't go away like you've explained. For mine, I think it might be an intake valve issue. If any screws or the flap itself is loose- it can make a sound at certain rpms/throttle that sounds like a card in bike spokes and briefly on start.

    • @thesetruths1404
      @thesetruths1404 2 года назад

      @@caraliveagain1202 mines louder than a ticking or card clicking. It seems to be coming from the bottom end nearest the oil pan. And two of the bearings pulled out before by previous owner had wear through the silver, into the copper colored metal underneath.

      @@thewhiteelephant Agreed. Flexplate is not flat. There is too much axial runout on the ring gear, should be no more than about ten thou.
