Just recently Citizen did update these watches (this particular reference also) with 8204 movement, which is also hackable on top of being hand-wound automatic. I DO speak from experience, ordered this particular reference from an AD 3 days ago, and to my surprise it came with the 8204 instead of 8203, did some digging, checks out. So if anyone's interested - look for the fresh stock, where you'll be getting that little extra bang for your buck. 👍🏻
Managed to grab a factory refurb NY0040 in February and I love it! Blue lume looks really nice on this update, but as I got mine for $100, I won't complain. Really nice watch for the price.
I have four of these, black dial, sunburst blue dial with blue strap, fully lumed dial and the blue dial Pepsi. The first three now have hacking due the calibre 8204 movement, while the pepsi still has the calibre 8203 movement. Absolutely amazing value for money. I prefer them to my seiko SKX.
Thanks for review! Mentioned movement 8203 I have in my black NY-0040. But then I have also have blue NY-0040, where is actually movement 8204 in my piece. And that one has hack of the second hand 😉
41.8 is a great size here. I remember many of their similar quartz or eco-drive divers being 43 or 44. If they made this in quartz, I could see it being a big hit too. I’m a SKX owner, but the size of this one seems really nice in comparison. Great video Rob!
Back in the vintage days 30 years ago citizen always had better auto movements, the citizen eagle 7s had hand winding and seiko 5 was a "shake to start".
The Citizen NY-0040 is way better than any SKX-007. Rob, do a watch comparison!!! So....Did you put it on the timegrapher? ....Results? You mentioned the 12 o'clock indices...Some see nothing but an indices, some see underwear, and some see Iron Man.
I have this watch in the 50th year limited edition and love it. Perfect size imho. The silicone strap however is pretty bad since it is to stiff and therefore hurts my wrist so I have replaced it with a nato.
Received mine from an AD last week. Dial says 8203 movement. Case back says 8204. It hacks. What a bonus. What a bargain. I paid $199 Australian. About USD146.
Nice reviews - mine arrived today and had it on my wrist for a couple of hours and already feels as part of my body. It wears smaller than I expected One observation - very minute bezel vertical play. Ready various forums and a couple of RUclips vids there seems to be mixed knowledge on whether this means defective or on purpose. Does yours have minute vertical bezel play?
Usually if the crown is at the 8 o'clock or similar position it means the watch is for armed forces. They specify LHD watches so that the crown doesn't have any issues with gloves. I believe that the UK forces either used to or do use a Citizen diver like this, please correct if I'm wrong.
Hi rob. I have the same watch I ordered. The dial says 8203, etc..and some small numbers and letters ending in “CT”. But I noticed in some pictures and macro shots of this watch the last two letters are “DF”. Another thing is that the dial on my watch says 8203 but the case back says 8204. The hang tag that came with the watch says 8204..and surprisingly the seconds hand hacks..do you think I got a fake watch? I contacted the seller and they said the 8204 is the latest movement but they also acknowledged that they can’t explain the 8203 on the dial. What do you think Rob? Watch guys??
Hi. It's not fake. All the latest promaster ones come like that. Dial does say 8203 but the movement is 8204. The tag too would have the same calibration number.
I've got the 50th Anniversary Edition NY0087-13EE - put a Meyhofer direct replacement silicone strap on it. Arguably the best value diver for daily wear and forget duties. Love it
Citizen is the new king of low budget divers their quality control does laps around Seiko which is my favorite brand despite its short comings on budget watches maybe not necessarily their automatics which are still robust but eco drive is their bread and butter the only thing that bugs me is they put really nice solid link fully milled clasp and ratcheting dive extensions on their eco drive divers but if you get an automatic on bracelet they have the cheap folded links and end links a cheap stamped clasp and dive extension in my opinion if I only wanted to spend around $200 I’d look for this watches eco drive version on bracelet I have both on bracelet and the one you get with the eco drive is worlds better than the automatic
