Larry iced in college, had his hand forever changed in college, first got his later career-ending back injury in '85 (before 3 straight MVP's), had both heels operated on to miss most of '89... and really played most of his career with a disc that needed reinserting. That's why Larry could be seen dressed, lying down courtside during games; it wasn't fatigue. He played with all ❤ !

As a Sonics fan, I always dreaded Celtics games because Bird always found a way to kill us. He lived in Xavier McDaniel’s head rent free. He smoked Dale Ellis in the first 3-point contest. Man, I hated that guy! But wow, what a player. The hustle, the craft, and the straight assassin mentality. He out-Jordaned Jordan with his head games. People say the Celtics were loaded, but Bird made those guys all Stars with his unselfish play and the way he led by example. They had like 31 wins the season he was drafted and went to the Eastern conference finals his rookie season. My all time starting 5 is Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Tim Duncan, and Wilt Chamberlain. For the record, I love LeBron James. The rules were different back then...half the crap today's players get away with wasn't even legal back then...palming the ball was just beginning during Birds era, with Magic being the one that really started it, for example. The players bodied up more and used more fakes because they couldn't hold the ball while dribbling...lots of rules have changed or been relaxed under the pretext of being more entertaining. It depends on the role you want SF to play. Definitely a better option to play Lebron at SF for example if you are thinking player for player, scoring output and facilitating, but if you already have an OG point guard and SG in your top 5 then maybe Lebron muddies the waters a little bit.
And so ultimately the top 5 debate comes down to Jordan vs Lebron imo. If Jordan is the SG of your team better going with Bird at SG than Lebron. If Kobe is your SG then go with Lebron at SF.

Larry was funny - he went over to an opposing coach and said - you are disrespecting me. The coach was upset because it was Larry Bird in his face - Larry said you have a white guy covering me, that’s disrespectful. When he fell on the floor, he fracture his jaw and still came back to finish and win the game. Watching Showtime come to down - it was insane - it was war. They made it black and white for ratings - but Bird and Magic feared each other and after Magic did that sneaker commercial and then had lunch at Bird’s mom’s house where his mom said Magic was her favorite player - the friendship started to grow. Remember - they watched each other’s stats - they did not give a crap on how many points - they both cared only on one thing - winning. Magic was amazing and during his inauguration into the Hall of Fame gave the credit to Larry - he said Larry was the reason he was what he was - because the mimic each other. Basketball had a extremely talented league with so many different players. Magic was the one who went after Larry to join the Dream Team in ‘91 olympics games. Larry’s two players he respected the most was Magic and Jordon. Larry commented on Cooper as the best defensive player during his retirement from the Celtics. Larry was not fast and he couldn’t jump but he was mentally focused more than anyone else. Even Jordon learned from Larry in getting under people’s skin. He is one the the greats and he is the only one who beat every one in his area - Bad Boy Pistons, Showtime ( Kareem, Coop, Worthy, Magic), Jordon - swept him and the Bulls, Dominic Wilkins, the X Man, Patrick Ewing from NY, and it goes on and on - and my favorite Charles Barclay from the Suns. Oh Yeah - Dr. J from the 76’s. So much talent during those years and we got to see many good teams battle it out - but - in the end - it was two teams - The Lakers and the Celtics. Still, remember Bill Russell of the Celtics has 11 rings - not even Brady in the NFL can match that.

I grew up watching the Bulls in the 90s and I love their hustle and style. It seemed like a faster, harder, more dynamic game back in the day. I have a soft spot for all those players on the Bulls roster and could pick any of them for my top best of. The players I enjoy watching no matter who they play for are, well of course, Michael Jordan being my top all time favorite. Jordan just always demanded the best from his teammates but always pushed himself harder. Dennis Rodman just flys going for the ball, hits his shots when he goes for it but really dominates defensively. Larry Bird is all around great and it's a surprise because he looks like a big slow player but he is incredibly physical and surgically perfect with his passing, shooting game. I just love to watch Shaquille O'Neal play. He was good at what he did but it was what he was bad at, free throws, that made him fun to watch. Kobe Bryant was another player who was, like Michael Jordan, an all around solid player who could get the best out of his team. He could be joking around and smiling then step up and get this look of challenge in his eyes. I loved the explosiveness of his game.

