I’m seconding the recommendation for ‘Texas Flood’, live at the El Mocambo, 7/20/83 (41 years ago this past Saturday!). There are probably dozens more reccs for it in the rest of the comments! You guys will looooove it. I promise!
You need to hear SRV's original "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up On Love" (live at The Capitol Theater). Amazing vocals PLUS his guitar mastery! And another original from the same concert... "Life Without You" (a must among his best)! Stevie Ray Vaughan had God-like hands, guitar in his soul, and a humble heart. He was truly connected to another world! A rare and special gift. His tight, talented band was called Double Trouble... Chris Layton, drums; Tommy Shannon, bass; and Reese Wynans, keys. Check out their "Cold Shot" official music video... hilarious!
"Look At Little Sister" is another lively, lighter SRV tune -- not so heavy in the blues motif. The "wah-wah" or "wah" pedal makes the strange "trick" with the notes; there's also something called a "fuzz box" or "fuzz pedal" that does a different type of distortion. It's my understanding SRV became fast friends with Jimi Hendrix and his family; some of the equipment SRV played with used to be Jimi's, gifted to Mr. Vaughan after Jimi's death!
Stevie should always been seen live. His song "Texas Flood" live at El Mocambo and "Mary had a little lamb" at Austin city limits are both incredible. He is the GOAT.
Hi John & Lulu, I'm 66 and I'm an ex musician ( even though I'm told your never ex) but from the same Austin City Limits show in 1989 where Stevie broke a string on the song Look at Little Sister and changed guitars in the middle of the song. BTW John it's his effect pedal that's creating the sound and SRV fantastic playing, he was the GOAT ( greatest of all time) RIP Stevie 10/3/1954 - 8/27/1990 🙏
@@tbrackett8389 Yes, he did use 13-gauge strings, and still managed to break those on a regular basis. He used heavier strings due to habitually breaking the smaller gauge strings. Last I read he did drop down to 11-gauge strings after he got sober.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was and still is (god rest his soul) the king of Texas blues/rock. the man was talented beyond all reason and was taken from us way too soon. Stevie Ray falls under the same category as old school ZZ Top, The Fabulous Thunderbirds (his brother Jimmie Vaughan was in this group), Freddie King, Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King. This is a song written and made famous by Jimi Hendrix. No one can cover it like Stevie Ray Vaughan. Mainly a Blues musician, but he can do so many things with a guitar. In my personal opinion, he is the best ever when it comes to Blues. Try "Ain't Gone 'n Given Up On Love" from the Capitol Theater. Great stuff.
SRV was a legend... still is... if you watch it you will see that for a lot of the time he isnt even plaing with his eyes open... he knows exactly where the notes are that he wants and he doesnt need a script - he writes it as he plays RIP SRV !! the GOAT !!
Stevie Ray Vaughan (rest in peace) is a complete EXPERIENCE! He’s one of those guys where u knew exactly where u were when u heard the news he died in a helicopter crash. Well shit now I’m second guessing myself, it could’ve been a plane crash. In my case I was paying for shoes in a mall in Lubbock Texas. And you’re right, there’s tons of layers to this God of a guitarist! He’ll always be at the top of my list. He’s a complete magician of a musician!
You two are hilarious, love all the blurted out reactions and innuendos, and especially that both of you got chills and goosebumps about the same time. Stevie is so natural, he never seemed to play anything the same way even twice. Voodoo child is the perfect example. Fresh and new each time, but always true to the core of Jimi's masterpiece. And Stevie did have great strength in those hands. That one armed playing along the neck is my favorite, he seemed to look at that guitar with love...or something. You gotta try "Little Wing", at the El Macombo. Or "Texas Flood", same show. Just WOW. Try anything that anyone suggests because you can't loose. Make certain it's a live performance. Love you still Stevie Ray. 💙. ☮️
"Stevie was an endless, open channel that music just poured out of. He made people who'd never touched a guitar in their life want to pick one up and start playing, and he made those of us who'd played live onstage with him before want to quit."..................Eric Clapton.
"Look at Little Sister" with SRV and Jeff Healey... Two absolute MASTERS of the guitar and two good friends jamming together. One of, if not the best ever!
"Life Without You" and "Tin Pan Alley" are a must! Always live, I don't think there are studio versions of SRV because he is experienced, not listened to. Will sub for more SRV RIP❤
He could shred behind his back and with his teeth. It’s really something watching a master that can pour their emotions through an instrument like it’s an extension of their body.
