Pretty much everything he did was wrong. These homemade katas are nice baton-twirling shows, but in combat...he'd be missing a limb within the first 3 seconds...

why did he always hit the tsuba against the saya while performing Noto? why is there a "neko ashi dashi" at the mid of the kata?, is he "twirling towards freedom" at the mid of the kata with open arms, why? is he doing shiko dashi from shoto kan or from shito ryu? why did he hit his hakama so hard before returning to seiza?. This video is kind of confusing because at some point it shows certain degree of technique and at some points it seems like "America-Do-Te", like some comments before is this serious? is this karate? is this taekwondo? is this kobudo? is this iaido? how should i see this video?
I was appalled when I saw all that twirling. In real combat, it would be a liability. Oh well, if it's for entertainment or something other than self-defense then I guess it would be acceptable. Personally though, I wouldn't do a lot of these moves since they leave him too vulnerable to attacks. I'd say he also needs to work on his noto because it snags and it's way too noisy. I'd recommend practicing with a steel iaito since he looks like he's using an aluminum katana. The hakama he's wearing is also a liability and I hope it doesn't cause an unfortunate accident.

@@explorermike19 I think I saw something like this on something called Extreme Martial Arts or something like that. It clearly isn't geared towards self-defense though. I think the contestants were evaluated for snazzy showmanship. Oh well, to each their own. I still hope this isn't marketed as something for self-defense otherwise it would be misleading and very dangerous. I also think the dude in this video should consider getting a shorter hakama. One mistake and he could skewer himself even if the blade is not a shinken.

People swinging weapons around like they probably saw in movies or anime, often done to loud music and exasperated with loud and frequent shouting. To folks actually trained in the weapon, it is a little embarrassing to watch and difficult as a judge.

Most of his cuts have wrong edge aligments (otherwise we could hear its sound - only a few cuts had that unique sound the blade makes). his moves are not powerfule at all. fast as this replica sword is light so he is able to move it fast thus hiding the mistakes too. I practice Battojutsu btw with real katana
@@Bevallalom Well said! In addition to what you observed, I also noticed a snag with his nukitsuke (1:04 to 1:08). I wonder how well he would perform with tameshigiri. As mentioned in other comments, I also hope he shortens his hakama. Tripping can be disastrous especially if he decides to use a shinken. At any rate, I have to admit it provides a lot of entertainment value so I guess it's all good in the end. Even I am admittedly guilty of practicing bullshido with a shinken. Since all my shinken are tachis, I practice things like spin sheathing with the blade down. Of course, I started with my heavy steel jintachi iaito before I started using my different tachi shinkens.

Not really a traditional or practical katana form but if you are still wanting to practice it despite knowing that, I say go for it. Only feedback I can give to your form is that you flow too much between strikes. Strikes should be explosive and the kata should feel like a series of explosions going off rather than flowing like waves.

From a Iaido student of six years and having trained in Japan. Fun to look at but there are no Kiai ( shouting) in Iaido. You want to hear the sword swish. It is the sign of a proper quick-draw. The main error here that many beginners make is not pulling back the saya as you pull out the sword. It is a counter movement essential in the flow and balance of the sword strike. But hey, have fun and keep practicing.
The reality is a sword and 7-inch battle use is just a tool nowadays. If one wants to use a sword or battle knife you are most certainly gonna get shot with a rifle or a pistol. A sword or battle knife can certainly kill and do damage but it's a weapon of surprise. In the surprising role, the sword and knife are secondary silent killers with firearms being primary.
One could suppose that it's a VERY particular style. I mean, like something elaborated at home... If ever the guy has received a koryu education, he is a embarassment to his school.
I watched this video since I've today(March 26, 2022 at 9:30-about 1:30) went to tournament in American Open Karate. I had won 1st place against a separate school and as a prize I was given a katana. Since my school doesn't have katana's or swords's in the manuel I've clicked on this video to import one into it. So thank you for the(if I am correct) traditional shotakon kata.
