Sir Harry Secombe was a well-known tenor and comedian alongside Spike Milligan, and he made the song "If I Ruled the World" from the musical stage play _Pickwick_ his signature tune. That stage play is based on the Dickens novel _The Pickwick Papers_ , and this might have been a reason Secombe was chosen to play Bumble here.
Harry Secombe, what a voice! To think this is the same Harry Secombe who was on the Goon Show with Peter Sellars and Spike Milligan just boggles the mind. An all around talented genius!
In the mid-70's I played one of the pickpocket boys in my Catholic elementary school play. For the next 30 years, I dreamed of playing Bumble as an adult. Finally, did so in Community Theater production as a 40 y/o. I loved every second of it, and I had chills every time I sang this song. I showed up on 1st day of rehearsals with this song NAILED....well, maybe not quite as good as Mr. Secombe.....but as close as I could get.
He will lay the blame on the one who named him... O.. Li... ver! Debating using this as an audition piece for a local production of A Christmas Carol. This combined with a Mr. Dolittle monlogue from My Fair Laidy.
I took talent for granted back in the day. Saw this as a kid when it was first released and liked it so much. It’s only now I realize how great it really is.
You think that's bad, my parents threatened to sell me to the gypsies. They even picked up the phone and "called" someone. Terrified me to no end. I broke down and cried saying, I'd be good. Thing was, I didn't know what the hell gypsies were!

@@richdemonstoy5309 He was exceptionally good at what he did,; whether or not you like what he did, he was excellent in the Goons, in movies, recordings.
This is why this movie was so good and in some ways even better than the original musical. While nowadays movie musicals like the latest Les Mis movie cannot even compare to the original
The Overwatch Channel - All Things Overwatch first of all I never said I hate this movie, I like watching it as a "SBIG" but the story and acting were not that good. This video appeared in my recommended and like a normal person I looked in the comments
The composer wrote the story and what a story. I'm sure he had the performers in mind when he tailored his amazing score to their enormous talents. Yes it is based on Dickens, of course. But what a talent upon Mr. Bart.
This song... this film. Reminds me of childhood, not cause Mum tried to flog me for the best price but I remember it was on like every Christmas.. I got bought the soundtrack on vinyl as a kid...still have it.
I used to sing this nicely and my trainer was lady Ági Néni, with a wonderful voice (coloratura soprano). And still I weep when I hear this... RIP Ági Néni, you taught me all about singing and how to appreciate others singing and all. I'll love you forever for this, hope you can hear me wherever you are. When I come and visit you we will have much to discuss.
Sir Harry Secombe was born in Swansea South Wales In his later life he presented "Songs of Praise" for BBC 1 Sunday afternoon programme One day the team were filming from a Church in his home town near the Gower peninsula It was such a long time ago But I remember being at the hotel where some of BBC crew were staying overnight after filming Sir Harry was also present Later in the evening In the Lounge after much persuasion He stood up and sang this song without musical accompaniment or amplification His voice was so powerful that I swear they must have heard it as far away as Cardiff He was a real gentleman also
I woke up thsi morning with this song stuck in my head. and i had it stuck all day in my head and now after thid I am going to go to bed and sing it in my sleep. I love this movie and i am going to be 28 years old on July 13 and I am also a mom of 2 girls 4 and under.
The wonderful, fantastic gorgeously talented Sir Harry Secombe.. Who was also in The Goon Shows with Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan (who wrote them)... Harry could act, sing and so much more... Thanks for posting this wonderful gem... :0)x

Jeez...that must be the most compliments Oliver ever got in his life...
That was a really beautiful scene. Mr Bumble although he is a jerk he has a really loving singing voice!

He’s giving boomer James corden vibes 😅
Agreed
My favorite part "CERTAINLY NOT, SIR!"
have you seen this at a school? I went to one to see oliver

Chris Nutley I’m playing Mr Bumble in April as part of a school production! Great character, but unfortunately I’m a terrible singer :/

This song is the most beautifully sung melody in this musical for me.
Yes, yes!
When I was naughty my dad would walk me down the street and sing this, I was always terrified someone would actually buy me xD
My mom did that to me too when I was a kid. Lol
+KamexKoopa That´s ridiculous and abuse. You can damage a child with something like that.
It's not abusive. My mum did smth similar except she would pretend to drop me off at a park and then drove away for 5 mins
KawaiiCookie88 And you think that's normal?

What a fantastic set, you can almost feel the cold and experience the misery.
It amazes my how even after all theses years the sets and designs still hold up! My god what a fucking timeless masterpiece!

a trick : watch series on flixzone. I've been using it for watching all kinds of movies these days.
It certainly is.
Harry Secombe was such a talented man. A singer, actor and comedian - a true inspiration
This musical has the BEST soundtrack I've ever heard, simply beautiful
Yes! It sure does!!
His Singing Was Incredible 💯😎
Wow, i never get tired of hearing that voice!
Oliver is so adorable!
Mr. Bumble is the bomb, dude knows how to sing.
That last note is just magnificent. And a funny man too.
Harry Secombe had such a powerful voice.... almost as big as his personality.
Yea for a undertaker lol
@@richdemonstoy5309 He was exceptionally good at what he did,; whether or not you like what he did, he was excellent in the Goons, in movies, recordings.
Almost as big as him
Poor Oliver! This scene has something of Les Miserables about it.
Look down, look down, your standing in your grave.
It depends on who wrote theirs first
It reminds me of one of the songs from the Romeo and Juliet made in the 60s
Hence why I'm writing a cross over with Oliver! and Les Miserables
@@amanogirl1 Val Jean buys Oliver instead of adopting cossette
It’s a cold cold world we live in sometimes.
Mr B had a powerful voice.
Such a beautiful melody but so depressing
The most famous tenor of all time mario alanza said he wished he had this man's voice as he was amazing.

Such a good movie musical. Who couldn't help feel sorry for poor Oliver?
What a fabulous tenor and what a lovely, dear man. And hello, Reggie Perrin!

Wow, I'd forgotten what an amazing voice Harry Secombe had, and that Leonard Rossiter was even IN this! He's unrecognisable!
probably the BEST musical ever made
yes
Pepe Grillo definitely. No probably about it!

My Fair Lady is my favorite, but this is up there! :)
Both movies won Best Picture, in fact.
1:21 .. I love that moment, I think Mister Bumblebee does care about Oliver, at least a little
Bumble not bumblebee
MR BUMBLE
RaveleijnRidder Well he is literally selling him
Wasn't it awesome when Sir Optimus Prime turned out to be Oliver's grandfather?
i wouldn't say that he looked at him thinking he should just give in a sell em for a price lower then his offer. being abit greedu

Sir Harry could SING! This is what you get from a TRUE operatic tenor_ and a first class Welsh comedian, too. Cymru am byth!
Great voice. Great song. Great memories.

Sometimes it’s best not to know 😢

Harry Secombe is amazing. I grew up with this and I sang in musicals but only ever met one professional singer who can get close to this!
Oliver: is this Legal?
Mr. Bumble: only here, and in Mississippi
I used to sing this to my Bull Terrier. "Young Dog, Dog for Sale."
