I love that the crown is on the left side. I'm a lefty and wear my watches on my right hand. Right handed crowns eventually destroy the cuffs of my dress shirts.
I've heard they do that to get the crown out of the way of wet suit sleeves because it wears through them if the crown is on the right side and you're wearing it on your left wrist
Not for me. I'm a Seiko enthusiast so the fact that the beze on this Citizen lines up perfectly with the chapter ring markers is unacceptable. The other thing that puts me off is the pressed clasp on a watch that costs 400 dollars - Seiko offer the same on their 1000 - dollar watches - why settle for a pressed clasp on a cheap watch when you can get it for a thousand dollars from Seiko ?
Great watches, stick it on a grey nato and forget about it. The rotor-wobble will make you giggle and you'll love how damn cool it is. It looks a bit 90s so has done it's ageing and will take everything you can throw at it! One of those watches that'll get cooler the more scratches it picks up.
I purchased this from an A.D. in the UK at a discounted sale price of £279, reduced from £399. Mine has a slighly different dial - it is the blue "crusted" effect which I guess is supposed to depict ocean waves. Tbh, I was surprised to see it in the store at all - I was under the impression this limited edition was only available in Asia. It's my second Citizen, I've had a 200m Promaster diver for six years, very versatile. This Fugu is very chunky, masculine and purposeful-looking and has a great deal of prescence, possibly too much presence; you need at least a 7-inch wrist for this "beast." Having said that, our dear Scotsman is absolutely right about the clasp - which is the Fugu's only downside; "no diver extension, cheap and hardly any micro adjustment." A 100% accurate review.
Most Seiko divers also have pressed indices instead of applied indices, with the lume simply layered on top. The lume is still great. The pressed and filled in indices of the SPB053 / 063 are particularly bright, but it that might be because they also appear to be using the same lume formula as the Marine Master models. The diameter of the bezel insert has a strong influence on how big or small the watch appears overall. Similar to how “all dial” watches appear larger than the overall diameter would suggest. I hope reviewers will some day start to measure the outer diameter of the dials for standard watches, and bezel inserts for divers and chronographs. I think it would help give us a better idea of how big or small a watch will appear on wrist. Great review as always, btw!
Agree. I've seen reviews where they say applied markers on the new Samurai when I'm pretty sure they're stamped. The lume is still good and just the fact some people think they're applied shows they did a good job. Also agree on dial size vs. case size. A pet peeve of mine is luxury watches that increase case size, but movement (and dial) size stay the same. It makes the bezel look to thick and the date look like it's creeping to the center.
bought the Pepsi for my dad a few years ago, no sapphire and no hand winding, for about 200 dollars. The lume seems different though, it was blue lume with a green pip.
I picked my Fugu up because I thought it was the most compelling for the price. The military history, the great quality of the case finishing and the solid end links and the 60 click bezel is a joy to play with (I have the older version). Luckily I wear mine loose around the knuckle so the lack of micro adjust is not a big deal for me. Got mine for about 200 USD
I have bought few days ago a citizen ecodrive 200m which has the same size. The crown IS at 4, and 60 clicks on the bezel and fully brushed case, i took the green model which IS really great. The lum IS blue and really good After 20mn. I like it really much, it became my daily watch. Thanks for your videos i am a great fan for a long Time!!! Stay as you are...😎😎😎
The Fugu’s are great, though I’d pay an extra $50-$100 for an ungraded Miyota movement. Bracelet leaves some things to be desired. I’m confused by the width measurement you provided. My NY0091-83E measures just about 42mm.
Love these divers from citizen! Such a great option for people who want a budget dive watch! The hour markers are really cool! Interesting choice for the hands also I would say!
I'm going to go with FUGU ME I went with the Heimdallr for 150$ a few months back and thinking seriously about a second in the blue dial great value and specs Always enjoy and appreciate your honest reviews Thanks my friend 👍
I have the FUGU ProMaster with the white dial and although the clasp is a stinker, the watch itself is fantastic. Additionally, the Citizen Watch 5 yr warranty is crazy good. I seriously luv mine.