Truly one of the greatest guitarist ever. There are videos of him on stage in the middle of a song and a string broke. He kept playing with the string flopping and he never missed a lick. A stage hand brought out his backup guitar and they changed out in about 8 beats and jumped right back into the song. This was a man that played with his entire being. I think he would actually be classified as a blues rocker.
SRV ,,THE Goat ,one of the best ever, rhythm and blues classic rock he got to hang out with BB King,Buddy guy,Jimmy Hendrix all the good ones that are in the heavens,,it's always the young men some a little older but you two have soal as well good reactions from Corpus Christi,, Texas (LEM.✌️
The beginning that sound is called muted, he's got his fingers touching the strings but he's not pressing them down against the fret so its a muted sound. The playing with his junk part or that thing you step on are guitar pedals with various programmed sounds that he's pressing with his foot.
I always felt like SRV was an open medium channeling music seamlessly and effortlessly like no other guitarist has ever done. He died in 1990 at the age of 36, and what more would he have given us had he lived? There are many guitarist who play amazingly well, but few with as much emotion as this man did IMHO. RIP SRV. Some must-listen suggestions: Pride and Joy, Leave My Little Girl Alone, Couldn’t Stand The Weather, Little Wing, Ain’t Gonna Give Up On Love, Blues At Sunrise (With Albert King). I enjoyed your reaction, TY.
Now you know why he is considered arguably the greatest guitar player ever. Please check out Stevie and his brother Jimmy playing Pipeline on the same double neck guitar. It's fantastic
Voodoo Chile was an original composition of the one and only Jimi Hendrix. From the album Electric Ladyland released in I believe 1968. Give him a listen if you like!
The original person to "unlock" wild sounds from an electric guitar was Jimi Hendrix who is my all time favorite guitarist. But then, SRV is also my all time favorite guitarist and that's how it should be in my opinion.
One needs to understand SRV knew how to use his peddles to great effect. However, don't lose sight of his ability on the strings. His own brother described his style of playing...."Stevie plays his guitar like he is trying to break our of jail". Good??? GOAT!!!
You know we have gone into an entirely different world when folks like these 2 don't even know who Stevie Ray was. I mean even though the big band era was before my time I still know who they were.
This song is a cover of Jimi Hendrix, and in my opinion, it's better than the original. SRV did not read music, so every time he played the same song it was slightly different and always AWESOME!!!!!!
Stevie was given Jimi Hendrix’s father because he asked permission to play his music and was given his WaWa pedal that you are hearing in this song. There are only three instruments, a bass, a electric guitar, and drums. He sounded like multiple musicians but it was just the three of them SRV and Double Trouble. Amazing guitarist and one of a kind. He could not read music but vreated a beautiful song called “Riviera Paradise” that I know you have probably heard on easy listening channels. Beautiful and on his guitar!
I missed the Vietnamese barbecue in the big Texas. He came back to pay homage to the people. That yet Stubbs barbecue at fed. And when they were trying to get notes. Hey, he came back and he brought people to stud barbecue. Steerie Rodden, what's a wonderful person?
He's doing a Jimi Hendrix song Voodoo child. Jimi first one to use the wah wah pedal. Stevie does a freaking southern Rock justice to it. Stevie is a Blues guitarist but more Texas Grit added in. Gave it more attitude
SRV ~ 🎸🐐 The goatiest goat in all of goatness Stevie couldn't read music, and 110% played freestyle. And he never played a song the same way twice. Each was it's own masterpiece. For the next two in the holy trinity of SRV vids: **Texas Flood at El Macambo** **Life Without You at Capitol Theater**
He styled his play after his Jimi Hendrix mixing blues with rock. His sound is unique because just like Jimi Hendrix he uses large guitar strings. Did you know he can't read guitar string notes? He plays by ear. He tells his band mates to just watch him and adjust to the way he playing because he doesn't know how he was going to play the song on concert night. I've heard him play 3 different versions of voodoo child.
BB King said, “When I play I have to think about what I’m going to play.. and I play in sentences. But Stevie ain’t like that, when Stevie plays, he don’t have to thing at all.. and he plays in paragraphs.”
Okay, so in the part of his early solo, there it looks like he's "dry humping the guitar". No, he has a pedal that is cutting in some effect. It's a slidable filter worked with the foot. What I hear is, that wah-wah pedal that Stevie has is Jimi H.'s. Stevie went up to Jimi's uncle's house in Washington and had a long conversation and explained how he is the biggest fan of Jimi's and would do nothing to disrespect Jimi's memory. Jimi's uncle gave/sold Stevie the pedal. That's what I've heard. If the story is true, Stevie did honor his pledge to Jimi's uncle. Good on you, Stevie.

