Dave 2d is the only reviewer that says the dell xps 15 throttles and everyone else didn't say anything. I got one and it throttled. Dave is the most honest reviewer.
Throttle means it slows down. So lets say I have a 4 GHz CPU, when it hits a certain temperature, the computer will down-clock the CPU to lets say 2.5 GHz until the computer comes down to a reasonable temperature. during this time the CPU performance is reduced by a large margin, like lets say under normal use, you're computer will seem to be more laggy, or just overall slower. This is what throttling is with in the tech field.

Cuz he is biased against Apple bro. Look around his videos, he is supposed to tell the truth or at least being relatively objective in this channel when he got so many viewers, but for so long he had never commented almost any positive things about iPhone since ipx came out. He said it’s not worth it and things like “OH LOOK!!! iPhone sucks, pixel is better Samsung is faster in internet speed, etc. Can you imagine he just is so quick and so urgent about putting the downsides about Apple products in front of his videos once there is any rumors out there, while no bad things about android has been compared with iOS devices. Screw all the RUclipsrs (including those I follow and love to watch) that effectively tried to discredit Dave2D. Your problem is your testing sucks, just like all the Tech RUclipsrs who had great reviews for the GTX970 because none of them properly tested the card, and then the memory controversy blew up in Nvidia’s face.
Rubinix Cube The GTX 970 was (and still is) a beast of a card at its price point - even with 3.5GB of VRAM. Not the best comparison to this i9 MacBook. It performed better than the 960, and it wasn't shockingly overpriced!
Neil I wasn't actually referring to the performance of either technology. I was referring to the RUclipsrs who didn't perform the full set of tests from end to end. Even though it wasn't a problem for everyone (just like in this case), it wasnt "as advertised" for those few that tried using it to it's full potential.
Rubinix Cube Running the standard performance tests was valid because the card still performed fps-wise as advertised. Only a very niche % of the userbase was effected, but the problem was blown out of proportion, mostly by AMD fans (even though it was far better than competing AMD cards). It was still technically 4GB just 0.5GB was VRAM. The card itself still performed fps-wise as advertised by Nvidia. It was terrible marketing on their part, no doubt but a bit different to this situation. With the Apple i9 it's akin to saying you bought the 980ti but it performed worse than the 970 in certain tasks because Nvidia didn't provide adequate cooling. Hardly an apples to apples comparison. Nvidia used a different approach to their card architecture that still pushed technology forward, even if it was marketed badly, whilst Apple are just putting a better chip in so it sounds better without actually designing the machine to cater to that chip - progressing nothing. With the i9 it effects literally every unit, so almost the entire userbase is effected. Imo while they are both examples of misleading specs, one of them is far more egregious - especially considering the price of the i9 MacBook. The GTX 970 was the price/performance king for ages. Just my 2 cents.

I'm a tech enthusiast and dave channel is more interesting than unboxtherapy even mkbhd. He's straight to the point, no unneeded joke, edit less understandable more and he upload video almost everyday. He told only what is needed, like the specs, performance, build quality, ergonomic, gaming-rendering, and issues. Compact and satisfied ass hell. Because i don't have all day to hear unboxtherapy lame joke and mkbhd unnecessary side opinion. The base mean of review is very simple, unwrap it and explain it. I see only dave and detroitborg who stick to that definition nowadays.
What will happen if everybody starts using this same template? UnboxTherapy also tries to amuse us and I am always having fun, I'm not such a tech geek and this channel makes it more interesting for me so...just different styles. I mean I am sure that he can stop all the jokes and be straight forward and so on, and I am also sure that he will loose half of his audience.
This is way too edited. A loaded subject needs a decent and objective video and response. All I got from this was a heavily edited 6.30 with mainly Lou speaking (respect I love your videos). This deserves a 10 min video of Dave going through the process. I work in film and know the power of an edit and this video leaves as many questions as it answers. Dave seems hurried and the cuts and edits seem to dilute the content tbh.