Awesome automatic watch if you can find it new for under 180 bucks it's a steal these days considering the seiko version of this citizen dive has gone from 150 dollars 6 yrs ago to 375 minimum today's price on the seiko..
An easy solution, for the crown use, is to wear it on your right hand. Very practical dive watch, with day date, 200 WR & bezel aligned perfectly. The only drawback is the non hackable crown and is only 21 Jewels. Please provide the reserve time & type of glass or crystal. Many Thanks Rob for the quick yet precise review.
Mine just arrived and it didn't come in the same in a box not a tank, it also does not have the dive info on the band which I would have liked do to it being a dive watch. Smaller than my Promaster eco but I do like it but I would have like it better with what it didn't come with.
Great review ! Rob, could u kindly let me know where to get that rubber strap u showed briefly on this video ? I'm trying to find a good quality diver strap for my skx013. Also it's been impossible to find a short length diver strap to fit for my very small 5.75''inc wrist. Many tks for ur info. Cheers
Islanders going for near retail and some of them over retail on eBay everyday. No one gets an islander to impress someone else. Not sure anyone gets a $300 Seiko or citizen to impress others either.
Hi Rob, how did the bezel action feel? I have seen several reviews that stated it is very easy to turn and that Citizen should add more resistance to the bezel. Can you share your thoughts? Thanks.
At least you didn't call it tighty-whities 😂. Still can't unsee it now 🧐 I have the Asia LE model NY-0083-14x. Nice piece. From day one I have flipped the crown to the 2 o'clock when winding & setting the time. Not a fan of the strap but haven't made it a priority (1+yr) to look for a NATO strap with the appropriate rose gold buckle. When I go "Schwarzkopf"; The Promaster goes on my left wrist and the SKX on my right.
Good looking watch. The crown on left would take some getting use to. I had an ecozilla with crown on left side. But it was ecodrive so didnt really matter.
In the absence of SKX today, the promaster is the most convincing alternative apart from Orient watches. I am planning to get the NY0088 version. However, wish the lume was green. I have been learning diving for the last three years and I use a G shock. As I level up, its time to upgrade. Can anyone please tell me if Orient dive watches are ISO certified as this promaster? I also like the ecodrive version of the promaster diver but I don't think the higher price is justified in comparison to this automatic. I even looked at Casio Duro. It has only ok-ish lume and not the upgrade I am looking for over my G shock. It is also not ISO certified I believe.
It’s your fault Rob. Since you pointed out the underpants at 12 o’clock I’ve never been able to consider buying a Citizen diver- “once you see it, it can never be unseen.....and they’re such an awesome watch otherwise 🤪
@@stevenqbosell so what???? This movement its the same since 1975 but with modern machinery it will last for ever! That lack of a hack feature was a deal breaker for me. Now that it has been added, I will definitely be getting one of these. Well done Citizen!
Love the left handed crown.
Wearing my NY0040 while watching this; thanks for featuring a citizen diver, cheers!
I'm a fan of these Citizens, better than the SKX imo
I think so too. However i own two Skx's
@@evh4611 Yes, I have owned the skx009, 007, and 011 they are rock solid watches. I just prefer the fit of these citizens.

Love them both equally. 😊

These citizen autos are quite good. I have one of the old NYs and it gets wrist time.

I liked the similar model I use to have. Bezel even lines up and everything 😉.
Very under rate watch.
Guy’s get over the “underpants”! Super man wore his on the outside!🤣 I love my Citizen diver😎👍🏼
To me, it looks like Ironman's mask
Love these little Promasters. I have the Pepsi with a petrol blue dial!
The toughest japanese diver
Looks like a tank

Indices is the plural of index. It’s a sliver of an index at 3.
What's the difference between the 0085 and the 0080 going for about $100 more?
the 0080 is limited and only for asian markets. It has some differences on the dial as well. Case & movement are the same

Thin case and handwind is the reason i prefer citizen.