I just chickened out on a FUGU….weeks and weeks I saved and viewed various models. I just could not justify the additional cash for a Promaster LH watch. And ship dates were all over the place! Not to mention that clasp! I ended up buying a LH Pepsi Promaster…non-FUGU. We do have a home in Asia that we go to yearly…when not in lockdown or restricted travels. Maybe our next trip home, I can find one I like. Fugu or not…I have an older Citizen diver that is 12 years old, and looks brand new. This will be my second Citizen. I’m looking forward to it arriving. Great review. Enjoy the watch.
Kudos to you Jody for paying more attention to Citizen! I have five in my collection… That is third in my collection to Casio and Seiko…They have some great watches including the blue Angels editions And the pro master mechanicals and eco Drives…This one is a must have… Thanks for the review!
I have the white dial version on the rubber strap and love it. My lume lasts all night as well so I am not sure what was up with yours. I love Seiko, Citizen and Orient so I am looking forward to the shootout. Nice fair review as usual mate ...
I’ve had my NY0040 with the lume dial for around ten years. I’ve dived with it a few times and whilst it only has a folded link bracelet, it has a ratcheting clasp with loads of adjustment. I recently ordered a Kamasu, but I might look to add this one to my collection in future. Thanks for the review Jodi. Best wishes for the festive season from Scotland 🏴
Im really surprised how much better made my 23 year old ny0040 is than this , especially considering the lume glows brightly and evenly in comparison to this
@@awsomemustang couldn’t agree more. Looking at my NY0040 I would never swap it for the fugu. Better design, diver’s extension.. and a lot more soul to it in my opinion!
Same here my ny0040 from 92 has a better bracelet with security clasp, ratcheting divers extension with plenty of micro adjust. The full lume ny0040 I got 5 years ago has pretty much the same bracelet albeit flared at the lugs however the lume is mental and worth having. I love the ny0040 for it's no nonsense straight forward innocent charm just like the Seiko SKX, in fact I want a blue one next.
Another great review Jody and you hit the nail on the head. A compromised watch which is much too expensive. I've got the smaller NY0040 automatic which is smaller, cheaper and much better in all respects. It cost me just shy of £150 on rubber and came with the 5y warrantee +1y extra for on-line registration - bargain! The watch has hardly change since its launch in 1993 and the current model comes with the improved 8204 hacking movement.
Very nice, I really like to see Citizen get showcased more as I think its a brand that get so easily overlooked compared to orient and seiko. Yeah $400 is a bit steep but I'm sure if you forego the 5 year warranty you could probably knock some off that. Do you happen to know if they make something similar but a bit smaller? Thanks.
Citizen make an "ecodrive" diver in blue and black options which is very similar, same case, similar dial and hands design, which is smaller at 43mm with 48mm lug to lug measurement - it wears significantly smaller on wrist and is very accurate and reliable.
@@mediastarguest I have both, and I think the eco-drive wears bigger. It's not the same case, I prefer the FUGU case which is more curve-y, the eco-drive is a bit more industrial. Both wear great on small wrists though, so I wouldn't worry about that.
Citizen comes so close in so many cases, they could achieve so much more with so little more effort, look at the BN0201-88L, titanium, divers, milled security clasp and sadly mineral crystal… Or the BN0211-09X, monoblock case, sapphire, duratect coated, second hand doesn’t hit the indices… Atleast the eco drives run like a good trained horse!
I actually had that exact watch. It was a lovely watch, but yes, the mineral crystal was an odd choice. It was a flat crystal, so no complexity there, and even at a price of $300, I would have paid the extra $50 for sapphire. I will say one more thing on Citizen: they are obsessed with large watches. EVERY diver they have is at least 43-44mm, which is too big for me, and ultimately why I sold it. I understand that a of people like bigger watches, especially divers, but Citizen's lack of even one single diver around 41-42mm is odd.