Unbox Therapy made it painfully obvious which reviewers were skewed towards Apple and who were the bandwagon haters and which guy on RUclips was trying to objectively see the device that Apple put out. Seriously youtubers who have been anti-Dave 2d have no credibility in my eyes now.
Personally I think Dave took it too personally. Scientifically speaking, there's always going to be people who try to disprove you. That doesn't make them bad people. Everything we know about how the world works, people are constantly trying to disprove it, or change it to something else. It's called perspective/knowledge improvement. Same applies in this case. MKBHD and Morrison aren't bad reviewers, rather, just people who made the picture painted by Dave a little bigger. On Morrison's side, quite a bit bigger, because he had A LOT more data to work with. He never called Dave a liar or even anything close. He just used more data to show how the throttling affects people in different ways. But what Morrison and MKBHD was important, because it helped to show how footage from specific cameras, and how different specific pieces of software handled themselves. It's not only important for the user to know if the machine is right for their own usage scenario, but for Apple and the Software Engineers to actually release patches to better optimize the software. Now, anyone hating on Apple for thermal throttling, here's a reality check. Every laptop throttles under load. I have a THICK laptop from 2016 with an i7 6700HQ paired with a 960M 4GB graphics card and 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L RAM (in fact, the same laptop that Dave2D, as well as every other channel have been raving about all over youtube - the Dell 7559 fully upgraded including WD Blue m.2 SSD 500GB and Intel 8250 Wifi). I ran cinebench on it, and you know what? The i7 6700HQ is outperformed by an i7 2600 desktop CPU which is now 7 years old, paired with 8GB DDR3 RAM - purely thanks to the fact that the i7 7600HQ throttles. Heavily. I've ordered a 1050 Ti LP for the machine which contains an i7 2600 (An HP Elite 8200 SFF) and it'll be even more powerful than a 2016 gaming laptop. By far. Despite the laptop being 5 years newer.
G B - I'll have to disagree with you about Morrison, I watched his videos. The pre-patch video he basically called Dave a liar, the clip was in this video, he just did it in a nice way. His first video concentrated only on the times it took for the laptop to to the tasks, not if the laptop was throttling or anything about the thermal issues. Dave's entire video was about how the i9 has a fundamental problem, not about the time it took to do something. Most of the people who made videos defending Apple failed to see this. Morrison's post patch videos did show the thermal issues with the laptop, and by his emission because people were complaining that he didn't show them in the first video. I would say these videos people produce are not only important for someone to see if the product is right for their particular use, but also to see if the product is worth the money you spend on it. Even post patch the i9 can barely hold base clock under a sustained load, to me this is unacceptable and not worth the money you would spend on it. The patch that Apple released as far as my research can tell didn't optimize the software, it fixed their mistake of allowing too much voltage to going to the processor. It looks like they allow just enough voltage to keep the processor at base speeds while keeping it from thermal throttling. All hardware in computers is controlled by software, design/hardware flaws can be masked by software. Yes all CPUs thermal throttle if you go by the fact they cannot max frequency under a sustained load. I have a four year old HP that will hold 688 mhz over base clock under a load ( 100 % ). Throttled from the 3.2 max?, yes, thermal throttled?, no, runs about 85 C. I've seen in videos where the i9 is hitting 95 C at 20% utilization, this is not a heavy load, and to me unacceptable. The main issue is these companies are shoving powerful CPUs/GPUs into a small form factor while providing insufficient cooling which more than likely shorten the lifespan of the product, and effect the performance of the product, while at the same time selling the product as this production powerhouse enticing people to pay a premium for a product that will not hold up under scrutiny. Apple is one of the worst offenders of this. The attitude of "I know it throttles ( and I'm not getting what I paid for ) but it is still faster than last years" will eventually wear of and people will get sick of it. People buying and supporting this practice only helps the companies bottom line and keeps them from improving/fixing the defects of the product. Every year the product should get better, not worse, or stay the same. Macbook Pros have had thermal issues for years now, some sort of solution should have been worked out by now, but why do it when people are still buying and supporting the product.

Anyone trying to deny throttling needs to find a new hobby because anyone who thinkers with computers will find the evidence of that after just a couple tests. Like you said, thermal throttling is more common than not in laptops (Turbo Boosts have a time out window for a reason). Dave’s video was honest. There’s a difference between not expecting a CPU to throttle vs when a cpu is underperforming within a wide window of what’s expected. The fact that Apple fixed this so quickly with the patch is proof that they had to rework their normal MacBook power management for these 2018 Pros. They are all right in line with what’s expected now. There’s a lot of things you can complain about these laptops (price, keyboard, dongle life) but shitty cpu performance isn’t one of them. Not after the patch.

