Props to Gunslingerpro2009. Their series was so convincing that I actually found their channel when I was looking for a tutorial on how to make a turret and Gmod, and used the same video they got attacked by the rebel to make one in my server and a similar tank design. At the time, I just thought the ending was just random Gmod humor, no idea it was some elaborate ARG horror!

I'm a guy who tried making a gmod arg three times, and I can say they are easy to make, but it's hard to make creative and quality videos. I think I might try again, but I need a really good idea.
My idea is to have only the NPCs be sentient and to have the channel be about NPC battles. I haven’t really brainstormed about this idea much, but it’s innovative enough.

It sorta makes sense how the Pyro gets 'Special Treatment' by being the one to go on the rides. Pyro is often used to counter Spy, the one class Engineer has the most trouble from. So, it makes sense that Gunslinger would 'Like' Pyro more then some of the other classes (Of course, not as much as Engineer, and not enough to spare them.) Of course, I could just be going mad.

29:19 actually the heavy is NOT trying to avoid seeing what is about to happen. that is actually something the heavy does on the original video called Sandvich Is Spy. in the original video, the heavy does that kind of movement because after the sandvich disappeared, the spy would appear behind the heavy to backstab him and that's why the heavy "tries to avoid looking at what is about to happen" on the second video that gunslingerpro2009 published. i hope i helped! :)
i headcanon that the reason badwater didn't use the duplicate gun at first for his ragdolls is because he thought they were unique and wouldn't wanna risk creating useless bodies while the alive ragdolls go hiding, but once he realized that the duplicated scout mantained his sentience, he started creating new scouts to vent by torturing them, or maybe he just wanted to vent after scout escaped, and only find out during it that they keep their memories, which is why he had that villain speech
God I love the deleted video from ClassicGMVideos. Them huddling against the wall out of fear and their fast movements is such a cool visual way of showing the emotions and fear the player is going through and it perfectly culminates in the split second of the burning skeleton we see that causes them to just straight up quit.

I think parody would be the next logical step to take, first there is the really good first instance that kinda blows up (gunslinger pro, badwater videos and the ones that came before that), then alot of other folks try to follow it using largely the same tropes wearing them out (like the ones discoussed at the end of this vid) then once it is so worn out everyone got tired of it they get parodied (havnt seen anything like that yet but this comment would be a great idea for it) and lastly even after that dies down there's eventually a second wave of the medium that changes up enough to be rly good on its own despite its roots (id say interlooper fits really well here), this kinda cycle already kinda happend with petscop and VHS esc ARG's (mendela, local 58, gemini etc) aswell
I'd like to see a Gmod ARG where the obligatory "Mysterious Entity" is actually friendly to the player. Maybe they're haunting the game or computer or something and befriends the player. Like a literal ghost in the machine. The entity would still act fairly creepy, but the player wouldn't be too bothered by it. The player could even be some little kid or something. But, whenever the kid tries to tell people about it, no one believes him. Then maybe the kid invites one of his friends to a server hosted on his computer to see the entity for himself. Maybe the kid's friend makes fun of the kid and it might anger the entity and then who knows what happens. But maybe the ARG could end with the kid finally helping this 'ghost in the machine' escape and be put to rest. It would be creepy, but also kind of heartwarming at the same time. I'm just saying, it'd be a nice twist of formula where the obligatory entity acts out of a desire to protect a user instead of torment them. (Also, feel free to use this idea. I'm not gonna do anything with it... I think.)
if the figure gets angry on the other kids all the creepy shenanigans can be their povs made by the figure to scare de "bullys" and when the entity friend discovers it they can talk about it and maybe move the plot foward by this conversation of them actually meeting each other! or we can just stop writing a full script for something that won't happen idk i feel dumb by trying (no i don't')
That's actually not even a bad idea. Maybe the protagonist kid could end up having a conversation with the 'ghost entity' by talking to it through the developer's console which is, in a way, talking through the game itself.@@mikael-01

