There was no hesitation because he never took risks as Jimi said the mistakes are where the ideas come from . Every time Jimi played it was a full on exploration of on the spot jamming and ideas . With Srv who I also love it was more a set performance . JIMI HENDRIX is guitar . And for anyone who really hasn’t explored Hendrix’s music ( because his sister is managing his estate and making it hard for people to see his real amazing work on RUclips ) start with his Woodstock improv performance then watch his live machine gun performance . Jimi played it all heavy metal , heavy rock , blues , jazz to acid to country to folk , everything . Whereas Srv was a really good Texas bar blues artist who just played blues to slightly heavy hand blues . There is no competition and Jimi of all people hated being called the greatest and was only concerned with innovation . Of which he is second to none .
Eric Clapton said the same thing. About he would have to pause in his solos. Whereas SRV was a “channel” and he never got lost or had to think about his next note. Especially in his live performances. That was what was different about his solos and I couldn’t figure what it was until EC pointed that out. Amazing.

Jimi was SRVs idol growing up. He had lawyers and agents to negotiate stuff, but Stevie personally asked Jimi's family (Jimi was dead by then) for permission to cover the song. His agents could have handled that, but he thought it was important to do it himself. The thing that makes his performance in this song so great is it's a perfect homage to his idol, but SRV still makes the guitar parts his own.
SRV, every time in interviews I've heard, has always said "there's only one Jimi". Stevie was a prodigy, but he knew where he was pulling from. I think of Stevie as being a perfect musical acolyte - he really gathered all the good and took it forward, but always acknowledged the limits of what he could do with what he gained from those before him. He was just starting to venture into his own territory after he got sober just before he passed. I really wish he'd stayed around longer.
If im not mistaken, Tommy Shannon still tours with a Texas blues group. I'm usually mistaken though lol. Not sure about drummer. Shannon is as solid as Gerry on bass from Rory Ghallaghers band for me, for sure!
Double Trouble is arguably the best blues/rock rhythm section ever. Tommy and Chris are just so damn tight! They played for the song and could follow Stevie down any musical left turn and make it sound rehearsed.
The thing one has to remember about Jimi is that when he was doing what he was doing, no one had EVER done anything even close to that before. He was an innovatror. Every guitar player in rock was shocked by what Jimi was doing, and they all knew they were going to have to step up their game now. He started what we have today, and without Jimi rock music would very likely have taken a completely different trajectory.
Exactly , Jimi was and is the man . And no one even since has made the impact he has and being murdered at the young age of 27 with a couple gallons of wine in his lungs is a tragedy . Jimi’s career lasted only three years and in that time he shaped what music is today .
Reminds me of Pete Townshend's reply when they asked him how he felt seeing Jimi play for the first time - "A hell of a lot of pain!" The Who and Jimi deliberated on who would go on the stage at Monterey Pop last to close the show. Pete used to break his guitars, and Jimi planned on smashing his, too. But Jimi went on last and literally lit the show (his guitar) on fire.

He was a monster player and he gets the credit for taking the guitar where it had never been before, influencing countless players then and now. But Stevie Ray Vaughn is a better player. I've never heard anything Jimi played that Steve Ray can't play as well, bit I never heard Jimi get the pure sound Stevie Ray pulls out of the air.

I never saw anyone feel music the way SRV did-it just went from his soul through the guitar and out of the speakers. He knew that instrument like it was born in his hands. A truly unique natural talent.
I have to agree with your opinions. Both artists are exceptional. Jimmy was truly innovative and Stevie is ONE WITH THE GUITAR. He delivers it like no other.
My favorite quote about SRV "He didn't plug into an amp, he plugged into his soul!" Not the only Jimi Hendrix song he covered. He always said Jimi was the greatest guitarist. I grew up on playing Hendrix and Srv . Hendrix is the man and top of the mountain , Srv is a damn fine blues man and if it weren’t for the fact he straight up stole Albert Kings licks he would be in the top three blues guitarists category but Albert King is the blues . And Jimi is the space and time traveler .

