I wouldn't really give any credits to SM for this one. This was Taemin's vision, he knew exactly what he wanted, he called up the director he wanted and they pulled an all nighter, planned the whole thing and came to SM and said "ok, this is what I'm doing. No, you don't get a say". Taemin went over every shot with the director and they edited it together. SM, on the other hand, chose NOT to give this promotion.
The obvious meaning of this song is Stockholm syndrome, with Taemin playing both the criminal and the victim, but according to Taemin, the real meaning of the song is his own inner battle between his idol side and real person side.

Taemin is always involved in the concepts of his music videos, but he was particularly involved for this one. He handpicked the director and they developed his vision together. He even helped with the editing process. I'm just saying this because I think SM gets too much credit for their artist's work haha.

⛓️🩸🔪This concept of Criminal👹 is not only sensual, it is much deeper and Taemin was very proud that he personally thought up the concept and decorations and wrote the lyrics. The lyrics were originally written by the author of the lyrics, commissioned by Taemin on the theme of Stockholm syndrome, the victim and the criminal. But on the 12th time, the lyrics were completely rewritten by Taemin himself, the author did not even recognize the original lyrics. The sound of the walkie-talkie is also Taemin's idea. The concept has a double meaning. If you read the lyrics, it's about the dependent relationship between the victim and the narcissist, and how the victim can gradually move from being a victim to a rescuer to a persecutor in the Karpman triangle. But it's even worse. Taemin always draws inspiration from within himself first and writes a story about himself. This story is about his place in the world of show business. The shop window is the SM Entertainment agency, and the mannequin heads are idols. He stands with a chainsaw, all wounded, but wants to destroy this world. But he can't give up everything and leave this cruel and dirty world of show business, because it's both painful and tormenting, but it's also a sweet pleasure. After all, he doesn't want to stop creating and making art. The bag on his head is a symbol of the fact that at that time he began to have depression and panic attacks due to stress and pressure. It turns out that he also torments himself by living in this. The red veil that covers his head is a symbol of a dackmant consciousness from the manipulations of psychopaths. It is no secret that the leadership positions are occupied by psychopaths, narcissists for the most part, people without empathy. Crows and black butterflies above the head are depressing thoughts about suicide and death.
A tea rose, yellow at the end of which he leads along the chin, is a symbol of forgiveness and farewells .
In the video, you see hands reaching out to him through the black walls, wanting to touch him. And Taemin pokes his finger at the glass. This is a symbol of mobile phones, through which people try to look into his soul and leave their fingerprints on his heart. There are such words in the song.
Thank you very much for your reaction and sincerity.
" My open wound is full of your fingerprints, but my hands are not clean either."
Also in Korean the phrase Break me completely when he whispers can have another meaning - run away from me. Yesoi pronounce with a different stress. This is what indicates from both the victim and the criminal to himself.

Taemin is a conceptional performer.. every title song of him (we call this Move-era, Want-era❤, Criminsl-era.. etc) comes along with a certain concept.. the MV, the dancing, the dressing all will be aligned to the content of the song. He is very pedantic on this and this is one of factors why he is so outstanding.
And most of this title songs have deeper and hidden meanings. It‘s meanwhile a hobby of Shawols/Teamints/Teammates to write „essays“ how to interpret his songs. I personally am a big fan if this interpretations.

When this came out it was THE MOMENT..... everyone in the industry was covering it, was talking about it. It was an era in which many new kpop fans did not now SHINEE. He got so much attention as an artist at the time introducing more people to shinee and being a great senior to younger idols

Thanks for your reaction! By this point in his career, Taemin is the driving creative force behind his concepts, songs, aesthetic, mood etc. I greatly admire how he does not follow trends; rather he has his own path and vision. He explores many themes that hide behind the mask of polite society, and indeed deep within ourselves: Sensuality, innocence, sin, temptation, greed, sexuality, attraction, desire, obsession, fear, loneliness, friction, domination, death... He will incorporate ideas formed from his interest in many subjects, such as philosophy or science. He is not a trivial or superficial artist. Everything is planned and has intention. Quite simply, he is magnificent and simply Taemin.

Taemin I don't know how much "freaky "he is, but he likes it when his work evokes mixed/complex feelings. With a dark concept. And since video helps to convey information to those who do not understand the language too, he uses it. And he pays attention to this aspect, since he is a singer with a bias towards performance. That's why all his songs that you can just dance and chill to are bsides, which he uses well at concerts to get the audience going, but his main trick is the audience mesmorazzd with an increased heartbeat. 😂

As for the music of the 80s, you are tired now, but when Taemin released "Criminal" it was a novelty, at least I have not heard such an obvious 80 hint in K-Pop 2021-22 I came across a lot of songs with an 80s sound.

taemin is the best soloist that SM could have ever had in his hands, in the sense that he was very complete, with absolute mastery in dancing and creating immersive performances, high quality and deep concepts and fashion in his music. no other soloist did it like him until now. taemin is an artist with all his letters because of the good reputation taemin was gaining by the music critics and many idols started to cite him as their role model people started to call him “the AS of SM” only for years later SM wasted him and let him go so easily. taemin's works are very neat, GUilty is the most epic thing he did.

