- This is my opinion on why the Citizen NY0040 and other NY00 models are above and beyond the Seiko SKX.
Three models are discussed here
NY0086-83 PEPSI DIAL
NY0040-17 BLUE DIAL
NY0040-50 FULL LUME WITH (HACKING MOVEMENT)
Thank you! The NY0040 is far superior to the SKX007. Better in quality and accuracy. Even the dial is of a higher quality.I think it's way better looking too.
There is no better watch for the money than a Citizen Promaster.
Mmmm I think it's a matter of preference. Quality, maybe. Accuracy, I think about the same as 7S26. The dial on the NY is glossy and on the SKX matte. I think that's important because gloss can affect legibility in bright situations and distract, whereas matte stays legible and unobstructed. I do agree the bezel action and design is just gorgeous on the NY. My only gripe is that clicking spring when bezel is pressed down. Other than that, NY and SKX are just both fantastic watches.

The thing is that nobody buys an SKX for its specs or price anymore. People now buy it for its history significance and collectability. They're regarded as vintage pieces now and righteous so. The same thing will happen (one can say it is already happening) to all the NY0040 variants.

@@seikoskx you could argue that this Citizen is also vintage. These were released in 1997 and have real military pedigree from the Italian Navy. Both to me are icons, just one more popular than the other. 👍

That's why I bought my SKX 007. For some reason, I never got one when they were available.

I've bought 4 Citizens, which I hope makes up for a lifetime of ignoring them. They are affordable and have a sense of style of their own.
I stopped buying Citizen during the mid ‘90s and moved onto Omega, Rolex, Panerai, Sinn, Doxa, and Zodiac. That said, I’ve recently rediscovered Citizen, having purchased two Aqualands and an Ecozilla!
These Citizens are awesome! I have 4 already! The Pepsi bezel, Coke bezel, green bezel and full lume. All hack except for the Pepsi model. I think I bought an older version. All I got under $200 and with the metal bracelet. Love how they have variety in colors. Very cool divers for the money!
The Coke and Green versions have a deep black dial color that the applied indices look like they are floating!
I also think these are better than the SKX, but the downside is that these Citizens don't have a mod community to back them and there's no decent solid end-links bracelet option. Hope someone can make them at some point.

Long Island watches now has a solid endlink metal bracelets for NY00 watches. Technically, it's for NY0040, but they all share the same case. It should fit. And it's only $60
I've got the black, the blue dial and the full lume and I love them all. But I also love the skx...
The NY0040 has a huge advantage over the SKX: it's still available at totally rational prices. The other thing that attracts my attention is that this Citizen has handwinding, which cuts that boring "morning shake" demanded by the respectable but limited 7S26. The SKX isn't bad, but isn't on par either.

I’m a Seiko fanboy, but not a hater of other brands. I have a wide variety of about 20 watches. Most are military and divers.
I just picked 2 NY0040’s. One is a 8203 vintage and the second is brand new from Jomashop 8204. The 8203 has been modded with the NY2300 dial, hands and bezel insert.

I think youre 100% correct in your assessment about the Seiko vs Citizen. Ived owned probably 25 or more Seiko Divers and maybe 10 or so Citizens. For the money I do believe the Citizens are of the same quality as even the 2x cost as much Seikos. All that with less factory deviances too. Like accuracy, beat error, dial alignment, etc. I just received the full lume Ny 40-50. Man, what a shocker. Also love the factit was used by the Italian military. Probably selling my pepsi mako 2 now.. Lol. Really though. Citizen is the new Seiko.
I have the older full lume dial version, so mine doesn't hack. Yes, I think these are better than the Seiko SKX, despite the SKX being more popular (I'm a lefty, so maybe I'm biased). 😉 Island Watch is now selling a jubilee bracelet specific for these models too, with solid fitted end links.
Seiko may have the largest fanbase, but Citizen often has better value for money, and a very impressive range of excellent watches, if you care to take a closer look. My favourite: Citizen BN0100-42E Excalibur for under €180

Well I finally added the NY0086 Pepsi Fugu to my collection. Definitely an awesome watch and loving it . I still prefer my SKX009 but this watch is amazing in its own way 👍🏻💯
I wanted an SKX but the price was a none starter, at one point I really just considered mod frankensteining one then I saw the NY-0040 and fell in love, managed to snag a godzilla edition of the ny-0080 as well

Great video! I've got the blue sunburst and full lume dial....both 8203 dials with 8204 hacking movements....these are my beaters....love them....I have a ton of 20mm straps and with these 2 watches I get to swap them out. I've also contacted Uncle a few months ago for a bracelet and endlinks....a jubilee would be killer!

I also recently switched to Citizen as my number one. Much better quality for the money than Seiko. My last five watch purchases have been Citizen.

The beezle is like it is to be able to keep working even if it might get gunked up a bit, so it's a design feature.

It beats it by a mile! I've always preferred Citizen over Seiko. Ive got two of these Citizen divers and I recently added a sapphire crystal to them both for extra piece of mind plus the domed sapphire just looks so cool...

Agree citizen is so underated and seiko is overated especially with their crazy price points with shitty movements!
I have 5 watches with Miyota movements and they are all more accurate than any Seiko I’ve ever owned.

I got my full lume for $200. Great and unique watch. I'm not a fan of the bracelet because of its pressure clip links, but i do have the same straight end jubilee for it!
My blue dialed NY0040-17L will arrive in the mail today. I'm crossing my fingers that I get lucky and get the 8204 movement...but I'll still be happy if I get the 8203.

Yep you put a Citizen on a Jubilee and get a better watch less than half the price of a used SKX

I have and like both. Citizen has some great value.
I've had both citizen and Seiko. I've noticed the lume on citizen is inconsistent on some models, Seiko seems to have a better quality lume.
I’ve emailed Uncle Seiko about the curved end links hopefully he will come up with a solution.

