Pat Riley once said “if I had to pick one player to take a shot to save a game, I'd pick Michael Jordan. If I had to pick one player to take a shot to save my life… I'd pick Larry Bird.” Based on his competitive nature, there's no doubt that missing a big shot would have pained Larry Bird. Pat Riley said it best.
I was able to watch Bird play live and in my book He’s the undisputed GOAT. I hope you go down the Bird rabbit hole because I get no greater pleasure than seeing someone in your generation discovering Bird.
If this is your first dive into Larry Bird, you've got so much more to view. Check out his Trash Talking highlights and his Passing Highlights - I think you'll be amazed! Enjoy!
Yes it was "Necessary" that Bird did that Long 3-Point shot. He wouldn't have made it the post in time; Look again the "Red Light" was going on when the Ball was going into the Basket. Bird Was Then & Still The Best Clutch Shooter & When You Get To Know Bird More You'll See That Too. Great Reaction
You asked why Atlanta went crazy when bird hit that shot, it's because bird had just dropped 60 on their heads retaking the record for most points in a single game by a Celtics player
The other team would get excited because hed make an amazing shot or move. Its called RESPECT. I dont understand younger generations have such a hard time understanding if even the opposing team respects talent. Even in baseball and football you will get another team member showing respect for an amazing move or amazing play from an opposing team member. That should be how it is when you are respecting talent. You aren't being disrespectful to your team, you're just being a human being and somebody who loves the sport youre in and appreciates excellence in that sport. Why is that so hard to grasp? It's not being disloyal to appreciate greatness even if it's not somebody on your own team. Simple.
His Well ran deep ,he had "IT" ,did it all ,and cared about his teammates and winning, never cared about the stats IQ off the charts ,they Didn't know how to staph him bball at his best ,glad i witnessed it in real life #LB33 💚🐦🏀☘🔥
Over 4 straight seasons from 84-88...founding member of the 50/40/90 club while averaging 28 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists per game. Won 2 of his 3 League MVPs, a Championship and a Finals MVP. At 60 years old while with Pacers management he walked on the court during practice one day in a button up shirt, slacks and dress shoes while the players were stretching. Grabbed a ball and proceeded to start jacking 3s...10 in a row. Then just walked off and sat down like nothing happened lol
For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was and never had the chance to see him play this comment is for you. Remember in this comment I am just highlighting Larry's NBA accomplishments. Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year of his NBA career. Just think about it, what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season
@@ShreknazistaCompare the viewer ratings. There are phenomenal players currently, but the game was much more exciting without the excess calls and dependence on 3s. That old heads thing is so disrespectful.
@@ShreknazistaI mean, he’s not lying though! Back then it was BRUTAL! Now players whine over the smallest hit, call bullshit on rational calls and just soft today! I mean Lebron sat out how many games because of a rolled ankle? Bird played with a destroyed back and broken face and still dominated the court! And I’m from this era of basketball and prefer oldschool basketball 🤷🏼♂️
I don't want "brutal" as when the likes of Chuck Person and Bill Laimbeer "(lame beer🤣) would purposely try to hurt Larry Bird's broken back. I saw them both do it more than once and that nonsense needed to be reined in. But calls have gone to extremes in the other direction now and it's made for seriously boring play. Let players battle it out, collapse under the basket, and touch other players without getting called for silly fouls. Get rid of that stupid circle under the basket. It's almost as bad as the pitching clock! I tire of shoot a three, run down court, rinse, repeat... Imagine if they let the best players today really go at it again.
When he busted his face, the following shots, they weren't Highlights except from the same game where he came back and played with that injury and won the game for the Celtics.
Larry Bird is the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 club, the only person in NBA history to be named Rookie of the Year, 3 point Champion three straight years, MVP three times straight (When competing against Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Dr. J, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and many more), Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year.
ive been watching ball since the 80s and the best players IVE EVER SEEN were Michael JOrdan and Larry Bird. then Magic, Kareem and a bunch of other players follow (Lebron, Kobe, Curry, Shaq, Duncan, Olajuwan, players IVE SEEN play live) But Jordan and Bird are my top two. Bird is the oNLY player in HISTORY to average atleast 24 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists for his CAREER.. he also shot 50/40/90 IN TWO SEASONS (only 2 other players EVER have done that) and he led the league in DWS (defensive win shares) FOUR times (and came in 2nd 3 times) and only FOUR other players IN HISTORY have matched/surpassed that. bird is the most all around player EVER. and if Jordan wasnt a TWO WAY athlete and 6-0 IN THE FINALS, BIRD WOULD BY MY GOAT.
I’m from Michigan and definitely a Detroit Pistons fan but back in the day I used to root for Larry Byrd against every team I should say the Boston Celtics against every team except the Pistons when the Pistons finally over took the Celtics it was awesome however Larry Bird was one of the best basketball player ever to play basketball

I love watching Larry Bird first timers.
Wait until you see Larry Bird pass like an NFL quarterback.
3:31 that was a buzzer beater. He didn’t have time to dribble for a layup.
when he received the pass from half court and shoot the tree point, wasn't disrespectful, was a buzzer beater
If he touched the court the shot wouldn't have counted.