Personal Experience: I tested a red iPhone 7's water resistance within the IP67 limit and the i7 failed the test, I contacted Apple in Taiwan and they never admitted that they produced a faulty phone. I later got in contact with the government to solve this issue. Apple was supposed to rest this case with me in person and they canceled the meeting 3 times because they "had meetings". In the end I sold the faulty i7 for 1/3 of the price that I bought for. Maybe try to invest more in your customer service and not behave like an amateur, Apple? If Apple thinks it's ok to let down a customer because she told the truth, then I have nothing good to say about them.
OnePlus (smaller company) does even have a better customer service than Apple. I my opinion Apple's reputation is declining every year after the death of Steve Jobs

Hi, I am new to this channel, and been watching your videos for like 2 days, and so far I loved ur every video. This one seemed a little awkward. I felt some kind of bullying tension, as if u were jealous that apple contacted and acknowledged him and not you, lol. If u called him to your channel as a guest and he was kind enough to accept your invitation, then let him speak for once. He is obviously smart and knows a couple of things, but you kept interrupting him and didn’t let him say what he had to say. apple should really stop trying to make stuff ultrathin, just make it work at a decent size, i have a 2015 macbook and for a laptop that like it name suggest, you should be able to place on your lap while using it... its impossible, that shit get soo hot i feel it could cause 3rd degree burns.
This is why they're not usually marketed by responsible retailers as laptops. They're usually sold as notebooks (even by Apple)- because calling them laptops is misleading as to how they should be used. I call them laptops regardless, so whatever. Onto the point. They're not actually supposed to be used on your lap. Using laptops on your lap blocks the ventilation, causing them to get even hotter. Burn yourself while using a laptop on your lap, that's your own fault for using them in a manner which goes against how they're designed to be used. People also cry that their laptops die after being used on a bed, despite it being their own fault for covering the ventilation. Don't blame manufacturers for user stupidity. Have someone cover your nose and mouth with a hundred layer of rags and see if you can still breathe. If you start writhing, desperately trying to breathe but can't, then you know why using laptops on a flat, hard surface (and not on your lap/bed/covers or whatever) is necessary.
The problem is for the top spec MacBook Pros, they will overheat because of limitations posed by apples design philosophy. Firstly in an effort to have low usage noise, they don't have the fans running at the fastest speed. They artificially reduce the cooling capacity of its thermal system. The second point links to your point on the size. By keeping it so thin, the cooling system is not fit for purpose for heavy loads. They need a new cooling system. This new patch improves performance, but the i9 chip in the MacBook Pro is still not able to reach its peak performance and clock speed. It's performing better then it's release and the i7, but not at it's best. So does that justify the price?

Screw all the RUclipsrs (including those I follow and love to watch) that effectively tried to discredit Dave2D. Your problem is your testing sucks, just like all the Tech RUclipsrs who had great reviews for the GTX970 because none of them properly tested the card, and then the memory controversy blew up in Nvidia’s face.
Rubinix Cube The GTX 970 was (and still is) a beast of a card at its price point - even with 3.5GB of VRAM. Not the best comparison to this i9 MacBook. It performed better than the 960, and it wasn't shockingly overpriced!
Neil I wasn't actually referring to the performance of either technology. I was referring to the RUclipsrs who didn't perform the full set of tests from end to end. Even though it wasn't a problem for everyone (just like in this case), it wasnt "as advertised" for those few that tried using it to it's full potential.
Rubinix Cube Running the standard performance tests was valid because the card still performed fps-wise as advertised. Only a very niche % of the userbase was effected, but the problem was blown out of proportion, mostly by AMD fans (even though it was far better than competing AMD cards). It was still technically 4GB just 0.5GB was VRAM. The card itself still performed fps-wise as advertised by Nvidia. It was terrible marketing on their part, no doubt but a bit different to this situation. With the Apple i9 it's akin to saying you bought the 980ti but it performed worse than the 970 in certain tasks because Nvidia didn't provide adequate cooling. Hardly an apples to apples comparison. Nvidia used a different approach to their card architecture that still pushed technology forward, even if it was marketed badly, whilst Apple are just putting a better chip in so it sounds better without actually designing the machine to cater to that chip - progressing nothing. With the i9 it effects literally every unit, so almost the entire userbase is effected. Imo while they are both examples of misleading specs, one of them is far more egregious - especially considering the price of the i9 MacBook. The GTX 970 was the price/performance king for ages. Just my 2 cents.