As others have said, the fan rivalry was regional more than racial. In my mind, Bird and Magic were very similar players. They were about the same size. They were the two smartest players and greatest leaders in the league. Neither was super athletic but I think they were more than athletic enough. What they lacked in lateral quickness defensively was more than made up for by their intelligence and quick hands. Offensively nobody other than the two of them could play every position on the court. Nobody until Lebron that is. Neither had huge hops but they were 6'9". They could get up high enough to dunk over bigger players and they had some of the best post up moves in history. They were both masterful and creative passers. Nobody ran the fast break better than the two of them. They were always improving. Coming into the league, the rap on Magic was he didn't have a jump shot. He quickly put that to rest. And Bird became a better rebounder and a more vocal leader... as well as the most ruthless trash talker ever. But there were so few weaknesses in either of their games that they and their respective teams were able to dominate the league for nearly a decade. I was always a fan of both from their NCAA finals matchup, which Magic's Michigan State team dominated through superior talent around Magic. Their NBA careers were destined to redefine the sport. I'm always happy when younger fans watch these videos and realize how great Larry Bird was. If Magic said he was the best that really means something. He wouldn't just say that. He played *with* Kareem.

My top 5? In alphabetical order: Bird, Erving, Johnson, Jordan. I don't know who I want as my fifth though, because there are several in the next tier of players that I like. But the one thing that is certain is that they'd all be from last century before the game became so weak. You talked about the moves looking rougher in the Bird video compared to the fluidity of the modern NBA. The reason for that is because the entire game was a much rougher, hands on, and sometimes no holds barred battle than modern NBA dancing. LeBron excuses his poor performance by blaming a high ankle sprain (and those are awful. It took a while for me to recover, but I still went to work and did my job through it for a crap ton less money). Bird bounced his head off of the floor, broke the orbital bone around his eyesocket, and then came back from receiving medical treatment in the locker room to help lead his team to victory with double vision.
Speaking of disrespect, Bird was king of the trash talkers and he went off one time about how disrespected he felt when an opposing coach was trying to have a white guy guard him. :-D Bird was a master craftsman and technician. He didn't do anything but spend much of his time trying hone his craft, which is something a lot of the modern era "superstars" should try to do sometime.
Don't take me completely wrong though. There are modern era players I like. Curry, Harden, and the late Bryant are ones I can think of that I admire for their games, but I just can't stand to watch the NBA since the early 2000s.

Larry was easily a top 3 all time NBA player. That comes from his fellow players in the NBA, who he would embarrass on a nightly basis. He may be the best ever.

In terms of Bird's "catching bodies", the game was much more violent back then.

To me it wasn't a black or white thing at all, it was a local thing. He was from this area (Southern Indiana) even if he was playing way over in Boston. In most instances we're more likely to follow college teams here, IU, U of L, UK, we're all about March Madness. Your west coast so it only makes sense you'd support Magic, man.

Also Shaq is the funniest basketball guy. He never fails to make me laugh 🤣

Bird wasn't the most athletic but he had tremendous heart, tremendous IQ, and a complete game. If I had to pick my top 4 players of all time I'd want to have the ball in the last 2 seconds of the game 3. Magic Johnson. 2. Michael Jordan. 1. Larry Bird.

People here have different recollections about Bird & Magic's rivalry, so you'll get many of them claiming that it was never seen as a racial thing. But documentaries about both players' careers have covered the black vs white aspect many times. Highlights include: Lakers players saying that some black fans from Boston rooted for them b/c the Celtics was seen as a white team, some white fans from Boston boasting that a white player is the MVP of a league full of black players, Cedric Maxwell admitting that he initially assumed Bird to be an overhyped white player, Arsenio Hall claiming that the white media credited Bird for all of the Celtics' success even when the latter didn't play, etc...

A lot of rule changes happened between 92 and 98. Some of them were considered 'Jordan' rules to protect certain players. Others were to protect fairness after the 'Bad Boy' pistons injured key players for an entire season.
