The Lachrimae Pavan on Lute
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 июн 2021
- The famous Lachrimae Pavan performed here on the instrument for which it was written, the Renaissance Lute. First published around 1595 in England. Here I'm playing from the Jane Pickering manuscript but have added some nice ideas from other English manuscripts. Composer: John Dowland (1563-1626).

Hi. Would there be a possibility to make a score only version of this piece?
I love watching him play these pieces, i know he heard them when they first came out so i know its accurate
I heard he regularly drives his Dolorian at clocktowers.
😂
His ornaments whatever he playes are just so beautiful and perfect. Im pretty sure he did not even heared it back then he played some of this tunes on his own, I would like to hear some old tunes from Turlough O'Carolan from him. Even if this was harpmusic im sure that it will be played from heaven if he gets his hand on this beautiful irish melodys 🥰
He's probably Sir John Dowland himself mixing in amongst us mere mortals under an alias.

I don’t know what is more tasteful, the playing or the slick hairstyle
Beautifully performed! ☀️🎸
Thanks, Marco!
My father is a lute maker. We live far from each other now. So hearing you play makes me feel closer to home.
my man Brandon getting that slick FLESH TONE
Damn that's beautiful, wish the lute hadn't fallen out of style. would be amazing to see people playing it more often.
The lute still kinda lives on through the guitar if you think about it.
It evolved it still lives in guitar in soo many ways
@thereisnochoiceleft well yes but I think with time music evolved and so did the instruments. Guitars are liked more so they are cheap and where I live no one even knows what lute it and is impossible to find
@@K-Viz Its so much sweeter of a sound than a guitar, in my mind.
Lutes should have a revival. Banjos are also popular these days, but they sound twangier and harsher than a lute.
So much music today is so loud and about making noise.
Unfortunately culture has fallen out of stye...
What a godlike instrument. It is like the harpsichord of guitars; a very baroque -sounding piece. It’s like a tune one would hear in a medieval tavern. Very good job on this piece.
Sorry to be pedantic but wouldn’t it be a baroque tavern?
@@saoirsecameron Here comes a 2nd pedantic person: it would actually be a renaissance tavern, my good sir! lol
@@mikemodano863 a 3rd one: he's not playing with a right hand thumb under technique which was in use during the renaissance. Quite strange 🤔
@@kraftwerk974 He is, watch him do the fast movements between chords.
The Theorbo is even more godlike. Hearing the lutenist hit those open bass strings gives a feeling of power unlike anything else except for when I pull the Bourdon stop on the pipe organ.
Guy's been using this song as an example for ages now, and just now we hear it in its ultimate form. I know he's inmortal, but he really likes to take his time for this kind of stuff.
The lute makes the Pavan sound authentic and you made the lute sound amazing
I just realized this is the solo lute version of Fall My Tears.
Man? How is this guy even real? Man he's so talented!! Love it
I wish someone would look at me the way Brandon looks at his music at 1:38
Unknown fact: Vampires can, as shown in that timestamp, literally see the soundwaves float in front of them.
John Dowland, what a giant in his time and ours. The lute touches my soul like no other instrument. I played violin, yet wishing for the lute. Nothing else calms the soul as well.
oh i have so waited for this piece after the Lute v/s classical guitar video. Thank you for uploading

Brandon where is your twin brother 🤔🤔🤔
Thank you as always Brandon for making me feel connected to the culture of humans who lived nearly 500yrs ago🙏 It's truly beautiful, and carries the same power that I'm sure it did way back when. Thank you❤
This is just sounding so good. There's always been something about the sound of the lute for me, can't say exactly what, but just love it. It's like a "living" piece of history, you can recreate the sounds and feelings from an era long gone and that amazes me. Thank you for another amazing performance!
OH MY GOD PLEASE RELASE ON SPOTIFY.
Brandon's playing both inspires me to practice more, but at the same time, is so unattainable that it makes me want to quit!
Here's another example of His flawless technique!
How can it be unattainable if he attained it brah
@@Julez67 He's hundreds of years of practice ahead of us atm

