      I bought all chromax fans for my latest build but if I had this GPU I would have happily gone with the brown versions. I think the biggest issue for me is clashing color schemes. Honestly, the thing I would be most concerned with is that they would never make another collab card again and then I'd be stuck with brown fans with a colorful and/or black GPU and would have to get chromax ones later anyway.

      @@jasonl5433 ^^ This.
      When the MSI 7950 fans died on one of my Crossfire boards, I strapped two NF-12 variants on it, put it in the second slot and called it good. I knew it would work because I had done this on a previous generation NVidia boards in SLI. As a test, I ran one 7950 by itself with this fan configuration and it outperformed anything I had seen tested and was in liquid cooling territory. A side mounted case fan blowing directly over the two GPUs in Crossfire also helped. Hitting 7970 performance was even easier although the stock fans would do it with a noise penalty. I had intended to put the boards under water but there was no point with this approach, and noise was far less than the stock cooling solution.
      Brackets to pull this off have been on the market for many years. It is not a new concept, just not something the major manufacturers have adopted. There are slim fans that work well too (15mm Noctua come to mind).

    • @michaeldinapoli2960
      @michaeldinapoli2960 2 года назад +1

      It's a common hack even in small form factor PCs. Deshroud the GPU and just put 2x120mm fans right by the heatsink. Some cases like the NR200 you don't even have to ziptie the fans, the case naturally puts the fans right there. Can get very competitive temps or even better than ATX builds. No deadspace, all airflow.

      Most people also only have one PCI card installed at a time - a GPU. Might as well make use of the extra wasted space below it. The thicker the better imo. Most atx cases have 7 expansion slots - so that's 5 expansion slots of wasted space in most PCs. You could fit a 120mm tower cooler there if you wanted to, and they should.

    This is something that always confused me. I understand why AIB's make their own cooler shrouds, but I always wished they gave us the option to just screw in regular 120mm fans. The fans the AIB's use are just garbage compared to what is available on the market. It doesn't have to be Noctua specifically. I would love to be able to use BeQuiet fans or Arctic fans or maybe someone wants to use Corsair RGB fans so they can sync it with iCUE easily. The point is even a pair of crappy 120mm fans will be better than the fans the AIBs use. If you want to stick to triple slot cards then consider a thin fan. They'd probably be able to get away with selling fanless editions of their cards for the same price. You, the end user get a better performing card and it's a bit more environmentally friendly as the AIBs aren't using plastics. By shipping a smaller product they can reduce the amount of packaging required by that plastic shroud and fans, while not heavy, the weight adds up saving on shipping costs.

      @@Kirinketsu_ There are a bunch of people in ATX cases where the only thing they have plugged in their PCIe is a GPU. Removing the shroud from the GPU and using standard 120mm fans is also essentially what many people do in the CoolerMaster NR200 anyway. That's an ITX case. And as I said, you could still use thin fans for a triple slot card like the more powerful cards are anyway.
      Also, you don't have to do that. As I said, this would just be an option. If you want a card with a shroud I wasn't going to stop you. I never said to stop making cards with shrouds. Just give us the option to remove the shroud and install standard 120mm fans or let us just buy a card without a shroud.
      The only difference is that the box would have to make it clear a few times that the end user is responsible for installing their own fans.
      I am now realizing why they don't sell GPUs without fans. Users will completely ignore the part where it says they need to install fans and then blame the company for releasing a GPU that doesn't work... Anyway, they could still put 120mm fan mounts on the cards for the more advanced user.

    I love this collab. Brown color aside, the design of the card is less "gamer" and more sophisticated. We need more of that. The comparison is really between the vast majority of video cards, compared to this one that Jay got.

    The Der8auer vid on it was pretty good. Should be a good card for the hand full of people building a PC with it. And zip tieing noctua fans to a GPU is nothing new, LTT has several vids with that done as well as on the L1Tech's forums, I even did it to a GTX 780 when the fan died on it and MSI wouldn't send a replacement. I have never bought Noctua fans for aesthetics, I buy them because they do what it says on the box. although the new Be Quiet fans are pretty close
    watching Jay experience what is basically the best 120mm fan currently being sold is a bit comical. Maybe pick up some Noctua black chromax fans J2C.