Thank you Jody for a GREAT review. As always you give us the good, the bad and the ugly. I can always count on a factual and honest review regardless of which way the dial is going to turn, whether it's good or bad, you give it to us straight and that's why you're over 200k subscribers. Have to admit I do not have a citizen watch yet in my collection. One of these days either you, TGV or MWC will review one that I will just have to have and that will be it. Trying to finalize which watch I'm going to want for Christmas this year but we'll see. Right now I'm leaning towards a Seiko dive watch but we'll see. Love Seiko (thanks to TGV) and I don't have one of their dive watches in my collection. Have five Seiko watches, just not a diver. Thank you for ALL you do for our watch community!
I don't mind Citizen. But I've bought Seiko instead. Maybe the Eco-drive will make its way in my collection someday, but probably not an auto. Cracking review. Hello from a snowy Ohioooo! ❄ 🌨
I 'm so happy to see more Citizen models being brought on youtube, other than the classic promaster. Even among the ecodrivers i can't really name an icon reference. Their all cute, all nice, all eco ... but none of them ever really blew my mind. You grab one just to add an eco drive to the collection. Said so I'd never pick a fugu over a turtle. Sorry Citizen but good work, keep it up!
I kinda like it, I didn't see that one coming lol. I love Citizen's knurled crowns. On a sidenote, to get Citizen's 5 year warranty, you have to buy it from an authorized dealer in your country. Importing it from another country doesn't qualify it for the extended warranty. Love the intro, Jody!
Looking forward to the Citizen/Seiko/Orient comparison. Would be interested in seeing the winner from those three put up against a micro-brand and an Ali Express equivalent as well.
I really like it, the dial is actually pretty good. The movement is not really a hassle and the clasp can be replaced. Given the chance I'm pretty sure I will but it.
This is the new fugu which is bigger in dimensions from the original version since 1989 (42x46x12x20) , this new one also comes with sapphire and 120 clicks bezel, upgraded movement as well…
One of these has been on my list for a everyday watch for ages. It’s just my Vostok keeps on working 😎. I’ll make a mental note to pick one up on a rubber strap. That clasp definitely looks naff. Maybe at the price I should go for an Arnie first which is also on my list😁.
I could get behind this at maybe $350AUD, I'd probably stretch to $400 at most. But I'd be swapping out that clasp first chance I got! I actually quite like the markers, especially that blocky 12 o'clock marker--kinda interesting. And those cute little tips to the 12,6,9 are nice and vaguely Turtle-esque. But I think the clincher for me is perhaps the ugliest set of hands I've seen in some time? Yep, not for me I don't think.
Great review, as usual. If I had a vacancy in my dive watch rotation I would consider this watch a candidate. In a few shots it appears that one of the bracelet pins is sitting proud of the link. Careful with that. It is bound to catch on something or - worse - fall out completely. Usually that happens at the most inopportune time possible.
Just goes to show how much a brand can influence a sale. I'm quite sure you can get a better calibre for a fraction of the price of this if you start looking at Orient, San Martin and Heimdallr etc. Saying that I own 5 Eco drives 1 being a promaster CA0710-82L and they are all in my permanent desk diver rotation 🙂
At this point in time, not having kept up with all Simpsons episodes is actually a blessing. Season 2 was still a good one tho. As for the watch, not really my taste, mostly due to that bezel.
I have both 60 and 120 click bezels on my divers. I do not necessarily consider 120 clicks to be an upgrade. In terms of practical usage, I prefer 60 clicks, as on my Citizen Promaster BN0191-55L and Glycine Combat Sub. I look forward to the Citizen/Orient/Seiko comparison. I have just the one Citizen diver, six Orients (including the Orient Star in the comparison) and no Seiko divers (but two Islanders w/NH36 movements).
Great video Jody… this first watch that you review in a long long time that I actually find myself wanting to buy… My wife even thought that I was over watches already… And so did I… Not anymore!! Ok last minute edit: I just get to the price point… nope!