I'm a tech enthusiast and dave channel is more interesting than unboxtherapy even mkbhd. He's straight to the point, no unneeded joke, edit less understandable more and he upload video almost everyday.
He told only what is needed, like the specs, performance, build quality, ergonomic, gaming-rendering, and issues. Compact and satisfied ass hell. Because i don't have all day to hear unboxtherapy lame joke and mkbhd unnecessary side opinion.

This is way too edited. A loaded subject needs a decent and objective video and response. All I got from this was a heavily edited 6.30 with mainly Lou speaking (respect I love your videos). This deserves a 10 min video of Dave going through the process. I work in film and know the power of an edit and this video leaves as many questions as it answers. Dave seems hurried and the cuts and edits seem to dilute the content tbh.

Unbox Therapy made it painfully obvious which reviewers were skewed towards Apple and who were the bandwagon haters and which guy on RUclips was trying to objectively see the device that Apple put out. Seriously youtubers who have been anti-Dave 2d have no credibility in my eyes now.
Personally I think Dave took it too personally. Scientifically speaking, there's always going to be people who try to disprove you. That doesn't make them bad people. Everything we know about how the world works, people are constantly trying to disprove it, or change it to something else. It's called perspective/knowledge improvement. Same applies in this case. MKBHD and Morrison aren't bad reviewers, rather, just people who made the picture painted by Dave a little bigger. On Morrison's side, quite a bit bigger, because he had A LOT more data to work with. He never called Dave a liar or even anything close. He just used more data to show how the throttling affects people in different ways. But what Morrison and MKBHD was important, because it helped to show how footage from specific cameras, and how different specific pieces of software handled themselves. It's not only important for the user to know if the machine is right for their own usage scenario, but for Apple and the Software Engineers to actually release patches to better optimize the software.
Now, anyone hating on Apple for thermal throttling, here's a reality check. Every laptop throttles under load. I have a THICK laptop from 2016 with an i7 6700HQ paired with a 960M 4GB graphics card and 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L RAM (in fact, the same laptop that Dave2D, as well as every other channel have been raving about all over youtube - the Dell 7559 fully upgraded including WD Blue m.2 SSD 500GB and Intel 8250 Wifi). I ran cinebench on it, and you know what? The i7 6700HQ is outperformed by an i7 2600 desktop CPU which is now 7 years old, paired with 8GB DDR3 RAM - purely thanks to the fact that the i7 7600HQ throttles. Heavily. I've ordered a 1050 Ti LP for the machine which contains an i7 2600 (An HP Elite 8200 SFF) and it'll be even more powerful than a 2016 gaming laptop. By far. Despite the laptop being 5 years newer.

