I have the RED bezel version of this Promaster FUGU Collection and I simply love it! The bezel design is really nice and the grip feels good, also the lovely puffer fish 🐡 on the back is very cool! For this price point to have a sapphire crystal and 200 meters of water resistance with ISO certification is something else… well done CITIZEN 👏🏻
Being a NAUI Certified diver since 1979 and a USA Swim Coach since United States Swimming was formed, you would think I would have a dive watch, but I don't! This Citizen Promaster looks like it would fit in my budget, and I do like the different look of the bezel.
I like these, but I really like the Eco-Drive Divers. When I think Citizen, I think phenomenal solar quartz movements. Give me a sapphire crystal on one of those and it’s a home run tool watch.
Closest option, though not strictly a diver, is the Citizen pro master land PMD56-2952.. proper tool watch style. 39mm. Titanium. Downsides: JDM, bit funky to get the radio-control feature to work outside Japan.
Considering the fact that citizen dive watches crush at depths far below their rating in pressure tests, saphire isn't necessary. It would just needessly jack the price up.
@@MercilessGuitar151 Crush might not be the best word to use there! Lol. But you're right!! It does add to the cost. I suppose the sapphire is really just for the anti scratch resistance. I dive myself and have a couple of Citizens, the mineral glass on one of them is fine but the other one took a big scratch across the face from a rock outcrop. I was able to change it out, but for divers scrabbling around on the ocean floor, sapphire is offering that extra protection.
I have the Promaster ecodrive version. Great watch, love everything about it. This looks like it would wear too big for a small wrist, but definitely have to give Citizen lots of love and respect.
These look pretty nice, and I'm liking the 8204 movement. I own the original 8203 equipped Promaster, probably from the 90s, and it does look very similar, so I probably won't be rushing out to get one of these, but it's nice to see Citizen listening to the enthusiasts.
Sweet watch. Need a 40 to 42 mm. As a tech Diver I logged over 200 deep dives with citizen. Every serious or wanna be diver I knew had one of the various models with built in depth gauge!
This video is great man! As a workin man I am not going to be buying multi thousand dollar watches (the absolute most I would ever spend on a watch is around $1000 give or take). Its nice to see you covering a brand like citizen who makes quality, dependable, and nice watches for the workin man. Much appreciated Sir 👍 and yes I am a fan of Citizen watches obviously heh.
I have just recently purchased an eco drive watch; the Promaster sailhawk, and it is just amazing. I am a dive instructor so all the functions, especially the timer are super useful to me. I feel just as confident diving with it as a true diver, it is so awesome.
I’m very happy to be a proud owner of an NY0040 with fully lumed dial. It has an 8204 movement with hacking & hand winding. For me, it’s 42mm diameter is a perfect size.
I got the 42mm Fugu in 2018, I haven’t had a better driver on my 6.5” wrist, it’s just perfect with slender lugs and that non-angular case shape that just melts on the wrist. I wouldn’t swap it for a 44mm for sure.
I bought the NY0040 black dial and full lume dial, both under $200. Seikos may look more attractive at first, more flashy. But Citizen, once you acquire a taste for them, I think have a more understated and timeless beauty, The black dial of the NY0040 is so legible, and a beautiful inky, glossy deep black. The full lume is nice, on a generic bracelet, but it is less legible, as Teddy said, it blends in with the dial. The Fugu, actually has more legible hands, longer and with a more defined outline. Both the Fugu and NY0040 series have a case larger than the bezel of 1 or 2 millimeters. So the actual dial look smaller than expected. I had the SKX007 years ago, but I did not like the flat hour markers and dial. The NY0040 looks more interesting. I have the Eco-Drive BN0151, which is nice and has a better bezel. But the dial of the automatic watches is definitely nicer. The Seiko watches I really like retail for $1000 or so, I find Citizen's offerings in the sub 500 USD more appealing.
Nice review Ted. About time someone like you gave the Citizen brand a recognition it deserves and putting it on the collectors/enthusiasts map. I just recently held a few of these divers in my hands at my local jewellers and they feel no less in quality and quantity than its various Swiss and Japanese counterparts. While I got you could you please do a review on SEIKO PROSPEX SPEEDTIMER SRQ037J1? Would be interested in your thoughts. Cheers mate.
I have the NY0040. Most accurate watch I have. Very tough too. I like the upgrades, but mine has the 8204, and the mineral crystal has not scratched. Yet. I ordered a new strap.
