The problem you have with the headsail jaming from time to time is that the knot of the halyard, which attaches the halyard to the cylinder of the headsail at the top of the mast gets caught sometimes and thus not being smooth to unroll . I had this problem and it was solved by changing the angle of the halyard at the top of the mast.. this is done with a kind of jib lead ,which is a short tube that acts like a guide being fastened to the mast at the top. I don't know if I have been able to explain myself but I would like to send you a photo and you can see exactly what to do. It just took 20 minutes .If you ever come to Alicante spain, it would be a pleasure meeting you. I have a Oceanis 38.1 in the , Real Club de Regatas of Alicante. Next year the Volo race will be starting there! keep it up you wonderful couple!
The music played on this video was so complimentary to your visit to Porto. If you closed your eyes and just listen you are in Portugal. A very touching moment you found there.
What a fabulous episode! Loved the way you integrated the street music in your soundtrack. I feel proud to see my country through your eyes. I wish I could have met you there. Wonderful. Touching.
For anyone interested in what the guy as playing on the classical acoustic guitar, it is part of the guitar works of Heitor Villa-Lobos, a Brazilian classical composer. Worth listening to more.
You guys amaze me with your skills, using the local music in your video and it sounding flawless. You’re a step above the rest , thank you for the hard work and the time to please us viewer’s. ❤
Look, I am always aware of the fact that the production quality of your video's is among the best of the channels I regularly visit on YT. I know that, because every episode is entertaining, informative, fun and enjoyable to watch. In a way, almost like coming home. Half of that is because of the content (what you do, how you do it and your personalities while experiencing that), but the other half is due to the way it is presented. Somehow this episode made me appreciate that production quality even more than other times... the shots, the editing, the music, the choices you made about what and how to show it in which order... Suddenly I was more aware than other times what an amazingly professional level you have reached throughout the years. And so I felt I had to point this out to you, to compliment you both (but I feel maybe Kika a bit more, no offense Dan). Keep this up, you are among my favorite things to watch on any medium. Much love from the Netherlands!
FINALLY, you guys get to properly geek-out! It only took eight years to get to Continental Europe, but now you can spend eight years exploring all of it. As beautiful as the Arctic was (and it was stunning) seeing these views makes my heart melt! You'll have to visit the country of Georgia, this is where wine was first produced, and they still use the ancient production process using Qvevri, which are huge earthenware vessels. If, by chance, you guys don't really like Vino Porto, you can use this wine in making sauces like for a good ragù. ¡Es la bomba! This was an absolutely gorgeous video, loved the overdubbing with the music of the street performers!
I love the fact you're never stuck in hard squall or storms and that you've taken the longest shortest route to cross the ocean. It's beautiful how comfortable it must be on your boat.
Dan and Kiki, you did this episode up really good. Wonderful country in Europe and enjoyed the scenery, really. Like your background sound effects and music, really adds to the adventure. I've always liked history and sailing too. Well thanks you sweet couple and look forward to seeing you again, bon voyage.
This is in my top 5 favorite episodes of yours. This was AMAZING!!!! Portugal is so beautiful!!!!!! The fountains, the architecture, the sultry singer and his unique guitar, and the smoothest wipe out by a very attractive skateboarder I have ever seen!!! Great job Dan and Kika!!!!!!
Your tour of Porto was wonderful. If you stop in Lisbon be sure you go to a Fado bar. Mariza and Carminho are the best Fado singers in Portugal; but Amalia is a part of Portuguese culture! Look forward to more adventures!
Thank you, Dan and Kika, for this wonderful photo of my country. I've been following you for years and couldn't ask for a better episode. Enjoy the visit. It's a great pleasure to have you here.
So much of Europe is so stunning. And your phenomenal storytelling and editing does a wonderful job of conveying the experience. Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us. ❤️❤️❤️
Yippee🎉❤🎉 I’m totally addicted to you guys! Late last night, my mind needed environmentally sensitive global stimulation with a side order of academia doused in beauty and laughter! You’re my weekend refresher! 🥂 Thank you! 👩🏽🏫
The rabelo boat is a traditional Portuguese wooden cargo boat that was used for centuries to transport people and goods along the Douro River. It is flat-bottomed, with a shallow draught, which was necessary to navigate the often shallow fast-flowing waters of the upper Douro. The name rabelo means 'little tail', on account of the long timber projection from the rear of the boat which is used to steer the vessel. Although not in commercial use anymore, these vessels may still be seen, belonging to port wine companies, along the river in Porto and Gaia.
thank you, UMA crew, your view of Porto was brilliant. I am waiting for other cities on the coast of Portugal (Aveiro; Nazare; Lisbon, Setubal etc. You are sailing on the most beautiful coast of Europe.
That classical guitarist was really GOOD. I hope you came to a suitable arrangement, to use his music. Love Portugal; it's a really genuine, real country.
The old fashioned barrels on the barges are very traditional. With a sailing ship from the 14’th, 15’th, 16’th’ 17’th century was it was rated for tonnage it wasn’t the tons the ship weighed, or displaced, or even the weight the ship could carry. The tons listed were how many tuns of wine the ship could carry. A tun is 252 gallons of wine and would weight a long ton, which is heavier then the more commonly used short ton.
