Love this video. I live in rural south western Zimbabwe and the building methods we use here are very similar to yours. Natural cooling structures that blend so well with the landscape. You should look up Eastgate Centre, also here in Zimbabwe, which takes sustainability in city architecture to the next level.

    • @pthomasgarcia
      @pthomasgarcia 2 месяца назад +1

@@naps3386 it depends where you live so far as dampness goes, but with proper drainage and ventilation, it shouldn't be an issue. Also, below the frostline, temperatures unground stabilize to about 50 degrees compared to freezing temperatures above ground

@@naps3386actually the earth holds the temperature at a more temperate level even during the winter. Usually between upper 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit naturally so it is easier to warm an underground space and the walls will hold the thermal mass better.

that's a cool thing for building houses in your area. If you are comfortable with plumbing do it yourself but if you would rather hire an electrician do your electrical, just hire one. Here it takes licensed carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc. to build.

There are more places beside Arizona who have recognized this type of building and put minimal regulations on the build, places meaning states and /or by various countries!! IF the area you live in does not allow for this type of building at this time, then you can submit for it to be accepted, and you can present how other areas have done it, and work closely with whatever agency/committee or whatever to work out the kinks for you and others to build this way where you live.
As far as building and having pros come in for the plumbing, etc., just one or several or for the entire build, it should be up to the owner to decide not rules or regulations dictating you must!!!’

You could have mentioned log cabins or sod houses too. It's funny how the term "traditional house" has changed. "Traditional" now has nothing to do with historical but means "modern".
Having grown up in the muck fields of Indiana and now living in the peet bogs of northern Germany, I cringed when you said "Dirt doesn't burn."
I have a brick house with triple glazed windows. The solar on the roof provides nearly all of the electricity for about half the year, including the electric chain saw and wood splitter for the firewood and charging the electric vehicle in the driveway. Next step is electrically heated hot water in the summer. Unfortunately, in the winter, it just isn't enough... yet. I want to add more panels and would love to find a small wind powered generator that actually works...

Your quotes on the inefficiency of current building useage and wasteage, is staggering. To come to realize that we work our tails off for 40 or more years, most of them paying off debt that was never really needed in the first place, is sobering. I love watching this channel. There are some good reasons for it: You don't pretend to do everything by hand. When tools makes things easier, you use tools. You don't pretend your material is completely free, and you don't mind sharing how much it costs. And I am a firm believer in "grow where you are planted", so building with dirt makes perfect sense for your location. Not everyone has the land or the resources to do this. For those of us who have already invested in a "stick house", mobile home, or other mainstream home choice, I'm also in favor of "recycling" older homes. While sometimes toxicity of materials or decrepitude of the building make this impossible, don't listen to your kids, grandkids or other nay sayers who suggest, "Just strike a match to it and start over." Older homes can be "upcycled" (to use a current catch word). It just takes creativity and putting up with some inconvenience while restructuring. This was/is a fantastic post! Loved every minute of it, and look forward to future posts -- especially about that magnificent house. Just reminder: one great way to make a home sure isn't the only way. History of home building is both varied and amazing.

Here at my place in Cochise County, long before I ever even had an inkling that I would own this place, I actually helped put the stucco on the home that would eventually be my straw bale home several years before I bought it. This is something that I feel deep in my soul and would like everyone contemplating "The Big Move" to watch. Each of you has shown your intention to adapt to a better way of life a life that some would call "alternative" and look down their noses at.
You are the modern pioneers who are leaving the trappings of society behind as you lead future generations into a better life. It may not happen overnight, but believe me, it will happen. People are sick and tired of existing in what "society" calls a normal existence. Many are, like you, looking for an alternative, they are looking for a simpler way of life with a more intimate connection with nature. Somewhere, they can grow their own food and crops knowing they haven't been covered in pesticides and insecticides.
You are the leaders and, I salute each and every one of you...

But it was on the grid and we did have a well and own sewer.
Our daughter moved far away and called us sad. So we sold and moved. I'm not sure we would have been able to stay there in our super old age. So we are still on our own but I feel for the next generation. We have grandkids.

Found the construction statistics very interesting. Here in Indiana I am shocked at how much farm land we are loosing. In the square mile farm area I lived in as a child. There are more than 30 new homes and no one farming. Just outside of the city I currently live in. They took 800 acres out of production for industry expected to bring only 200 jobs. How to balance nature, food production, jobs, and housing is beyond me. Glad you are settling example for some.

I enjoyed today's mix. When I was in middle school we would watch movies that would tell us about the world. manufacturing, farming, people. I very much enjoyed it. I would love to see if this video could be included in middle school curricula.

I want to build an earthen home as much as anything, but unfortunately I have several debilitations that make it impossible (pinched nerves all over my spine, anemia, fibromyalgia, and psoriatic arthritis, oh and ME/CFS, of course...)
I started researching sustainable building and farming practices about 15 years ago and my plan was to build right in your neighborhood! We actually own several parcels just down the road to the south of your homestead! I also researched affordability and great weather, and right where you are is about as good as it gets!
Until then, we are in Ohio and have a little permaculture oasis in our small town lot (under .2 acres)
    Thanks for sharing your journey!

I knew it was important but never realized how important! I will be so Happy when I’m finally able to retire so I can get away from the city and start my own off grid building although I hope to start before I retire by buying land before then but it’s hard taking care of six people with very little help. You are so blessed to have a family that wants to help do it all! Wish I could get more followers it might help and then I could have more to post about❣️🙏 May God continue to bless you🙏!
