The launch PS3 was the most ambitious console ever built in my opinion. Played PS1, PS2, PS3 games. Built in Blu-Ray player. Built in web browser. Built in multi media card reader. Worked in relation with the PSP. Could transfer and save photos videos to the HDD or connect to a printer. The only reason it did not sell was due to the high price. With the CELL processor the PS3 was the most powerful console built up to that time. CELL was also one of the reasons why the PS3 was so expensive with so much capital in R&D at Sony. CELL was also why some companies did not want to develop games for the PS3. Developers wanted to keep using the same methods they were using on the 6th generation of consoles. PS3 made them learn new methods to develop games for and some companies did not want to do that. Once those companies started to learn the CELL architecture the games were really done well. The same time Sony released the PS3 slim a lower cost to manufacturer an thus a lower cost for customers. Then the PS3 took off on the sales numbers. I still do not know if Sony ever made a profit off of PS3.

They should re-release it with proper cooling, 45nm RSX/CELL chips that were used on the slims, higher quality capacitors and update the XMB to support 2TB internal SSDs.
This time, a fair price would be $150 as the hardware is ancient.

Dude, you ain't kidding. Everything from then on was off the shelf crap and PlayStation games look just like Xbox games. Xbox 360 couldnt rival Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII that looked like trash on Xbox 360, Uncharted and The Last of Us. PlayStation 3 could've done Gears of War, no problem, except it wouldn't have had screen tearing. But yeah, innovative hardware is dead and sadly we've gone to today's bull crap where Xbox can keep up with PlayStation now. You're among the VERY rare few that recognize this, wow! There's not many that appreciate the PS3 hardware such as yourself. Rock on, brutha

Tbh, PS3 felt more futuristic than even ps4 and 5.
I actually liked the font, the original boomerang actually looked very comfortable. Most people haven't seen the pictures of it in hands, i wish it was the standard.
It felt like ps3 actually tried to get into the fps genre with killzone and resistance. They're still absent in the genre today

Resistance Fall of Man was an amazing game. The series is fantastic, with a hole in the FPS market, I feel like now would be a great time for Sony to bring the series back from slumber. Make the story epic and the multiplayer addictive with large battles, a ton of character customization (especially for the chimera), etc!

Hey Ryan - it was so satisfying to see you share this time capsule for PS3. I think this 2006-07 was truly the golden age of video games and TV entertainment. Everyone I knew had a PS3 and TiVo and was watching Blu Ray on their PS3 and doing Wii Sports bowling on their Wii. I miss this time a lot. Love the $70 gold plated HDMI cables, you were so right that this was the real upsell whenever you walked into GameStop or BestBuy.

I grew up on ps1 & ps2 as a kid but when 2006 rolled around and I entered High School, I was a complete derelict and unfortunately stopped gaming for quite a while. So, this was cool because I never experienced any of Sony's marketing for ps3 or games when they first came out.

    • @Mogura87
      @Mogura87 Год назад

You didn't miss much, to be quite honest. The PS3 in the early years especially were unequivocally a massive step-down from the PS2. In fact it was so disastrous that even a PlayStation staple like the JRPG genre was better represented on the Xbox 360. I used my 60 GB model more to play swan song era PS2 games and PS1 games on the early HD LCDs. Now, as Mystic also pointed out, the PS3 as an all-in-one entertainment machine, including the awesome back-compat feature and blu-ray support, was very much appreciated. It's just that the thing almost literally had no games.

I loved this era. I got a PS3 in 2007 here in Europe and honestly it was my favorite console growing up. I was definitely disappointed with the lineup early on especially having sold my 360 for a PS3 but in the end it was all worth it. Within a couple of years you had massive games come out. It definitely took Sony a couple of years or so but they eventually caught up to Xbox in terms of lineups.

The PS3 was always mysterious to me, growing up. Had a neighbor friend who’s family had a Fat PS3. I think the rule was that nobody was allowed to touch or move it. It wasn’t a Backwards compatible model, so I remember feeling pretty “meh” about it. They always had kidsy games. Like Cars and Lego Indiana Jones. They thought SpongeBob was inappropriate. We had 360 and Halo and GC and Wii and PS2 and plenty of Battlefront and Godzilla games at my place, which was definitely better. He had an uncle who was a total fanboy(backwards hat, like a total Viewtiful Joe lookalike) and called Halo, “Galo”. I wasn’t even mad; I was taken aback that an adult could joke like that. It was a different time back then. I remember his father got mad and grabbed him by the head for some reason. Didn’t see much of him after that. They eventually moved out eventually. He was a good friend. I have a BC fat PS3 and think about him now. So glad I’m not playing games like Cars or Lego 3rd party whatevers.

