John Farnham was 53 in this video, and yet he could still belt it out. Amazing.
An Australian Cold Chisel rock classic, but John's slower version of it has become a classic in its own right.
One of my all time favourite Farnsey performances, even at this older age his vocals are phenomenal
I have concluded he is the best voice of his time. Hecould do Freddie Mercury or a Steve Perry but could any of them do a Farnham? Heart tried and Tina Turner had a go...but none of the fellas even attempted.
Totally agree you can see why the group Queen asked John to be their frontman when Freddie passed away. John one of the best singers on the planet.
Now that's a great way of putting it.
Sadly his singing career is probably over as he suffered from mouth cancer and had to have quite a major operation including removal of part of his jaw.
I'm a MASSIVE Steve Perry fan..as a singer I tailored a bunch of my sound after him a a couple others but I think you are correct.. John is the GOAT!
Just say the words Lads. Over forty years John developed his voice to a phenomenal level !!!

I love how he acknowledges his supporting vocals or instrumentalists. Taking a moment to shout out their name or just give a thumbs up or clap for their individual performance during live shows. They deserve it as they are accomplished talented performers in their own right.

John has an incredible range. He can sing any genre, even opera.
John can compete with any male artist who has ever sung. Yet he is not comparable to anyone . He is his own man . No he ours - a proud aussie
Love John's version of this song, but then I love everything he does. He gives his all in every performance. You mentioned his acknowledgment of fellow musicians- he always does that. He seems a genuinely nice person. Wishing him well with his current health issues.

Although John wanted to retire a few times over, we his fans wouldn't 'let him'. lol. So he had a couple of comeback tours. He is one special man... In early 2020 at 70 yrs young, just after the devastating fires, he and the band volunteered their time to raise money for the firefighters ... Because that's the kind of bloke he is. And if John's performing, John always draws the crowd!!!! This is also the last time our Livvy (Olivia Newton John) performed. RIP sweet ONJ xo.
Looking back on this now.... We had months where most of Aus, was burning... Our firefighters struggled through and then COVID hit the world... Wow full on! ... And here we were in lockdown, when suddenly the rest of the world discovered John Farnham.
That concert in 2020 was called Firefight.
On a totally separate note, and I apologise if I sound triggered. Obviously Kylie Minogue has a different genre and became our pop princess ....she is not going to appeal to all but she still needs to be respected for her many hard working yrs in the industry and her contribution to the dance/disco genre..
So those saying, she can't sing... That's just unecessary. Kylie is still one of our own and a proud Aussie to boot. So no need to criticize her, just because her voice or dance music might not be everyone's style.....
(Ps I think this keyboard warrior, (and rightly so), has retracted their kylie comment)...
And in 2019 (I think it was just before the fires can't recall) he volunteered his time for the farmers, who were struggling because of the drought..

This performence will allways be one of my favorite with him. His vocal range is out this world. He was 53yo at the time. Every note is spot on. Sing along, then you might understand how hard this song is to sing.
Massive song here in Australia. Both the original Cold Chisel version and John Farnham version. Most Aussies would know every word. Funny how some huge artists don’t make it in other countries. 🇦🇺 🎶
There's no comparison to anyone on the planet that comes close to John's voice and charisma
This song is not about physical war. It is about the war in a relationship where love has turned sour & what's left behind after the heartache. You can literally hear the writers heart breaking in the lyrics of this song. It's a bitter sweet beautiful song and unfortunately the writer passed away a few years ago.
Ah "Farnsy" he NEVER EVER gives a bad performance, he gives his all every time, "outstanding" if normal for him.
Hello again from New Zealand :) Another great reaction guys :) Just look at how far out he holds that mic, his voice is incredibly powerful. He's a legend in our time with a magnificent voice, and a heart as big as the ocean. We are all hoping for a full recovery for John.

I believe this song is 'timeless' especially for those serving overseas in war torn countries. All hoping to 'Not get blown away' before coming home to their loved ones. John passionate and emotional performance is beyond brilliant. I've seen him perform this to our troops during their posting in East Timor and there was hardly a dry eye in the audience. So grateful to all the reactors like your good selves who are sharing John Farnham's brilliance with the rest of the world. God bless.
The irony being it’s a song about a breakup, not a song about war, or troops.
I think you might be mixing up the lyrics. It’s actually “How can I go home, and not get blown away”. It’s about no one being able to “understand” what you have been through. The death, “the chaos”, the mateship of being through the same experience. Same story, same experience. But when you get home, who is going to understand it all? It’s a “shared experience”, you probably don’t want to share. The blood. The death. The loss. The emotion.
The lyric, “Still young, but somehow so much older” sums it up.
@@jamussmyth1612 yeah, I always got a war conflict vibe, and when the lyrics say 'no ones going to steal this heart away' I hear that when there is violence and mayhem, the soldier won't let the enemy take his heart and humanity away, even though that would be a very difficult thing to do. 🥺

@@kjdavis1 You could possibly construe it that way. Albeit very cryptically. The same thing entered my mind, but the lyrics point to the more obvious conclusion. It’s about soldiers returning to civilian life. A huge clue-bat might be in the song title.
John Farnham is one of the greatest singers the world has ever seen and an Australian icon. This song is a classic from one of Australia's greatest ever bands Cold Chisel who had several big hits in Australia during the '70's & '80's. You should also check out the original version of this song from Cold Chisel. Unfortunately they were not able to break big overseas but not from want of trying.

Another captivating, flawless performance from The GOAT. You are right about him acknowledging others on stage. The fact that many of his band members and back-up singers have been with him for 30yrs+ speaks volumes about him I think.

