The fact that he won means when this occurred a lot of people at the newspaper thought he had built a successful business that benefitted society. I wouldn't be surprised if at the time he was also known for generosity and donating to nonprofits, etc. Contrary to popular belief successful business owners usually are benefitting society and the economy. Economics is not a zero-sum game. Just because someone else is making money doesn't mean they are taking it from you. His firm built a lot of impressive buildings that were known for being architecturally impressive and beautiful. He made money because he did a good job. Goes to show that even if a candidate doesn't seem fit for president that doesn't make them a terrible person. It's sad how politics paints everyone so black and white. I see this shit every year where different entities try to pain candidates in a certain light while ignoring all the good things about them. It was done with Obama as well.

He does have a lump sum of cash in his bank account that he can use to fund whatever he wants, whenever without having to clear it by another party, like a external donor or support organization.
