Larrys brain was a time machine that could look 1 second into the future.
Well, the way he would tell opposing players what play the Celtics planned to run after the time out, then go ahead and execute it, leads me to believe he could see a couple minutes into the future.
And that's why a Jedi appears to have amazing reflexes.
Damn I read Luka my bad😂😂😂
Bird would destroy today's players with his toughness, competitive play & mostly his brain. He was a beast & took no prisoners.
he really did have a high IQ~~ Love Larry!!
You're right he looked injured that would be because he was playing with a concussion double vision and a fractured right cheekbone. Larry legend was one of the toughest sons to ever step foot on a court. And though you didn't mention it he was an absolutely legendary trash talker.
Yep. He quite literally broke his face, and came back out in the second half and won the game.
He was also mvp from 1984-86 !!!!! 3
years in a row
I mentioned it in my comment as well, about his chronic back pain. Probably shortened his career by at least a couple years. If only....
@@josephbishop3590 uh i have a bad back, hard to get out of bed some days, but for him to suit up and play a physical game of basket ball, now that is special.
Larry iced in college, had his hand forever changed in college, first got his later career-ending back injury in '85 (before 3 straight MVP's), had both heels operated on to miss most of '89... and really played most of his career with a disc that needed reinserting. That's why Larry could be seen dressed, lying down courtside during games; it wasn't fatigue. He played with all ❤ !
It was always Magic vs Bird, Lakers vs Celtics, never black vs white.
Unfortunately, that's not entirely true, as the documentaries about their rivalry covered. Some black fans from Boston even rooted for the Lakers b/c the Celtics was viewed as the "white team".
The Bird, Jordan, Johnson and Kareem era of basketball would embarrass today’s NBA.
most of them would get bodied.
I know time flies but it amazes me that there are fans that have never checked out bird. he is definitely top 5 of all time.
It wasn’t a black/white thing then. It was straight up Lakers vs. Celtics and it was a war when they played. I’m a white guy and couldn’t stand Bird mainly outta respect he was just that good. I’d like for you to ck out Hakeem ‘ The Dream ‘ Olajuwon when u can he’s the only player Jordan did not like facing. He’s personally my favorite player.
I was a teenager in the 80s and it definitely was a black/white thing. But it was good natured. Just like any rivalry in sports
@@johncecak6950 If you were a Lakers fan, you "hated" Bird, and vice versa if you were a Celtics fan and "hated" Magic, but your hate couldn't get too out of control, because they obviously loved and respected one another a great deal. If you hated too hard on one of them because you were a fan of the other, they would have scolded you about it if they had heard about it.
It was for Bird he felt disrespected if a team put a white player on him
It definitely did start as a black and white thing.
Gotta check your facts. Magic Johnson talks about the racial issues at the time. Magic had black guys in Boston wanting him to beat Bird because to many Boston natives, the Celtics represented white dominion in a black man's game.
Was blessed to watch every Celts game during Bird's run--no one better...
Lucky bastard, but im blessed at least to have seen my Spurs dynasty run
Oh never missed a game that aired when Bird played
Magic was right there with him!
Are you being serious? Because if so you’re as important as running into someone who saw the Beatles! How cool that must have been!
Same. Like watching Tiger Woods play golf, just the dominate player in the game.
There was no black and white as far as Bird felt about it. I think fundamentals is where Bird ruled. He couldn’t jump the highest, but he was always in the right spot, could pass the ball like crazy and was a total team guy.
There was though. He'd get offended when the other team would have a white guy guard him.
He had a 28 inch vert
It wasn't a big part of his arsenal, but I've seen him dunk on other teams big men. He was 6'9", with the same vertical as Karl Malone.
@@Gigawicket that was just shit talking. There was plenty of white talent back then. The game was a lot more rough. Larry Bird was one of the best when it came to trash talk.
I think in his early days Bird was a better athlete than he was given credit for. He could always run a little faster and jump a little higher than you thought he could. But injuries robbed him pretty young of the athleticism he had.
Bird won 3 THREE MVP's and 67% of ALL MVP VOTES cast from 1980 - 1989!
Hadn’t heard the 67% vote stat. Where can I find that?
The game was definitely more physical back then
If you didn't get to the locker room after the game with blood somewhere on your body your teammates would think you didn't give maximum effort.
