Lyrics --------- Flow, my tears, fall from your springs! Exiled for ever, let me mourn; Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings, There let me live forlorn. Down vain lights, shine you no more! No nights are dark enough for those That in despair their lost fortunes deplore. Light doth but shame disclose. Never may my woes be relieved, Since pity is fled; And tears and sighs and groans my weary days Of all joys have deprived. From the highest spire of contentment My fortune is thrown; And fear and grief and pain for my deserts Are my hopes, since hope is gone. Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell, Learn to contemn light Happy, happy they that in hell Feel not the world's despite.
@@riftmanhun5243 I get you. It is not much better even if your command of the language is decent. However, knowing the text one has to admit: Mr. De Ryke actually sings it quite clearly. Coming back to the original comment: Thank you!
@@riftmanhun5243 i feel the same reading william blake's poems, even though I have a very good understanding of the language. Something feels eerie about the way he wrote, but to be fair, its hard for native english speakers to understand him as well. Poets like him and percy byshee shelly feels like a world prize when I am finally able to interpret their poems, it takes a lot of fucking effort. Such profound kind of art is not meant to be translated, cause so much power is lost during the transcription. They are meant to be experienced as they are (although I think they were somewhat transcribed from the arcaic anglo-saxon language to the more modernized english, don't know for sure). But john dowland (and henry purcell for that matter) communicate very intimately with my soul. Their words cut deeply into my heart, like there, they were always etched. To me, there is something very magical, though solemn, about their pieces.
The song of overwhelming sorrow & grief..a 17th century classic! The extreme heartfelt emotion & perfection of this performance has brought me to tears! So delicate yet so forceful the message. How grateful I am to Ryan de Ryke (vocals) and Brandon Acker (lute) for sharing their gifts!.I myself am compelled to action and must pray for all those (today) enduring Hell on earth (news).
I like the deeper tone of the baritone as opposed to the usual higher pitch vocals done for this song. It's a shame he didn't also have the deeper sounding Theorbo at this time to properly accompany these dark vocals.
I'm using this video as the example of Renaissance Lute Songs for my college Music Appreciation classes today. Incredible musicianship from both. Absolutely superb.
I love this song; I've been looking for a good recording of it and this is not only better than anything on Spotify, it's the best recording/performance of it I've heard. amazing
Stellar performance! I love classical music, but have never heard this piece before. What a beautiful melody. Brandon, great work on the lute. Ryan, your voice is spectacular! The rich baritone sound is excellent and what a great place to bring out the best in the acoustics. Nice job on the videography, as well Daria! Bravo! Best, -Rock
Thank you so much to Ryan de Ryke (vocals) and Brandon Acker (lute) for this precious performance. It's like honoring the memory of my beloved mom (I lost her just three months ago).💖
Exquisite beauty here. What an amazing performance!! Brandon and Ryan, you are a wonderful team and it was perfect. I have goosebumps!! Brandon, I found your channel through "RockRulz". I have subscribed! ~Jackie

Why is the singer sitting dooooown! This piece requires so much support through long lines, and sitting down puts pressure on your diaphragm, hampering your breath control!
Diferent times, other aesthetics. I think, this music was originaly meant to be played in smaller/private places. So the singer would not need to project the voice as would be supposed to do in a sec.XIX/XX concert hall. I think he is sitting down to have better connection with the lute, like a chamber music formation. (sorry my english, not a native) best regards!
99% correct. Oud is fretless. What looks like frets on the neck of the lute is tied strings, which can be angled to suit the player or key, so they function as frets. And there are frets on the body that are fixed, if you look very closely. I too, am filled with curiosity, so I research as much as possible
Dear Brandon Acker, Beautiful performance and recording (except for the distortion at 3:14). As a recording engineer, you should always note the recording venue. Where was this recorded?
The performance is stellar. But the camerawork is... unintelligible. I can see the person who did it had a plan and put in effort. but could use a little more practice.
Are you really Steve Buscemi? Are you sure? And no, you're probably not talking about me anyway. But if Steve Buscemi asked me to cut my nails, I would. But then I'm not a lutenist.
Huch! Du machst ein sehr gutes Argument, aber es war ein wunderschöner Raum, der verfügbar war, als wir ihn brauchten! Wir haben das Beste mit dem gemacht, was wir hatten. :)

this shit is lit af
I wonder what would John Dowland think if he knew that we consider his music "lit af"?
He'd be flattered mate!
hahaha it's a 21st century compliment so, he would be pleased =)
I have no idea what you are all talking about, so whether you liked it or not, this conversation is interesting! Thanks for that!

Divine singing.
Thank you, Robertson. It's a good life to sing such beautiful music, and your kind words are very touching.
Yes.
I have just started having singing lessons and this is one of the songs I have to learn. Very well sang pal you totally nailed it.

beautiful lute playing.
This is my favorite performance of this piece. I return here often to listen again. Beautiful job!

The strength and presence of his overtones, especially on sounds like oh and oo, is absolutely astonishing.

This is truly a splendid rendition of this song.
Far and away the best version of this song that I have heard. Thank you
An exceptionally beautiful, and well-trained, baritone voice.
Honestly this the definition of goals

If you could perform also "Come heavy sleep" by Dowland, it would be the greatest gift!
Love this performance! Very involved and expressive. Thank you!

More vibrato than I would’ve liked but it still sounds pretty good. It’s a beautiful song. No wonder it was so popular in its day.

Sublime. Just an observation, those lyrics would not be out of place in a Death Metal song!