Great Citizen's diver review. Comparison with other Japanese diver manufacturers was spot on. Condensed and precise description of Citizen watch company, what it is and what it could be potentially. Thanks Teddy
I picked up a titanium version of their smaller watch that they only sell in Europe. Such a sleeper watch, for sure. Can't wait to see what Citizen has in store as they start to fill out there. Automatic dive watch market!
I have the Eco-Drive. These look great. Clean dial, no ugly PADI logo like on the Seiko. Citizen should offer some color variations and sapphire for the eco-drive.
I think Citizen targeting enthusiasts is great. I love the Toyota motors cars and I love Nissian Cars. It will help to calm Seiko rising prices too. It is more fun to have Nissian 240sx, 300z, 370z, Skyline GTR and Toyota Supra, LFA, MR2, Celica, and GR86 on the market.
I bought this a while back from Singapore and I've been fairly happy with my purchase. The lume is excellent and the only thing I didn't like is the strap. I changed it with a silicon rubber strap I got from Amazon and it feels more comfortable to wear vs the original straps.
Well, actually I bought a Ny0040, and it is hackable. There is a generation of Ny0040, between 2020 and 2021, that included the movement 8204, instead of the non-hackable 8203. Although the movement is different, on the dial it says 8203, I guess they had extra dials and cases and built a few of them.
Ditto, my NY 0040 hacks as well for the reasons you stated, and at 42mm (actually just about 41.5!) is a better fit for my wrist. I tried the new one at a watch store Saturday - very nice but I'm good with my 0040 which is just the right size.
6 weeks ago I received this very nice watch in titanium. At + 120 seconds per day, it ran too fast. Unfortunately it will take at least 8 weeks until I get my watch back from Citizen Service Center. I hope!
Great watches. I have the white dial version Fugu and love it even if it doesnt hack. ( 8203) I noticed the green dial version in your review was a 8203 movement as well. ( unless it was just on the dial ) Good review thank you ..
In my opinion, Citizen needs to limit the use of 8 series movements to lower end watches, maybe $250 max. They should be putting 9 series movements in these watches. Frankly, if I were running Citizen, I'd completely phase out the 8 series movements and fully invest in the 9 series to increase production and in turn, lower the cost. Sure, the 8 series movements are technically on par with Seiko's 4R movements, but Citizen should over deliver by using the 9 series. There's not the same brand equity for Citizen automatics as for Seiko automatics, so going with a superior movement would help steal sales from Seiko. Also, the size seems too big. I'd expect that Citizen will be adding to it's offerings to better attract those preferring more moderately sized watches. All of that said, it is great to see Citizen returning to automatics in the US.
Strongly disagree, the 8 series is literally one of the most robust, most proven movements in the world,it's been around since 1977 and most users report excellent accuracy and incredible durability
This looks great, a few drawbacks, but great. For one at over $500 I'd have liked to have seen a milled clasp. I'd also like to see a smaller version as well, especially for those of us who like the styling though can't accommodate a watch this size. Fantastic work with the review and it's nice to see more affordable pieces on the channel.
Just buy the older version. It's 41.5mm and cost around £150. There are some for £172 on Amazon t the mo & some on ebay for £180. I got mine for £163 Jan with the 8204 movement
Excellent review Teddy, good looking watches, I have a couple of the older ones and still in regular diving use. Sapphire is adding to the price as someone here mentioned, but having scratched one of mine on a rock outcrop I think on balance the extra cash to get sapphire is a good idea. Still, they are probably leaning a bit towards the expensive side for what they are. I imagine that deals will be available further down the road, so might not be necessary to pay full retail. I got a $110 off a Seiko Prospex with sapphire recently in a Seiko AD in Istanbul (fully lined up, I only buy Seiko's I can inspect!) so it might be worth waiting a bit to see if any bargains appear.
The review I've been waiting for. As a Citizen fan with a BN0150 and a BJ7111-51M in my collection, I was keen to see Teddy's review. On the whole, I like the look of this new range, however, upgrade the crystal and downgrade the clasp is a mistake. I think I'd struggle with the accuracy too, my Citizen Quartz models and my 16 year old Planet Ocean beat it. The one I'm really looking forward to is the Citizen Challenge Diver, which I believe is being released in the summer.
Great video as always! Functionality wise, Citizen makes the best watches. A proper tool for diving with all of the features and specs of their Aqualand line.