As a Sonics fan, I always dreaded Celtics games because Bird always found a way to kill us. He lived in Xavier McDaniel’s head rent free. He smoked Dale Ellis in the first 3-point contest. Man, I hated that guy! But wow, what a player. The hustle, the craft, and the straight assassin mentality. He out-Jordaned Jordan with his head games. People say the Celtics were loaded, but Bird made those guys all Stars with his unselfish play and the way he led by example. They had like 31 wins the season he was drafted and went to the Eastern conference finals his rookie season. My all time starting 5 is Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Tim Duncan, and Wilt Chamberlain. For the record, I love LeBron James. He’s top 5 at the 3 to me and cracks my top 10 all time too. James just happens to share a position with some ridiculously dominant players, you know?
For me the Magic/Bird era was the best basketball of my life. I am 70 and have seen many greats.
Love seeing Tim get some love. Great top 5.
That is the best five for five positions you can possibly choose. People don't realize what a complete player and freakish athlete Wilt was. He could have dominated track and field if that had been the direction he went. After he retired from NBA he was still the best volleyball player in the world. He led the NBA in assists one year.
@@skiziskin The footage still around is just unreal. How fast he could accelerate and run the court in general, his crazy vertical, the touch he had on the finger roll with guys hanging off of him, the 100 point game, that sequence where he blocked two of Cap’s sky hooks seconds apart. The fact that Bill Russell could actually hold his own against Wilt Chamberlain should put a lot more respect on Russell’s name, too.
@@skiziskin One other thing about Wilt. Can you name another player that the NBA actually changed the rules for to make it more fair for all the other players? Because of Wilt's dominance the NBA widened the Key.
I totally disagree. It was never Black Vs. White. The rivalry was Lakers Vs. Celtics. Pistons Vs. Celtics ect.
Certain documentaries that cover their rivalry point out the black vs white aspect. I recall that there was even a story told by a Laker about black basketball fans from Boston rooting for LA instead due to the Celtics being led by Bird.
@@noclouds111 I actually remember from one of their documentaries that certain fans of that period were being interviewed in the middle of a game about how a white player is the MVP of a league that's known mainly for being dominated by black players.
@@noclouds111 I think the question by the uploader is towards the POV of the fans rather than the players. Like it or not, it's part of the appeal of their rivalry especially in America.

I grew up on the Celtics back in the day! Love Larry Bird,he is a legend!
I was a big Celtic fan I that era. Bird, McHale and Parrish. They were a true team, the best basketball. Basketball was so much better then compared to now.
I've seen most of the reactions to the Bird tapes and others of that era, and one thing seldom gets mentioned. The rules were different back then...half the crap today's players get away with wasn't even legal back then...palming the ball was just beginning during Birds era, with Magic being the one that really started it, for example. The players bodied up more and used more fakes because they couldn't hold the ball while dribbling...lots of rules have changed or been relaxed under the pretext of being more entertaining. I'll take watching the Celtics and Lakers during this time frame over today anytime.
The real switch to the longer shorts happened because of the Michigan “Fab Five” - five highly -touted freshmen who all wore the longer shorts.
Yep they were the first team to wear the long shorts. I remember it well. I was 22 at the time lol
I thought it was Jordan. He had his college shorts on underneath his Bulls shorts.
Was gonna say that, exactly spot on. They changed the look of basketball.
It really started a few years earlier. I know in 88-89 MJ was wearing longer shorts, because he had NC practice shorts underneath his Bulls uniform. So he needed some extra length to his game shorts. Not sure if he was doing that earlier, but 88-89 season was when I noticed it.
Fab 5 also was the first with black socks and all black bball shoes
Michael Jordan asked his manufacturer to make him longer shorts so he would be more comfortable. Then the league adopted it, except for John Stockton.
Plus MJ had his NC shorts under his Bulls shorts.
Remember the Arkansas championship team? Their shorts were mega long and I think had some influence.
Pistol Pete Maravich’s last name is pronounced (Mare-a-vitch). He was a beast. So was Larry. I was all about the Celtic’s. That feels like ancient history now. 🤘🏼
I got to go to the Jazz games in the Superdome when Maravich played for them. I also got to meet Pistol Pete right before he passed when I was a student trainer for LSU's basketball team for the 1987-1988 season. Great humble guy with an unmatched skill for shooting, passing and dribbling.
IMHO Pistol Pete was the best pure shooter ever.
