I'm actually kind of jealous of the guy who's going to discover all of these videos when the last one is posted and he'll be able to binge all 50 episodes of SNL stories.
Phil Hartman really was the heart and soul of that show. I got a major pang in my heart when you covered his announcement of his little girl being born, the same girl who would turn (along with her older brother) into an orphan six years later. 😢
There's 3 times I cried as an adult when I heard a man had died that wasn't family. Michael Landon in 1991, Steve Irwin in 2006, and Phil Hartman in 1998. I'm still mad about what happened to Phil and still too bitter to really talk about it. My late Mom and I always loved Phil Hartman - in my mind they're friends in Heaven.
Kevin Nealon’s run on Weekend Update is seriously underrated. Lots of weird non sequiturs, callbacks, and probably the highest joke per minute rate in WU history.
"A new study has shown that cellphone use can cause brain tumors. This has not gotten much attention, probably because people who *don't* use cellphones don't care if people who do, die."
They skipped him saying "As GOD AS MY WITNESS...!" That's also on the Farley Best of DVD too. Phil Hartman was the GOAT, but Farley always made us laugh too. I still tear up on their last episode together sitting down on the main stage hugging each other.
The Clarence Thomas confirmation hearing skit was PURE GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has to be one of THE funniest moments ever on SNL!!!!! They REALLY got the impressions of the senators down PERFECTLY!!!!!! Everytime I see it, I laugh. Dana Carvey was hysterical!
I loved that dog in the Massive Head Wound Harry skit. It was obvious that he wasn't supposed to tear the whole thing off, but that made it so much better.
To me, Melanie Hutsell is up there with Mary Gross, Tim Meadows, and Cheri Oteri as cast members who were better than people remember and should have had bigger careers after the show than they had. The Battle of the Bands with Susan Dey was Melanie's sketch and it's one of my favorites of the season
Also Ellen Cleghorn should have gone on to something big. 2 favorite sketches of the 1990s Brady Bunch Vs. Partridge Family AND Cher's Focus on Beauty 2 w/ Christina Applegate.
The other notable thing about Nirvana's SNL performance was how it led to Weird Al's "Smells Like Nirvana" parody. Al, being a friend of Victoria Jackson, took the opportunity to call the show while Nirvana were there in order to get Cobain's blessing to parody his song.
I think one of the best aspects of this series is that it does not waste time. It packs a lot of detail into a half hour and avoids the long, droning podcast format. Love it.
In addition to Wally Feresten, the cue card guy you see at the end of the Steve Martin song (13:59) is Tony Mendez, who would later become a regular presence on David Letterman’s show.
The person who wrote this script clearly does not know any older Jewish women from that period of time. As a lifelong Jew of 53 years of age, I would like to assure you… Linda Richman was *not* in any way “exaggerated”! I knew many Lindas in my life! 🤣
I graduated from HS in 1991, and yeah, it's the best season. But as Lorne says, most people think the best year of SNL is whatever year they graduated HS. :) (This one really is though).

