I love how Kevin said Taemin seems so dominant but sings from a submissive side. That perfectly summarized the whole suspect x innocent concept that Taemin wants to communicate across. In conclusion, I'm one proud Shawol!
Yes, me too. I mean the visual aesthetic of the MV, the choreography, his voice really complemented the lyrics and sound of the song. All elements combined to create the cinematic atmosphere Taemin wanted.
I loved that too because it really crystallized the thought in my mind that every aspect of this song is reflecting the theme. His vocals especially before the third chorus really ARE submissive and so soft, revealing his innocent side and the struggle between rejecting and embracing his suspect side. There is the “destroy me more”/“run away from me” moment and the duality of what he says also showing that conflict, and then the dominance in his voice really comes out during the last chorus, overpowering the softer backing vocals of the usual chorus melody.
😫 This song is literally a masterpiece, I could talk about it and the MV for hours. I’ve been watching it constantly since day 1 of its release and even though they are right that the song itself is “simple” there is something about it I find incredibly complex and interesting. I could listen to it for hours without ever getting bored! ❤️

it’s a real shame this comeback isn’t getting the hype it deserves. obviously the song is good, but the choreo too...he really outdid himself, and that’s saying a lot for taemin!

I can't believe that this is the Taemin that we used to adore before. Criminal made me realized that he really really has grown up as a top tier artist in the industry. His name, Taemin has already becoming a genre. He is always setting the bar so high for these Kpop stuff like music, dance, production, and even the back up dancers. Black Rose is awesome and I like it, too. Actually all of his songs in this Never Gonna Dance Again album, they are gold.
I was just talking about this with my brother, and he's more of a casual listener than a fan but he said "Taemin doesn't sound like kpop, he sounds like Taemin. Even if it wasn't him singing I would think this song sounds completely like him" and I think that's so on point. Nobody's doing it like Taemin, he has a genre of his own

I believe the 80s influence was intentional, if you look at his Instagram teasers plus the choreo, there's a lot of references to Micheal Jackson.
Also funny how I might consider this to be his best comeback in terms of song, mv, styling, and choreo. and it just so happens that Taemin had the most creative control in regards to all of those things this comeback. I really wish SM would invest more in promoting the album, it's easily the best album to come out this year.

YES to everything you said.. It proves that he's turning in the kind of artist that he always wanted, no matter if it's still not "popular".. I love the Press It album and closely followed by Want, but he outdid himself with Act 1 and I CAN'T WAIT for Act 2! ❤️
When I first heard the song, I immediately felt the way Kevin felt. Criminal absolutely 100% transcends. As someone who doesn't grasp music and musical concepts as well as you guys, I immediately knew what Umu was talking about when she was referring to how Taemin's music is very atmospheric, and uses this aspect of itself to elevate into a genre all of his own.
I didn't think NCT 127's Superhuman could be surpassed for me as the greatest KPop song of all time, but Criminal is slowly but surely creeping incredibly close.
Matt Vesliño me me me. Superhuman for me is still the greatest Kpop song to me, but Taemin isn’t even Kpop anymore. And this. This is PEAK taemin Tpop.
Taemin is just an amazing artist. He doesn't even have one bad song.
On top of it all, his musicianship is just out of this world. His sound is so unique the moment you hear his song you can immediately say it's Taemin's.

Stone heart is so amazing and the LYRICS 😭 is poetry and music all put together so good.
*STONE HEART IS THE MOST PRECIOUS THINGS EVER* literally Taemin always pours his heart and soul into all the album, every single song is just ugh *art*, not only him but other kpop artist too, they have beautiful tracks in an album but people mostly will just know the main song which has MV.

Most of the times we are so immersed discussing and hyping on Taemin's dance that we forget to acknowledge how beautiful of a singer he is.
And the crazy thing is that Taemin worked on this while promoting with SuperM! It's like he's put his soul into this comeback, he actually said it himself that he was greatly involved in the making of it!
The track is just so well produced, and the details make it really interesting, especially that final new melody line in the last chorus. Criminal, Black Rose, and Strangers are my favourites off the album. I'm so excited for your review and talk with Adrian!
I really wanted you all to react to this because honestly yes, it hasn’t been getting much promotion and Taemin himself has been quite troubled about it, so I was hoping you all could help him get even the slightest bit more recognition for his work. He’s been working extra hard on this too, being involved in multiple aspects of creative decision making, as he’s talked about in his recent behinds and commentary. And he really really cares about the dark story in this song, and the WHOLE package, getting portrayed in the way he wants it to be. So thank you Kevin and Umu for acknowledging all the things about this that he worked so hard to get across. It kinda feels like the whole industry knows how good this is and is rooting for Taemin - we just need more of the general public to acknowledge it too!