Aqualand watches include current and max depth gauges, plus rapid ascent warnings, unlike regular diver watches (including the basic Promasters). I have a Hyper Aqualand, and 30th Anniversary Aqualand. Both used for diving.
@@originalkk882 Owned several C500s, 5810/11/12, 3740/5 and two BN2038-01L. No other brand gives you these verity of options to choose with various functions!
Absolutely. All Citizen Promaster Divers are ISO certified and they have divers in the repertoire that are professional dive watches. They also have pilot watches that are functional as pilot watches and hiking watches like the Altricon. Nobody does functionality like Citizen.
They really need to put the highbeat 9015 movement in these to get more sales to watch enthusiasts. Got the quartz instead as it is just as jerky as the 8200 movement and is more accurate being quartz.
I've got a promaster diver eco drive, blue dial. Love love love it. Think citizen promasters and seiko propex are great watches for everyday users. The luxury watch, I own an oyster perpetual from 1971. Its a beauty but its mostly a safe queen unless there is a wedding or a special event.
Just picked one up today. Honestly as a first real watch (my father gave me his Rolex but my cousin stole and pawned it) it doesn’t feel too bad. I’m thinking omega next.
@@karldergrosse-333 Omg LOL!!! glad to hear that your father got his money back but still tho I think your dad should've punched him in the face once for what he did xDD
Are these the new edition? I've seen these watches for a few years now, but I never knew they have sapphire glass. When I looked at Citizen's website, they do bear different ref. number, with a pretty significant price jump also. Way more expensive than the "comparable" Seiko Prospex.
Finally bought one Black dial and case. Its not bad but I had to put it on a black Nato strap. Its strange having the winder at 8. I have small wrists but it wears and looks well. I still love my Seiko vintage Turtle (1977 )
I have the Coke NY0085 with a jubilee bracelet from Long Island Watches as my daily beater. With the diameter of nearly 42 mm it has the perfect size for me. I'm good with the mineral crystal, and when i want a sapphire, there's already one in the watchbox to replace the mineral. But i like the the bigger Fugu very much, great dial.
I like the green dial version but not crazy with the bracelet. There is an aftermarket bracelet made for the NY0040. As they are both 20mm wonder if the pin placement is close enough to swap bracelets. Yes, it is as the new bracelet fit without any issues. Has screw in links and 3 micro adjustments. Great upgrade from the stock bracelet and get a better fit. Have been wearing this watch for a few weeks now and like that the crown is at 8 o'clock.
Teddy - what is the second language on the day wheel on these? Kinda bummed that I bought limited edition fully lumed dial fugu NY0138-14X not long ago and then they basically release the same watch (NY0155-58X).
What if i wanted the red bezel with a bracelet? I am not a fan of rubber strap but would love the red bezel option. Or better yet... id love the black stainless with a red dial or red bezel. This color combo needs to be more common
Brilliant, thank you Teddy. I have one of these and it's just great, along with my NY0040 and several Eco-Drives that are just so brilliant as pick up and run watches, Citizen make great watches, but for some reason seem to be over looked in favour of some higher profile brands?
It doesn't look like they're listening because they had a great watch with the 42mm Fugu, they just needed to slap sapphire on it. Instead they came out with this bigger 44mm version and didn't extend the seconds hand to the chapter ring, instead they left a big gap between it and the chapter ring, unlike the 42mm version which has no gap.
Great review I just bought citizen promaster ny0140-80ee review, does someone know what is the main difference between this watch and the fugu line. Mechanism is the same also the sapphire christal and the bracelet but it is cheeper. Thank you in advance!
I'm definitely going to look at these and he'll I'll probably grab one some day, but do all diver's HAVE to be 44mm cases? I wish seiko or citizen would make a 40mm diver like the zelos mako v3
Teddy big fan , bought prx 80 blue , oris date relief , rado true secret, just after watching your reviews, just trying to start a "collection" as Mr Kevin would say lol great dou , very much inspired with watches now , just one request if possible will you consider to review my both other watches other than prx so I can admire them more just watching your review again and again, much love , thanks a lot brother for great content 🌝
Yeah...they got everything right but the size. Come on, just use your 41mm 20mm lug width case! The original 41mm ProMaster wears so good, and way better than the SKX or Seiko 5. As it is, at 44, I have no interest in it. Like at all.
I agree. Looking at all these reviewers praising these things, and it's like... They literally had the perfect sized watch case for a diver and they beefed it up for no reason. So that makes me not interested in it at all. If they had kept the original dimensions I probably would have gotten one.