Yep, so was Bob Petit and George Mikan. There have always been world class players. Hell, not to be disrespectful, but I'm willing to bet most "new" basketball fans don't know the Lakers weren't originally from LA, they from Minneapolis (hence the name.... land of 1000 lakes), probably don't know that for a time dunking was against the rules (thanks to Kareem/Alcinder), and the Utah Jazz was originally the New Orleans Jazz. Basketball may have most definitely evolved, but that doesn't mean it's better. New isn't always better. Don't believe me..... just try to reach a real customer service representative instead of a computer to log a complaint or problem. 🤦♂️
Damn, I'm 47 played ball till 34 for a living, y'all talk about Pete... how old are you??? And I only heard stories of his passing game being way before time. I need to hear facts on y'all, how old and share knowledge. Always was told black players refused to catch his crazy ass passes on purpose back then. Hit me with some knowledge, I'll call your bluff and get out this conversation. Thanks y'all
Maravich, 50 years later, remains the NCAA D1 total scoring leader by more than 10% and freshmen weren’t allowed to play back then. He led the nation on scoring 3 straight years and his point per game was an unfathomable 44.2.
Did you miss where he played a game left handed and still had 27 in the 3rd
I lived in Massachusetts when Larry was huge.
Hmmmm....My Top 5 would have to be:
Center: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Power Forward: Karl Malone
Small Forward: Larry Bird
Shooting Guard: Michael Jordan
Point Guard: Magic Johnson
AGREE.....that is mine as well. Saw all these guys play in their PRIME as well.
Agree on that except for PF…Duncan.
That's a solid starting five.
@@GoEqBro Duncan is a deserved Hall of Fame Power Forward, no doubt. I was just never his biggest fan being a Timberwolves/Rockets/Jazz fan, and I preferred the more physical play of the Mailman and Garnett to what I saw from Duncan.
“If I had to choose a player to take a final shot to win a game I'd choose (Michael) Jordan, but if I could pick one to shoot to save my life I would pick Bird".
Pat Riley.
Nuff said!
You could flip that. Both could make either shot.
I choose MJ to shoot for my life, but I'd make a bet with him he couldnt hit the shot or I'd owe him my life... he's makin that shot and now im mikes indentured servant haha
you missed the part where he played the first half with his left hand and scored.. something like 25 points
You left out the paet where be actually told everyone he was going to do it, before the game started. 😆
27 and took himself out of the game in 3rd quarter. Larry Legend the best ever to lace them up
@@wesleythomas8176 he didn’t take himself out after 3 quarters… the game was close, so he played the 4th quarter right handed and scored another 20 pts - a total of 47 points.
@@imweakfordeaky Hey, Weak! Didn’t know you were into BB, too 👏🏼😂👍🏼

TO ME PERSONALLY EVEN THOUGH LARRY "LEGEND" WAS NO DOUBT A GREAT SHOOTER FROM ANYWHERE ON THE FLOOR INCLUDING 3 POINTERS, AN UNBELIEVABLE FREE THROW SHOOTER, A FANTASTIC PASSER & DEFENSIVE PLAYER DUE TO HAND-EYE COORDINATION & ANTICIPATION HIS AVERAGE OF OVER 10 REBOUNDS PER GAME FOR HIS ENTIRE CAREER IS UNFATHOMABLE ESPECIALLY FOR A MAN WHO WASN'T THAT FAST & COULDN'T JUMP!
Why does it have to be a black and white thing? How about talent vs talent.
Because it was the 80s. A decade where the likes of Prince & Whitney Houston were called out by fans for trying to "sound white". The black & white thing is actually covered by Bird & Magic's documentaries.
@@jp3813 The documentaries perhaps perpetuating a narrative?
@@cindyknudson2715 Such as archive interviews of 80s fans talking about race? Or the players themselves telling stories about it? Is it really that hard to imagine skin color being a big deal in America?
liberals are super obsessed with race for some reason , its what they teach in schools nowadays
The beauty of the Magic and Bird years was their friendship. Absolutely fierce competitors that would bang all night on the court but showed respect for each other when the game was over.
It was more about the appreciation for the skill on the court when those teams played than rooting for one side or the other. That Lakers Celtics rivalry seemed to help people look beyond race and find a more genuine respect for others.
I attended dozens of Celtics games while Larry played - the Big Three, DJ, Danny, etc. It was like going to the finest jazz concerts - the brilliance of the improvisation was just amazing to watch. I can't remember ever missing a game, whether there or on TV. An absolute master.
1. I was a Bird AND Magic fan. Before Michael, they were the s**t. 2. Jordan initiated the longer shorts in the late 80s. Not sure why, but it was definitely him (maybe to cover his North Carolina shorts that he reportedly wore every game under his Bulls shorts). 3. McHale was legit. 4. While Bird might not now make my starting 5 at small forward, he’s definitely in contention. 5. Outside of MJ, perhaps the highest basketball IQ ever.
