  • 1960 educational film on how to apply makeup, aimed at high school girls. Color added and graded with sound restoration.
I’m still on the hunt for a vintage makeup film which is more inclusive to women of color.
Some of the advice here is good. Some of it is hilariously out of date. “Your face is your fortune” being a typical example to cringe to.
The sequence of makeup application for high school girls is as follows:
    00:01 Cleansing
    00:28 Powder makeup
    01:12 Concealing skin blemishes
    01:58 Lip makeup
    03:23 Eyebrow tweezing
    03:42 Eyebrow pencil makeup
    04:45 How to apply Mascara
    05:07 How to curl eyelashes
    05:43 Blotting Lipstick
Original Title: Makeup - Good Grooming for Girls
Made by International Film Bureau Inc
    Source: Personal 16mm collection Glamourdaze.
    AI restoration by Glamourdaze.
In the 1950s and 1960s the International Film Bureau made numerous classroom teaching films in different languages for schools across the USA. This short film on the mysteries of makeup was one of several personal care films.

I cannot imagine how frustrating it was for women back then that struggled with fungal acne, cystic acne, or genetic acne. Considering that washing up and fixing your diet doesn't necessarily fix any of those types.

Ridiculous how many commenters are praising this routine for somehow being more “natural” than today’s standards. They got these girls caked up in powder and thick red lipstick, eyebrows are literally drawn on in an opaque line. There’s nothing wrong with it per say but to assume the average person today is wearing any more makeup on the daily is not true at all. We have more social freedom today to go without the bright matte lipstick or powders that I’m willing to bet did not match their skin tone. Instagram is not real life literally go outside and look at a human being.

Plus, no color range and strict rules on how to literally draw lips and brows, where to place products and the correct amount to use. All I see is a facial corset and young girls looking 20 years older because "This is how it must be done". Not to talk about clonation. They all looked the same already. Not via surgery or filters, of course, but, anyways, such an unbreakable uniformity. At least today I can break any rule with my chin up💁🏻‍♀️✨ 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

As an adult woman well into her twenties with hereditary cystic acne, I'm able to comfort myself knowing that I'm doing all I can to manage and minimize a skin issue that might never 100% go away. I can't imagine, with their more limited knowledge about skincare and why certain skin issues occur, how embarrassed and ashamed a young girl watching these at the time must have felt. The grown-ups in the films and on TV whose whole job it was to know about these things must have made her feel dirty and lazy, no matter how hard she was trying.

as much as these videos are a historical treasure, they are a stark reminder of what a woman's worth was determined by. they are a huge reminder of how narrow the scope of beauty was for women of their time. one summary of a quote from the video was that the girl had acne probably from poor diet or washing, because at this time we had little information about what factors actually influence acne. beauty was looked at through such a narrow scope, and women who did not fall into that category were demonized and blamed and ridiculed.