Yes. Please listen to this version of Voodoo Chile also. It is totally different (all versions of SRV's performances are). But this version from Austin in 1989 is faster, cleaner, badder.

The 1989 Austin City Limits concert was the first SRV DVD that I ever bought (Booklet plus CDs & DVD) and I was BLOWN AWAY!!! And then I got the "El Mocambo'' DVD and saw this version and I was equally blown away!!! I can't say which version I like mo' better!!! 😃 I think the El Mocambo version is a bit more psychedelic than the ACL version!!!
@@cathymcmahen271 I've always preferred this El Mocambo version for whatever reason. The speed on the ACL performance just kills some of the groove & cool factor or something for me. It's of course a killer performance musically, just feels like a different song.
When Eddie Van Halen passed away, Steve Vai said of all the great guitar players, and they are a lot of them, only two where truly transformative in the way they changed the instrument and how it was played by players after them. Jimi Hendrix and a Eddie Van Halen. At first i thought SRV belonged on that list but since he arrived on the scene then tragically left, no one has even come close to him. No one. His style is all his own. He was a force of nature that the music simply poured out of. Your reactions are a testament to his power. I’ve seen other players play with feeling and soul, but nothing like SRV. We were lucky to have him, and lessen now that he is gone. SRV always paid tribute and homage to the great blues players like Albert King, Muddy Waters, Jimi, etc.
I was lucky enough to see Stevie play live shortly before he died. I had not heard him before and I thought at the time, this guys pretty good and then he played Voodoo Child. For me, it lauched him into the stratosphere of guitar players, I had never heard anything like that before or since, just an unbelievable talent.

I was fortunate enough to have seen SRV play twice in the early 80's. Once at some nightclub called "Brassy's" on A1A in Cocoa Beach, Fl. and again, of all places, at the Brevard County Fair where I stood about eight feet from the stage. What a performance!! The latter probably contributed to my tinnitus. Worth it!
Hendrix is a critically important pioneer that created this type of music. SRV learned everything Hendrix, Clapton, and all the Blues legends had to offer, swirled it all together and made something even greater, but couldn't have done it without all those great influencers.
he also took stock in the local bands he jammed with and listened to such as Dust.. in the rock world a very little known band but for locals of Oak Cliff back in the 60's they were a huge deal.. they made it onto the rock and roll tree of life.. he took many inspirations from music of all kinds including gospel.. yes Jimi was a hero for him as are many others but he took a little from alot of genres and made it all his own.. he was a god formed from the blues and gospel and then rock .. he will never be forgotten that is for sure. and perhaps before my uncle dies he shares all of the old 8 mm and reel to reels of jam sessions he had with friends and family and other musicians from Oak Cliff..
When Stevie played, every decision he's making in the moment is the absolute perfect decision. Every note and tone is exactly what it's supposed to be. And it all just flows through him. My number one, no doubt.
I saw Stevie play in 1985 in Seattle super humble guy and he made it clear how much he loved his fans, also I was involved in a private bidding for one of Stevie’s guitar straps that I did not win because it sold for $35,000, can you imagine what number 1 guitar would sell for it’s probably a million dollar guitar.
I agree Stevie was humble to his soul, he never did anything to show or say i'm better and thats why all the other greats loved him. he only played the way he did because thats how he felt , thats why every night is a little differant but technically clear and clean. He would stay and play another encore just to make sure that everyone felt like they got their monies worth..
The first time I heard SRV play this, I was in denial - I didn't want to admit that I thought he did it better than Jimi, but man, listening to you comment on this and watching your jaws drop at the same points mine still does, was refreshing. There isn't anyone out there now or ever that played with the feeling and finesse and intensity of Stevie Ray Vaughan he tore that guitar up. His brother Jimmy Vaughn from The fabulous Thunderbirds has his guitar I believe. You guys really need to check out some of his other videos to really appreciate the genius and technique behind that guy's playing. One of the best there ever was or ever will be
Absolutely you've got to carve out some time, even if its just for yourselves, to watch Stevie play Voodoo Chile on his 1989 Austin City Limits appearance, which comes toward the end of his all too brief time here with us. Stevie got clean and sober in Oct 1986 and his music got even better.
One of the best musicians of all time...struck a chord. My grandmother was a professional classical pianist. Not a fan of rock. My brother asked her to watch some of his Live at Montreux DVD and she was speechless except to say, "that man is an incredible musician."