This group was out of control. Mount Comedymore: all-timer club, hall of fame, first ballot, no question, mic drop.
I graduated in 1990. For years I always thought the mid 80s to mid 90s was the best era. Rewatching it on Peacock and putting nostalgia aside I think the Bill Hader, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig years are practically flawless.
Poor Jon Lovitz, he is that kid that was really popular in high school that kept hanging out around his old school when he graduated and realized high school was his peak :(
Love the great musical cold open from Steve Martin and the cast during this season, which is arguably the best cold open in the show's history. I was also a big fan of Toonces The Driving Cat!
Season 17 was the jumping on point for me watching SNL back in the early 90s. My parents thought I wasn't old enough yet but after Macaulay Culkin's episode (he being a year younger than me) my rents had no grounds for argument. If someone younger than me can stay up til 1 A.M. and host a late night network tv show...then I could stay up and watch it. I think my rents were secretly angry that they lost that battle.
This season had two of my all-time favorite sketches: Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer and Mr. Belvedere Fan Club, and it had my favorite line: “Threatening me with eternal damnation won’t get you in any faster.” Thinks for a great recap that brought back pleasant memories.
Sometimes, just on a random whim, I find myself getting into a "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey" rabbit hole. Always brings a smile to my face. Ahhh, Taking my kid to Disney Land.(for example)
This is the season that's probably burned into my memory the most. I was 12 years old and just getting into SNL - I didn't get many of the jokes, but I didn't care. And what a lineup! Possibly the best in the history of the series.
This season, and the next season were helped out ratings-wise by Comedy Central airing reruns every day. In a phenomenon that still continues to this day of shows seeing a ratings boost when viewers have the ability to "binge watch" old episodes. Back then, binge watching was syndication or a cable channel airing 1 (or often more) episode every day rather than having to wait a week between shows, with reruns meaning no new show some times. My girlfriend and I in college used to watch the Comedy Central episode every day before heading to the dining hall for dinner. And after not regularly watching it on Saturdays for a couple years, it got me back into watching
Yeah, 90% of my SNL knowledge is because of Comedy Central reruns. Its the only reason I know the 1991-95 seasons so well since I would've been too young to have seen it live.
5:15 As an SNL fan who’s also a Minnesota Twins fan seeing the audience do the Braves tomahawk chop makes me laugh we know what happened that series in particular that game. “Into deep left center, from Mitchell, and we’ll see you tomorrow night!”
This was the season that got me into the show as a kid. I recorded most of these episodes on VHS when they aired, or when they were rerun the following summer. The Jason Priestley episode had a great Beverly Hills 90210 parody where the 90210 post office is closed due to budget cuts and Beverly Hills has to share a zip code with the Valley. The SNL RUclips channel has yet to upload that sketch and it pains me that I can't watch it.
I know a lot of people say this was a bad era for SNL, but this is my favourite season. I was 13, that might have been a factor, but I still find the sketches hilarious at 45.
@@MariaVosa I've seen a lot of RUclipsrs say the early 90s was the "flop era" of the show. I don't get it either, I love those seasons and they still hold up.

I know I'm late in the game, but PAUSE right at the start at 17:21. You can really see the tears in Phil's eyes. He is just so happy to be a father again to a little baby girl. It just pierces you right into your heart. It's just so heartwarming AND heartbreaking in retrospect. 😢
Funny stuff. I think my favorite bit was Steve Martin doing a Broadway-style musical number, but then needing a cue card to remember the name of the show at the end. It's crazy when I think, I somehow never once saw Phil Hartmen, until he became a cast member on NEWSRADIO. When that show started, I thought his character was like an intelligent version of "Ted Baxter" from MTM... but before long, I slowly realized his character was actually COMPLETELY INSANE.

Season 17 was pretty solid and had two great musical guests in NIRVANA + TEENAGE FANCLUB whom actually beat Nirvana in the respected music magazine Spin Magazine's Album of the Year for 1991.
8:55 Hi. I'm in my 40s. I've been watching this show since before I could talk. In my opinion, this is the best SNL sketch of all time. That's all. Now talk amongst yourselves.
It was obvious from the audience reaction that people who'd grown up watching "The Brady Bunch" really liked Melanie Hutsell's Jan Brady. I think Melanie popularized the "Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!" line even more than the original "Brady Bunch" episode it came from.
If Chris Rock was putting his stamp on this season, you could have fooled me, I don’t remember him being mentioned once. No wonder he quit the next season and left for In Living Color.

@mlj_the_shield it's so easy to forget they're both dead. Such incredible performers during such a strange era of American popular culture
Think SNL repackaged that concept as Terezanos the Pizza restaraunt
My all-time favorite sketch!
It's great to see the Schmidts Gay commercial parody with the actual music intact. Really connects it to the original ad being parodied.
I was wondering if I'd ever see that version again.
Came here to say this.
Yes. Awesome. But the Michael Jordan tampon ad has been the time capsule bit from this episode to never leave the zeitgeist.