It depends on the role you want SF to play. Definitely a better option to play Lebron at SF for example if you are thinking player for player, scoring output and facilitating, but if you already have an OG point guard and SG in your top 5 then maybe Lebron muddies the waters a little bit.
And so ultimately the top 5 debate comes down to Jordan vs Lebron imo. If Jordan is the SG of your team better going with Bird at SG than Lebron. If Kobe is your SG then go with Lebron at SF.
@@themistoklestheodosopoulos6253 I like that analysis a lot. Jordan's in my 5, and I always took Bird for similar reasons.
Something had happened to MJ’s shorts and he had to borrow a pair that were baggy on him. Well it caught on. Like Mike, if I could be like Mike.
With today's training & sports medicine & ticky-tacky rules, not having Bird in your starting 5 would be a fatal error. He would dominate. Pure clutch. Crushing professional players by telling them what he's gonna do & where, then doing it. Who's guardin' me coach?
Yall need to stop lying. It was the Michigan FAB 5 that started the shorts
The shot @ 3:30 where he's behind the backboard gets me every time.
he missed it talking..
Larry is a legend. He knew the game better than anyone. He was playing chess when everyone else was playing checkers.
Bird had such great Full Court Awareness. He knew where everyone was it seems at all times. That's why his passes were so amazing! Great video.
It was never a black and white thing. No one cared what color you were. It was a 4-way rivalry... Boston, Detroit, Knicks, Lakers. Everyone was a fan of one of those teams!
Yea, Boston here.
Knicks? In your dreams? The haven't been to the Finals since 1973! Sixers got much further in the playoffs than the Knicks during the Bird/Johnson Era.
I would swap out the Knicks for Philly. As a Laker fan back then, Andrew Toney terrified me. I was at Game 4 when Philly swept us in '83. Gotta admit, I was happy Doc got his ring, and I cracked up when I saw Moses Malone smiling on the court. Other than that, I was pissed.
The final scene sums it up, I believe. They respected each other and without one pushing the other, they wouldn't have been as great as they were.
To be honest, I'm not a big basketball fan;however, I remember when they were still playing college ball and going up against one another.
I may not have been a huge fan of the game, but I watched when they played against each other. In my opinion, that is why they transcended the sport. People who normally wouldn't be interested became interested.
In college they played against each other once, that's it, once.
@@PRMillette and, your point? I never said how often they played against each other. I remember, very well, how that game was built up and a lot of people who didn't necessarily watch basketball, like myself, tuned in to watch the game.
I have no idea what you're going on about.
@@davidgoldstein1526 you're the one that that said that you remember them going up against one another in college basketball, they both only played their very last game against one another in the NCAA Finals, you're statement speaks for itself. 😎
@@PRMillette and, I remember the game well. I didn't say they had a long standing rivalry in college. 😉
@@davidgoldstein1526 but yes you did. 😎
Yep... he Won the first 3 3-point contests !! He was AMAZING !!
He’s also a very nice and down to earth man. He was always around when I was little.
Bird won 3 mvp's in a row until he hurt his back shoveling gravel for his mom's driveway or he probably would have won at least 4 in a row especially since Jordan was 0-6 against bird in playoff series
Magic v. Larry was a pretty tight completion. Magic for sure had more overall team support. No disrespect to the other Celtics who were no slouch.
Magic vs. Bird. That was when men played basketball. When giants strode the earth and lived among us.
No doubt, Bird never had a Kareem or James Worthy. McHale and Parish were decent, but I'd trade them both for Kareem.
Everybody was “catching bodies” then. That’s how the game was played before a feather touch got a whistle. Larry Legend had moves for everybody in the league. Even the GOAT, MJ, can’t say he beat Bird.
No one before, and no one since, had the will to win like Bird. His greatest moments are his unmatched clutch finishes where the ice in his veins broke the heart of all his haters.
Larry Bird is considered by experts as the Best NBA player in history. Nowadays fans say is Jordan or James but they are not exoert and they have never seen how great was Bird.
Lol no one has ever considered bird the greatest of all time....all time great yes. GOAT no unless ur a mick in boston
I find it so funny that she would put Larry Bird down and know nothing about him because obviously he is put on the top 3 list because he broke many records and and he won many games and never wined or complained when he got hurt unlike some of the players today. Let's see how many people can fracture there right cheek also he had double vision and still won the game. Really disrespectful people. You don't need to put someone down to bring someone up.