SRV is still the only guy I've ever heard who could cover a Hendrix song and make it his own. Even guys like Gary Moore who was an epic guitar player and who covered many Hendrix songs, never really OWNED them like SRV. Eric Clapton summed it up the best when he said that SRV was the only guitar player who NEVER seemed to loose his way. The music just streamed out of him. Everyone else had (has) to stop once in a while to take a break, catch their bearings and figure out where they are going. SRV never seemed to have to do that. There are a few players who sound almost exactly like their studio recordings which is impressive. I.e. John Petrucci of Dream Theater plays incredibly complex music and it's basically note for note with their studio recordings. Most guitar players sound very different live. I think for most of them, it's because they can't duplicate what they do in the studio in a live setting. SRV was a different beast, he COULD play things note for note, but he chose not to. Every recording was essentially a live performance and every performance was different. Chris and Tommy, and later Reese were the perfect band for him because they could roll with it and keep up. RIP SRV, the GOAT.
If you love Jimi Hendrix, you'll really love Stevie Ray Vaughan; if you love Carlos Santana, you'll love Stevie Ray Vaughan; Johnny Copeland, B.B. King, Albert King, Eric Clapton, and on and on! Stevie Ray had a bit of each them in him, but he had his own, unique style. To me he stood out among the rest! I've been watching Stevie Ray's videos for two weeks now and more than anything I love his live shows because he is so exciting to watch. I love how he freestyles or improvises, and he oozes with passion. He dives deep into the depths of your soul with his music and his live performances are phenomenal. I swear he was born with a guitar and I love his raspy voice! He was definitely a blues man a lil' bit of jazz and lil' bit of funk rock. Did he ever get blisters on his fingers? He had such great precision and endurance. I'm saddened he isn't around anymore.
Because I loved Jimi Hendrix I was at that SRV show as a 17 year old from Buffalo because a friend took me and said I needed to see this guartist who played Hendrix. Nobody coverd Jimi better and that night in Toronto made me an SRV fan for life.

When it comes to idols, many folks have trouble being honest because they don't like having their idols taken off that pedestal. But I don't look at it that way, since no matter how good someone is, someone else will learn from them and just elevate that pedestal they are both part of. If Stevie could have gone back in time and played in front of Jimi, Hendrix's jaw would've hit the floor as he recognized his own art brought to another level.
As a person who saw both guitarists in their prime I just want to say that Hendrix was an inventive guitarist technically and musically who was pioneering the guitar style that Vaughan had the luxury of studying at length in it's entirety.
that roy buchanan had already started and done by the time hendrix , beck , page etc did it ... people forget he was the muscos muscisian that these greats copied bits of .. Roy used no pedals to get those sounds .. just both hands and fingers .. didnt see hendrix, but seen both buchanan and srv few times ... so totally understand what you are sayimg .. Roy used to say .." there are no number ones " .. and thats totally correct .. but just for a little bit of history of poor forgotton Roy Buchanan .. he started in mid 50s at abt 15 on rd alone , he had mastered the tele well ( gibson think first ) well before most of the 60s greats had really started .. and they all came to see him play and learn from him .. Beck was heavily influenced by him ... why Roy wrote .. my friend jeff .. worth a listen .. Beck and S Wonder(writer) dedicated .. on becks blow by blow ... cause we ended as lovers ... to roy ... even in mid 50s as a younger kid than robbie robertson he also mentored himfor a few months to get him up to speed ..

Stevie loved and respected Jimi and this cover reflects that...Hendrix was an inventor and creator, he spent less time on technical aspects. And Stevie had a lifetime to perfect .And as Stevie said, copying isn't creating.