G B - I'll have to disagree with you about Morrison, I watched his videos. The pre-patch video he basically called Dave a liar, the clip was in this video, he just did it in a nice way. His first video concentrated only on the times it took for the laptop to to the tasks, not if the laptop was throttling or anything about the thermal issues. Dave's entire video was about how the i9 has a fundamental problem, not about the time it took to do something. Most of the people who made videos defending Apple failed to see this. Morrison's post patch videos did show the thermal issues with the laptop, and by his emission because people were complaining that he didn't show them in the first video.
I would say these videos people produce are not only important for someone to see if the product is right for their particular use, but also to see if the product is worth the money you spend on it. Even post patch the i9 can barely hold base clock under a sustained load, to me this is unacceptable and not worth the money you would spend on it. The patch that Apple released as far as my research can tell didn't optimize the software, it fixed their mistake of allowing too much voltage to going to the processor. It looks like they allow just enough voltage to keep the processor at base speeds while keeping it from thermal throttling.
All hardware in computers is controlled by software, design/hardware flaws can be masked by software.
Yes all CPUs thermal throttle if you go by the fact they cannot max frequency under a sustained load. I have a four year old HP that will hold 688 mhz over base clock under a load ( 100 % ). Throttled from the 3.2 max?, yes, thermal throttled?, no, runs about 85 C. I've seen in videos where the i9 is hitting 95 C at 20% utilization, this is not a heavy load, and to me unacceptable.
The main issue is these companies are shoving powerful CPUs/GPUs into a small form factor while providing insufficient cooling which more than likely shorten the lifespan of the product, and effect the performance of the product, while at the same time selling the product as this production powerhouse enticing people to pay a premium for a product that will not hold up under scrutiny. Apple is one of the worst offenders of this. The attitude of "I know it throttles ( and I'm not getting what I paid for ) but it is still faster than last years" will eventually wear of and people will get sick of it. People buying and supporting this practice only helps the companies bottom line and keeps them from improving/fixing the defects of the product. Every year the product should get better, not worse, or stay the same. Macbook Pros have had thermal issues for years now, some sort of solution should have been worked out by now, but why do it when people are still buying and supporting the product.

Anyone trying to deny throttling needs to find a new hobby because anyone who thinkers with computers will find the evidence of that after just a couple tests. Like you said, thermal throttling is more common than not in laptops (Turbo Boosts have a time out window for a reason).
Dave’s video was honest. There’s a difference between not expecting a CPU to throttle vs when a cpu is underperforming within a wide window of what’s expected.
The fact that Apple fixed this so quickly with the patch is proof that they had to rework their normal MacBook power management for these 2018 Pros. They are all right in line with what’s expected now. There’s a lot of things you can complain about these laptops (price, keyboard, dongle life) but shitty cpu performance isn’t one of them. Not after the patch.

Personal Experience: I tested a red iPhone 7's water resistance within the IP67 limit and the i7 failed the test, I contacted Apple in Taiwan and they never admitted that they produced a faulty phone. I later got in contact with the government to solve this issue. Apple was supposed to rest this case with me in person and they canceled the meeting 3 times because they "had meetings". In the end I sold the faulty i7 for 1/3 of the price that I bought for. Maybe try to invest more in your customer service and not behave like an amateur, Apple?

This one seemed a little awkward. I felt some kind of bullying tension, as if u were jealous that apple contacted and acknowledged him and not you, lol.
If u called him to your channel as a guest and he was kind enough to accept your invitation, then let him speak for once. He is obviously smart and knows a couple of things, but you kept interrupting him and didn’t let him say what he had to say. What a garbage video, and u should work on your interviewing/communication skills.
apple should really stop trying to make stuff ultrathin, just make it work at a decent size, i have a 2015 macbook and for a laptop that like it name suggest, you should be able to place on your lap while using it... its impossible, that shit get soo hot i feel it could cause 3rd degree burns.
This is why they're not usually marketed by responsible retailers as laptops. They're usually sold as notebooks (even by Apple)- because calling them laptops is misleading as to how they should be used. I call them laptops regardless, so whatever. Onto the point. They're not actually supposed to be used on your lap. Using laptops on your lap blocks the ventilation, causing them to get even hotter. Burn yourself while using a laptop on your lap, that's your own fault for using them in a manner which goes against how they're designed to be used.
People also cry that their laptops die after being used on a bed, despite it being their own fault for covering the ventilation. Don't blame manufacturers for user stupidity. Have someone cover your nose and mouth with a hundred layer of rags and see if you can still breathe. If you start writhing, desperately trying to breathe but can't, then you know why using laptops on a flat, hard surface (and not on your lap/bed/covers or whatever) is necessary.
The problem is for the top spec MacBook Pros, they will overheat because of limitations posed by apples design philosophy.
Firstly in an effort to have low usage noise, they don't have the fans running at the fastest speed. They artificially reduce the cooling capacity of its thermal system.
The second point links to your point on the size. By keeping it so thin, the cooling system is not fit for purpose for heavy loads. They need a new cooling system.
This new patch improves performance, but the i9 chip in the MacBook Pro is still not able to reach its peak performance and clock speed. It's performing better then it's release and the i7, but not at it's best. So does that justify the price?