If there's one thing I really appreciate about Gunslingerpro, it's how subtle their presentation is with the sentient ragdolls. So many small movements or details that you could easily miss cause it happens so fast or you could pass it off as strangeness in the engine. I didn't even realize the Heavy tried to move away after trying to appease Gunslinger. One detail I remember seeing is how the Spy during the walker tutorial looked up before gunslinger could grab the Spy, as if waking up and trying to see where he is.
Just wanted to say that east europe region (Ukraine, Belarus and Russia) had their own versions of "Mystery entity" : most important are Myasnoy (" A man out of meat") and Nabludatel ("The spectator"). Myasnoy was quite similar to "the usual" mystery entities: he was often hiding in the dark room, or sometimes going out of there to watch the player. Nabludatel on the other hand was usually standing on the buildings or on the balconies, just watching the player enjoying themselvs
Something interesting I noticed that you didn't mention regarding Gunslingerpro is a detail I think is particularly interesting. In the beginning of the Engineer Land video, and the unlisted secret video, the NPCs move *fluidly*. In these two videos, during the only instances of (non-mangled) NPCs moving autonomously out of sight of Gunslinger themselves, they move like living creatures. Not sure how relevant it is, but it sure is interesting to me lol
I think we all need to see a crossover event between these ARGs; would unironically love to watch a supernatural Gmod entity that holds chord over the game as a whole interacting with the mad gods who control those living in it.
Imagine a ARG that instead of taking place in a game like GMOD or SFM, but a game like OVERCOOKED. A modded version of overcooked where as the player starts progressing down the levels the recipes they make become more and more grotesque. From salmon sushi and bacon burgers, slowly to insects and fried roaches… until eventually human flesh and pig intestines, then it turns out the person you have been serving your orders too has been the same person all along not the zombie bread monsters but the KING himself, then as the game ends you realize the king’s dog is no longer next to him. The king insinuates that he is hungry and that his appetite is never satiated and eats the chefs of the game. Then the over arching story is that the king is a god of Gluttony, in his gluttonous search for power (how he became king) his crown cursed him with the very thing he was guilty of a insatiable hunger for power so now he is cursed with an insatiable hunger, and now at the end of the game that there is no more food to cultivate or farm for him to eat. He is left to eat the player and slowly loath his existence as he has eaten everything in the world but is unable to satiate his hunger
To be fair, oversaturation is something that kills many a horror phenomena. General rule of thumb; if something becomes a horror icon, it stops being scary not long after.
One Gmod ARG you missed its called "The survivor of all" and its really unique. Not to mention, its also a reference on itelf to "War on the servers" the old Gmod machinema.
One of the best aspects of gunslingerpro and badwatervideos is how they contrast the shoddy physics based animation of the player, and the smooth organic animation of the ragdolls, you can tell exactly when one takes over from the other, and it takes a bit of skill to be that good at animating, but imitate being bad at animating just as authentically.
New headcanon for Gunslingerpro2009: The ragdolls are so terrified of being deleted, they try to get on his good side, and Gunslingerpro2009's really confused and terrified on why they're sentient, and has no idea how to get them to stop.

You missed something on Gunslinger. The Pyro seems to be able to get away with small movements we see in the fun video Pyro moves twice and gets away with it.
Ya know with the listed ARGs I want to see a web series of an innocent protag discovering their Gmod ragdolls were alive and conducting research before just having them apart of a Save they come back to every now and then as a part of their World now.
someone should make an ARG involving an admin and a regular player/s, the admin would be making machinimas and doing the generic arg thingys, while the player/s would realise whats going on and try to revolt, i think its a good idea but aint nobody seeing this

Personally, a gmod arg that I think is kinda underrated as a concept is plasticapple2009. They have a living rag dolls concept as well, though instead of the player being a villain, it’s one of the ragdolls, Ellis from l4d2. Honestly, give it a watch! I think it does a nice spin on the living ragdolls idea! (And the animations themselves are actually super well made)

I love how in the Gunslingerpro video 'engineer land' the NPCs are very well animated until the engineer shows up. Then the animations become crude as to signify that the engineer (or the player) corrupts everything in his path.
one of the interesting things about tropes is that they aren't bad inherently. whats needed is to use them creatively not just repeat them word for word its why badwater and gunslinger took off as well as they did. you can take the most well trod safest path but if you show care to it and be creative you can have a really well made show.
Honestly, gunslinger and interloper are the only ones I can find interest in anymore. Both are very well done, especially interloper, and both are very original in concept.