I idolized Jimi, he was my hero and still is however, when Srv came out after like 3 years I finally admired defeat and crossed over. I mean Jimis a God on guitar but Stevies “ the God” in my opinion. Jimi was Stevies inspiration and for Stevie to honor Jimi by playing his music is an amazing legacy for Jimi. RIP to both and I’ll bet nobody comes close in rock n roll heaven!! God surely is proud of his accomplishments!!
Have been a fan of SRV ever since I witnessed him in a venue in downtown Houston. It was 1974, was crushing around with one of my buddies, there was Schlitz 24oz involved. He had a big red Buick two door, rag top. Anyway we ended up at a place called “Inn on The Square” (picnic tables and a stage). The chalkboard outside announced Stephen Raymond Vaughn. Years later while serving in the U.S.A.F. stationed in Italy took a trip to the Montreaux Jazz Femstival, SRV was on the card. They booed him. However David Bowie was there and asked SRV to play on his next album, “Let’s Dance”.We shrugged and paid our cover charge. Sat down and witnessed the beginnings of (IMHO) the GOAT of Texas Blues. I don't know if you know the story (and I didn't see it in the comments): Now IIRC when SRV went to Jimi's Father to ask permission to play Voodoo Child, Mr. Hendrix made him play his version right there. He was so moved by the performance, he gave SRV Jimi's WAH Pedal (so in this video you are listening to Jimi Hendrix's WAH Pedal being used to cover a Jimi Hendrix Song). Enjoy!
'Slight Return' is meant to say that this song is a bit of a reprise of another Jimi Hendrix song earlier on that same album called "Voodoo Chile". So "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" is basically like saying "we're almost playing Voodoo Chile again, but it's not quite the same." On another note, you guys should definitely check out the first Voodoo Chile by Jimi :)
I went back and listened to the longer Voodoo Chile recently after not listening to it for a while and it is easy to forget how outstanding it is because of the success of 'slight return'. Definitely should be covered.

You have to remember Stevie was paying tribute to his heroes every time he picked up the guitar. He took every lesson they had for him and made it his own, out of respect. This song is no different. I think if Jimi and Stevie ever met and got to play together they would respect each other.

Stevie Ray didn't play guitar, he was actually possessed by it and the guitar played him. You could actually have a series with Stevie reacting to let's say Voodoo Chile from different performances because they are ALL different. Also, did you catch he went into another song for 10 seconds or so and then right back to the Voodoo?
Hard to get more badass than that performance by SRV. If you want to see him play damn near the entire song of Voodoo Child behind his back - look up his performance of it live in Nashville. Most epic performance I’ve ever seen - of ANYTHING.

I agree with others, it's the Austin City Limits 1989 version of this song that you NEED to see. Stevie was clean, sober & happy. You can see & hear the difference. Plus, it's a better quality video, you can see what he's doing much better. It's worth doing in addition to this one. Hope you do it! Btw, Austin City Limits is a long running show on PBS. Stevie appeared on it twice, in '83 & '89. He was ill in '83 & even though he played well, the '89 appearance is better in every way. It's so popular & so often requested, PBS still airs it occasionally & features it when they celebrate their anniversaries, fundraising etc. 💙☮💙☮💙☮💙☮💙
Back in the 70s bands weren't hard to compete against each other they were out to complement each other , that's why I today young guys like Chris Stapleton play all that music from then, cuz those guys paved the way or else when they died their music would have died with them and everyone has their own style and I love them all in 1967 I was ten and listening to all my sisters music I was hooked
I agree I was lucky enough to see him a couple of times in the UK and up close . He was q something else . Technically I would question in a different sense the guys I've been lucky enough to see specifically john mclaughlin or allan holdsworth but they're in a different realm