Thanks, once again, for a beautiful rendering of such a wonderful piece of music. You have phrased it with great finesse.
What a beautiful instrument, both its look and the sounds it makes. And what a gorgeous composition to show of its marvelous range.
Please do the oud next 🙏
This is the best version I have ever heard ❤
Amazing performance!
Out of the topic but dude you really inspire me to keep playing guitar and improve technically. Such clean playing!
Totally on topic, dude! Playing music is the next level of enjoying music, it makes you enjoy performers like Brandon even more. I have never met a musician who wouldn’t encourage and try to inspire other players, whatever their level.
I've been waiting for this. Sounds so nice when Brandon plays it.
Thank you Mr. Brandon Acker, for the music. Wonderful interpretation.✨🎸✨
Hauntingly beautiful rendition, thank you!
Five blissful minutes. And that ending!
You are really a fantastic artist Brandon !!
thank you
Anytime I lack motivation to play I am coming to your channel..always blown away
Beautiful music very well played. Thank you!
Incredibly tasteful playing! So beautiful!
A magical journey!
Bravo!
Thank you for this peaceful moment.
Wow! I heard this beautiful piece of music for the first time, yesterday, in your "Showdown" video, and have since listened to a few other performances thereof. Yours, however, takes the cake! Exquisitely played, Brandon. Bravo and thank you.
Amazing as always, Sir! Thank you
Such a magical instrument.
Underrated
It needs atleast one million views
Preciosa versión de Acker de esta joya de Dowland, que bien adorna y entreteje la melodía con luminosa transparencia.
Hauntingly beautiful!!
Stunning Sir, absoutely mesmerizing.
Absolutely amazing
Beautiful. Awesome!
Absolute bliss
“Semper Dowland, semper dolens”… Semper Acker, semper magnum 👏👏👏👏
One of my favourite medieval/baroque songs
Thank you, Brandon! :)
That was magnificent!
Beautiful!
All the Dowland pieces brilliant.
A very good thing about the arts is that we don't have to decide which piece is more beautiful, for example Brandon's recording of this music on lute or on gut string guitar.
Beautiful.
Your videos make me want to buy a lute
That is one great rendition
Lindíssima interpretação, meus parabéns!
Beautifully played!
Thanks, Samuel! :)
sometimes you cant click away from hearing something this beautiful
OoooOoOooOOOOOoh oh my gooood I played that !!!!!!!!!! OMG this is so much better but yeah I'm so excited to listen it but well played !!!!! Thank you so much !!!
Idk what to say other than absolutely fantastic
Wonderful!
Pure genious!
Oh, I need to get one of those. Sounds so rich.
So incredible perfect! Your comparisation video was okay, but this is just played to perfection! I hope we’ll find this in your shop soon!
Down vain lights, shine you no more!