You really should go look at his stats and look how long he was in the league and look at what he did when he was in the league and look at some of the things he did back then that are use today as a small Forward. Go ask LeBron he'll tell you
Since you've done a lot of music reaction videos, I think the best way I can describe the Lakers/Celtics thing is to say it was like the mid 60s Beatles/Beach Boys competition. Whenever one side did something, it was like the other had to top it.
I was a Lakers fan, but one thing that always amazed me about Larry Legend-he always knew where his teammates were. So he could come down court with the ball, never look back, and fire a backwards pass to McHale or Parrish or whomever, because even though he'd never seen them he knew where they were going to be.
Before I even watch this I have to say that I have been a sub since the pretty much the beginning. I don't comment on channels often but it's so crazy ya did this reaction because the last 3 days all I have been watching are reactions to this lol. I am from Indiana, 42 years old, grew up with Larry but never realized just how good he was. Excited to see your reaction!
How funny! That's what I've been stuck on too. I'm not a fan of basketball. Im more NFL. But growing up with my boy cousins, that's all they watched. Along with NFL. They're hardcore Lakers fans. So when it was time for the Celtics and Lakers game. My relatives were at their loudest.
Pat Riley legendary Lakers coach said if he had to choose on player to take the last shot to win a game- Jordan. One player to save his life- Larry Bird.
Enough said
They're all athletes, and so I believe they are all athletic, just to what degree. Bird wasn't the most athletic, not the fastest, didn't jump the highest, but his skill-level was un-surpasable, and he's 6'10, doesn't need to jump too much, and his hustle and know-how of the game was un-matched. One of the greats.
Right. He was athletic enough. Look at him dunking over seven footers in this video.
I can’t really enjoy this without being able to hear the video so can’t really finish it. I was really hoping you’d do Bird and was looking forward to this one too. 🙁
*I'm not watching a mix tape of the G WITH NO SOUND*
I was a Lakers fan and so Magic was the person I supported and admired. Bird was hard to take for Lakers fans. He was our nemesis. Frankly, Bird was amazing--one of the best of all time.
I USED to be a Lakers fan, back when Magic, Kareem, Coop, Worthy, and the rest of the team , back then , hated the Celtics, Bird especially, he was soooooo talented, sooo good. Now, I have respect and admiration for him. One of the greats, without a doubt.
Lifelong Celtics fan. Never black vs. white. My top 5 all time: 1. Jordan 2. Kobe 3. Bird/Magic 4. Bird/Magic 5. Depends on my mood. Could be Kareem, Duncan, Iverson, Stockton, Wilt, sometimes George Mikan. I do take into account the era in which they played.
I was a Bird and Magic fan. I didn't think of it as Black vs White.
Larry Bird was talented beyond belief. Once before a game he told the other team he was going to play left handed to give them a chance. Bird made 47 points that game.
Bird is always talked of for his insane 3-pt shooting, but it was his mastery of the blind pass that truly made him great. He had an awareness of what was happening and what would happen that was spooky at times. And Celtics vs Lakers back in the 80s was IT for basketball.
Bird was one of those deceptive types - you think he must be slow, but the guy was 6'9" and somehow always had enough space to get his shot. A lot of dudes underestimated him until they got on the court with him.
Did you know that Larry Bird swept Michael Jordan in the playoffs and had a losing record against Larry Bird? Michael Jordan said he learned to trash talk from Larry Bird as well and said he learned the most playing against him.
And the badboy pistons kicked him out the playoffs
@@ladreus and they said Michael Jordan had no competition in that era and that the talent was weak.