Great reaction. Stevie was a humble man & would say Jimi is the best. Jimmy Vaughan is Stevie Ray's older brother. Can't we just love them all cause all play differently? He is exciting to watch for sure & he never played a song the same way twice.
I’m an old man now, but when I was 19 I would sometimes work part time for a “sound reinforcement” company called Cisco Sound, which would occasionally get hired to help out big shows in town. There was a famous little bar around the corner from Texas Tech University called Fat Dawgs, which hired us for an upcoming show - Stevie Ray Vaughn was opening for Joe Ely (if that puts things into context). By that time, I had seen SRV play a couple of times in town, and he was already on everyone’s radar. There wasn’t anything recorded that you could buy (that I knew of) but we sure knew his name when it popped up in the “entertainment” section of the newspaper. We set up some extra bass horns and amps, rans some cables, taped everything down and did a sound-check or two. SRV was as pleasant of a person as you could possibly hope to meet, and I had the chance to exchange a few words and well-wishes. Halfway through the night, I looked up and saw the Fire Marshall standing at the door telling the bar that no one else could come in unless someone left first. I peeped outside and it looked like there as many people outside as there was inside. After the show, when the bar emptied out, it was like a tornado had gone through the place. Waiters and waitresses set chairs back on their feet, as we packed our stuff out. A few months later the whole thing would repeat itself at The Cotton Club on the outskirts of town. These are all damn good memories for me. La and Che, congratulations on your channel.
That guitar had several necks replaced because SRV was a thick fingered beast of a note bender. It's why he had thicker than normal strings because his fingers would snap lights like thread. You can see on close ups his fingers could crush a walnut.

Jimi was SRVs idol growing up. He had lawyers and agents to negotiate stuff, but Stevie personally asked Jimi's family (Jimi was dead by then) for permission to cover the song. His agents could have handled that, but he thought it was important to do it himself.
The thing that makes his performance in this song so great is it's a perfect homage to his idol, but SRV still makes the guitar parts his own.

SRV, every time in interviews I've heard, has always said "there's only one Jimi". Stevie was a prodigy, but he knew where he was pulling from. I think of Stevie as being a perfect musical acolyte - he really gathered all the good and took it forward, but always acknowledged the limits of what he could do with what he gained from those before him. He was just starting to venture into his own territory after he got sober just before he passed. I really wish he'd stayed around longer.
Bass and drums are highly underrated. They had to adapt on the fly as SRV never played a song the same way twice.

Double Trouble is arguably the best blues/rock rhythm section ever. Tommy and Chris are just so damn tight! They played for the song and could follow Stevie down any musical left turn and make it sound rehearsed.

The thing one has to remember about Jimi is that when he was doing what he was doing, no one had EVER done anything even close to that before. He was an innovatror.
Every guitar player in rock was shocked by what Jimi was doing, and they all knew they were going to have to step up their game now. He started what we have today, and without Jimi rock music would very likely have taken a completely different trajectory.
Exactly , Jimi was and is the man . And no one even since has made the impact he has and being murdered at the young age of 27 with a couple gallons of wine in his lungs is a tragedy . Jimi’s career lasted only three years and in that time he shaped what music is today .
Reminds me of Pete Townshend's reply when they asked him how he felt seeing Jimi play for the first time - "A hell of a lot of pain!" The Who and Jimi deliberated on who would go on the stage at Monterey Pop last to close the show. Pete used to break his guitars, and Jimi planned on smashing his, too. But Jimi went on last and literally lit the show (his guitar) on fire.
Absolutely NONE of that makes him the greatest guitar player. SRV was far superior when it came down to just playing. He has no equal. Not even Jimi.

He was a monster player and he gets the credit for taking the guitar where it had never been before, influencing countless players then and now. But Stevie Ray Vaughn is a better player. I've never heard anything Jimi played that Steve Ray can't play as well, bit I never heard Jimi get the pure sound Stevie Ray pulls out of the air.

I grew up on playing Hendrix and Srv . Hendrix is the man and top of the mountain , Srv is a damn fine blues man and if it weren’t for the fact he straight up stole Albert Kings licks he would be in the top three blues guitarists category but Albert King is the blues . And Jimi is the space and time traveler .