@@mikaeljonsson4686 I'm currently wearing it on mine! Only negative thing is that the endlinks have a slightly different brushing (vertical) in comparison to the case lugs (circular), so you might notice that. Otherwise, it's very comfy and looks good.
After wearing my Seiko SKX007 and my SKX009, I got one of these NY0040-09E because I was curious. Let's just say they're both equally as enchanting in their own right. I think I'll wear them both. They're so similar yet worlds apart. I especially like the bezel on the NY0040, it ratchets like a dream. Since I put a 4R36 in my 009, I can handwind and hack. Maybe there's a Miyota I can upgrade the NY0040 with.
Citizen have upgraded the movement to 8204 which has hack and handmovent note the dial might say 8203 but in the back 8204
@@Ritzasone Yes but I'm having trouble sourcing that upgraded Miyota movement. Also my NY has a rotor that is LOUD. I hope I didn't get a lemon and that's just how the movement is!!

Something about that bezel design I don't really like. Reminds my of a beer bottle cap. The rest of the watch looks great though.

These are definitely awesome citizens watches . As far as comparing these citizens to Seiko its not really a matter of which is better as it is preference. I wouldn’t mind adding the Pepsi citizens you have but I own the SKX009 and I’m never parting ways with that watch . I’d also add that Seiko is definitely my favorite watch brand and I’m not done with them as a brand . Seiko and Orient are definitely my watch of choice 👍🏻
Absolutely hit the nail on the head. It's a matter of preference. Citizen, Seiko, and Orient make incredible watches in terms of reliability. Durability and performance is another praise altogether. But you're right. You'll have to take my SKX007 off my cold dead wrist.

True, but I doubt the SKX 013...I have a Citizen NY0040 similar model not a Pepsi...which I dislike... The only issue I have with it is the Day Date Complication should have been White . I didn't realize till I received it and only kept it because of the overall design, which I love. But will be buying SKX O13 or a good version of a Diver with only White background for Day Date and IMO as I need the Day Complication if the Diver doesn't have it isn't for me at all. And I prefer a case that's 12mm but will settle for 13, if push comes to shove.

SKX was a great watch when it was in the $200 price range. Now the prices are getting crazy and in my opinion they are not worth it for all the great watches you can get for what they are going for. If someone really likes the SKX style I suggest checking out Long Island watches. They make a ton of SKX style watches with the 4R36 (hacking) and sapphire crystal and better bracelet. All the aftermarket mod parts fit as well. In any ways LIW is superior to SKX. All that being said, I love SKX011 and will never sell it.

Nice watches, you should check out Orient Neptune and Orient Kamasu too, pretty cool SKX alternatives.
My NY0040 plus 6 sec avg a day.
The citizen beats the skx because you can actually buy one for retail or less.
Oh THAT kills the SKX? Naw, you can just get a new 4R36 movement and new crown and SKX will hack/handwind. No issue at all and the upgrade would only cost you $150-200 or so. SKX and NY are just both great watches.

Wish citizens would make a new diver bc they good watches..just seiko kills them in the diver market..they have like 50 diver watches and grand seiko vs 8 citizen divers

@coldpizzawatchreviews4276 What a bummer. I picked up the citizen titanium diver (NB6021-68L) which is the blue dial. It comes on a decent bracelet. The black dial only comes on a rubber strap. I have a 20mm bracelet from an old eco drive diver. Maybe that would fit the nyb case.

Here’s the thing - having owned both the Citizen and the SKX you can arguably say that Citizen watches are better built and finished at the lower hundreds price point - from the thousand dollar price point Seiko has it nailed nowadays and leave citizen behind thereafter - however, for those of us who can’t afford a mid / higher end Seiko and still want an icon a SKX or a Turtle give us just that - a true icon - Citizen? Great watches but lack the charm and character
It's true that Citizen doesn't have the same prestige as Seiko. But I do think the NY is slept on. The NY is a great watch, but the SKX totally stole everyone's heart.
Not sure Seiko "leaves Citizen behind" at upper price tiers. Do you own, or have you ever handled, higher-end offerings from both? (They're equivalent, in my opinion, each with their own strengths.)

The NY0040 was hardly "developed for the Italian navy" - it was merely acquired by it. The Promaster has been my favourite everyday watch for decades due to its known superior accuracy, its quasi-military, unobtrusive, tool watch style and also its nowadays rare, reasonable size. Disadvantage: Matching aftermarket bracelets are virtually inexistent and the original ones quite suck. I don’t understand why people keep comparing it to a phantasy Seiko that doesn’t even exist.

Meitoia movement is what citizens own..seiko uses 4r36 and old 7s26 as cheep tuff movement..my 20 year old skx non serviced and abused runs 5min fast per month to b honest...newer one 4r36 is 1min almost dead on

Some people prefer Dodge still. Because they are cheap people and can't admit they get what they pay for.
Its an unfair comparison. The SKX price is inflated because its no longer in production and it is at a collector's price. There are other watches out there that I would buy before this Citizen. No sapphire glass is a big deal in today's market. Watches I would buy would before this, Orient Kamasu, Sea-Gull Ocean Star, a ton of San Martin divers, Steeldive Willard homage at half the price of this Citizen. You're going on about the heritage but I don't think anybody cares about the Italian navy.

My skx has no bezel bounce and 120 vs 60 clicks on bezel and the world makes aftermarket parts for skx even new line of non screw down crown 100m same case as skx...hmmmm🤔🤔🤔🤔 I like citizens but 2 me all there divers look stupid..all of them..underpants 12 o clock and all

Leave it to the italians to request that crown placement.