No, it was Lakers/Celtics. Saw these games live. Such a great team rivalry. So many great players on both teams. Of course Magic and Larry were the best players on their teams, but whatever team played best on the night won. These were the days of actual team basketball
Larry was funny - he went over to an opposing coach and said - you are disrespecting me. The coach was upset because it was Larry Bird in his face - Larry said you have a white guy covering me, that’s disrespectful. When he fell on the floor, he fracture his jaw and still came back to finish and win the game. Watching Showtime come to down - it was insane - it was war. They made it black and white for ratings - but Bird and Magic feared each other and after Magic did that sneaker commercial and then had lunch at Bird’s mom’s house where his mom said Magic was her favorite player - the friendship started to grow. Remember - they watched each other’s stats - they did not give a crap on how many points - they both cared only on one thing - winning. Magic was amazing and during his inauguration into the Hall of Fame gave the credit to Larry - he said Larry was the reason he was what he was - because the mimic each other. Basketball had a extremely talented league with so many different players. Magic was the one who went after Larry to join the Dream Team in ‘91 olympics games. Larry’s two players he respected the most was Magic and Jordon. Larry commented on Cooper as the best defensive player during his retirement from the Celtics. Larry was not fast and he couldn’t jump but he was mentally focused more than anyone else. Even Jordon learned from Larry in getting under people’s skin. He is one the the greats and he is the only one who beat every one in his area - Bad Boy Pistons, Showtime ( Kareem, Coop, Worthy, Magic), Jordon - swept him and the Bulls, Dominic Wilkins, the X Man, Patrick Ewing from NY, and it goes on and on - and my favorite Charles Barclay from the Suns. Oh Yeah - Dr. J from the 76’s. So much talent during those years and we got to see many good teams battle it out - but - in the end - it was two teams - The Lakers and the Celtics. Still, remember Bill Russell of the Celtics has 11 rings - not even Brady in the NFL can match that.
The difference, in the day, the game was a battle. A Battle! No black and no white, get rid of that! Talent prevailed. I could list 50 players who could compete today. The 3 point specialist changed the game. Not for the better IMO!
Rodman & Isiah: "If Bird was black, he'd be just another good player."
@@jp3813 they were so wrong for that considering Bird won his third chip and third mvp the year Rodman was drafted.

An amazing shooter but really the best rebounding and passing forward in NBA history...
Passing for sure.
All time starting 5. Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Tim Duncan and Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
Nice line up
Michael Jordan started the longer shorts. He wore his college shorts under his NBA shorts, so he needed them longer to cover his UNC shorts. Pretty soon everybody was wearing long shorts.
I grew up watching the Bulls in the 90s and I love their hustle and style. It seemed like a faster, harder, more dynamic game back in the day. I have a soft spot for all those players on the Bulls roster and could pick any of them for my top best of. The players I enjoy watching no matter who they play for are, well of course, Michael Jordan being my top all time favorite. Jordan just always demanded the best from his teammates but always pushed himself harder. Dennis Rodman just flys going for the ball, hits his shots when he goes for it but really dominates defensively. Larry Bird is all around great and it's a surprise because he looks like a big slow player but he is incredibly physical and surgically perfect with his passing, shooting game. I just love to watch Shaquille O'Neal play. He was good at what he did but it was what he was bad at, free throws, that made him fun to watch. Kobe Bryant was another player who was, like Michael Jordan, an all around solid player who could get the best out of his team. He could be joking around and smiling then step up and get this look of challenge in his eyes. I loved the explosiveness of his game.
I was at the Super Dome when i was 12 or so and Pistol Pete scored 68 i think it was on Coach Phil Jacksons team when he played on Knicks . No 3 point line at that time either The man was one of the best
Larry Bird was actually quite nimble early in his career for a 6'9 man, he had to play the second half of his career wearing a weighted corset after he sustained a back injury while shoveling gravel
IF Larry Bird played today with TODAY's NBA Rules. He'd average 40pts a game on top of averaging a Triple Double. He averaged 10 rebounds a game during the most physical era of the NBA.
As others have said, the fan rivalry was regional more than racial. In my mind, Bird and Magic were very similar players. They were about the same size. They were the two smartest players and greatest leaders in the league. Neither was super athletic but I think they were more than athletic enough. What they lacked in lateral quickness defensively was more than made up for by their intelligence and quick hands. Offensively nobody other than the two of them could play every position on the court. Nobody until Lebron that is. Neither had huge hops but they were 6'9". They could get up high enough to dunk over bigger players and they had some of the best post up moves in history. They were both masterful and creative passers. Nobody ran the fast break better than the two of them. They were always improving. Coming into the league, the rap on Magic was he didn't have a jump shot. He quickly put that to rest. And Bird became a better rebounder and a more vocal leader... as well as the most ruthless trash talker ever. But there were so few weaknesses in either of their games that they and their respective teams were able to dominate the league for nearly a decade. I was always a fan of both from their NCAA finals matchup, which Magic's Michigan State team dominated through superior talent around Magic. Their NBA careers were destined to redefine the sport. I'm always happy when younger fans watch these videos and realize how great Larry Bird was. If Magic said he was the best that really means something. He wouldn't just say that. He played *with* Kareem.
Well said. My sentiments exactly.