PS3 was very much a big multimedia machine for me, so too was the PSP, the XMB’s utility was amazing. Part of my frustration/disappointment with PS4 was how much it ditched all that for a barebones machine, it didn’t even have a media remote at launch. And unlike the Vita, PS4 didn’t have much new/innovative features and inputs to make up for it, till the PSVR came. PS5 at least pushes things forward with the Dual Sense and SSD, PS4 will always feel like the most iterative/barebones generational leap for PlayStation.

I'm really disappointed and sad that these days no longer exist where consoles are sold for very little because they are outdated.
Back then, this was done with SNES, PS1, Saturn, Mega Drive, etc. even with the PS2 and GameCube especially.
Now that you are older and finally have enough money to take advantage of such offers and want to buy some consoles, such offers no longer exist.
I remember I wanted to stock up on PS360 stuff. Unfortunately the prices were never so low that it was worth it and suddenly the things were out of the shops, replaced by PS4one.
I wonder what they did with the stuff. definitely shipped to developing countries to be sold there. Brazil or South America is a popular destination. You could get new PS2 consoles and games there for a very long time.

I love collecting "game paper".. Every time I went to a retail store I'd always grab a few of each system's catalogs and pamphlets. This is something I have been doing since the NES days. Those huge NES GAME PLAN posters used to be given away at a few places here in NY. I'd wallpaper my room with them. Seriously. I have pictures of them all over my bedroom. :) I'd also call many of the 3rd party companies (Nintendo thoughtfully listed all of their 3rd party licensees, along with their phone numbers in a pre-Nintendo Power listing. Many of them would send me things. Tengen was really cool and they sent me a bunch of ATARI arcade flyers.. For Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, among others. SNK sent me a bunch as well (Athena, Iron Tank, Ikari Warriors, Ikari II, ASO, and that lead to them sending me a ton of amazing Neo•Geo stuff (and me buying an AES at launch in 1990.) Cool video BTW. I love original content like this. -MattH

Long post ahead, more power to it if you read it. TL;DR: Sweet PS3 nostalgia.
This right here is where, imo, Sony was at their peak. Sure, not in terms of hardware sales, but because they lost market leadership in the U.S., which at the time was the largest and most competitive market, they had their first-party and second-party studios working overtime on amazing exclusives. I didn't get one right at launch, which meant that I missed out on the 60 GB model, unfortunately, but I also didn't have a PS1 or PS2 growing up. As you might guess from my profile pic, I only had Nintendo consoles growing up, and one of the first things I did was use some of my HS graduation money gifted to me for an 80 GB PS3 as a second console and dedicated Blu-ray movie player. I remember my brother and I playing Warhawk religiously on it. Great times!

21:23 Small correction: the "55" gigabytes were actually 25, with dual layer discs coming in somewhere down the line holding 50. If you look really closely near the center hole of your game, you'll see one ring of barcode for the 25 GB discs, or an inner and then an outer ring of barcodes for dual layer 50 GB games.
With PS4, I believe all discs regardless of size were pressed to dual layer 50 GB discs, probably to streamline production and make it cheaper. A "waste" perhaps, but making exceptions costs more than the excess quality of the dual disc.

Managed to get my hands on another CECHC03 this month, might service it a bit and send it off to get the Frankenstein RSX mod

The PS3 was just incredible, its just a shame Sony seemed to be the only ones who cared about putting in the time to make games for it, or it would have been massive.

Recently bought a original PS3 with the backwards compatibility doesn't turn off so sending it off to get it repaired hopefully will have it up and running in a week

I was big into the 360 and only had a PS3 for MLB The Show. I since have gotten rid of all my Xbox stuff and just play on PlayStation and Switch. I love PS3 and it's great going back to this library I didn't experience.

@Mystic The PSP bundle I had was the original launch modele with the wired headphones with that attachment, a demo UMD, and I want to say that movie 'Lord's of Dogtown', a case, and the strap.