Most Definitely. I was thinking the exact same thing. If you really want to experience SRV, that is the one to see.
"Texas Flood" live at El Mocambo HAS to be the next one.....mind blowing.
Celebrated????? He is the GOAT!!!!
Hi John & Lulu, I'm 66 and I'm an ex musician ( even though I'm told your never ex) but from the same Austin City Limits show in 1989 where Stevie broke a string on the song Look at Little Sister and changed guitars in the middle of the song. Pedal on loan from Jimi Hendrick's father
The effects pedal is called a wah-wah pedal, and that pedal originally belonged to Jimi Hendrix.
My understanding is that Stevie used a very heavy/thick string. He was just bad ass!
@@tbrackett8389 Yes, he did use 13-gauge strings, and still managed to break those on a regular basis. He used heavier strings due to habitually breaking the smaller gauge strings. Last I read he did drop down to 11-gauge strings after he got sober.

Little Wing and Texas Flood Live from El Macambo.

Best guitar performance of all time.

"How's he doing that?" Without a doubt, that is the most common phrase uttered by people getting their first exposure to this god of the guitar.
You finally found the GOAT.... Can't go a day without some Stevie Ray. 🎸
The devil went to Georgia to steal a soul, then he went to Texas to learn to play guitar. RIP Stevie, you were the master guitar masters looked up to.
SRV was a legend... still is... if you watch it you will see that for a lot of the time he isnt even plaing with his eyes open... he knows exactly where the notes are that he wants and he doesnt need a script - he writes it as he plays RIP SRV !! the GOAT !!

These legends make it look way too easy!
Everyone's favorite guitar player loves Stevie Ray Vaughan
When someone discovers SRV....priceless!! Suggest Mary Had A Little Lamb. Unreal!!
Srv and Johnny Copland playing tin pan alley . And you will get a good taste of the blues.
"Life Without You" and "Tin Pan Alley" are a must! Always live, I don't think there are studio versions of SRV because he is experienced, not listened to. Will sub for more SRV RIP❤
This whole show at The Austin City Limits is Some of the best live recordings of SRV and Double Trouble, more than worth a look.SRV
GOAT = SRV ..The best there was and the best ever to be !
Stevie kicks ass..and that rhythm section kicks ass too!
He could shred behind his back and with his teeth. It’s really something watching a master that can pour their emotions through an instrument like it’s an extension of their body.
Stevie was a conduit for communicating emotion through a guitar. One of the best of all time.

This brings me so much JOY ALL THESE YEARS LATER srv IS STILL BLOWING MINDS AND RINGING SOUL BELLS! Oops on the caps loc but not really!
SRV Texas Flood live is the pinnacle of guitar playing!
SRV is one of the greatest guitarists ever. He’s always in the top 5. His style is blues. I truly hope you go down the SRV rabbit hole.
He does not use peddles or picks it's all his sound. Greatest guitarist of all time.
What? Of course he uses picks and pedals. Tell me you know nothing about SRV without telling me. Jeez
RIP legend
"Playing the kitty" is a great way to get your spouse into songs with guitar solos lol
He is pure BLUES guitar talks
Watch "Look at Little Sister" with Jeff Healy & SRV. Also, you need to see when he plays just as well when he puts the guitar behind his back.
I second the El Mocambo version of Texas flood. It’s so sad that he was taken from us too soon.
Listen to the comments: Stevie Ray Vaughn- Texas Flood live at the El Mocambo

Ahhhhh. It is on display in Austin….makes sense. He was there so much and…I was at his statue along the walk in town.
"Cold Shot" and long live version of "Life Without You"!
He was using a wah pedal to get those tones. It varies the amount of treble and bass.
He's steppin' on a Wawa petal which belonged to Jimi Hendrix. ❤❤
Yep... another planet.
I saw him live, guy made no sense. Seen a zillion guitar players and he was the most natural gifted one.
Saw him live in a small venue. Awe inspiring!
This song is a cover of Jimi Hendrix, and in my opinion, it's better than the original. SRV did not read music, so every time he played the same song it was slightly different and always AWESOME!!!!!!
Watch "Riviera Paradise" from the 1989 Austin City Limits show to see him make more unusual sounds come from his guitar.
Evolution can’t create a talent like this.
I beg to differ. His brother Jimmy was a very well regarded blues guitarist. It seems there is a genetic component here somewhere.
Genetics is possibly the worst argument for evolution. Vastly and and significantly worse than that of creationism