Yes. Please listen to this version of Voodoo Chile also. It is totally different (all versions of SRV's performances are). But this version from Austin in 1989 is faster, cleaner, badder.

The 1989 Austin City Limits concert was the first SRV DVD that I ever bought (Booklet plus CDs & DVD) and I was BLOWN AWAY!!! And then I got the "El Mocambo'' DVD and saw this version and I was equally blown away!!! I can't say which version I like mo' better!!! 😃 I think the El Mocambo version is a bit more psychedelic than the ACL version!!!

When Eddie Van Halen passed away, Steve Vai said of all the great guitar players, and they are a lot of them, only two where truly transformative in the way they changed the instrument and how it was played by players after them. Jimi Hendrix and a Eddie Van Halen. At first i thought SRV belonged on that list but since he arrived on the scene then tragically left, no one has even come close to him. No one. His style is all his own. He was a force of nature that the music simply poured out of. Your reactions are a testament to his power. I’ve seen other players play with feeling and soul, but nothing like SRV. We were lucky to have him, and lessen now that he is gone. SRV always paid tribute and homage to the great blues players like Albert King, Muddy Waters, Jimi, etc.

I was lucky enough to see Stevie play live shortly before he died. I had not heard him before and I thought at the time, this guys pretty good and then he played Voodoo Child. For me, it lauched him into the stratosphere of guitar players, I had never heard anything like that before or since, just an unbelievable talent.

I'm sure someone will have said this before, but Stevie loved Jimmie and while he made songs "his own" he was more faithful to the original artist than many could even be capable of being. Just in case y'all might have known this, Stevie Ray Vaughan couldn't read music...Several other fantastic guitar players couldn't either.
Jimi did it with amplification and feedback, SRV did it with notes. The effect is identical. Two musical geniuses. Jimmy V. is his older brother. Plays in The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

I was fortunate enough to have seen SRV play twice in the early 80's. Once at some nightclub called "Brassy's" on A1A in Cocoa Beach, Fl. and again, of all places, at the Brevard County Fair where I stood about eight feet from the stage. What a performance!! The latter probably contributed to my tinnitus. Worth it!

Hendrix is a critically important pioneer that created this type of music. SRV learned everything Hendrix, Clapton, and all the Blues legends had to offer, swirled it all together and made something even greater, but couldn't have done it without all those great influencers.
he also took stock in the local bands he jammed with and listened to such as Dust.. in the rock world a very little known band but for locals of Oak Cliff back in the 60's they were a huge deal.. they made it onto the rock and roll tree of life.. he took many inspirations from music of all kinds including gospel.. yes Jimi was a hero for him as are many others but he took a little from alot of genres and made it all his own.. he was a god formed from the blues and gospel and then rock .. he will never be forgotten that is for sure. and perhaps before my uncle dies he shares all of the old 8 mm and reel to reels of jam sessions he had with friends and family and other musicians from Oak Cliff..

When Stevie played, every decision he's making in the moment is the absolute perfect decision. Every note and tone is exactly what it's supposed to be. And it all just flows through him. My number one, no doubt.
I saw Stevie play in 1985 in Seattle super humble guy and he made it clear how much he loved his fans, also I was involved in a private bidding for one of Stevie’s guitar straps that I did not win because it sold for $35,000, can you imagine what number 1 guitar would sell for it’s probably a million dollar guitar.
I agree Stevie was humble to his soul, he never did anything to show or say i'm better and thats why all the other greats loved him. he only played the way he did because thats how he felt , thats why every night is a little differant but technically clear and clean. He would stay and play another encore just to make sure that everyone felt like they got their monies worth..

His brother Jimmy Vaughn from The fabulous Thunderbirds has his guitar I believe. You guys really need to check out some of his other videos to really appreciate the genius and technique behind that guy's playing. One of the best there ever was or ever will be

Absolutely you've got to carve out some time, even if its just for yourselves, to watch Stevie play Voodoo Chile on his 1989 Austin City Limits appearance, which comes toward the end of his all too brief time here with us. Stevie got clean and sober in Oct 1986 and his music got even better.