Hey y'all some of us just have larger wrists than you do and really do appreciate the existence of larger divers. I wear a 43mm diver and it fits me about the same as a 40mm diver fits the slender wrists of the average watch reviewer. Just because it isn't for you doesn't mean it's for no one.
@@thomasdavis8117 And you have plenty of options. Mainstream options. Just when watches were starting to get smaller, here they go getting bigger again. And what makes this worse is they took away a 41mm option and replaced it with a 44. The market quite simply is oversaturated with divers catering to your wrist size. Citizen had a perfectly sized one, they just lacked colors and specs. When they finally release a model with colors and updated specs, gone is the perfect size and it's beefed up. That's the issue.
@@caomhan84 there is no such thing as a perfect size as there is so much variation in taste and wrist size and I would argue the market leans towards 40mm divers in the style of the submariner more than it does for large divers. I'm sorry this watch isn't for you but there are literally so many options for 40mm divers and fewer than you think in this size. Again just because it isn't for you doesn't mean that there aren't people out there who appreciate the upsize.
@@thomasdavis8117 I'll have to disagree with you about where the market is trending. Because I've observed over the last 20 years where it's gone and it's definitely gone larger. Again, my issue is less with this being a size "for me" and more about them deleting a size and replacing it with a bigger one. Which has been a trend in almost every company from Seiko to Omega and even Rolex (Even the submariner has gotten beefy in the last 7 years). When I said mainstream options, I mean mainstream companies that are easy to buy from. Microbrands don't really count because they aren't easy to buy from. Micro brand watches are not readily available.
I bought a brown dial variant a little over a year ago. These really are solid tool watches and are versatile. The brown dial, on a leather strap is quite handsome and I received a few compliments because of that. These possess their own, distinct style and put Seiko to shame. Best of all, these are the preferred tool of some well-known, hard-core military units. Even better, I've never had to worry about proper bezel alignment.
'Even better, I've never had to worry about proper bezel alignment.' So true! 🤣After buying a SKX007 and SKX013 both with crooked bezels I threw up my arms and sold them. I'm so scared of these Seiko QC problems I bought an Orient Kamasu instead. These Citizens look really nice and I'd like to have a look at one in flesh, could be my next purchase.
As always a brilliant video, but why have you never talked about TITAN a watch company with more than 25 Billion USD in market Cap and with revenues close to 3 billion.
I really like the looks of these especially the black on the bracelet. Perfect size for me too. Also like that they are ISO Certified. Does anyone know of the quartz version is ISO Certified as well? I assume that it is…
Teddy, most of the marketing material reference 8 new models. But the website only lists 7. Some of the promo images show an option with a white face and black bezel ( it's not the lum-faced model). What is this ghost model? Why can't I find it? I think it's the most handsome version.
I recently got a brand new Promaster Fugu. Pretty disappointed in the movement as the rotor keeps spinning with just a flick of the wrist... is that normal for citizen automatics? I got a asia limited edition titanium & paid a premium over the regular versions & the movement is worse than my seiko 5

Nice touch seeing a well loved Griptillian in the end shots!
Always loved Promaster over SKX
The review I've been waiting for. As a Citizen fan with a BN0150 and a BJ7111-51M in my collection, I was keen to see Teddy's review. On the whole, I like the look of this new range, however, upgrade the crystal and downgrade the clasp is a mistake. I think I'd struggle with the accuracy too, my Citizen Quartz models and my 16 year old Planet Ocean beat it. The one I'm really looking forward to is the Citizen Challenge Diver, which I believe is being released in the summer.
I’m pleased to have the eco-drive diver in my rotation but theses automatics are tempting. Thanks
I am getting the eco-drive also. I do like 8 o’clock of the stem though.
I’ve got a Citizen Excalibur eco drive diver. Great watch with a fantastic ratchet clasp.
42mm with 20mm lug width?
While they came running, they essentially fell down 5 yards from the finish line by not using the 9015 movement...what a shame.
good old Citizen
Love it! Unfortunately, I'm left handed. So that crown would definitely dig into my right hand.
Just picked one up today. Honestly as a first real watch (my father gave me his Rolex but my cousin stole and pawned it) it doesn’t feel too bad. I’m thinking omega next.
Wtf??!? you should sue that little sh**
@@jakerayyan my father did recoup his money. He made him paint a 4500 square foot office building haha.