The first music recording I ever purchased was an 8 track tape by Andres Segovia on guitar that included this piece. Mr Acker is just as accomplished
That is very, very, very good.
Beautiful 😍
Very well played
Your performance was so inspiring, that, in a parallel universe, I'd love nothing more to quit my job, acquire a lute and go down the path of mastering the instrument like you did. Such a beautiful piece, holy moly.
Well, you don’t have to quit your job or anything. Just get the instrument you can afford (did you hear the guitar version? you can get a guitar for almost nothing these days) and put in the time you can spare. Sure, to become a professional you need to spend endless hours, but you can enjoy playing music from a very basic level. The start may be frustrating, but let me tell you a secret: the frustration stays, you will always want to be better. But the joy is there from the beginning and it also stays, especially once you start playing with other people.
@@Veronica_needssleep Well, thanks for taking my comment way too seriously by not getting the humour behind it and also telling a really old "secret", I guess. I just wanted to celebrate Brandon's performance. Nothing more. Nothing less. I'm a musician myself but not at all familiar with playing the lute, which is quite a delicate instrument to learn and let alone master. That's all. If I started to learn another instrument besides working, there would be zero progress in that (given the time I want to spend on my other instruments, too).
It's nothing new that to become a real professional in whatever there is you need to really focus on that (better still, from as early as possible) which I just can't, because I don't have 72 hours a day - also a life, obligations and bills to pay (besides, I guess a lot of other people also can't do that just because, like me, they lack confidence in their skill or they, just never had the opportunity to earn their living with music (which is hard enough - even for the masters - these days). Some people have this lucky opportunity, some don't. And my heart is full of joy for those who can not just play but live through music. But yes, I do agree that the joy of playing music always overshadows the frustration. Just like enjoying others play. (But I personally don't enjoy commenting strangers commenting comments by other strangers they don't even know.)
Exquisite.......kudos !
That performance represents lots of study on an instrument with unusual tuning. Thanks for putting in the effort and producing that gem. Your videos are great.
Great ideas and execution. Bravo! In such a repertoire, it may be interesting "Neusidler Hans - Hie folget ein welscher tanz wascha mesa".
Beautiful piece, beautifully played. I have an 8-course renaissance lute at home, but unfortunately never got really proficient with it. I would like to learn the instrument - I know about Sarge Gerbode's lute page, so it's not for a lack of material, but rather a lack of direction. Brandon, could you maybe suggest a progression of pieces to learn that could be taken up by a beginner on the instrument, and maybe allow a path to a more intermediate level?
I also play the 8-course Renaissance lute (alas, the level is not where I want it to be...) but if you want to get better I think that Pascale Boquet's method (in French, but not really a problem as it's more a progression of pieces than an in-depth method) Méthode de Luth Renaissance, by Pascale Boquet. Paris, 1985. 224 pages. Price : 30 € / 35 € (FR + 5 €) (EU + 9 €) - you can get that at the Societé francaise de luth here www.sf-luth.org/eng/?Musical_Publications/Le_Secret_des_Muses
Also Sarge's page is wonderful. I recommend Arto Wikla too if you have theorbo or baroque lute envy but for lack of funds would like to play baroque pieces on your 8-course instrument.
@@helendecruz1947 Thank you for the directions! I'll look into the materials. The french book looks very interesting. The lute is such a mesmerising instrument, and with such a wealth of music written for it, it feels like going on an adventure. :)
Er, ditto, from first to last word! I also have an 8-course renaissance lute, albeit mine is currently and to my shame sitting in the roof for someone to play it. I can play it only in very pre-mediocre sort of way, Sarge Gerbode's lute page -- yes and also inspired by this magnificent performance to ask the same question of Brandon.
I wonder how many more of us there are in hiding!
@@helendecruz1947 And thank you from me too, Helen!
So cool

Thanks so much, Eugenie!
Amazing performance! I wanna hear your performance on The Frog Galliard as well!
I brought proof on Brandon being a vampire:
1. Immortality: Long hair, thin skin and an extraordinary appetite for classical music
2. Avoids sunlight: Palid but still handsome
3. Apathic staring: 0:19
would you let him drink your blood though?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Also, insomniac
Maybe he’s good at this genre because he was alive during that time…
That's not apathy but rather its opposite
So beautiful 😍
Wow 👌 👏
Without looking at the instrument, very good.
I'm kind of surprised you didn't already have a video of you playing this jam
This is going in the rotation alongside Rob Mackillop's interpretation :)
This is beautiful. I started loving Lute when I heard it in Skyrim first. Can you please take a request? I'd be thrilled to see you play The Bannered Mare!
Much appreciation,
P
It sounds devine in my sound box
Very nice. You performed this piece on classical guitar as well. How in the world did you play them both to the exact same length? Both are right at 4:55 seconds in length to the final chord. Impressive.
Oh I had no idea! It wasn't on purpose 😆
I love that you moved to play with skin. I like the sound so much better than nail.
I like your wall colors
Wonderful as always!
Will you ever play Gran Vals? I know I would love your performance.
_Floow my tearsss, fall from your springs

Bello
The Lute really sings!
hey it'd be cool to hear one of the cantigas de santa maria or carmina burana songs on this
P.S
They made an exception, because, as I wrote, the Festival is specialised on Baroque Musik, to let him play Dowland with an Catalonian Lady singing.
Very good indeed, I like the authentic hand position closer to the bridge than most modern players dare to use. Are the basses over-spun or loaded?
I'm glad to hear someone else likes it. Everyone plays on the rose these days even in Baroque music strangely.
The basses are Aquila loaded and they sound great.
I've been infected with the lute virus since a few days and keep looking at the Le Luth Doré lutes, hoping they restock soon and someone magically sends me the money to buy one. This does not help haha.

You could always buy a Roosebeck, they are good for entry level and decently cheap. Good enough for learning and for small recitals, but definitely not pro-level.