Love that the drummer got such an equal part
He's doing a Jimi Hendrix song Voodoo child.
Jimi first one to use the wah wah pedal.
Stevie does a freaking southern Rock justice to it.
Stevie is a Blues guitarist but more Texas Grit added in. Gave it more attitude
SRV ~ 🎸🐐 The goatiest goat in all of goatness

For the next two in the holy trinity of SRV vids:
**Texas Flood at El Macambo**
**Life Without You at Capitol Theater**
I love this man!G.O.A.T. Period!
Lulu I can't believe you said that because I've always thought that his guitar probably needed a cigarette after that!!
"LIFE WITHOUT YOU" Live at THE CAPITAL THEATER in N.J.
The GOAT OF GOATS!😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 And don’t forget Double Trouble, the best of the best bottoms!
Texas Flood - Live at the el mocambo

SRV has his roots in blues music
He styled his play after his Jimi Hendrix mixing blues with rock. His sound is unique because just like Jimi Hendrix he uses large guitar strings. Did you know he can't read guitar string notes? He plays by ear. He tells his band mates to just watch him and adjust to the way he playing because he doesn't know how he was going to play the song on concert night. Yup! What you said!!❤❤
This is originally a Jimi Hendrix song but no one can cover it like SRV! RIP SRV!
The man is second to none .I may be bias because he's from the Dallas/ Fort Worth area Oakcliff Tx aka South Dallas.
BB King said, “When I play I have to think about what I’m going to play.. and I play in sentences. But Stevie ain’t like that, when Stevie plays, he don’t have to thing at all.. and he plays in paragraphs.”
SRV is absolutely incredible, SRV live is off the charts. Speaking of SRV live, hit up "Texas Flood " next
.
He is strumming the strings muted and oscillating back and forth on the wah wah pedal with his foot. That's how he is making that sound.
Okay, so in the part of his early solo, there it looks like he's "dry humping the guitar". No, he has a pedal that is cutting in some effect. I can hear that there's a pitch bend going on too, but that must be Stevie relaxing a bent string. I'm not sure. The wicki-wacka scratchy tone that he does in the beginning is done with a Wah pedal.
It's always fun to watch people lose their Vaughanginity!
Next MUST be his version of Texas Flood live at El Mocambo!!!
You are not ready!
Vaughanginity?! Too funny!
I'm sure it's been mentioned a lot below, but Texas Flood at El Mocambo is a must.
blues and rock
You should check out the music video, Tuff Enuff by Stevie's brother, Jimmy Ray Vaughn.
Yeah he took the Guitar down dirty gritty and muddy
A cool reaction video, how about doing a reaction video to the Irish guitar legend Rory Gallagher - Laundromat live at Montreux 1975. Rory Gallagher is considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time, he put on a very high energy show with some amazing guitar playing. Rory Gallagher sold over 30 million albums thru the 1970's, a great music rabbit hole to go down. Thank you!
There's another guitarist who was also very creative and innovative much like Stevie Ray and his name is Rory Gallagher, from Ireland. Trying to figure out who was better is like trying to pick a broken nose, almost impossible!
This song is a cover of the Jimi Hendrix song, Voodoo Child; another great guitarist taken way too early. Jimi is surely grinning every time this song is played.
"Whammy Board" is what his feet are controlling
His Brother Jimmy played with the Fabulous Thurderbirds
Check out good enough.
Got the Texas Gritt to but not Stevie yet Jimmy holds his own. They keep it real Texas
The Ray Vaughn museum in Arlington Texas. Got to see it
To me the greatest there ever was.
When Stevie Ray Vaughan passed away. His Jimmy tried to take over, which he didn’t do as well as Stevie.
SRV shook an audience members hand while playing this song and didn't miss a note
Welcome to our Texas pride and joy 😅😅😅
LIVE!!!!!!! ALWAYS LIVE!!!!!!!!!!
I highly recommend "Look At Little Sister" by SRV and Jeff Healey.
This is Hendrix's Acid Rock, as close to the real deal as you are likely to get. Stevie's playing through Hendrix's wha-wha pedal.
He can make a guitar talk he can make a guitar cry he can make a guitar Howell he can make a guitar scream