What a great video!!! I loved all the sights and the. music transitions were wonderful. You have captured the feeling of the city beautifully....thank you
Thanks for a wonderful video. The view from the tower reminds me of "La Sacrada Famiglia" in Barcelona, the steps in the tower reminded me of Notre Dame in Paris and the wine museum reminded me of the wine cave near Narbonne in southern France. Thanks for the memories and enlightening me to your travels. I like to follow you using Google Earth which adds a new dimension for me. I came for the sailing but have stayed for the tours.
Perfect, you guys are cruising the Meds. I'm planning of living on a boat in the Meds in a couple of years, your videos are so good and going to give me a lot of tips about the Meds. Cheers from Sweden ;-)
This is another of my favorite videos your filming and editing were so good and beautiful that I found myself emotional and had to wipe away the tears from my cheeks. Bravo!....
With my friends sailing in France on the sailboat Cygnus. They had the same problem with their jib, due to wear on the swivel bearing at the top. What I learned from them, you can correct it by putting tension on the halyard to correct the angle using a commonly sold part (marina store) or add a line to keep some downward pressure on the swivel, so the bearing doesn’t bind. Love your channel, quality vids and adventures. 😌
I suffered something similar with my furler, started to jam the halyard above the swivel. The solution for me was putting a kind of detour (semicircle rounded stainless stell in front of the mast) between the exit of the halyard at the top of the mast, and the tip of the halyard that goes to the shivel. This makes the halyard to be in a broader angle in relation to forestay and avoids the jam. Great videos as always!! Fianle get to your ariginal destination... haha
The song in the video is called Paciência by the Brazilian singer Lenine, in fact the guy in the square is singing Brazilian Portuguese. That is nice. Porto is very beautiful.
Happy to host you in Tunisia! We’re living here for a few years in Sidi Bou Said but also just brought our sailboat across from the south of France. Now docked in Gammarth. If you need advice or could use a place on land please just shout out.
Enjoying your cruise, as our boat is having work done. We have had sticking furling gear, in the end change of ball bearing dimensions was our problem. Just like your symptoms sticking every now and then came, what I call the lock. It would not move. You look as if you have everything sorted. Good cruising. S and P
Another amazing video to watch while having my Saturday morning coffee and being temporarily transported to Portugal! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us!
Agree. Cheers, the fog horn and some weird guy whistling are UMA trademarks. Take 'em away and...... OH yeah, don't forget the bathtub sized wine glass. :-) Kika's slowing down..... CHEERs ya'll !!!!
congratulations guys , im amazed by your progress .i literally cant believe what you have achieved on that old boat with the wobbly keel. just watching the first trip into the bahamas was exciting enough. Congratulations and Enjoy the MED.
Loved this episode mucho. Places I travel to I enjoy going to vineyards or distillery’s. This way I have managed to leave with some really nice products & memories.
As a Portuguese follower, I am proud that you have visited our country. I hope you like it and have fun. Take the opportunity to fill up the boat with red wine, our country prodos of the best wines in the world. Hope you had fun with us! Boas proas!
As a former reenactor for the War of 1812 portraying a British officer I was going to say you HAD TO do a port tasting. Port was a regular item we enjoyed at events.
Love it to see Porto again just a correction all the wine places are in Vila Nova de Gaia on the south side of the Douro river the city where my baby sister was born
Furler issue: my rigger just diagnosed this same issue for me and his fix is to add a short dynema pennant between the jib halyard and the swivel to correct the angle. The halyard cannot run parallel to the headsstay when it connects to the swivel. This promotes fouling. The pennant should increase the angle from parallel (call parallel 0 degrees) to more like 20-30 degrees. As my rigger explained this wider angle "holds" the swivel in place and does not encourage/allow wraps or binding. I hope you had the chance to explore the Duro Valley wine region. You will never go to Napa Valley again. It is so beautiful and so innocent for a major wine region (whites and reds not just Port)

I knew it sounded familiar!
Another fantastic tour. But a special kudos to Kika on the editing. The cuts back and forth with the music was flawless.
This was a fun episode that simply made me smile. Another great Sailing Uma production. Thanks for sharing. Cheers 🍷
The guitar player coupled with the gorgeous visuals of such an old world city hit me with such a visceral reaction… keep the beauty coming guys!

I was thinking your tour of the wine museum needed some cheese to go with it - thankfully Kika brought that right at the end :)
Porto cannot be explained, it is felt; and you felt it! Congratulations.
The guitarist playing Villa-Lobos first prelude : a must ! ❤❤❤
Actualy he's playing a song writing by Lenini, a brazilian writer. An the singer is Brazilian too
@@leandroguerra4158 I'm talking about the player at 8' 36" 🙂
One of the few sailing channels that actually sail the world.
Thank You for visiting my country and portraying it so well. You will surely be loved around here.
Just discovered you. My teens and I are about to watch every episode. We are absolute beginners, so much to learn.
Wow - I have seen so many places, and things thanks to your films. Thanks again. Big shout to the musicians in this Step too.

Exploration, adventure, burnout, recharge, juvenate, .... then back to origin, more creative ideas coming up. Go Go Go UMA.