One of the best musicians of all time...struck a chord. My grandmother was a professional classical pianist. Not a fan of rock. My brother asked her to watch some of his Live at Montreux DVD and she was speechless except to say, "that man is an incredible musician."

SRV is still the only guy I've ever heard who could cover a Hendrix song and make it his own. Even guys like Gary Moore who was an epic guitar player and who covered many Hendrix songs, never really OWNED them like SRV.
Eric Clapton summed it up the best when he said that SRV was the only guitar player who NEVER seemed to loose his way. The music just streamed out of him. Everyone else had (has) to stop once in a while to take a break, catch their bearings and figure out where they are going. SRV never seemed to have to do that.
There are a few players who sound almost exactly like their studio recordings which is impressive. I.e. John Petrucci of Dream Theater plays incredibly complex music and it's basically note for note with their studio recordings. Most guitar players sound very different live. I think for most of them, it's because they can't duplicate what they do in the studio in a live setting. SRV was a different beast, he COULD play things note for note, but he chose not to. Every recording was essentially a live performance and every performance was different. Chris and Tommy, and later Reese were the perfect band for him because they could roll with it and keep up.

Stevie Ray had a bit of each them in him, but he had his own, unique style. To me he stood out among the rest! I've been watching Stevie Ray's videos for two weeks now and more than anything I love his live shows because he is so exciting to watch. I love how he freestyles or improvises, and he oozes with passion. He dives deep into the depths of your soul with his music and his live performances are phenomenal. I swear he was born with a guitar and I love his raspy voice! He was definitely a blues man a lil' bit of jazz and lil' bit of funk rock. Did he ever get blisters on his fingers? He had such great precision and endurance. I'm saddened he isn't around anymore.

Because I loved Jimi Hendrix I was at that SRV show as a 17 year old from Buffalo because a friend took me and said I needed to see this guartist who played Hendrix. Nobody coverd Jimi better and that night in Toronto made me an SRV fan for life.

When it comes to idols, many folks have trouble being honest because they don't like having their idols taken off that pedestal. But I don't look at it that way, since no matter how good someone is, someone else will learn from them and just elevate that pedestal they are both part of. If Stevie could have gone back in time and played in front of Jimi, Hendrix's jaw would've hit the floor as he recognized his own art brought to another level.
Nothing saying that you can only idolize one person. No one has to be brought down for someone else to rise up.

As a person who saw both guitarists in their prime I just want to say that Hendrix was an inventive guitarist technically and musically who was pioneering the guitar style that Vaughan had the luxury of studying at length in it's entirety.
that roy buchanan had already started and done by the time hendrix , beck , page etc did it ... people forget he was the muscos muscisian that these greats copied bits of .. Roy used no pedals to get those sounds .. just both hands and fingers .. didnt see hendrix, but seen both buchanan and srv few times ... so totally understand what you are sayimg .. Roy used to say .." there are no number ones " .. and thats totally correct .. but just for a little bit of history of poor forgotton Roy Buchanan .. he started in mid 50s at abt 15 on rd alone , he had mastered the tele well ( gibson think first ) well before most of the 60s greats had really started .. and they all came to see him play and learn from him .. Beck was heavily influenced by him ... why Roy wrote .. my friend jeff .. worth a listen .. Beck and S Wonder(writer) dedicated .. on becks blow by blow ... cause we ended as lovers ... to roy ... even in mid 50s as a younger kid than robbie robertson he also mentored himfor a few months to get him up to speed ..

Stevie loved and respected Jimi and this cover reflects that...Hendrix was an inventor and creator, he spent less time on technical aspects. And Stevie had a lifetime to perfect .And as Stevie said, copying isn't creating.

