What a fantastic collection of books you got for £2. I've always loved collecting secondhand books and I was lucky enough to buy a bookshop with my husband three years ago. We sell new and secondhand books but the trouble is my own collection is now getting even bigger because I keep seeing books I want when people bring in the books they no longer wish to keep or, sadly, collections from a deceased relative.

How fabulous to have your own bookshop; it sounds delightful! I am sure that would be my problem if I ever had a bookshop - most of the stock would end up on my shelves!! When I worked in Persephone books, I spent a large part of my pay on the books 😂 xxx

Today it was a vintage copy of a Few Green Leaves by Barbara Pym.
I really enjoy your vlogs, thank you.

I'm so happy to have found your channel. I adore vintage everything and you have found some treasures there. I like hardcovers so had a look for the hardcover of Period Piece. I found one online for the bargain price of $1,138 Australian dollars! I think I may have to stick with the paperback! There are cheaper ones than that, of course, but postage is always the problem to Australia. I collect those childrens' Puffins as well - they are so special.

Your post made me nostalgic for all the books I read as a child. I forgot about "The Borrowers" books. I remember getting them at my elementary school library (which was my favorite place at school) and being enchanted by them. A country fair in the English countryside sounds idyllic to this New Yorker!

Lovely video as always Miranda - I'm still in awe of your GBP2.00 haul! Treasures! 😂
I do like a secondhand book rummage, though I rarely have a chance to engage in book hunts as opportunities to buy secondhard books in Hong Kong are limited...and the prices are often not exactly a 'bargain'! 😂
I will also occasionally buy vintage books. My most recent purchases include a copy of The Beautiful Visit by Elizabeth Jane Howard and The Correspondence of Andre Gide and Edmund Gosse edited by Brugmans, both from the 1950s. Earlier in the year, I also splurged on a six-volume collection of 1950s pocket editions of EM Forster works - but that's the type of purchase that only happens once in a very rare while! 😅😅
Look forward to seeing more of your secondhand and vintage buys if you decide to share more in the future. 😊😊

Such charming finds! I love playing detective in brick-and-mortar, second-hand bookshops. I must admit I do it a lot less often now that Abebooks is at my fingertips. Autumn seems like the perfect season to curl up with nostalgia, a childhood book and a cup of tea. Or cider. The Puffin books are sweet. My stack of recent Abe purchases is right by my feet. Uttley's The Country Child is on top, and I'm just now realizing that it is a Puffin edition. Happy coincidence! I love the front-to-back artwork. I can see why the Puffins appeal to collectors. This was great fun, thank you.

Thank you for another interesting vlog Miranda. I do look forward to these. There's a short story by Margaret J Baker called 'We didn't mean to fly' about three children who realise one morning that they can fly, and about 24 hours later realise that they no longer have this power. There's no particular drama about the acquisition and then loss of this wonderful ability, but they do have a bit of an adventure while they still have the gift, which they wouldn't have had without it. It's a delightful story, one of five in a book called The Young Magicians, the (in my opinion) gorgeous cover of which depicts one of the children flying. Am planning to read more by MJB.

Oh this was really wonderful. What an amazing trove of books from the village fete. That particular edition of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe was the exact one I had as a little girl. Book covers are so important, especially to children I think. I remember poring over the covers of all my books and searching out all the little details. If you like Gerald Durrel's writing you might like his "The Donkey Rustlers" which I absolutely lived as a child and nought recently as a vintage copy. I greatly enjiy vintage books (as long as they are clean! And not musty smelling), I recently found a wonderful 2003 Folio edition of The Once and Future King trilogy by TH White; The Sword in The Stone being one of my all time favourite books. It has wonderful illustrations by John Lawrence and I am so thrilled to have it. Thank you for such an enjoyable bookish video Miranda. X

What great finds, you remind me that I must step over my lingering Covid fears to better second hand bookshops further afield. I am a new subscriber and supporter, so enjoying working through your archive, and following up on your terrific reading ideas, including subscribing to The Scribbler. I wanted to highlight that the British Library classics are on 3 for 2 offer at the BL shop. I look forward to the next Comfort Bookclub.

I have the same edition of the Oscar Wilde stories and like you, The Selfish Giant was my favourite of the collection and always made me cry ...
I received The Magician’s Nephew by CS Lewis in the same vintage edition as a prize for high marks in elocution when I was about 8 or 9!!
What a great haul you got at the village fair!

Unseen childhoods sounds fascinating. Heidi and Pollyanna have disability in them too and came to mind . One of the Pollyanna sequels actually addresses very well a friend of Pollyanna’s who needs assistance walking and how he wishes to be independent and not pitied. The Selfish Giant is such a beautiful story.

I was just reading about The Winter Princess in Grayladies Scribbler vol. 15 and thought it looked like a sweet story. Also that little witch book looks adorable! Books about witches are my addiction.

I remembered it was reviewed in The Scribbler too, which made me even more pleased to stumble across it! xxx

Miranda, have you ever read Tapioca for Tea by Sarah Shears ? My grandma gave it to me as a child as an avid reader and I have just got another copy x

Funnily enough I was just asked this question the other day too. I haven't, but my Mum has and she enjoyed it! xxx
