Thank you very much, Ellen! I'm thrilled that the team enjoyed the video! It was a lot of fun to research all of these materials. I plan to release videos more frequently now - I think that you'll like the video that I'm working on next. It's got a healthy mix of creative coding, data visualization, science, Arduino, CNC, and laser cutting/engraving.
Wait let me get this right, you can't engrave metals like stainless steel, silver or gold with the glowforce (without the workarounds you mentioned like the spray or powder coating)?? That's a bummer. 😓 So that means the glowforce basically isn't really meant for engraving jewelry like stainless steel or silver bracelets /pendants etc?
@@ThatSocratesguy To really engrave metals directly like you mention you would need a much more powerful laser. The workaround is that you can coat the metal piece with some kind of paint and then use the laser to burn through the areas that you want engraved, and then put the metal into an acid bath that eats away at the metal where it is not covered by the paint.

Amazing video, full of great content! Great production value as well. If I may make a small piece of constructive criticism for future videos. Try to not let the music over power your dialogue. There are a few moments in your video where you get pretty drowned out by that music track! I''m looking forward to seeing more content on this channel!
Brent George Hi, Brent! Thanks so much for the kind words! Absolutely, I’ll keep the music volume in mind. I’m learning a lot with each new video - I’m in the middle of filming and editing a laser cut router template video now and already see things I’d like to improve for the next one. It’s funny... it took years to get good at woodworking - I’m not sure why i expected to be good at video stuff immediately. Ha! I do appreciate any honest feedback as it will make future content better.
Chesney Adventures Thanks so much! Absolutely - although you might want to put some of that paper masking on it so that you don’t get soot on your paint (blue painters tape also works in a pinch as long as you don’t overlap it). But I’d you do get soot on your paint, a magic eraser or mild soap and water usually works. Also, it goes without saying... you’d want to avoid anything with old lead paint on it. Ha! Thanks for watching!
This video and your google sheet is probably going to singlehandedly save me thousands of hours of setup. I see you mentioned evo foam. I googled it and most of the results are for eva foam. Do you happen to know if a laser does eva foam? Because if so, that greatly helps with cosplay.
What a great video.Very inspiring. I'm thinking of getting a Glowforge and am currently at the research stage. Could you, or any other Glowforge users, tell me if it would be any good for cutting camel bone knife scales?
Thanks! I'm pretty sure that they might engrave well. The bone sample at the end of the video engraved beautifully on the first try. I'd happy to try one out and mail it back to you if that helps. However, cutting the camel bone might be a bit more difficult. My first guess without researching it is that cutting would work better on the cnc machine (or just using a bandsaw with some sanding afterwards) and engraving afterwards using the Glowforge. The only thing is that bone dust isn't too good for you... you might need to wear a good respirator. It also smells pretty bad when being engraved.
This was awesome. I'm interested in your course when will it launch. I have a question about the canvas...was that a traditional canvas wrapped around wood? Did you take the canvas off the frame? I didn't think it would fit in the glowforge...too thick...
Thanks so much! I appreciate it. I didn't take the canvas off of the frame initially. You're right, it was too thick at first... so I removed the crumb tray and put a few pieces of wood under it to get it to the right height (using the no math tool). Also, we're inviting students to sign up for the course early (the full course will be launched in February 2022). Early backers get immediate access to the "unfinished course" - you'll see content as it's being uploaded to the course. Early backers also get a 1:1 tutoring session with me: glowforgeforbeginners.com/
Hi Tonia, thanks so much! Here is my own settings sheet: bit.ly/39LSmkK - you can also check out the community settings sheet: bit.ly/34fhe3d - I find it's good to keep your own based on your exact materials.
I usually order the cut pieces from SendCutSend.com as the Glowforge (or any other C02 laser) can't cut metal. It's easy, I just upload my vector file to their website, pay about $30 and get a ton of parts back in a few days. Once I get it back, I spray the stainless steel with Cermark Marking Spray and mark/engrave it in the Glowforge shortly after (300 speed; 100 power; 370 LPI). After that, I just wash off the cermark spray and it's done. Sometimes I got it with Everbright to protect it and bring out the blacks. I didn't use it in this video because I didn't know about it until recently :)
Amazing well thought out video. Thank you! Is there still a link to find or buy the materials cutting google doc? Sounds like bit would be an amazing resource as we start working on new materials on our glowforge! Thank you John!!
Hi, Nancy! Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Sure, you can find my own speed and power settings: bit.ly/39LSmkK - There's also the community list as well: bit.ly/34fhe3d
Thank you for this video. For the Ultrasuede, the link from your spreadsheet seems to be old. I'm trying to find the right material to use to engrave. Any update on the link?
So far, most informative vid yet. I had to sub as I’ve been looking hard lately. COVID/work here in Canada as a physically challenged scaffolder is tough to support family. Would you recommend the pro model? What about make block? 2 grand cheaper.