Have been a fan of SRV ever since I witnessed him in a venue in downtown Houston. It was 1974, was crushing around with one of my buddies, there was Schlitz 24oz involved. He had a big red Buick two door, rag top. Anyway we ended up at a place called “Inn on The Square” (picnic tables and a stage). The chalkboard outside announced Stephen Raymond Vaughn. Years later while serving in the U.S.A.F. stationed in Italy took a trip to the Montreaux Jazz Femstival, SRV was on the card. They booed him. However David Bowie was there and asked SRV to play on his next album, “Let’s Dance”.We shrugged and paid our cover charge. Sat down and witnessed the beginnings of (IMHO) the GOAT of Texas Blues. I’ve seen that guitar in a museum in San Antonio. Also saw it played both nights they recorded the Live Alive album at the old Austin Opera House.
I don't know if you know the story (and I didn't see it in the comments): Now IIRC when SRV went to Jimi's Father to ask permission to play Voodoo Child, Mr. Hendrix made him play his version right there. He was so moved by the performance, he gave SRV Jimi's WAH Pedal (so in this video you are listening to Jimi Hendrix's WAH Pedal being used to cover a Jimi Hendrix Song). Enjoy!
Stevie Ray is the Goat!
'Slight Return' is meant to say that this song is a bit of a reprise of another Jimi Hendrix song earlier on that same album called "Voodoo Chile". So "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" is basically like saying "we're almost playing Voodoo Chile again, but it's not quite the same." On another note, you guys should definitely check out the first Voodoo Chile by Jimi :)
I went back and listened to the longer Voodoo Chile recently after not listening to it for a while and it is easy to forget how outstanding it is because of the success of 'slight return'. Definitely should be covered.

You have to remember Stevie was paying tribute to his heroes every time he picked up the guitar. He took every lesson they had for him and made it his own, out of respect. This song is no different. I think if Jimi and Stevie ever met and got to play together they would respect each other.

Stevie Ray didn't play guitar, he was actually possessed by it and the guitar played him. You could actually have a series with Stevie reacting to let's say Voodoo Chile from different performances because they are ALL different. Also, did you catch he went into another song for 10 seconds or so and then right back to the Voodoo?

Btw, Austin City Limits is a long running show on PBS. Stevie appeared on it twice, in '83 & '89.
He was ill in '83 & even though he played well, the '89 appearance is better in every way. It's so popular & so often requested, PBS still airs it occasionally & features it when they celebrate their anniversaries, fundraising etc.

Back in the 70s bands weren't hard to compete against each other they were out to complement each other , that's why I today young guys like Chris Stapleton play all that music from then, cuz those guys paved the way or else when they died their music would have died with them and everyone has their own style and I love them all in 1967 I was ten and listening to all my sisters music I was hooked

I’m an old man now, but when I was 19 I would sometimes work part time for a “sound reinforcement” company called Cisco Sound, which would occasionally get hired to help out big shows in town. There was a famous little bar around the corner from Texas Tech University called Fat Dawgs, which hired us for an upcoming show - Stevie Ray Vaughn was opening for Joe Ely (if that puts things into context). By that time, I had seen SRV play a couple of times in town, and he was already on everyone’s radar. There wasn’t anything recorded that you could buy (that I knew of) but we sure knew his name when it popped up in the “entertainment” section of the newspaper. We set up some extra bass horns and amps, rans some cables, taped everything down and did a sound-check or two. SRV was as pleasant of a person as you could possibly hope to meet, and I had the chance to exchange a few words and well-wishes. Halfway through the night, I looked up and saw the Fire Marshall standing at the door telling the bar that no one else could come in unless someone left first. I peeped outside and it looked like there as many people outside as there was inside. After the show, when the bar emptied out, it was like a tornado had gone through the place. Waiters and waitresses set chairs back on their feet, as we packed our stuff out. A few months later the whole thing would repeat itself at The Cotton Club on the outskirts of town. These are all damn good memories for me. La and Che, congratulations on your channel.

That guitar had several necks replaced because SRV was a thick fingered beast of a note bender. It's why he had thicker than normal strings because his fingers would snap lights like thread. You can see on close ups his fingers could crush a walnut.