The emotion in John when he's singing this song is breathtaking
Australian Music industry is totally intertwined. If you look at the history of many of our top bands and musicians, most have had a stint in another top band or 2 along the way.
John is truly one of, if not the best vocalist ever. Every time you think you've seen the best from him he gets another 10 years older and turns up the notch a bit more and belts out another incredible version of one of his older classics. And even as he got older, he never hits a bum note.

You should explain to your audience that the 80’s voice means no computer enhancement. A talented voice was genuine back then and didn’t rely on fake image.

Yes, do the Cold Chisel version, too. Especially the Ringside tour version. I think it's from 2003 as well after Chisel reformed for a while. Both are awesome. Love John's slower version . God he has such an awesome voice & talent & passion. I also love Ian Moss. Love his voice (its so unique) & his guitar playing. If you haven't done it yet, react to Bow River, also from the Ringside tour. This is a great reaction, mates!
This was originally released by the Australian Band Cold Chisel also rock legands in Australia. There are a large number of Australian artists that deserved an international career but didn't get recognition internationally

You should watch John doing Amazing Grace with Venetta Fields and Lindsay Field absolutely amazing and as it’s acapella you get to really hear their voices and how they blend so well. It is a must to watch.

A bit of trivia for you guys re the sense of family that John has with all who’ve joined and/or stayed with him for so many years. Danielle Gaha is the new face you can see singing backing vocals since Lisa Edwards had her baby. Danielle’s mother was pregnant with her and was one of the two backup dancers in John’s original video of “Sadie the Cleaning Lady”. She’s the dancer on the right.

This song was first released in 1982 by Cold Chisel, with vocals by Ian Moss and Jimmy Barnes; Cold Chisel's biggest hit was Khe San, another great song by Cold Chisel is Flame Tree.
Long way to the top (AC/DC cover) is well worth a listen.

Can't speak for other Aussies of course, but I don't regard Kylie Minogue as an Australian singer. She was more an actor here, she really became famous as a singer in England.

You should react to a LIVE performance of this 20yrs earlier. This is him in his mid 50's. To do him the utmost justice go back to an 80's or 90's performance. He took it even further back then!
And then watch him in 2019 - he is definitely not just for the 80's. He started in 1967 and still performing like this into his 70's ❤

I'm passionate about John Farnham. His voice is so beautiful that sometimes the happy tears just flow. This song, however, makes me weep, for all those who die in wars, and all those affected by war. War is stupid. But man is territorial and will protect land, people and possessions. Look at what's going on in the world today. Will global life ever be different? July'24. UK. E ❤

Whilst you are right, it is a ballad, I always thought it was about a guy who has been sent off to war and when he returns his difficulties, after what he’s seen, reintegrating back into society and with his girlfriend/wife.
This isnt a smoochy love song lads....its a song about a man who tries to adjust back into life after serving in the war. But, it does have a 80s rock ballad feel to it, for sure. Classic Cold Chisel song. You should watch Cold Chisels version with Ian Moss singing the lead vocals on it, when Chisel reformed for a concert after being apart for years. It's amazing....

This came off the No Reins LP by The Little River Band . It is a great song and sounded fantastic . I was fortunate enough to see him when he was with LRB . The man can sing , no doubt about it . Go listen to the LRB version , it is a lot better than even this version .
The only Kylie song worth listening to is Breathe.

I love all three versions of the song - John Farnham/Cold Chisel & Ian Moss/Farnsey and Barnsey. They are all a little bit different. Really hard to pick a winner, but I reckon the Cold Chisel version is a 9.5.

I’m not sure I know what you’re talking about when you say he has an 80’s voice???? I don’t think you understand the range this man has. You mentioned Kylie and Jason, both very ordinary and never really achieved great fame in Australia.
The slow phrasing he adopted in later performances of this are horrible. No idea why people prefer the 2003 version of this.. the Whispering Jack version is so much better than this

My vote is the Rockpop show live in Germany early 87. The mix by the German TV/Radio company gives it a very different feel - Soo much soul comes through in the vocal. Everyone was on top form that day.

Was actually written to portray the disorientation of returned soldiers.
Many can not return to civically life, suicide rates are high. Comrades were ‘ blown away ‘ in battles, lose touch, move on, pass on,

Probably need to watch an interview if there are any about the meaning behind this song. Most take it to be about soldiers returning from war but Steve Prestwich went through a marriage breakup at the time and it was purported to be about this … Maybe it is about both. Cold Chisel did a lot of songs relating to war bit a marriage breakup can be pretty stormy and heartbreaking, so perhaps Steve was just extra clever by entwining the meaning.
@@magpiegirl3783 I remember seeing a interview years ago. They were talking about this being men at war returning home but feeling there was not the home they left to return to. They were so close sharing everything now had to go back and try to star t again. It was about the time the Vietnam veterans were not being treated as well as they should have.
It was written right in the heart of that controversy with the Vietnam war recognition saga. The soldiers returned home only to be blown away by public sentiment. The Vietnam vets counselling service was started in the same year treating PTSD recognising that the close bonds shared while at war… sharing each others stories…were broken either by death…. Being blown away….. or by returning home to different states.
This is why Prince Harry’s invictus is so important addressing the issue of readjustment, treatment and being able to return to a regular civilian life while inside they are changed forever. Powerful song, I remember when it first came out and how it effected a family member. It would bring him to tears, he would play it over and over.
He lost his best friend who was blown away right in front of him .he never got over it.
He passed away from cancer from Agent orange at 65 years old 10 years ago. He was a draftee.
It not only took his joy and innocence it cost him his life and the family he might have had.
