Does Baptism Wash Away Our Sins?

  • In this episode, Dr. Betters answers the question, "After our sins are washed away in baptism why do we all seem to be punished for sins we committed before coming to Christ? I traditionally tell people that what they are seeing isn't punishment it's actually part of suffering like what Paul went through after he done many of those same things to Christian's which was done to him. Jesus said come let me show you how much you must suffer. I tell them punishment for sin is hell nothing more nothing less. For sins after coming to faith in Christ we get chastening which hurts but again is not punishment or wrath. Am I correct or did I run in vain on that subject."

I love how when people go on about their beliefs they don’t give verse to pin point exactly their method of thought. Most specifically this “public profession idea” in relation to baptism. I’d really like to understand. And not just saved by faith talk because faith is mandatory for baptism, one wouldn’t make it to the water anyway if they never believed the Gospel.

Baptismal regeneration is biblical (John 3:5; Romans 6:1-10, etc.) but historical as well. In fact, baptismal regeneration wasn't challenged until some of the reformers came along.
"First of all, it admonishes us to remember that we have received baptism for the remission of sins in the name of God the Father, and in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who became incarnate and died and was raised, and in the Holy Spirit of God; and that this baptism is the seal of eternal life and is rebirth onto God, that we be no more children of mortal men, but of the eternal and everlasting God.
    - Irenaeus of Lyons [d. 202 AD], "Proof of Apostolic Preaching".

Of course Baptism doesn't wash away our sins. The blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanses us from all sin. Christ made atonement towards God with His blood, and God reaches out in Grace to us and applies the effect to us by faith. Baptism is when we reckon ourselves to be dead to sin and alive unto God in Christ Jesus. Romans ch. 6. It is the outward showing of an inward faith.

Dr Betters. I don't totally disagree with you but what about passages like Acts 2: 38. As well as others.. or the ethiopian eunuch who was baptized on the road by stephen. I'm confused because it clearly says that they must be baptized. Thank you

Eastern Christianity states that Baptism washes away the Sin of Adam for faulting and getting casted out of the Garden of Eden, however, it does not say that it washes away the sins that we commit there after except through Blood of Christ. Please respond thank you

In a manner of speaking that is correct. In Baptism the child of God is declaring that the man after Adam is dead and buried and that they are no longer living but Christ is living in us. It is Christ who is alive from the dead and living in the power of resurrection Life and by faith we are a new creation 'in Christ Jesus'. (Galatians ch. 2 v 20; Romans ch. 6; 2 Corinthians ch. 5).

A Dr. of Theology and not of the Bible. Literally what he said is nowhere in scripture that it is a symbol or only a confession of faith. A OSAS teacher at that. Smh