Magic was pretty athletic but Bird was a better shooter. They were fairly equal
LOOL everyone says he is like Luka when they first really watch him, he's not, he was far more complete, much more to his game than Luka, similar shooting though
Thank you for saying this, Luka being compared to Bird is like LeBron being compared to Jordan or even Magic....RIDICULOUS. Luka doesn't have the IQ, passing ability, defense or 3 point shooting like Bird. Luka is a good player but nothing like Bird.
He also had a heart problem he had to deal with that he wrote about in his book playing and coaching the game i love he is an amazing man
Note what you didn't see "back in the day"
... posing after dunks vs getting back on D, arguing on every call, rough play without tech's. players with great footwork/back to the basket moves.
Bird was one of the savviest players to ever play. You here all the time, “he wasn’t athletic”. He was athletic enough to carry trophies off the court. I think it’s disingenuous for you to present your position in these videos as if you don’t have an opinion. Clearly you favor what you’ve seen in the past ten years. The competition in the NBA post ABA merger was so much tougher than it is today. Bird and Magic alone saved the NBA in the early 80s.
Bird wasn't "athletic" in the same way Tom Brady isn't "athletic". One way or another, they got the job done and won titles. The Bird vs Magic games back in the 80's were legendary! Those hot summer games in the old Boston Garden with no air conditioning and both teams putting on a basketball clinic for the ages was amazing!
Luka and Joker both ain't athletic either and they in the top 5 right now
Magic, Bird, Jordan, Russell, Bryant
Put a 25yr old Larry in a time machine and bring him to the NBA of today and he would be MVP from his 1st year until he retired.
Larry Bird was an all-around basketball player and turned out to be the legend. He pass the ball, he rebounded, he scored, he played defense. All the elements of the game he did very well in one of the top team players and leaders in the sport. Yes there are other great players but Larry legend got the name for a reason.
Larry just love the game of basketball and he put his heart and soul into every game when lose you could depend on him every single game, and the people he played against knew that so they could never let their guard down. Some of the greatest have said about him he was to three steps ahead of you when you were playing him defensively
You were sort of riffing and totally missed the shot from behind the backboard ;-p
Celtics won 3 and Lakers won 4 I think. Race didn't really play into it, you liked who you liked. Kobe,Mike, Larry, wilt,Tim Duncan
Are u sensitive white person? Obviously
@@chrissmith6774 at the time yeah maybe, but the players didnt give a rats crap about what the idiots outside said. Magic and Bird became lifetime rivals and the greatest of friends off the court... on the court it was war and it was awesome. Thats what made it beautiful and a true example of how sports can bring folks together. Respect in the craft and all
Everyone knows that the Twitter logo is a blue bird. Most don't know that the bird is named "Larry T Bird" in honor of the great Celtic Larry Bird.
It was a Lakers/Celtics thing. Those two teams were stacked with stars. Even the benches were impressive. Larry and Magic-they stood at the tops of their respective pyramids, but they weren't alone by a long shot.
The idea that you would dismiss an entire generation of basketball players simply because they played in the 50's tells us all that you don't have a clue about this game. Now THAT's disrespectful.
Wilt Chamberlain Banged over 10,000 chicks... that stat alone makes him a goat in my eyes :-) well that and the hundred point game...
My top 5? In alphabetical order: Bird, Erving, Johnson, Jordan. I don't know who I want as my fifth though, because there are several in the next tier of players that I like. But the one thing that is certain is that they'd all be from last century before the game became so weak. You talked about the moves looking rougher in the Bird video compared to the fluidity of the modern NBA. The reason for that is because the entire game was a much rougher, hands on, and sometimes no holds barred battle than modern NBA dancing. LeBron excuses his poor performance by blaming a high ankle sprain (and those are awful. It took a while for me to recover, but I still went to work and did my job through it for a crap ton less money). Bird bounced his head off of the floor, broke the orbital bone around his eyesocket, and then came back from receiving medical treatment in the locker room to help lead his team to victory with double vision.
Speaking of disrespect, Bird was king of the trash talkers and he went off one time about how disrespected he felt when an opposing coach was trying to have a white guy guard him. :-D Bird was a master craftsman and technician. He didn't do anything but spend much of his time trying hone his craft, which is something a lot of the modern era "superstars" should try to do sometime.
Don't take me completely wrong though. There are modern era players I like. Curry, Harden, and the late Bryant are ones I can think of that I admire for their games, but I just can't stand to watch the NBA since the early 2000s.