I think this is the most classy and modern 80's inspired atmospheric track-I seriously agree, whoever did the mixing was on another level. The way his melody line gets dragged on and on, really suits the lyrics and concept of the song. Someone explain why this isn't blowing up.
What else it's his company fault for not promoting this comeback, this single and album must be more successful if SM put an effort to actually promotes him

I'm sooooo glad you guys enjoyed Criminal as much as I did...It just felt PERFECT from the first listen, so very Taemin. It just grabbed me and held me in its atmosphere. I loved a lot of 2020 releases this but has gotta be on top.
I hope Taemin watch this reaction, he should know how people really apreciate his hard work on music, vocal, dance and everything.

It's funny you mention "The Weekend", I mentioned this about "Criminal" on another channel reaction. I stated that this song will be a slow burn instead of a white-hot flame, with many layers to this song and the album for that matter."Blinding light", that song has been out for about a year, and only now do you hear it everywhere,(by the way I love that song~). I consider Taemin to be an "Artists' Artist". I even mentioned on his company's site, that this album should be considered for a Grammy nod. I don't say that of many Albums, but Taemin has really made an exceptional piece of work. It's his turning point in his career and I am so glad I am here to witness it. I can only imagine what Act II is like and his next decade will sound like. I am just so happy for him. My ears are happy too~ 6V6

I absolutely LOVE the vocal placement/timbre Taemin chose for the chorus, and I think it’s part of what makes the mixing and the balance so perfect. It’s softer, in his head voice, and is almost (breathy?). It allows the instrumental to come through, it re-frames your focus, and it allows the third chorus to be that much more impactful when he begins harmonizing with himself and using his stronger mixed voice. It also is very different from the typical chorus which is usually where a singer uses a fuller tone. Ugh this is easily my favourite kpop song of the year it’s literally perfect. Plus the choreo is so beautiful, artful, and shows us why he’s the best dancer in the industry. LOVE
Thanks for the reaction- interesting as always - and I love this song so much. I have to add tho, what Kevin says about it being more American/western - I'd argue that it's European (euro electrohouse). Obviously heavily influenced by 80's synth pop (generally American and British) but looking at that genre in a contemporary setting it's pretty specific to Europe, I think? For example "Diamond Veins" by French 79, "Blast Off" By GESAFFELSTEIN and "Odd Look" by Kavinsky (or practically any daft punk track) I think it's mixed pretty similarly to Diamond Veins but what makes Criminal outstanding tho (except for the fact that it's THE freaking ACE Lee Taemin) are how his smooth vocals stand out boldly in the track, the seamless mixing/mastering and that the song is mixed to be a pop track; super smooth and therefore more digestible. IMO a perfect track both instrumentally and obv vocally (shinee vocals/vocal mixing is always on point)! The adlibs sound absolutely impeccable and I could go on forever so imma stop here for now

Kevin praising the lyrics made me so happy.
Taemin worked closely with lyricists Danke on Criminal.
He asked that they take a more conceptual approach, blurring the lines between criminal and victim, tainted love and the one who did the tainting.
The song portrays a toxic love, but it also portrays a protagonist who participated in his own downfall, by drinking from the poisoned chalice, again and again.
If he was stabbed in the heart, he took part in the stabbing.
In my opinion, the lines "I don’t hate how your words make my feet entangled and dance", and "My hands holding yours that stabbed me, are not clean either", best captures this ambiguity.
Criminal is a masterpiece, and it is Taemin at the peak of his power - sophisticated, sensual, and dark (the choreography was partly inspired by dead bodies).
So happy this was one of the tracks that made me a Taemint, and a Shawol.
The other was Think Of You.
Can't think of a better duo that represents Taem's duality.
Taemin's music has always been my favourite since I because a kpop fan. Move, thirsty, want, famous....they all have such a different vibe. And he gives such wonderful music.