It's a very good looking diver and certified too. I don't mind no reflectively coating, there's not much sunshine to worry about while diving! The lume however is the problem. That kills it. It doesn't deserve a "Diver's 200m " if it doesn't have exceptional lume. The bracelet is strange but most divers put their watches on a rubber strap anyway.
By far the best version of the Promaster is the titanium NY0100-50XE. Same 42mm case size as the original, solid link bracelet with fully milled clasp with 3 micro adjusts, gorgeous green dial and a nicer handset. I might be being biased though as I own it. 🤣
I'm definitely pro "pocket shot". Should be a regular addition to the reviews! Really looking forward to the Japanese diver showdown now. Those head-to-head videos are always fun to watch.
Jody I have the full lume dial limited edition version from a few years back ny0080-12x, it came on a rubber dive strap and the lume is great. I’ll take a Citizen over a Seiko any day.
A very interesting offering by Citizen that I actually wasn't aware of. There's definitely some potential here, but I do think Seiko and Orient still have a lot more to offer in terms of value, design, and specs
No need at all to apologize for the shorts & T-shirt. They are ackshully highly appropriate. Tell you why: the irises; a classic J-flower often seen in ukiyoe (wood-block prints). You are in good company then, for even the stoutest of samurai might have a men's kimono like your Tee. Carry on!
I prefer the other Citizen diver - ISO certified, ratcheting clasp with on the fly adjustment, same movement, for around the same price. Don't know if it is named though. Also, one of your pins is on its way out (close to the clasp).
Great review I just bought citizen promaster ny0140-80ee review, does someone know what is the main difference between this watch and the fugu line. Mechanism is the same also the sapphire christal and the bracelet but it is cheeper. Thank you in advance!
The Citizen diver to have is the GMT BJ7110 - 89E, I picked one up for $350 and it gets the most wrist time, if you'd like to review it I'd be more than happy to send you mine.
Sorry to see all those issues with this one. Looks like I'll be sticking with my eco-drive version for now. Great shirt choice, though (and hello from Los Angeles)!
Might be a hot take, but as someone who rushed to buy the NY0080-12x cause it reminded him of the NY0040 that I wanted so badly as a kid, I feel a bit shafted when they re-released updated models almost every year, when the first run of the Fugu series was supposed to be "Limited Edition". Really would have loved the same dimension with a Miyota 9000 series movement for an updated releases. Side note, the hour hand on my NY0080, has a slight smudge (like a dark spot, probably not enough layer of lume paint), and Citizen said it did not fall under warranty and I couldn't get it changed.
The Miyota 9015 (although not in this watch) & Bezels-That-Line-Up...So close to leapfrogging Seiko for our affections, and then this PMD with the Shitinova Lume and the Shinola Clasp. An opportunity missed.
I would consider the older limited edition FUGU NY0091-83E. You get a fair amount of Tudor Black Bay and a bit of funky Tudor P01 70150 feel with it. :)
My small wrist is slightly over 8”. So I appreciate when you present watches that exceed 40mm as I find them to small! Thinking your thoughtful wife should enroll you in a weight lifting class for Xmas. A graduate level class of course.😄
Well I like the hand and dial set, beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that. Lume is disappointing, my 30 year old one is good. Time for a ceramic bezel at that price I agree.
Having the stem on the other side is kind of weird. I can see that digging into my arm. And that clasp looks in par with an Ali cheapo. Great review as always!
I’ve had the standard PMD & the Fugu, i sold the Fugu due to the crap lume & i avoid the bracelets for the reasons you mention. I niw have the full lume dial version of the standard PMD which is nice but they left the hands lumed as well so at night all you see is a green disk with black dots, lol, although i do love the watch!

Great video but just not my type of watch. I think you were correct in saying it "feels like an old watch" and just "ok". Great as always Jody.
Poison…
Poison…
Tasty fish!
Concentrate ... Concentrate..
That was a classic episode.
I have the Citizen Promaster quartz and love it. A great grab and go watch on a comfy rubber band at half the price.
Wow, just amazing review here. Relevant features missing on this watch allowing us to decide to buy it or not. Thanks!
