    This was 50 years ago. No CGI....just cinematic infancy, and pure talent in terms of scenery and acting.....doesn't come close to todays lack of everything.

    Back in the early 1980s there was a punk band in Bradford called the negativz who did a version of this song and it was fantastic it would get everybody on the dancefloor in good lively but happy spirits

    In the novel he's even worse. He is referred to simply as "the jew" for almost the whole novel, and never once considers fixing his ways.

      Unfortunately anti-semitic

    • @jalexandertdavies
      @jalexandertdavies 3 года назад +3

      I spent most of my life since watching this as a young child happily not knowing he was supposed to be jewish. Fagin just sounded like a funny Dickensian name ('Twist', anyone?). This song could be about anyone stuck on a bad path

    • @suereed3474
      @suereed3474 3 года назад +4

      @@jalexandertdavies I am Jewish, and this was my mother's favorite character. Her favorite song was when he considers stopping to be a criminal singing "I am reviewing the situation". She understood the Jewish humor behind it and how human he was made to appear. Frankly, I am a little sick of all anti-semitic sentiments, past and present. Clearly, as a people we are innovative, tolerant and open minded. The other major religions seem to either be driven by jealousy, paranoia and indifference. Their survival seems to be based on spreading fear and self hate. The results are not only not humorous but violent. I never felt inferior, if anything, slightly superior.

    Is this guy a stereotype? How can anyone say he isn't? But I love his character all the same. He's funny and he tries to be rational and survive in a cruel world. I love this guy. His numbers are my favorite. They're catchy and upbeat.

    • @polpotter3640

      Dickens had a good few Jewish stereotypes in his books and I think if he was writing now that he would be frowned upon to say the least

    • @stephenderry9488
      @stephenderry9488 4 месяца назад

      Yes, the character in the Dickens novel was a very negative stereotype but I think Lionel Bart who wrote this musical (and was himself Jewish) knew exactly what he was doing and drew heavily from traditional Eastern European Jewish music for this song in particular.

    I saw the original production on Broadway and then again in the London revival. Have the original cast album. Some of the songs I will always remember. “Food , glorious Food” , Consider Yourself” and my favorite was “As long as he needs me”. Some great actors played the lead character
