Your video was the first “recent” video on the 7610. Most are 5-6 years ago, nice to hear a fresh perspective. I’ve had my 7610 for almost 3 weeks now, easy to set up (756 Pro III, 7300). I am still learning what all this rig can do, I was diagnosed with RA 2 years ago. My hands don’t work how I want them too lol. Might get an electronic keyer and play cw. Have to put my hearing aids in. The joys of growing old..only 67, still enjoy the hobby. Hope to catch you on the air one day!
Owning both IC-7300 as well as the IC-7600 helped us come to the conclusion that the IC-7300 is the better option when it comes to value for money or even just simplicity of use, most of the money should be put on a GOOD antenna that help reject QRM from the very start, many hams fail here, putting their big money in radios and microphones yet still not being heard.Nevertheless if you suffer for money growing out of your trees than go for the very best that suit you, BUT don't ever try and save money on your antenna
Jonathan I suffer high noise on 40M . In my experience the best work around is a rx only mag loop in the rx port. Even a cheap mla30+ should work quite nicely. Regards Matthew 2E0YMB
I’ve tried that, and while it works well, the mag loop obviously requires a lot of retuning effort every time you move very far on the band or change bands.
I have to agree with slight wobble on the two knobs, however, there has to be some travel to allow the switching function, i guess this doesn’t help. However the one push mute is excellent.. i seem to remember many Icoms used to use hide away knobs which also felt slightly wobbly… however, the fact that they could be hidden away meant they never received damage.. as a CW op. I find the radio really good as is the remote with SDRcontrol…All in all, very happy with it. Thanks for your review ☺️ Lastly, I have to mention Icom UK’s excellent support.
What does a roofing filter do? I'm thinking about getting the ftdx101mp in 6 months. I have no idea how to play with any settings, but I want the 200 watts
@@mcdonald1743 A roofing filter cuts out unwanted noise, and bleed over. My Kenwood TS990 is a joy to listen too. The 990 can make a noisy hf channel sound like 2 meter. If you get a chance to get a high-end rig, DO IT. You wont regret it.
Heard you on it last Friday night, and Saturday night i think, on 40m, i did shout you but only had 10w on my icom 703 portable but you were radio 5 nice audio into Southend (or just down the road) cheers, Paul G7JVB.
For what the 7610 costs, you can purchase three (3) IC-7300’s, and run each one on monobanders. The receiver specs between the two are negligible. So that’s what I did.
I'm sure there are benefits either way. And I am totally not knocking the IC-7300. I have owned one for around 7 years, and would never consider selling it :)
Are you reading this Icom give Jonathan this radio, oh and if you can send one my way it would be appreciated. Thank You 😂 great review, looking to purchase one in the not to distant future.
Very good Jonathan The 7610 takes some beating 👍 You should get some commission from the dealers who will now be flooded with orders?😊 I wonder if there will be updates to the 7300 and 7610? Cheers Robert G3RCE
Lovely to find you on RUclips Jonathan. I hope life is treating you since leaving ML&S. I recently went back to basics and bought a TS-590SG (from ML&S of course) - what an underrated radio if ever there was one. Thanks for the 7610 review! 73 Mike M0SAZ.
probably a stunning radio but not applicable for me in any way (every day use? I wish lol) ,any chance of reviews on radios for compromised shacks or portable operations? I lot of us are stuck in flats and base stations are just a pipe dream, and are never going to happen.
@@M0JSX lol that’s put me on the spot lol how about radios that could be used portable / mobile and as a shack? things like the X6200, FT891 ,FT710 field ,the IC7100 and possibly Lab599 discovery? Different prices and different power outputs but all could be multi use?
I simply don't understand how you find it hard to find anything to improve, scratching the bottom of the barrel? Really? I have the icom ic 7300 , and i believe the 7610 is very similar in the RF gain control? I only just had a few moments with one . As anyone that knows me i complain about the RF gain control at nauseum, it simply is a very poor effort . Under noisy conditions the RF gain control is my ' go to ' sadly the ic7300 is pathetic i believe the 7610 is similar? It simply attenuates, as oposed lifting the noise floor. Drives me to distraction, turning the control fully counterclockwise, leaves you with noise , what a mess . Yet you never even give it a mention? All the superheterodyne rigs i have owed are far better .

Wise words. Antennas matter
Missed the notification! Great video on a reliable radio Jonathan mate, keep it up
Great video Jonathan. Fabulous radio. The best radio I've ever owned. 73, Jonathan.

Hi Matthew, its a good idea, and one I might try! I have tried a LoG which yielded mixed results.
I’ve tried that, and while it works well, the mag loop obviously requires a lot of retuning effort every time you move very far on the band or change bands.
Nice review Jonathan. Got me thinking now !
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for this, Jonathan. The big selling-point for me is having two receivers, which allows rx diversity e.g. polarisation-diversity. 😃

For that kind of money, it should have 200 watts, and a roofing filter. Once you have a roofing filter, you are spoiled and cant go back.

@Wassup-Doc Then why does the Yaesu 101mp have a roofing filter from the factory? And its optional on the "D' model. (the 101 is a hybrid sdr rig)
Roofing Filters are used in conventional SuperHet front ends not a full SDR.

What most of us want is a shack n the box. 705 100w. An upgraded 7100
‘Most’ might be a stretch? I think there is a big market for a 100W shack in the box. I hope Icom is developing something!

IC-7610 vs FTDX10 - the price/performance of the FTDX10 might be better.
Possibly, I’ve not played with the dx10 for any length of time 73!

Love the video Jon
Had it, sold it, no 4M.. went full SDR instead.
‘To each their own’ as the saying goes. Which SDR did you go for?
thank you for not running it on the 11m band. so tired of hearing people brag about these icoms there. take care
Never have, don’t intend on doing so either.
Get rid of all the bells and whistles and crap nobody really needs and it would actually be affordable.
Depends on what features you are after. A lot is covered on the IC-7300
You just broke Wheaton's Law Neal.
HI DER

I am more likely to knock in the attenuator than go to the RF gain. I’m sorry I didn’t cover it. Thanks for watching.
iCOM to the Day I die 💯😍👍