I picked the one with gold bezel, sunburst blue dial and blue rubber strap.. Looks awesome..
Nice review, Jody.. Greetings from Indonesia..☺️☺️
I am a Citizen fan, but i would go for the cheaper Ecodrive. Better movement, cheaper and magnificent lume.
I have the eco-drive model Jody & I tend to agree this one isn’t up to previous iterations. Nonetheless I love Citizen watches!👍🏼😎
I have the BN0150-61E with the excellent milled clasp and sliding dive extension, I also put it on a blue version of the watch and it really works.
Really cool dial and handset on this one. I even like the day/date integration.
Great video Jody… this first watch that you review in a long long time that I actually find myself wanting to buy…
My wife even thought that I was over watches already… And so did I…
Not anymore!!
Ok last minute edit:
I just get to the price point… nope!
That clasp Jody, shocking. At that price Citizen can fugu right off!
I really like this one, but hard to come by in Canada. They really push Eco-drive up here, but not so much their mechanical stuff.
Nice video. Can the clasp be replaced with a Strapcode offering?
was planning to get zelos sword fish but it was sold out already good thing i see this this will be my christmas gift to myself :)
Good review. You should do an 8 o'clock crown diver comparison.
I audibly went "woah" when you pulled out the dive tank
Great review I just bought citizen promaster ny0140-80ee review, does someone know what is the main difference between this watch and the fugu line. Mechanism is the same also the sapphire christal and the bracelet but it is cheeper. Thank you in advance!
I wanted to love this watch. It's nice, just....
Thank you for the great review 🙂👍
Hey, what do you think of the Citizen BN0220 oder the BN0228?
I have a Citizen Ecodrive B873-S057892 ... they are chunky but i love the way they look
The Citizen diver to have is the GMT BJ7110 - 89E, I picked one up for $350 and it gets the most wrist time, if you'd like to review it I'd be more than happy to send you mine.
Citizens are underrated. I had the pro diver for a bit but gave it to my buddy as a gift.
The red fucku was my favorite
They got rid of the underpants 12 o'clock index. Did love my old NY0087-13EE - cheap at chips, all lined up, super finishing
I never picked up on that before, but now that you mention it I can't un-see it! Clear as day. Underpants. 😂
I quite like it, a bit expensive, terrible clasp, love the dive tank packaging and crown location, great logo on the back
Another great video 👍
Sorry to see all those issues with this one. Looks like I'll be sticking with my eco-drive version for now. Great shirt choice, though (and hello from Los Angeles)!
I have the Heimdallr that was inspired by this one. Absolutely love it, it's my daily.
Jeez, they're using the same clasp as on the Skyhawk Blue Angels. I think it's fine on that watch, but not on a diver, totally agree with you.
Absolutely Great review! Thanks!
Not a bad one, but no way in the game when thinking about a (next) promaster! Thanks for the review Jody!
Citizens in my experience do tend to have fantastic lume.
Can it be ISO certified without a dive extension on the bracelet? I personally could care less about the extension, but I'm curious...
What's everyone's lug to lug preference? I find my sweet spot is around 48mm.
If I am going for citizen I will always go for eco-drive
Please look at the Baltany 42mm 300 mtr diver w/nh38...the lume is outstanding and the case is the best I've seen.
My small wrist is slightly over 8”. So I appreciate when you present watches that exceed 40mm as I find them to small! Thinking your thoughtful wife should enroll you in a weight lifting class for Xmas. A graduate level class of course.😄
Just got the green on green stainless steel ....love it so far
Was the lume a qc issue. It was just so much brighter on some parts of the hands then others. Also the loom Pip was still really bright afterwards
Good review Jodi, thx! Could have been a nice watch, 5 year warranty is a benchmark - but poor bracelet and poor lume keep me away...
I’ve wanted a pro master for some time. But so hard to grab one over another seiko 😁
I've never been this early in the comments! Anyone would think I looked forward to these videos.. :-)
Ha! Thanks for watching the channel Mark.
