  • Any of these devices that use an encoder switch to adjust volume or input controls will need this service at some point. These controls spin with no end stop. If you have one of these controls and it isn't working properly then you will need to disassemble and clean it.

I remember my old boss doing this to a lot of the older mid to late 90's Aiwa mini and midi systems that had a similar sort of Digital Volume Control.

I'll take the old-time analog electronics.

Have you ever tried to put a little silicone hose on the tip of the soldering pump, works amazing

Getting these RX-V series 1000, 1500 etc. Amplifiers for cheap with this fault is an easy fix. I get them for $20ish and flip them for $100. Overall very reliable units for this time period. I actually prefer the earlier generation. 990 is the best of that gen. Analog tone controls. These units all had phono. Add a Bluetooth receiver into the auxiliary and an hdmi switch and 7.1 fully functional amplifier for less than 10% of the cost of a new unit without the added feature of planned obsolescence - Vintage Yamaha for the win. I bought a hakko pump and will never look back. You can also remove the faceplate and the encoder is right there. I just pop it open in place. Clean and reinstall. 45 min job.

Thanks Dave, this will answer my situation for a radio in my old 97 Dodge van..... no volume control reaction.... just spins. It probably is the same issue for the "joy stick" 4 way fader . The van is prone to Houston heat and humidity. Now I have an idea for pulling the unit out of the dashboard and resolving the controls problem. Keep your cool and weld the stool amigo.

My 1971 RCA CTC39 started to flash blue at about 6 months of age, back then there was only 90 days warranty on a new TV. I pulled the back off hoping it was just a tube but the culprit was a little dust in the blue screen spark gap.
A dollar bill fixed that and that set never had the back off for the rest of it's life. That set used tubes for any circuit handing any power or relative high voltages and transistors for all the signal areas except the tuner, it used Nuvistor tubes. that chassis was near bullet proof.

Ah yes dust on the spark gap. We used to remove every last one of those we saw, failed or not.

    Interesting.
I too prefer the rotary analog controls. The digital ones don't have a stop on them. They'll just keep turning whether the minimum or maximum is reached. But, its still better than up and down buttons. I hate those.

They use materials that break down quicker because of cost cutting? Yes that would explain a lot of how modern gear is all technical and shiny and lasts just a few years. I think the older gear was mostly made better, the margins weren't so close. But capacitors ruin everything. Like the one thing in the Lord of the Rings, but in electronics, we can only wish for a capacitor to rule them all. If only.

I know a person that had a Realistic Pro 4 pocket scanner back in the early 70,s it broke and he took it back to the store who took it and told him they were going to send it back to Tandy to be repaired they didn't do that the scanner was on a shelf in the back room after about two weeks of calling and hounding the store the scanner was in the back room he knew a salesman their at the store and he gave him a new scanner and the old scanner back he took them home and switched the guts out it the new scanner electronics in his old scanner then give both scanners back to the salesmen he knew he then came in and told the store I just want my old scanner back I know you got it in the back instead of sending it back to Tandy so they gave him the scanner back after him and the salesmen switched the guts on the scanner plus he put his receaver crystals on the new scanner guts so he got a brand new scanner in his old case and about six months later some one brought the new scanner back for return crazy but it happened.

It happens all the time. Fraud, you bet but people do it all the time. Then there is the costco free upgrade. I know a guy that did that all the time. Bought a toshiba DVD recorder and a a few months later a new model with a hard drive came out, so he returned the first one, bought the new one, the next year another one came out with a bigger hard drive. He took the second one back got his money back and bought the new one with the bigger hard drive.
Costco had to change their policy due to all the abuse. Lots of returns happen the week following superbowl. Had a friend that worked at a TV retailer that offered returns and every year right after superbowl all these big TVs were returned. Customers saying it was too big for the room. Of course they just bought it for the superbowl party and then returned. So the store made a policy. No returns accepted for any reason for the 14 days that follow superbowl sunday.
They had a 14 day return policy so this ended the people buying a new set in that week leading to super bowl and returning it the next.
Said saled dropped by 60% and returns dropped by 100% LOL

I must admit I do like my Yamaha AV Receivers, Think I own 5… Errr 6 of the damn things now, Latest one I picked up was the RX-A1010, 8 x HDMI inputs, Beefy power output through 9 x Speakers although I only have 5 connected to mine, Bought it off Facebook Marketplace for £140 last year I think & collected it from up near Nottingham aka Robin Hood County! Sounds like that idiot “John” that’s been causing you & other RUclips Channels grief has nothing better to do with his time, Bit like the wind-up Merchants (Wallys) from the CB days back in the 90’s before the Internet became what it is today! Could you tell how that digital encoder work in conjunction with volume control on remote?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Месяц назад +1

Remote sends a coded signal that is sent to the audio processor. The encoder has 2 terminals that are alternately switched to ground as you turn the knob. The order that the pulses run determines what way you are turning. 12 pause 12 pause or 21 pause 21 pause.