The switch from nut huggers to baggy shorts was prompted by the Fab 5 in 1991.
He was physical but not athletic. One of my inspirations was spud webb. I wasn't short 6 ft even but watching him made you want to work harder.
Exactly but watching this beginning to question if he wasn’t athletic man heHe did have some pretty good movies man behind the back passes and shit like I didn’t remember
Luca is called Baby Bird for a reason. But Bird was a better shooter, passer and tougher. But Luca is still coming.
“That’s disrespectful.” 😂😂😂
If I remember correctly, he is the only person to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player, a coach, and an executive...
Far as smoothness, today's players have it easy from the 3-point line and in as opposed to '80s and '90s when they were bumping bodies from the perimeter to the basket. And maybe the video cameras of old or not as smooth as today 4K cameras and HD cameras.
Wilt Chamberlain, best ever.
YES!
100 points in a game (still the record)
50 points a game for a season (still the record)
@@markdubois4882 And the only quintuple-double in NBA history. ... 53 Points, 32 Rebounds, 14 Assists, 24 Blocks, And 11 Steals on March 18, 1968 against the Lakers
Larry was easily a top 3 all time NBA player. That comes from his fellow players in the NBA, who he would embarrass on a nightly basis. He may be the best ever.
In terms of Bird's "catching bodies", the game was much more violent back then.
To me it wasn't a black or white thing at all, it was a local thing. He was from this area (Southern Indiana) even if he was playing way over in Boston. In most instances we're more likely to follow college teams here, IU, U of L, UK, we're all about March Madness. Your west coast so it only makes sense you'd support Magic, man.
Southridge Raiders!
Springs Valley is just up the road.
He would trip out on our high school gymnasiums.
@@robertkramer41 Eastern Musketeers! LOL!
I don't know a ton about basketball but I'm learning. Luka is definitely up and coming and will be a big name someday. Wish Slovenia could've won a medal but they did incredible as it was.
Also Shaq is the funniest basketball guy. He never fails to make me laugh 🤣
Larry Bird was actually one of the players that Michael Jordan worried about playing
People dont realize he was a 3 time in a row league MVP
Bird wasn't the most athletic but he had tremendous heart, tremendous IQ, and a complete game. If I had to pick my top 4 players of all time I'd want to have the ball in the last 2 seconds of the game 3. Magic Johnson. 2. Michael Jordan. 1. Larry Bird.
People here have different recollections about Bird & Magic's rivalry, so you'll get many of them claiming that it was never seen as a racial thing. But documentaries about both players' careers have covered the black vs white aspect many times. Highlights include: Lakers players saying that some black fans from Boston rooted for them b/c the Celtics was seen as a white team, some white fans from Boston boasting that a white player is the MVP of a league full of black players, Cedric Maxwell admitting that he initially assumed Bird to be an overhyped white player, Arsenio Hall claiming that the white media credited Bird for all of the Celtics' success even when the latter didn't play, etc...
Sure there were some who saw it as race. But most of fandom broke down regionally.
@@skiziskin Fandom, sure. But the world is bigger than that.
They say if the the game depends on the last shot , you want Michael Jordan to shoot it …….. but if your life depends on it , you want Larry Bird to shoot it.
Bird = GREATEST trash talker ever 😂😂
If i remember right bird went to an opposing teams head coach and said he felt disrepected that they put a white guy to guard him 😂😂😂
You missed SO many great executions when you let your mind wander and started talking. PAUSE when you feel the need to speak. You really only witnessed about half of what Bird was doing. Sad.
(1) Magic
(2) MJ the goat
(3) Larry Legend
(4) Karl Malone
(5) Bill Russell
Lebron started bad. He dove and was rewarded for it. Those listed played hurt. Kobe, Lebron , Kareem , and Wilt are close
did he ask for just a all around top 5 or did he want position players?
You can't possibly back up Magic #1. Not even in the top 5. Great player but get real!
A lot of rule changes happened between 92 and 98. Some of them were considered 'Jordan' rules to protect certain players. Others were to protect fairness after the 'Bad Boy' pistons injured key players for an entire season.
His IQ was higher than Einstein’s. He was brilliant and funny!
This is the worst Larry bird reaction I’ve ever seen, you’re not even paying attention half the time.
I love his reactions but had to turn this one off a minute in. I don't mind all the talking at all. But if you're going to miss more plays than you see, and don't listen to the dialogue, just pause it lol
@@YerpDerp17 totally agree, if your gonna talk just pause it man, he missed so much because of it