Hi, Robert. I've certainly been offered a lot more laser engraving / cutting work when COVID hit. For me, it's just a side hustle. I made about $1,500 this month cutting and engraving signs, custom drum badges, gaskets, etc with the Glowforge. I often think about biting the bullet and plunging in full-time. I recently bought the Pro as my basic now has a million miles on it (but it still runs perfectly fine). I don't know that much about the Make Block laser cutter other than what @makesomething (ruclips.net/video/wEzw3Tp3Aig/видео.html) showed on one video. Although, he still continues to use the Glowforge in all of his laser cutting videos. With that said, all laser cutters output the same thing... some are easier to use, faster, have a better community, etc. The Glowforge basic worked great for me as I started out... the pro is a little faster and can handle larger materials when you need it to. I'd buy whatever you can afford. I'm sticking with the Glowforge as their engraving quality is incredible - even if it's slower than other machines (which oddly helps with ventilation concerns in a neighborhood). You may also want to look in to a good CNC machine. I also make a lot of money on the side with my Shopbot. I love the Shopbot Desktop Max, Avid is another good brand CNC; the new X-Carve Pro is pricey, but easy to use - I owned their first model starting out. I recently started working on building a full Glowforge course - I'd be happy to give you an early access link to it. The full course will be released in March or April. Also, I'm happy to talk more about the business if you'd like. My email is kuiphoff[at]gmail.com
Hello John Where else can you buy laser material? Glowforge shop is out of stock most of the time. I need clear acrylic and plywood material, bad. I have a big order coming.
I've used makerstock.com (a local company for me) and estreetplastics.com for acrylic quite a bit. Although, I haven't found anything as nice as the Glowforge proofgrade plywood anywhere else. I've tried a few different sources and the Glowforge Proofgrade plywood is just so much nicer and always flat. With that said, I often use my drum sander to make thinner solid wood for projects that don't need the stability that plywood affords. This question comes up a lot on the Glowforge Users Group on Facebook.
Hey John! This video was so incredibly helpful, thank you so much for all the detail! I'm wondering if the settings in your linked spreadsheet apply to all versions of the Glowforge or not? Are these settings only for Pro, or will they work with Basic/Plus?
Anna Bokman thanks, Anna! These settings apply to a 40 Watt Basic/Plus. I bought my Glowforge before the Pro was introduced. I hope this helps and thanks for the kind words!
@@JohnKuiphoff Thank you, this is very helpful! Can you tell me if you have any preferred vendors for your wood? I am looking for a baltic or birchwood that will cut and engrave using the settings in your spreadsheet.
Hey John! Quick question! First your video is terrific. I'm just getting into stainless steel etching and wanted to know how long it took the machine to etch out the Stainless Steel sample in the video. I have an 11" x 4" piece of Stainless Steel that I'm wondering how long it would take, etching mostly medium-sized text on it. Thank you!
Hi Niles, I'm guessing about 10 - 15 minutes to mark your stainless steel. Although, if you send me your file, I can tell you exactly how long it would take. Also, if you send me one of your stainless steel plates and your file, I'm happy to run it and mail it back to you so that you can see how it looks. Just send your file to kuiphoff[at]gmail.com - thanks!!!

I haven't watched you for awhile, getting my Glowforge Pro, setup, got it back in Feb, I'm ready to get down to work. If you have time I would really like a class. Thanks 😊
@@dalebond2995 Hi, Dale! I should be around on Wednesday or Thursday. Feel free to email me some times that you’re available and we can chat! Thanks!
@@JohnKuiphoff any time you have time I will be home all day, Wednesday or Thursday, thanks
Well done. Very informative. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this highly useful information.
Game changer, thank you!
Such a great video! Wow --- definitely subscribing!
Thank you!
the best video I've seen yet
This is so dope! 👍🏾
4:16 Or mustard apparently. Much cheaper than the spray.
how do you have so few subscribers! This is fantastic
This is an amazing and informative video!!
So informative!! Thank you!
Love the video! Can you engrave text into wood that has been lightly painted, using the glowforge? Thank you.
Wow, thank you! This is great info!
Awesome video! I was really hoping you'd engrave the agates though :p
Best video - thank you!
Love your ideas, thanks
This video and your google sheet is probably going to singlehandedly save me thousands of hours of setup.
I see you mentioned evo foam. I googled it and most of the results are for eva foam. Do you happen to know if a laser does eva foam? Because if so, that greatly helps with cosplay.
This is amazing!! Thanks for this vid!
Great video! Thanskfor the helpful lists.
Great video and very informative
Lots of great info!
I really like your videos!!!
Wow! What an amazing video.
Stacy West thank you, Stacy! I’m working with my Glowforge to prototype parts as we speak :)
John thanks for the video, I love it. Would it be possible that you have a settings sheet on this?
Hi Tonia, thanks so much! Here is my own settings sheet: bit.ly/39LSmkK - you can also check out the community settings sheet: bit.ly/34fhe3d - I find it's good to keep your own based on your exact materials.
@@JohnKuiphoff Thank you so much
Super helpful video. Thanks!
That's crazy, thank you! How did you do the stainless? Did it require anything special? Like a spray or enhanced laser?
Awesome clip! I’ve got around 5 yards of moss green ultrasuede I’d love to engrave on any idea what setting I should use on the Glowforge Pro?
Hey, John thanks for the informative video. Can you do porcelain tile. What would the settings be. I didn’t see it on the list of materials. TIA.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for this video. For the Ultrasuede, the link from your spreadsheet seems to be old. I'm trying to find the right material to use to engrave. Any update on the link?
Excellent video.
Awesome video! Do you know of a service that can cut colored anodized aluminum pieces into specific shapes?
Great stuff Thank you
Awesome video!!
Awesome video, thanks so much for making this. What sort of paint were you using on the corian?
When you engraved that powder coat did it melt the powder on the edges??? How deep will that engraved on the metal???
Any particular handheld sander you recommend? Great video!
Could you do fabrics like neoprene and lycra??
Wow thank you
Thank you so much for this information! I’m wondering if you have tried the Glowforge on seashells?
Yes, I have! It doesn't make much of a mark. However, if you paint fill the engraving, they look amazing!