Way more expensive than the "comparable" Seiko Prospex.
not all come with sapphire crystal. get the 4th generation or some limited edition.
That red bezel model is calling to me.
Love the content. Can you review the new Timex Expedition North field watches?
Finally bought one Black dial and case. Its not bad but I had to put it on a black Nato strap. Its strange having the winder at 8. I have small wrists but it wears and looks well. I still love my Seiko vintage Turtle (1977 )
Could you do a review on the Tag Heuer Aquaracer professional 300m 36 mm….awesome videos as always!!
Thanks, Teddy! You teach us something new every video!
Just a note: Orient did make some ISO rated divers, I would have to check if they still do but they are out there somewhere.
Nice review, Teddy, thank you 👍🙂. Warming up to this watch.
Love it! Been waiting for a review of this watch! I love 44+ inch watches since I don't have baby wrist like most people apparently 🤣
All looks fabulous 🤗
Thanks! Looking forward your review of Longines Spirit Zulu Time.
What if i wanted the red bezel with a bracelet? I am not a fan of rubber strap but would love the red bezel option. Or better yet... id love the black stainless with a red dial or red bezel. This color combo needs to be more common
You'd have to order the bracelet direct.
Brilliant, thank you Teddy. I have one of these and it's just great, along with my NY0040 and several Eco-Drives that are just so brilliant as pick up and run watches, Citizen make great watches, but for some reason seem to be over looked in favour of some higher profile brands?
I just purchased the Asia Limited model with white dial. It's quite a nice watch.
Fugu looks very cute.
Cutie pie
Great review I just bought citizen promaster ny0140-80ee review, does someone know what is the main difference between this watch and the fugu line. Mechanism is the same also the sapphire christal and the bracelet but it is cheeper. Thank you in advance!
I'm definitely going to look at these and he'll I'll probably grab one some day, but do all diver's HAVE to be 44mm cases? I wish seiko or citizen would make a 40mm diver like the zelos mako v3
These dial designs are solid! Should have come out a bit smaller though
Great review Teddy.
Some of the ny0040 of that later years for some reason came with the 8204 hacking movement which was very weird
Están hermosos dónde se pueden comprar ? En Amazon..
your video is very dense with information. good job.
however, why no bezel action sound?
Of course, good review, Teddy. I like the 8 o’clock stem.
Great video 🔥. Thanks to you I’m learning a lot about watch 🙏🏻
Is It for wearing on the right hand ?
Hi,what do you think about citizen bm7570-80L? Does it worth it?
diving extension and quick adjustment clap - citizen you can do it
I bought a brown dial variant a little over a year ago.
@@angelos6817 I think you'll be really happy with what they have to offer. Seiko was a huge disappointment.
GOT MINE FOR $330 a few months ago. Did I get a good deal?
Glow cookie is my fave.
That gold and silver 👌👌
As always a brilliant video, but why have you never talked about TITAN a watch company with more than 25 Billion USD in market Cap and with revenues close to 3 billion.
One of the best watches for the price!! 🤟😘🎅🌲🕯️🕯️🕯️
I really like the looks of these especially the black on the bracelet. Perfect size for me too. Also like that they are ISO Certified. Does anyone know of the quartz version is ISO Certified as well? I assume that it is…
“Diver’s” on the dial means ISO certified
@@J0hnny8ravo thanks!
Teddy, most of the marketing material reference 8 new models. But the website only lists 7. Some of the promo images show an option with a white face and black bezel ( it's not the lum-faced model). What is this ghost model? Why can't I find it? I think it's the most handsome version.
I read that it’s a field exclusive for small independent stores
Perfect watch .
44mm is perfect!!
I wish for Citizen to make the NY series again, just like the 90s to 2010s.
Still being made new, outside the US though.
Is the fully lumed black one sold out yet?
I recently got a brand new Promaster Fugu. Pretty disappointed in the movement as the rotor keeps spinning with just a flick of the wrist... is that normal for citizen automatics? I got a asia limited edition titanium & paid a premium over the regular versions & the movement is worse than my seiko 5
Hello Omer. Asslamo Alikum, what is the model number of your watch? infact i am getting this watch here in pakistan. So i want your recommendation. Thanks
My Fugu doesn't do that. Probably is damaged
Great video
Nice info
Hey grand seiko makes watches with quartz movement i thought they were all automatic since its the luxury brand of seiko the grand seiko limited edition sbqp015 blue dial its 3800 its a quartz movement