Thank you so much for this reaction! I'm totally agree with your review about 'fluidity' in this song, it could be repetitive and the structure is not that 'wild' but it still slaps so hard with its minimalism. I'm so upset tho with the way SM treated Taemin's comeback this time, they were bad but this time they didn't even bother to do a single thing to promote this masterpiece. I just hope his Act 2 album will receive the support it deserves because SM has been calling Taemin their ACE for 6 years now and didn't even do half of half from his hard work. Can't wait for the NGDA: Act 1 album review!
It's fascinating that musicians/people with musical background tend to pick up the same observations regarding this song likd the flawless mixing, the melodic lines, and the 80's-esque vibes (esp the synth). Goes to show how thoughtful these elements are in the song.
It basically means that Taemin's work and musicality is THAT good, knowing he was involved in EVERYTHING in this comeback... He needs to know that his pushing for quality was worth it and will always be, only time will tell he was right all along ❤️👍🏼

This really helped me to wrap my head around this song.
On first listen, this song went straight into the top 10 of my 'Favorite 2020 Songs - Playlist', and I couldn't explain why.
Sometimes, a song just works for you, and even if it is not the most unique or weird song (I tend to like those, lol), it feels so different from everything else. To quote Kevin: "I just felt it".
If I had to pick a favorite part, I would go with the final chorus, too, the whole song seems almost reserved, especially the way Taemin sings, and then the final chorus: Not just a new melody, but together with the original one! It reminded me of EXO's Obsession, and 'Criminal' easily joins my 'Best Final Chorus - Playlist', too.
I am looking forward to your album reaction (I expect drama in the discussion part :) ), and I am excited for some more Adrian McKinnon on the channel!!!
I almost never comment on any videos but I just had to for this video. Umu and Kevin thank you so much for reacting to Taemin’s Criminal T^T. I’ve been a Shinee fan since their debut and they have never disappointed. Taemin has matured SO much and have really found his own style. There’s no doubt that this comeback is pure artistry and and he has transcended beyond being just a kpop idol. It feels so great that you both love the song too!!! As a following of your channel from the beginning the shinee fan in me makes me extra happy.

About the song has 80s feels, right as before released they describe it's a synth-wave genre song which combines a tense rhythm with a newtro sound.

My favourite moment would have to be that highest note that he hits in the third chorus...like, the whole countermelody is so tasteful and has a really different contour from a lot of "harmony" lines, crossing over and playing with the main melody, but that note in particular just hits different hah

i want taemin to watch this i mean he put sm effort for this production for this song for the whole album but in the end inadequate and improper promotion strategy ruined it all :(( ik he would feel sad and disappointed that his song is not hyped and as well known as he would think. He has prep for it for more than a year, filmed the MV since March, then procrastinate the comeback date first cuz he's not satisfied enough, his wrist injury for the second time. He has told us so many times this is his turning point, that he sacrificed sm to fulfil this album. I just feel sad, his comeback stage is due one week later and only lasted for HOLY FCK WEEK :) plz he's so precious, I'm so pissed and loved him even more rn

What you guys have discussed - you've basically taken the words out of my mouth! It's western pop but it's not: it's Taemin pop lol but seriously though, I could never place why I loved this track so much. I have loved Taemin's tracks since Move - I love the track and the album Want but I didn't love it as much as I have loveddddd Criminal though. The whole album is a banger - you will absolutely love it! It's such an experience to listen to the entire thing. I can't wait for your review and your interview with the composer! It'll be so exciting to hear him being interviewed from two classical musicians! Thanks :)

I loved this reaction!!!! Taemin has always being this cinematic in his previous works. His concepts and sound are always different from what's trending in kpop.

Why is there not a love button!! I would smash that 1,000 times! This song is so Taemin. He is really pushing the envelope of musical production coming from Korea. Like Kevin said, this sounds like western style less typical "kpop" . This gets me thinking what music his Taemin listening to be able to create this kind??

I'm not even Taemin's fan but ngl Criminal is like the best KPOP song this year (at least for me). I've been listening to his album and I really like his musical style. It's even more enjoyable to watch his stage performances. Taemin is indeed one of the best solo act out there