The creepy radio playing distorted trumpets and then to numbers, it reminds me of number stations wich were used to give navigation to secret agents mainly in the cold war. Can I just say something? In a community that frequently complains about not being able to do variety content, these G-Mod horror videos, as well as the Interloper series, are probably the biggest boon you could ask for, because now it's opened you up to make any internet horror content you want since these videos are so heavily tied to the analogue horror genre, which has ties to pretty much everything in existence.
These Gmod horror series are always such a thrill to go through, people are honestly really creative to play with the old, nostalgic themes of gmod to make this kind of content. Also, thank you so much for adding the jumpscare warnings, I love watching horror videos but I cannot handle jumpscares very well (partially because of medical conditions) so its really appreciated during these sort of documentary videos :D

Just wanted to say that east europe region (Ukraine, Belarus and Russia) had their own versions of "Mystery entity" : most important are Myasnoy (" A man out of meat") and Nabludatel ("The spectator"). Myasnoy was quite similar to "the usual" mystery entities: he was often hiding in the dark room, or sometimes going out of there to watch the player. Nabludatel on the other hand was usually standing on the buildings or on the balconies, just watching the player enjoying themselvs

Something interesting I noticed that you didn't mention regarding Gunslingerpro is a detail I think is particularly interesting. In the beginning of the Engineer Land video, and the unlisted secret video, the NPCs move *fluidly*. In these two videos, during the only instances of (non-mangled) NPCs moving autonomously out of sight of Gunslinger themselves, they move like living creatures.

Imagine a ARG that instead of taking place in a game like GMOD or SFM, but a game like OVERCOOKED. A modded version of overcooked where as the player starts progressing down the levels the recipes they make become more and more grotesque. From salmon sushi and bacon burgers, slowly to insects and fried roaches… until eventually human flesh and pig intestines, then it turns out the person you have been serving your orders too has been the same person all along not the zombie bread monsters but the KING himself, then as the game ends you realize the king’s dog is no longer next to him. The king insinuates that he is hungry and that his appetite is never satiated and eats the chefs of the game. Then the over arching story is that the king is a god of Gluttony, in his gluttonous search for power (how he became king) his crown cursed him with the very thing he was guilty of a insatiable hunger for power so now he is cursed with an insatiable hunger, and now at the end of the game that there is no more food to cultivate or farm for him to eat. He is left to eat the player and slowly loath his existence as he has eaten everything in the world but is unable to satiate his hunger

To be fair, oversaturation is something that kills many a horror phenomena. General rule of thumb; if something becomes a horror icon, it stops being scary not long after.
One Gmod ARG you missed its called "The survivor of all" and its really unique.
Not to mention, its also a reference on itelf to "War on the servers" the old Gmod machinema.
One of the best aspects of gunslingerpro and badwatervideos is how they contrast the shoddy physics based animation of the player, and the smooth organic animation of the ragdolls, you can tell exactly when one takes over from the other, and it takes a bit of skill to be that good at animating, but imitate being bad at animating just as authentically.
New headcanon for Gunslingerpro2009: The ragdolls are so terrified of being deleted, they try to get on his good side, and Gunslingerpro2009's really confused and terrified on why they're sentient, and has no idea how to get them to stop.

You missed something on Gunslinger. The Pyro seems to be able to get away with small movements we see in the fun video Pyro moves twice and gets away with it.
It would be cool if there was a series where instead of just the ragdolls being alive the props were too

Personally, a gmod arg that I think is kinda underrated as a concept is plasticapple2009. They have a living rag dolls concept as well, though instead of the player being a villain, it’s one of the ragdolls, Ellis from l4d2. Honestly, give it a watch! I think it does a nice spin on the living ragdolls idea! (And the animations themselves are actually super well made)

I love how in the Gunslingerpro video 'engineer land' the NPCs are very well animated until the engineer shows up. Then the animations become crude as to signify that the engineer (or the player) corrupts everything in his path.

one of the interesting things about tropes is that they aren't bad inherently. whats needed is to use them creatively not just repeat them word for word its why badwater and gunslinger took off as well as they did. you can take the most well trod safest path but if you show care to it and be creative you can have a really well made show.

The creepy radio playing distorted trumpets and then to numbers, it reminds me of number stations wich were used to give navigation to secret agents mainly in the cold war. The fact it's related to going somewhere else has a similar purpose to number stations, but that's just a theory. A GAME THEORY

Can I just say something? In a community that frequently complains about not being able to do variety content, these G-Mod horror videos, as well as the Interloper series, are probably the biggest boon you could ask for, because now it's opened you up to make any internet horror content you want since these videos are so heavily tied to the analogue horror genre, which has ties to pretty much everything in existence.
These Gmod horror series are always such a thrill to go through, people are honestly really creative to play with the old, nostalgic themes of gmod to make this kind of content.
Also, thank you so much for adding the jumpscare warnings, I love watching horror videos but I cannot handle jumpscares very well (partially because of medical conditions) so its really appreciated during these sort of documentary videos :D
