Sir Harry Secombe was a well-known tenor and comedian alongside Spike Milligan, and he made the song "If I Ruled the World" from the musical stage play _Pickwick_ his signature tune. That stage play is based on the Dickens novel _The Pickwick Papers_ , and this might have been a reason Secombe was chosen to play Bumble here.

In the mid-70's I played one of the pickpocket boys in my Catholic elementary school play. For the next 30 years, I dreamed of playing Bumble as an adult. Finally, did so in Community Theater production as a 40 y/o. I loved every second of it, and I had chills every time I sang this song. I showed up on 1st day of rehearsals with this song NAILED....well, maybe not quite as good as Mr. Secombe.....but as close as I could get.

Sir Harry Secombe was born in Swansea South Wales
In his later life he presented
"Songs of Praise" for BBC 1 Sunday afternoon programme
One day the team were filming from a Church in his home town near the Gower peninsula
It was such a long time ago
But I remember being at the hotel where some of BBC crew were staying overnight after filming
    Sir Harry was also present
    Later in the evening
In the Lounge after much persuasion
He stood up and sang this song without musical accompaniment
    or amplification
His voice was so powerful that I swear they must have heard it as far away as Cardiff
He was a real gentleman also