Just so you know, the Taemin you see is not necessarily the criminal in his "Criminal" MV. I see him as the victim who is being held captive by the criminal. The criminal is his lover (i.e. the other side of his personality) that he is singing about, which is a metaphor for the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol. The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by a lover. He has now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on him, so now he accepts the abuse as a normal part of the relationship. Even though he is being abused by that person -- possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does -- he can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt him, etc.

All the abuse is happening to him, he is not hurting anyone else or doing anything criminal himself. Therefore, the story isn't about Taemin being a criminal. Notice, the S.W.A.T. team isn't arresting him. They pretty much walk right past Taemin and ignore him as they search for the criminal.
The "boss" vibe is a facade he puts on to make people believe he is in control, but as we see in the choreography, he is being manipulated by all the outside forces around him. For example, we see him lying across the backup dancers backs and they pick him up and manipulate him to do what they want him to do at that moment. A lot of his dance moves are designed to make him look like a marionette puppet that is being pulled around by strings and being told what to do. Which is what we see when he is crouched down and he creates that wiggly, wave movement in the dance, etc.
As part of the story, he has been held captive for so long that, as it says in the lyrics of the song, he is now suffering from Stockholm syndrome, so he is no longer fighting the abuse and that is why you see him throw his bindings away. The criminal -- which is a metaphor for the pressure he has felt in his career -- no longer has to tie him up to keep him there. (Because he has fallen in love with the pain and suffering he inflicts on himself as an artist, etc.) The backup dancers represent the forces he is struggling against as he fights with his mind over whether to stay or go, etc.
Also, pirates didn't just wear eye patches because they injured one of their eyes. Eye patches were more often worn by thieves who had perfect eyesight. An eye patch helps you to see better in the dark or in low light. If you shield your eyes from bright light, when you enter a dark room and remove the eye patch, your eyes adjust more quickly to the dark. This allowed pirates and thieves to be able to see better and be able to get in and get out more quickly as they go from bright daylight to darkness of a low lit room or hull of a ship, etc. Therefore, I think the eye patch that Taemin wears and the masks covering one eye of the backup dancers is a metaphor for being able to see in the dark and how Taemin is saying he has now been in the industry long enough to understand what the "criminal" is doing to him -- i.e. he knows he needs to shield himself from the bright lights of fame in order to see what is happening in the dark -- and he is fully aware of what he is sacrificing, but he loves what he does too much to leave, etc.
Fun fact: It was Taemin's idea to include the police blotter/news clips in that part of the song. If you notice, the sound bites are from all over the world and they are speaking multiple languages.
"Criminal" is the second part of Taemin's Never Gonna Dance Again album that came out in 2021. It's part of a trilogy, which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal," which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea," which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle. And now his follow up release, "Advice," has become the epilogue to the story.
Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
This album's whole concept is a metaphor for his life and career. With every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets. In "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship. In "Idea" he takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
All of Taemin's dances tell a story. As he has said, he specifically designs his choreography to be a part of the story within the song and MV. So, "Criminal" is supposed to be slightly creepy, as well as sexy. He is literally being abused and asking you to please "destroy me more."
As a member of SHINee, Taemin has trained his entire career to be able to pull off this type of intense and intricate dancing while singing live and always sounding flawless the whole time.
If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing, not only should you see his dance practice video for "Criminal," but just wait until you see a live performance. You will be even more blown away. And if you want to see Taemin explain the concept behind his dance moves, watch a tutorial video he did where he explains the dance to Jeno and Mark from NCT-Dream.

Love you guys!!! Personally, I don't think Taemin follows "what's in." He does what he wants, regardless of what people think and regardless of what is popular. He tries different genres and styles because he wants to be an artist capable of doing different genres and styles. In my opinion, he doesn't follow certain styles to stay relevant in K-pop. If anything, Taemin wants people to notice him simply as an artist and not a K-pop idol or K-pop artist. He's stated this several times throughout his career. He doesn't like being confined and doesn't like being limited, so I don't think he'll ever just release a song to stay relevant. Of course he wants to stay on everyone's radar, but he's intentional about what he releases and why. I don't think it's bad for an artist to put out music that follows current trends. However, I think Taemin plans ahead of time a lot and is very intentional about what he plans to release, especially now.
